No, there really isn't. Not if you want OTA updates. The updates require the proper CID and MID, and you can't change those unless you have s-off.
The alternative (if you really refuse to s-off), is to just unlock the bootloader, flash custom recovery, and flash the GPE stock ROM (no s-off needed). You won't get OTA updates, but you can flash a new stock ROM whenever it gets posted to the Development forum section.

Question about 4.4.4 OTA and root

Gentleman (and why not, ladies):
Installed yesterday a stock GPE 4.4.3 version on my M8. I'm S-ON, stock recovery and rooted.
Just received the info for the 4.4.4 OTA update. My CID is also already set to GOOGL001.
Is it risky to just let it do it's thing? I know that I'll lose root, but is there a problem besides that? Will the process complete sucessfully?
Anyone?
Why don't you just flash the pre-rooted 4.4.4 GPE ruu?

I believe that S-OFF is needed and Firewater didn't worked with my phone.

You think s-off is needed for OTA? Why would you think that?
As long as your are stock ROM and stock recovery, the OTA install will be fine.

You can't change CID without it. Have you tried Sunshine S-Off? Firewater doesn't work anymore.
Tried sunshine but need to go to a more stock rom i guess, on sinless gpe at the moment its 4.4.4 and working fine?
Not as good a battery life as i had before on viper but new viper will install but no wifi
You need the latest firmware with the new 4.4.4 roms. Read the viper site very carefully and it explains why

Outdated Bootloader causing script abort

Hi guys,
I went to update my M8 earlier from Cyanogenmod 11 to 12, but I got this error when updating...
script aborted: This package supports bootloader(s): 3.18.0.0000, 3.19.0.0000; this device has bootloader 3.16.0.0000.
I have an international M8 and I am unsure what steps I have to take to be able to update the bootloader?
I'm guessing I need to flash a stock RUU and then OTA update and then run firewater root all over again?
If anyone could supply me with an RUU for Vodafone UK for the M8, I'd very much appreciate it.
Thanks in advance.

There are no RUU's available for devices outside the US. AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Developer Edition and Verizon(I think) all have RUU's. Then there is a RUU for European International(401) but not really widely available.
Easiest way to update Hboot would be to go with OTA's, else if you're S-OFF(You mentioned firewater so I assume you are) you could just flash the latest 4.x firmware for your device or even convert your device to a more up-to-date version(Developer edition is good).
Going SuperCID and flashing Firmware should be easy as well so... There are guides out there to flash firmware. However if you're S-ON then you might have to go with OTA updates so you'll have to go back to stock(EVERYTHING) for OTA's.
On a side note, firewater wasn'tfor root, it was for S-OFF. Besides, firewater doesn't work anymore.
Thanks for the quick reply pal.
Yes I'm S-OFF.
Where would I find a file to flash the latest firmware? I'm assuming you mean through ClockworkMod?
How do I go back to stock if there aren't any RUU's available?
EDIT: I've got a HTC One M8 GPE (File name: RUU-HTC_One_M8_GPE_5.0.1-3.11.1700.5.zip) can I just flash this through ClockworkMod and then be good to go?

That RUU will convert your device to a Google Play Edition. There is a thread showing how to convert if you want:
[RUU] M8 Google Edition Conversion. 5.0.1
But no, you don't flash it through a custom recovery. The RUU.zip's gets flashed through RUU mode fastboot oem rebootRUU it'll take you to a screen with HTC Logo on background, then you flash it with fastboot flash zip name_of_zip.zip you'll have to flash it twice, first time around it only updates the Hboot but nothing else then you'll have to flash again to update the rest.
For going back to stock(No RUU's): RUUs, OTAs, Stock TWRP Backups, Firmware & More Collection Grab your nandroid backp from that thread, restore it through custom recovery, flash back stock recovery and proceed with OTA updates as normal.
If you just want to stay stock(Sense) for custom ROMs then it might be better to just run the Developer Edition RUU.

As long as my bootloader gets updated so I can flash CM12, I'm happy!
Really struggling with this...
Can anyone link me to a thread that will get me from CM11 (S-OFF 3.16 HBOOT) to CM12 (S-OFF 3.19 HBOOT)?
Can I not just fastboot flash the Google Edition, then redo root and S-OFF and then flash CM12 through ClockworkMod?
And how do you S-OFF these things nowadays? Sunshine?

The only way to S-OFF is to use SunShine @ http://theroot.ninja which will cost $25 respectively.

Its not clear to me why you want s-off.
You only need stock ROM (no system files altered by root) and stock recovery to OTA. Relocking bootloader is not necessary. Its only necessary to relock bootloader to RUU (when s-on).

firewater was an online service. So it no longer works now that the developer stopped supporting it 3 months ago.
But I'm still not convinced you even need s-off. You haven't provided a valid reason that required s-off.
If you do need soff, you need to use sunshine. There is no other option to s-off.

As I already stated above, you do not need to lock the bootloader to OTA update, and you do not need s-off to OTA update. OTA update works fine with bootloader unlocked or otherwise.
You also do not need s-off to go back to stock. Just made a nandroid (or get one from the nandroid collection here) to restore stock ROM, and restore stock recovery (also in the collection).
With s-off you can make the bootloader say LOCKED instead of RELOCKED. But warranty service is typically the only time that is desired.
Yes, s-off will give you more recovery options. Such as being able to run RUU for any CID, or "downgrade" by RUU. And it lets you do things like flash radios or modified hboots. But of the things you mentioned, its not needed.

Hi @redpoint73 can i ask you a question ?
I bought a second hand M8 and it already had S-OFF via sunshine. When i entered bootloader it says : Software status : Modified , (bootloader) UNLOCKED and S-OFF.
I asked the seller for the "unlock_code.bin" and he said that didn't have any.He said he simply ran sunshine to S-OFF.Didn't modified further. No custom recovery no root (although sunshine temp roots) no custom ROM.
So my question is this : performing S-OFF via sunshine will auto unlock your bootloader and say Software status : Modified ?

I actually did s-off back when firewater was still working, before sunshine even existed. So I can't speak from personal experience, just what I've read on these forums. I believe that the sunshine app gives you the options to temp root, s-off, and unlock the bootloader (by means that bypasses HTCDev.com). So that is probably what the previous owner did.
With s-off there isn't ever a need to relock the bootloader, and therefore no need to unlock it again with the bin code. RUUs will run with bootloader unlocked when s-off. And you can change the hboot flag to LOCKED for warranty purposes with s-off.
If for some reason you want to relock and then unlock the bootloader again, you can just go through the HTCDev.com process to get a new bin code. But its not advised. As I don't see why you would ever want to relock (for the reasons just given). And once you go through HTCDev.com, HTC will have a record of you doing so (which they do not at this time).
Thanks you have been more than helpfull!
Another question and last one :
Can i dual boot with multirom a sense 6 rom and the GPe rom?
I have the latest firmware installed so from what i read GPe roms can run without any issues.
Thanks again!

Cannot s-off m8 , want to convert in gpe?

I want to convert my htc m8 to gpe version , i root it and unlock bootloader but cannot s -off, can i do it without s-off or sunshine is only way, thank you.
Sunshine is the way to go
Envoyé de mon HTC One M8
I used sunshine and it worked like a charm several months back. However now I just run a custom rom, GPE version of skydragon. I believe you don't need to be s-off to run it. Basically the same perks of GPE conversion minus stock OTA updates. If you're stuck you just enjoy running that rom isntead

Sunshine is the only way. It works best when on a stock or near stock ROM. I would suggest flashing the MaximusHD ROM (debloated stock), and trying to gain S-Off with that. A lot of users have had success that way.
for example when i download and install this rom from sd card , how is possible to s off device from this rom i dont understand can you explain thank you.
thnx friend i installed skydragon and work very good everythin like org gpe....

To be clear, the "full conversion" to GPE is only needed if you want to get the "official" GPE OTA updates, and/or take advantage of the different GPE partition scheme (smaller system OS partition results in more user accessible internal storage).
As you have found out, you can just flash a GPE custom ROM if you don't need the above features, and don't want s-off. Just make sure your firmware is supported by the custom ROM.

S-off, maximusHD question

Hi guys,
I just got an HTC 10 and i'm coming directly from the 'ol ONE S.
Questions are: I just want to install the latest MaximusHD rom on my device (I already unlocked it and installed TWRP). What can happen if i don't do the S-off with sunshine? Will I miss the opportunity to get OTA? What will happen when Nougat OTA is out? Without s-off can I still update the phone with the RUU and then install the latest nougat maximus?
Thanks in advance!!!
Nicola
You don't need S-off for any of that stuff.
Install Maximus, and when that gets updated to Nougat just flash the latest version. You won't get OTAs from htc anyway when on a custom Rom.
S-off is only needed for you if you want to downgrade your software to an older version through an ruu, or if you want to flash an ruu that wasn't made for your phone. You can still flash an ruu while s-on as long as it's made for your phone (mid) version and is at least at the same firmware version you are already at.
