I added two lines to my parents' T-Mobile family plan through telephone sales and chose the slowest shipping method, so it won't get here until Monday evening, but I'm going to fly out of state on Monday morning. Will I be able to go to Walmart, and buy a pre-paid T-Mobile burner, use the SIM card, and activate my Galaxy Nexus so i'll have the phone up and running tomorrow? If so, will it deactivate the SIM that they're shipping me?
There really isn't any activation involved with GSM phones. Just pop in whichever sim card you want and go.

How will it know which T-Mobile account my phone is on?
The account and number are tied to the sim card. I was under the assumption you were going to buy a prepaid sim for the short term and that would be fine. However, would not be tied to your account and would have a different number.

would I be able to buy the burner prepaid SIM, call T-Mobile and say I want to use that SIM card and assign it my account instead of the SIM card that they're sending me?
Don't know how t-mob works but I can change my sim anytime and my carrier will put my number there no problem

Not if you want to pick your phone number. The prepaid sim already has its own phone number and you can't change it.

The only thing that is activated on T-Mobile (and most GSM-based carriers) is the SIM card. The phone is not "activated." That is just how GSM works.
Unless I am misunderstanding, you just want an active SIM to use with your new line right? If you have one available you can just walk into a local T-Mobile store and tell them to give you a new SIM for the account/line that you just opened. Afterwards, any other SIM, including one they may mail to you, will not be associated to that line. They do not allow multiple SIMs to be assigned to a line. Activate one, deactivate any other. That's the way it works.

No that wouldn't work cause the prepaid sim would already be active you'll either have to use the non active sim that comes shipped or get to a corpo store and pick up a free one. Imma sales rep for tmob

i guess this is a non issue now. i called T-Mobile to inquire about this but wanted to check my plan first and it turns out the telephone sales lady while telling me my 3rd line would be free due to an account offer, i now actually have to pay for it. i thought the offer was too good, but she confirmed it and i actually have a CallRecorder recording of the conversation. Most likely going to cancel the changes, revert to the previous account and return the phones when they're delivered tomorrow. What a **** feeling, i was really looking forward to activating and using my Nexus too.

That's way more trouble than its worth to try and get working. Why exactly do you want to do this? T-Mobile gives you a SIM already... and if you need another, they'll give you another lol.
Prepaid SIMs are different plans and services and are not transferrable between T-Mobile postpaid and prepaid, generally.

They do give a SIM however it's being mailed and delivered tomorrow but i found out yesterday i have to head out of state tomorrow morning. I called a few TMo stores and they all want to sell me a SIM for $20.
As for the prepaid plans, i just want the SIM from the prepaid phone. From what I've read, the prepaid phone doesn't include any type of plan, it's $20 for the phone and SIM card and a few starter minutes?
Hopefully I won't have to fight T-Mobile too hard to cancel the add a line changes I made last week, I"ll just return their phones or reject delivery and go with Straight Talk for a few months until my parents' T-Mo plan expires in August and add myself then. Such a hassle haha.

But those SIMs are for prepaid only. They can't be used with postpaid plans.
Think of a SIM Card like a Key to your Number on T-Mobile and it's affiliated plan.
That's it. SIM Card in, enter PIN to unlock the Card on the current device, and off you go.
Call, text, whatever.
Internet settings should be updated automatically.
Right now I'm on Straight Talk, but want to switch to T-Mobiles' 4g Monthly plan. Where did you guys get the non-gba 50.01 micro sim card? I'm having no luck searching on Google. Called T-Mobile and had a dumb representative on the phone that kept insisting that I get a sim card and cut it ignoring what I actually needed. Called a lot of stores around me and they said they didn't carry it. Only found one guy on ebay selling them for $30 a piece, I'm not paying that. I would rather buy it officially from T-Mobile.
Bump.

There are other threads also discussing this.
I have a European One X, took me 30 mins of calling to find the right micro SIM. I contacted all of my local (within 5 miles of my house and office) T Mobile stores and struck out. I ended up calling a T Mobile store a few miles out and the store manager was kind enough to email his peers and called me back within 20 mins to tell me which store had it, that the store had it on hold for me and even gave me the name of the manager I should ask for.
T Mo USA customer service is no help as they cannot specify that you are in need of a non GBA micro SIM and so they will simply send you what they have (more than likely a newer micro SIM such as what is being shipped out with the One S).
You have to call around stores and ask yourself. Perhaps you will get lucky as I did and a manager will offer to check other stores and call you back. I simply told the manager I was speaking with that I just purchased an unlocked device from Europe and how excited I was to have it. The manager asked me what device and through "small talk" and a love for gadgets, he took the extra step and sent an email out and called me back (nice).
If you strike out, you will have no other choice but to purchase the SIM from Amazon or eBay.
Good luck!
Yeah that was who I called was the USA customer service. I wish it wasn't so hard to acquire this sim card, but I guess I'll try. Thanks .

Hope it works out, buddy. I too wasn't happy considering I may have to pay for SIM, let alone such a ridiculous price.
I have three regular size T-Mobile SIM cards version 50.01 if anyone needs one.

Now, 2 left.

I'm on the verge of buying an S3 but off a friend. I talked to a T-mo rep and she was telling me about buying a Micro-SIM because cutting down the old ones won't work with WiFi calling and I would get signal issues. I'm pretty sure the signal issues don't have anything to do with the SIM card and WiFi calling doesn't appeal to me since I always have full signal in my house. I just want to know if I need to buy a new SIM card or not. Thanks everyone!

Good question if you ask me, does anyone know if it can be done?
Just got to a Tmobile store and ask for a micro sim. THey have them for free, or pm me and I'll send you one.
Then once you have the phone you can either call or go to the store and have them switch your line over to the new sim. If you call, just don't use the phone you are switching the sim from as it will drop the call once they enter the new sim card for your line.
Sim cards are usually free at T-Mobile I heard cutting down old sim cards will give you problems but not exactly sure what.
Just go to the store and ask for a new sim card and they can transfer everything over for you.

When you go to the tmo store, make sure the card they give you is one that is capable of wifi calling. None of them in my area have the ones that are, you might have to get it from customer service.
I ran into this issue as well. I just figured the SIM from my Galaxy nexus would work with the S3 I purchased through Wirefly.com but it was too big (obviously). As others mentioned, I just went up to the local T-Mobile store and asked for a micro sim card to use with my new phone. They activated one and gave it to me all within 2 minutes of entering the store, free of charge.
I would laugh if T-Mobile tried to charge me for a new SIM card to use with their service. They should provide SIM cards for free, much the same as your bank giving you a replacement debit card at no extra charge since you are using their services.
There lying they just want u to get the "new" Sims that have throttling and tethering detection ... have my sim card from 2005 cut and using it on tmobile. 4g hspa+ no issues wifi calls work..

Before I got my s3, i went to my local t mobile store and told them i need a micro sim card for my new s3. They gave me one without a problem for free. I think in order to get one for free, you must be on a two year contract with t mobile and your account has to be in good standing.
if not try this http://www.t-mobile.com/shop/Phones/cell-phone-detail.aspx?cell-phone=T-Mobile-Micro-SIM-Card it should work.
if that does not work, try ebay. if that does not work then just pay your t mobile store.
So I will be getting the HTC One. I'm currently using an iPhone 5, and I want to be able to switch between the 2.
I know the iPhone 5 uses nano sim, and the HTC One uses micro sim, so I will have to buy an adapter.
However, will it even be possible to just switch sims, seeing as Verizon is CDMA?
Thanks!
I'm doing this same thing with my S4. You will have a SIM in the iPhone and a SIM in the HTC One.
You'll need to go onto the website and swap the active device on the line (takes like 5 mins, super easy).
Even if you could just drop the iPhone SIM into the HTC One (you can not), you'd still have to set the IMEI for the device to be the active device.
This is how they track data usage etc. Activation takes up to 15 minutes, but I noticed in my area in socal it took only 2 minutes.
There is no additional cost to swap or use a different device. Did this myself this morning, rep assured there is no charge but they do present a summary of what the line (your phone number) costs monthly. Not to be confused with the IMEI and SIM numbers (for which there is NO cost to swap, add, etc).

I've swapped my sim between at least 20 devices without ever needing to change anything on the verizon web page. The only time I have ever had to have any interaction with Verizon is when going from a nano to micro sim. However I've cut three micro sims to fit into iPhones without issue.

That's way too complicated. Just buy a $5 sim adapter off Amazon and voila. I switch between my s4 and iPhone on a weekly basis and have never had to call verizon or use the website.
With sim adapter I've been using the Same sim and switching between my galaxy s4, iPhone 5, bb Z10, and lumia 928.
Ok, so it looks like there are a couple different options, and now at least I know it's definitely possible to do easily.
Thanks for the replies everyone, you're awesome!

**EDIT** Ha! Snap, 600th post. Sorry, had to, I got excited for a second.
I went by a Verizon store today to purchase an HTC One. At the store, there was a sticker on the HTC One that said "NFC SIM required to activate". The sales person didn't know if my nano sim / adapter would work at all in the HTC One. We couldn't even test it, because he said I'd be charged a $35 restocking fee if it didn't work, and if I decided not to purchase... I decided not to take the risk.
Has anyone actually tried moving an iPhone 5 nano sim to an HTC One (using an adapter)?
Can an active nano sim (non-NFC sim) be used / moved a new HTC One, or is a NFC sim really required to activate??

I have not and I don't know the answer to your last question, however I've decided I'm just going to keep the nano sim in the iPhone and keep a sim in the htc one and when I want to switch I'll just go to VZW website and switch phones, like the first answer said. This will not work. As soon as you activate the One VZ will "burn" your i5 sim. Same thing going the other direction. VZ will not allow you to have two (2) working sim cards.

Verizon used to disable a SIM after its been used... i.e. SIM A in phone, switch to SIM B, SIM A is no longer usable. So your plan might now work.
Instead, you'll likely have to activate the Nano SIM for the iPhone 5, then use an adapter when moving your iPhone 5 SIM to another phone...
Two SIM adapter options are -> http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009B9YWB4/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 or -> http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009ABEA7E/ref=oh_details_o04_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (i've ordered each of those, so I know they work ).
i literally just reactivated my nano sim, stuck it in my iPhone to make sure it worked, and then put it into my One using an adapter. works fine
I guess you can call Verizon and have them send you a sim card.
.. but only one lol
got one coming. just in case ever need one
they send for free and doen't charge for the SIM if anyone every wants to save themselves a trip to the VZW store
I had them send NFC SIM, didn't realize i dont need it but oh well.
she actually sent me two because their systems were slow and she never asked my address and I said ur sending it to my appt right, and shes like.. no.
she was very nice, apologized for not asking, and instead said f it and said ill just send one to you and one to the original order cos their computers weer sucking lol
I'm currently on a Verizon HTC One M7 and due for am upgrade. Rather than doing the two year subsidized contract, however, I am considering buying an unlocked version of the phone on Swappa for $400 or so and then just bringing that phone to Verizon.
Is this possible? Back in the day I recall that wouldn't work because Sprint and Verizon used CDMA bands while the rest used GSM with Sim cards and the like, but I thought I remember reading that it's no longer a problem on Verizon.
So can I buy an unlocked M9 and bring it over or does it have to be a Verizon specific model to work?
Thanks in advance.

Both the M8 and M9 will work well in the Verizon network. Honestly, the M8 is every bit as good
as the M9. Both will be updated to next Android operating system - Marshmallow. I personally like the M8
power switch placed on top right for useability, but that's personal to each user. Both have great screens and custom
roms built for them. Swappa is a great place to start your hunt after you decide which one you want.
p.s. Only get a Verizon CDMA phone, don't mess with AT&T GSM. - it IS specific due to which bands are active in the phone. It can be unlocked after S-0ff with card or clip.
So then you still need a Verizon specific phone to use their network. Gotcha.

Not necessarily, but it's a massive headache to get it to work in most cases. I haven't personally done it with the m8 or m9 but I have with other phones. It's not like the nexus or motto x where you can just pop the card in and go (now that Verizon finally whitelisted the non Verizon sold versions of both). If it isn't whitelisted and you get it to work they tend to complain that you're using an unauthorized device and won't help you with network issues, etc. So TLDR get a Verizon version or a phone meant to be truly compatible with all carriers like the motto x, nexus 6, or the two new nexi released today.

Funny, I didn't read this reply but ended up having to do that anyway because I had forgotten my billing PIN and the retailer said I'd need to go to a corporate store to reset it. Glad I did, the retailer store wanted $25 for a new SIM card.
So in case anyone else tries this, the answer is : no. The M7 card doesn't fit in the M9. But the corporate store gave me a new one and activated it for free.
That's odd...I bought an unlocked HTC One M9 and it wouldn't work on Verizon I ended up having to buy the Verizon version.
I just call the vzw 1-800 number and ask for them to send me a SIM card, they will send 1 free one without issue.
I've had 3-4 sent over the past years since nano and never been turned down. I like to have a backup laying around.
Not Odd

No, that's not odd. He got a Verizon phone. Unlocked does not mean it works on Verizon. Unlocked only means that a phone is not locked into a specific carrier. It does NOT mean that the phone is compatible with every carrier's network. Verizon uses a CDMA network for its phones. Other than Sprint, everybody else uses a GSM network.
I'm certainly not an expert or even a techie, but I read somewhere that all 4GLTE phones operate on the same radio, which sounds like you should be able to use a 4G phone on any network, but that apparently is not the case ... maybe because 4G isn't available everywhere and phones have to be able to fall back on their 3G network? ... I'm not sure.
Bottom line, if you have Verizon, get a Verizon phone.
One final note ... that doesn't mean you have to buy your phone from Verizon. Swappa and eBay both have Verizon phones available. You just have to watch the fine print and don't trust text that says "works with any carrier." Make sure it says it works with Verizon.
