Maybe if you temp unroot, you'll be able to ota, but there's been at least 4 updates since .242, so best thing would be Flashtool, which would require re-rooting, or flash a prf in recovery. For Flashtool:
1 - download Flashtool (http://www.flashtool.net/index.php)
2 - install drivers for your phone, including fastboot and flashmode drivers, from driver exe program in Flashtool folder, (if you don't have them already)
3 - open Flashtool, and click on Xperifirm logo at top, (XF), and find the latest fw for your region, (check the white tag inside sim slot if not sure), and download.
4 - after downloaded, go back to Flashtool main screen, click lightning bolt, select 'flashmode', and navigate to downloaded fw file, then follow instructions.
For prf:
Download and flash in recovery, for example - http://forum.xda-developers.com/son...503-14-6-1-236customizedinpre-rooted-t3265543 - or, just make your own - http://forum.xda-developers.com/crossdevice-dev/sony/tool-prfcreator-easily-create-pre-t2859904

Yes, I was thinking about flashing pre-rooted 14.5.A.0.270 and restore apps from backup. Thanks

Flash .270 if you want, but since then there's been 0.283, 0.368, 1.216, and the latest, 1.236. The link I posted is for 1.236, IN customization.

Hmm, I think I should go with the latest one. Is there any known serious bug or battery issue in 1.236?

[Q] Rooting z1 compact stock lollipop

We all have gotten a sneak peek of Sony's lollipop update onto our beloved z1 compact. Through the many ways available I for instance used an ftf file. But they do not come pre-rooted like the zip file alternatives.
The only way to root ftf I am told is to flash a kernel pre-installed with a recovery then flash SuperSU zip. I have flashed like 3 different boot.imgs only to find no TWRP/Philz/cmw recovery.
Can anyone give me a WORKING kernel that will boot into a recovery? Would really appreciate this.
Found my solution
Edit: I just found a cm11 snapshot boot.img kernel, flashed it. Booted to recovery and flashed a pre-rooted rom zip. Easy as pie.
Thanks all.
Just flash KK firmware 108, root it, install recovery latest version, and afterwards flash any customised prerooted ROM of your choice.

This is too much work. Work that I have to do. It's the only way to root this ftf. damn it
It's up to you.
I've done it.
I made a pre-rooted ftf using PRF creator and compiling the SUPERSU v2.37 and Z1C locked dual recovery 2.8.12 from Nuts site.
You can use Xperifirm to download the the firmware, then use Flashtool to decrypt the fileset and create the FTF, then you're good to go.
Hello guys.Does this method works??Without unlocking the bootloader? http://techchomps.com/root-14-5-a-0-242-android-5-0-lollipop-on-sony-xperia-z1-compact/

I'm from the UK but I used the "Customized US" version. It works all the same, I've put together a UK one now but I'll need to wipe data before I can use it.
I'd share if I didn't have awful internet. The file is massive, unfortunately.
You'll find multiple threads on how to do different parts.
You need to create your pre-rooted firmware, then you'll need to download KK with Xperifirm (probably .108) and flash it with Flashtool.
Root KK using Easy Root Tool and install XZDualRecovery using the desktop client.
Once you're rooted with SuperSU/SuperUser and Recovery you can install the pre-rooted firmware (PRF) as a flashable zip within Recovery itself.
There's also work arounds for Xposed which you can find too, I've used them and it's all working as it should for now.
I also have a locked bootloader, so don't worry about unlocking it. I'll have a look around for the threads I used and post any I find.

What I did is that I downgraded with Flashtool, rooted KK, and then flashed a prerooted rom through the recovery. No need to unlock the bootloader.

OK, there seems to be some loss in translation somewhere. Hope this will clear up some stuff:
1. Flash KitKat (kernel, system, everything).
2. Root it.
3. Install recovery (here)
4. Since you don't want to make your own pre-rooted firmware, here. Click on 'Google Drive' for the zip, and FTF. You need both.
5. Put the zip in your SD card/internal.
6. Boot into recovery and clear all data (dalvik, system, data, everything).
7. Flash the zip. DO NOT REBOOT.
8. Shutdown and use Flashtool to flash the .ftf you downloaded. Check System and Baseband on the 'exclude' column.
9. Have fun!
@dazzerfong OK,first of all thanks for your answer. What I'm asking is how did you do the first step with locked bootloader.
Flashtool->Flashmode->KitKat 157 FTF->Then root it blah blah?
Are these steps correct or not? Im about to try today cos I really miss root on my phone.
If you are already on Lollipop and your bootloader is locked you can get root this way.
1.Download the correct KitKat (.157) ROM for your country/operator using Xperifim.
Convert it to FTF using Flashtool. (there are tutorials, search)
2.Flash the FTF you created using Flashtool's Flashmode. Include everything.
3.Root your KitKat (.157) using the forum's tutorials and also install [NUT]'s recovery.
4.Boot into recovery and flash your pre rooted ROM in flashable zip format.
(There are also tutorials on how to create this with Xperifim and PRF programs).
5.Enjoy rooted Lollipop with locked bootloader.

Yep! All done with locked bootloader (or, if you want, unlocked, but you're wasting your time if you're unlocked). So, first you flash the FTF of a KitKat ROM.
Rooting, use Towelroot or something. No idea why, but Towelroot refuses to play with my TWRP (recovery), so I used the old method.
@dazzerfong
One last question cos I just did all the steps but I couldnt reboot into Lollipop after flashing my pre rooted rom zip file.
6. Boot into recovery and clear all data (dalvik, system, data, everything).
7. Flash the zip. DO NOT REBOOT.
8. Shutdown and use Flashtool to flash the .ftf you downloaded.
Check System and Baseband on the 'exclude' column.

On step 8 which FTF you mean exactly? I assume you mean the FTF from which you created
your pre rooted zip initially? In my case the Customized GR version?

You should have downloaded 2 things so far: the zip, and the FTF. That FTF is Lollipop stock: doesn't matter where it's from. Flash that in Flashtool, but remember to check 'System' and 'Baseband' in the 'Exclude' column.

Downgrade to .108 (with flashtool) in order to directly root the phone, whereas with .157, you'll have to flash an older kernel with flashtool in order to get root.
Once rooted, just get yourself a flashable prerooted firmware (zip file) and flash it from the recovery (after a wipe factory reset; wipe data; wipe cache; wipe Davilk Cache and Wipe System).

[Q] How to Root Sony Xperia Z1 compat for Android lollipop

i have sony z1 compact
now i update lollipop 5.0.2
plzzz help me how to root
Go back to Kitkat, get root and wait for a rooted Kernel or usable Backdoor in Lollipop.
Or open Bootloader, but also go back to KK, and wait for a custom Kernel or a Backdoor.
Gesendet von meinem D5503 mit Tapatalk
Step-by-step to get Z1c with rooted Lolipop (for booth Locked BootLoader and Unlocked BootLoader). You can skip step 1 and 2 if already have custom recovery installed:
1. Go back to KitKat (108 is recommended because it can be rooted directly)
2. Root and install custom recovery (Philz Touch is recommended because I have boot loop with TWRP)
3. Download flashable zip Pre-Rooted Lolipop firmware (or create one yourself) and copy it to SD card
4. Go to recovery and wipe your device (wipe for clean installation is recommended). Do not restart your device
5. Install flashable zip PRF from SD card
5. Using FlashTool and TFT rom file (same version with flashable zip) to flash your device again EXCLUDE SYSTEM
Enjoy rooted Lolipop

Hello again
Latest firmware with Lollipop 5.1.1. is here and i make also a flashable zip for Xperia Z1 (C6903), and so far is been released in just few countries. I make it pre rooted as by my side once you have a pre rooted firmware you can be able to manage and delete apps what you don`t need to free space in your mobile.
What do you need:
- Flashable zip
- Mobile phone Xperia Z1 (C6903) - with CWM/TWRP to can flash the zip
- USB Cable (make sure your battery is over 75%)
- Attention and patience
The procedure to flash the zip is the same like in other threads (copy the zip to your external SD Card and from there reboot your phone to CWM/TWRP and select - install zip)
STEPS TO UPDATE FROM ORIGINAL 5.0.2 Lollipop
1 - Download the .zip from the link bellow in Download section
2 - Copy the .zip to your External Memory (SD Card)
3 - Reboot the phone in Dualrecovery (CWM/TWRP/Philz)
4 - Select INSTALL, then
4 - Navigate to SD Card (external memory/sdcard1) and select the .zip you copied on step 2
5 - Confirm to flash the .zip
6 - When it says FINISHED and if all goes without errors select BACK then Reboot System
7 - Wait patiently for Android to Update and to boot up, the first reboot is longer than a normal one (around 5 minutes)
If you have no root access and not dual recovery and you are running Android 5.0.2 you must follow this steps:
1 - Downgrate to original firmare .108 (see below the Downgrate section)
2 - ROOT and INSTALL DUALRECOVERY
3 - Then follow the same steps as i wrote above to Update
The content of zip is
- firmware C6903_14.6.A.1.216_Customized CE [Central Europe] (i found with XperiFirm on thread wrote by @IaguCool so of course credits go to him)
- UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.46 credits go to @Chainfire
- LATEST Z1-lockeddualrecovery2.8.22-RELEASE.flashable credits to @[NUT]
I used PRF Creator to make this zip flashable, credits go to @zxz0O0

If you have done before flash with dual recovery you may skip the last link, but if it is your first time when you try to do this i highly recommend you to read before each thread including the one on last link.

No fear to flash as it is, just boot to dual recovery , select the zip where you copy it and flash it, then reboot the phone, just be patient the first boot time will be longer than normal. Yesterday before i upload the link i try the zip on my phone and i did not wipe anything, i was on 14.5 A.0.283 (lollipop 5.0.2). Once the reboot was done i have all the settings, messages, contacts was untouched .
Good luck!

You only need the latest version of flashtool if you have a 2015 or newer Xperia device 9.18.6 or earlier are the better versions and wipe clean the device ticking userdata and cache this will prevent any problems you can also use flashtool to download the firmware instead of xperifirm.

help with stock firmware

Sooo, my backup is gone :crying:
I've tried restoring the stock firmware with flashtool, but i just cant seem to get it working :/
I go into the flashtool and select the firmware but nothing happends (i am in fastboot)
- Is there a stock firmware that is flashable in TWRP?
1. you need to see proper flashing tutorial,
2. once you download stockrom via XPERIFIRM (last button (right) on FLASHTOOL )
3. create ftf file (automatically)
4. now select firmware and when flashtool prompt, connect device in FLASHMODE (not fastboot mode)
it will flash
make sure you have the LATEST version of flashtool and all the drivers are installed

1. usually autodownloads via Xperifirm goes at C:\Users\<user>\.flashTool\firmwares, however if this is not the problem and you have
2. two firmware (android 6 & 7) both are at C:\Users\<user>\.flashTool\firmwares and you are able to see only 6 this could mean
(a) the firmware of 7 is not complied properly
(b) downloading firmware again from zero, may help
3. reinstalling flashtool also helps
4. make sure you are on latest flashtool and xjar files are replaced

I have done all of the above. I can see all the firmwares in the older versions of flashtool but none in the new version (the firmwares are located in the correct folder)
- the only thing i can see when i point the flashtool at the firmwares folder is "Sony Xperia z5 premium" and none of the firmwares it's supposed to show me
i cant seem to be able to attach an image so i hope this dropbox link to the image will do
- this is the only thing i see with the new version
