Question about 4.4.4 OTA and root - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Gentleman (and why not, ladies):
Installed yesterday a stock GPE 4.4.3 version on my M8. I'm S-ON, stock recovery and rooted.
Just received the info for the 4.4.4 OTA update. My CID is also already set to GOOGL001.
Is it risky to just let it do it's thing? I know that I'll lose root, but is there a problem besides that? Will the process complete sucessfully?

Anyone?

Why don't you just flash the pre-rooted 4.4.4 GPE ruu?

I believe that S-OFF is needed and Firewater didn't worked with my phone.

You think s-off is needed for OTA? Why would you think that?
As long as your are stock ROM and stock recovery, the OTA install will be fine.

You can't change CID without it. Have you tried Sunshine S-Off? Firewater doesn't work anymore.

Tried sunshine but need to go to a more stock rom i guess, on sinless gpe at the moment its 4.4.4 and working fine?
Not as good a battery life as i had before on viper but new viper will install but no wifi

You need the latest firmware with the new 4.4.4 roms. Read the viper site very carefully and it explains why

Quite sure you can, just find the VZW 4.4.3 firmware and flash it then flash a 4.4.3 ROM. Or if there is a 4.4.3 RUU you could do that as it'll flash everything including firmware, ROM, etc.
You need to be S-OFF to flash firmware or do an RUU though.

I'm not S-OFF, is there any way to do it, or do I just have to wait until I can get S-OFF on 4.4.4?

If you took the official 4.4.4 update you will have to wait for S-off , m sure Sunshine devs will create an exploit

I'd like to know this as well, but for a Rogers Canada HTC One M8. I can't find a clear answer with step by steps on how to do this.

Its not clear what you or the OP are asking exactly. If the intent is to "downgrade" to run firewater, then NO you can't do it.
If already s-off, just flash the desired firmware by fastboot and restore a stock nandroid.

Not looking to run firewater. Just want to go back to 4.4.3. Running the stock rom, got the OTA 4.4.4 last week and don't like it.

This kinda sucks. Broke my original M8 and the replacement came with 4.4.4 on it so I'm stuck with a stock HTC phone. I want my GPE 5.0 ROM back! Stupid Verizon.

The only way to S-OFF is to use SunShine @ http://theroot.ninja which will cost $25 respectively.

Its not clear to me why you want s-off.
You only need stock ROM (no system files altered by root) and stock recovery to OTA. Relocking bootloader is not necessary. Its only necessary to relock bootloader to RUU (when s-on).

Firewater doesn't work AT ALL, Sunshine is the ONLY way to S-OFF a phone but it's not compatible with Lollipop

firewater was an online service. So it no longer works now that the developer stopped supporting it 3 months ago.
But I'm still not convinced you even need s-off. You haven't provided a valid reason that required s-off.
If you do need soff, you need to use sunshine. There is no other option to s-off.

As I already stated above, you do not need to lock the bootloader to OTA update, and you do not need s-off to OTA update. OTA update works fine with bootloader unlocked or otherwise.
You also do not need s-off to go back to stock. Just made a nandroid (or get one from the nandroid collection here) to restore stock ROM, and restore stock recovery (also in the collection).
With s-off you can make the bootloader say LOCKED instead of RELOCKED. But warranty service is typically the only time that is desired.
Yes, s-off will give you more recovery options. Such as being able to run RUU for any CID, or "downgrade" by RUU. And it lets you do things like flash radios or modified hboots. But of the things you mentioned, its not needed.

Hi @redpoint73 can i ask you a question ?
I bought a second hand M8 and it already had S-OFF via sunshine. When i entered bootloader it says : Software status : Modified , (bootloader) UNLOCKED and S-OFF.
I asked the seller for the "unlock_code.bin" and he said that didn't have any.He said he simply ran sunshine to S-OFF.Didn't modified further. No custom recovery no root (although sunshine temp roots) no custom ROM.
So my question is this : performing S-OFF via sunshine will auto unlock your bootloader and say Software status : Modified ?

I actually did s-off back when firewater was still working, before sunshine even existed. So I can't speak from personal experience, just what I've read on these forums. I believe that the sunshine app gives you the options to temp root, s-off, and unlock the bootloader (by means that bypasses HTCDev.com). So that is probably what the previous owner did.
With s-off there isn't ever a need to relock the bootloader, and therefore no need to unlock it again with the bin code. RUUs will run with bootloader unlocked when s-off. And you can change the hboot flag to LOCKED for warranty purposes with s-off.
If for some reason you want to relock and then unlock the bootloader again, you can just go through the HTCDev.com process to get a new bin code. But its not advised. As I don't see why you would ever want to relock (for the reasons just given). And once you go through HTCDev.com, HTC will have a record of you doing so (which they do not at this time).
Thanks you have been more than helpfull!
Another question and last one :
Can i dual boot with multirom a sense 6 rom and the GPe rom?
I have the latest firmware installed so from what i read GPe roms can run without any issues.
Thanks again!

No idea, I've never used MultiROM, and not that familiar with it. Hopefully, someone who knows will chime in. Or you can post to the MultiROM thread to possibly get a quicker answer.

Yes.
Note that you need to run the RUU that matches your CID and MID.

You mean the phone gets stuck when trying to OTA?
S-off doesn't affect OTA. But if you have modified ROM (custom ROM, root - even if unrooted, etc.) or custom recovery, that will get the phone stuck while trying to OTA.

This can just happen for no reason. You will see on this forum, there are a number of folks that are fully stock, never modded (never unlocked bootloader, root, etc.) that got stuck trying to OTA to MM.

No, there really isn't. Not if you want OTA updates. The updates require the proper CID and MID, and you can't change those unless you have s-off.
The alternative (if you really refuse to s-off), is to just unlock the bootloader, flash custom recovery, and flash the GPE stock ROM (no s-off needed). You won't get OTA updates, but you can flash a new stock ROM whenever it gets posted to the Development forum section.

S-off, maximusHD question

Hi guys,
I just got an HTC 10 and i'm coming directly from the 'ol ONE S.
Questions are: I just want to install the latest MaximusHD rom on my device (I already unlocked it and installed TWRP). What can happen if i don't do the S-off with sunshine? Will I miss the opportunity to get OTA? What will happen when Nougat OTA is out? Without s-off can I still update the phone with the RUU and then install the latest nougat maximus?
Thanks in advance!!!
Nicola
You don't need S-off for any of that stuff.
Install Maximus, and when that gets updated to Nougat just flash the latest version. You won't get OTAs from htc anyway when on a custom Rom.
S-off is only needed for you if you want to downgrade your software to an older version through an ruu, or if you want to flash an ruu that wasn't made for your phone. You can still flash an ruu while s-on as long as it's made for your phone (mid) version and is at least at the same firmware version you are already at.
