[Q] Rooting z1 compact stock lollipop - Xperia Z1 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

We all have gotten a sneak peek of Sony's lollipop update onto our beloved z1 compact. Through the many ways available I for instance used an ftf file. But they do not come pre-rooted like the zip file alternatives.
The only way to root ftf I am told is to flash a kernel pre-installed with a recovery then flash SuperSU zip. I have flashed like 3 different boot.imgs only to find no TWRP/Philz/cmw recovery.
Can anyone give me a WORKING kernel that will boot into a recovery? Would really appreciate this.
Found my solution
Edit: I just found a cm11 snapshot boot.img kernel, flashed it. Booted to recovery and flashed a pre-rooted rom zip. Easy as pie.
Thanks all.

Just flash KK firmware 108, root it, install recovery latest version, and afterwards flash any customised prerooted ROM of your choice.

This is too much work. Work that I have to do. It's the only way to root this ftf. damn it

It's up to you.

I've done it.
I made a pre-rooted ftf using PRF creator and compiling the SUPERSU v2.37 and Z1C locked dual recovery 2.8.12 from Nuts site.
You can use Xperifirm to download the the firmware, then use Flashtool to decrypt the fileset and create the FTF, then you're good to go.

Hello guys.Does this method works??Without unlocking the bootloader? http://techchomps.com/root-14-5-a-0-242-android-5-0-lollipop-on-sony-xperia-z1-compact/

Awesome, which version region did you use? Mind sharing?
I am almost running out of options

So after everything done can we restore TA partition and relock the bootloader?

I'm from the UK but I used the "Customized US" version. It works all the same, I've put together a UK one now but I'll need to wipe data before I can use it.
I'd share if I didn't have awful internet. The file is massive, unfortunately.
You'll find multiple threads on how to do different parts.
You need to create your pre-rooted firmware, then you'll need to download KK with Xperifirm (probably .108) and flash it with Flashtool.
Root KK using Easy Root Tool and install XZDualRecovery using the desktop client.
Once you're rooted with SuperSU/SuperUser and Recovery you can install the pre-rooted firmware (PRF) as a flashable zip within Recovery itself.
There's also work arounds for Xposed which you can find too, I've used them and it's all working as it should for now.
I also have a locked bootloader, so don't worry about unlocking it. I'll have a look around for the threads I used and post any I find.

I'll leave you to find your own SuperSU or SuperUser zip, same with XZDualRecovery as they're frequently updated so you're better off finding the latest versions.

But how can you flash 108 if you are already on 242 and you have a locked bootloader? You must unlock it first...

What I did is that I downgraded with Flashtool, rooted KK, and then flashed a prerooted rom through the recovery. No need to unlock the bootloader.

OK, there seems to be some loss in translation somewhere. Hope this will clear up some stuff:
1. Flash KitKat (kernel, system, everything).
2. Root it.
3. Install recovery (here)
4. Since you don't want to make your own pre-rooted firmware, here. Click on 'Google Drive' for the zip, and FTF. You need both.
5. Put the zip in your SD card/internal.
6. Boot into recovery and clear all data (dalvik, system, data, everything).
7. Flash the zip. DO NOT REBOOT.
8. Shutdown and use Flashtool to flash the .ftf you downloaded. Check System and Baseband on the 'exclude' column.
9. Have fun!

@dazzerfong OK,first of all thanks for your answer. What I'm asking is how did you do the first step with locked bootloader.
Flashtool->Flashmode->KitKat 157 FTF->Then root it blah blah?
Are these steps correct or not? Im about to try today cos I really miss root on my phone.
If you are already on Lollipop and your bootloader is locked you can get root this way.
1.Download the correct KitKat (.157) ROM for your country/operator using Xperifim.
Convert it to FTF using Flashtool. (there are tutorials, search)
2.Flash the FTF you created using Flashtool's Flashmode. Include everything.
3.Root your KitKat (.157) using the forum's tutorials and also install [NUT]'s recovery.
4.Boot into recovery and flash your pre rooted ROM in flashable zip format.
(There are also tutorials on how to create this with Xperifim and PRF programs).
5.Enjoy rooted Lollipop with locked bootloader.

Yep! All done with locked bootloader (or, if you want, unlocked, but you're wasting your time if you're unlocked). So, first you flash the FTF of a KitKat ROM.
Rooting, use Towelroot or something. No idea why, but Towelroot refuses to play with my TWRP (recovery), so I used the old method.

@dazzerfong
One last question cos I just did all the steps but I couldnt reboot into Lollipop after flashing my pre rooted rom zip file.
6. Boot into recovery and clear all data (dalvik, system, data, everything).
7. Flash the zip. DO NOT REBOOT.
8. Shutdown and use Flashtool to flash the .ftf you downloaded.
Check System and Baseband on the 'exclude' column.

On step 8 which FTF you mean exactly? I assume you mean the FTF from which you created
your pre rooted zip initially? In my case the Customized GR version?

You should have downloaded 2 things so far: the zip, and the FTF. That FTF is Lollipop stock: doesn't matter where it's from. Flash that in Flashtool, but remember to check 'System' and 'Baseband' in the 'Exclude' column.

Downgrade to .108 (with flashtool) in order to directly root the phone, whereas with .157, you'll have to flash an older kernel with flashtool in order to get root.
Once rooted, just get yourself a flashable prerooted firmware (zip file) and flash it from the recovery (after a wipe factory reset; wipe data; wipe cache; wipe Davilk Cache and Wipe System).

here's the other link i posted http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=48805157#post48805157
here's how. (my device is locked BL)
LINKS UPDATED!! (recovery)
1.Backed up my TA Partition
2.Flashed the official .569 ftf using flashtool
3.Unlocked my ZL's bootloader
4.Flash this kernel to get recovery (thanks Minthun46) http://forum.xda-developers.com/devdb/project/?id=700#downloads extract the boot.img and flash it using fastboot or flashtool (fastboot mode)
5.Flash Supersu fix zip and dual recovery (thanks NUT) SUPERSU fix.zip http://nut.xperia-files.com/download.php?dlid=U3VwZXJTVV9maXg=
recovery that i used http://nut.xperia-files.com (download the latest flashable zip for ZL)
6.Re flash .569 ftf exclude everything except kernel and fotakernel.
7.Restore TA Backup.
FOR UNLOCKED BL
just follow step 2, 4, 5, and 6
VOILA!!! device is now rooted and has working recovery
PS
Will only work for ZL that can be bootloader unlock.
Hit thanks if it helps you.
Don't put Locked BL in the title, you only managed to root because your phone was unlockable. Putting Locked BL in the title states that your bootloader can also be locked for this method to work, and but unless your ZL can be bootloader unlocked, this method cannot be used for locked BL

The first file is the unmodified version and can be flashed with flashtool (there's no root).
The other is the exact same process as in Nut's thread, (files were created with his tutorial). Earlier you needed to flashback to 4.2.2 because there was no root on 4.3 and therefore no DualRecovery. If you have recovery, then just flash the zip, poweroff and flash the stripped ftf. Same process...nothing is different.

The official version simply flashes your phone back to stock by removing root and recovery. If I ever sale the phone, ill use that file to restore everything back to factory.
Steps for flashable version:
1 - Since you are already rooted and I assume you have recovery, upload the flashable zip on your SDCard
2 - Flash the ZIP using recovery and power off WITHOUT rebooting
3 - Flash the stripped FTF using FlashTool
Boot your phone and you're done
What if my phone is not rooted, bootloader is locked and is on .569 (4.3) version?? Thanks.

My bootloader is locked too and is unlockable (at the moment), bootloader isn't important. If you want root on your 569, you have no choice, you need to flash back a stock FTF 4.1.2 or 4.2.2. whichever version works with DoomLord's 1 click root method. Once that is done, you install recovery and flash the zip via recovery, power off phone, flash stripped FTF via Flashtool and you're back on rooted 569.
Flashback to 4.1 o 4.2?? Tried flashing the .423 kernels only buy my phone get's stuck on the boot "sony" screen. Any tips?

Which firmware did you flash back to? 10.3.1.A.0.244
1 - Flash 244 FW
2 - Flash Kernel from 423 and reboot phone
3 - Root using "DooMLoRD_Easy-Rooting-Toolkit_v18_perf-event-exploit"
4 - Flash back Kernel from 244
and then go on with installing recovery to perform next steps to go back on rooted 569
It has to work, I did a million times!
If your stuck on a bootloop right now, just flash back the whole 244 FTF. it will put you back on full stock.

You can do it with the 67 as well. Process is the same so either 244 or 67.
I always use Titanium Backup to make a backup of all my apps/games, I have the paid version coz I have about 100 apps and don't feel like restoring them 1 at a time afterwards.
I just got an OTA notification about the new 10.4.1.B.0.101 on my phone. Ill probably be creating the files for this one tonight, so maybe you should wait another day before flashing the 569 .... 101 is newer. :victory:

[GUIDE][Unlocked BL][Update and Root Xperia ZL KK 4.4.2]

Guys just sharing how I updated my ZL to the latest KK 4.4.2 and ROOT, in case someone is interested. Total time it took me around 2hrs using 10MB connection.
1. Downgrade to 4.2 Nordic version. Optional if youre 4.3 is already in Nordic.
2. Relock bootloader.
3. Use SUS to download and install the 4.4.2 update.
4. Decrypt and create your own FTF from the files downloaded by SUS.
5. Unlock bootloader.
6. Flash CM11 KK boot.img using fastboot.
7. Boot to CWM, flash supersu update zip to root the phone
8. Relfash STOCK Sony Kernel using the FTF created in step4.
9. Enjoy ROOT access.
10. Optional - relock bootloader.
Disclaimer - by following the steps, your warranty is VOID now. BUT you get to have the latest version of Android, ROOT and customization for your phone. I have made necessary backups to restore everything to STOCK, including DRM keys in case I need to go for warranty.
Edit - i'll update later with download links for flashtool, SUS, CM11 bootimg, chainfire supersu update
Additional screenie for fastboot commands -
2 questions, I'd love to do this, but...
1. Where can I find this nordic version? Is this an ftf somewhere?
2. How do you relock the bootloader? Is there something available? I can't seem to find it...

In your SDCard, simply delete the files in the XZDualRecovery or rename the XZDR.prop. If you delete them, they get recreated anyway and fixes that problem you had with 101

This FTF works to UB and LB or just for UB. Any bugs, something special wich we need to know after flashing?

Locked or unlocked BL isn't important with these files.
Just upload the ZIP to your SDCard and flash it in recovery, then power off your phone without rebooting and flash the stripped FTF with Flashtool and you're done.
Thank you guys!
But for those (like my self) who are not experts on this, could you please, provide a detailed (step by step) guide on how to flash it?
If I already flashed it to kitkat (not rooted), can I do it over this one?
Regards

I flashed it with CWM but TWRP should also work without issues.

My BL is locked, there are easier ways if you have an unlocked bootloader but this will work whether your BL is locked or unlocked. Ive been running it for a few hours now and no issues, root and dual recovery's are working.

If you already flashed 4.4.2 then you do not have root and therefore cannot flash these. You will need to flash back to an older 4.2.2 so you can root and then install recovery. Once you have recovery the steps are:
1 - upload the zip to your SDCard and flash it via recovery
2 - After flash is successful, turn off your phone without rebooting.
3 - Flash the stripped FTF file via FlashTool and boot your phone.
That's it

[Q] I want to root my lollipop version on my Z1 Compact

I tried to update to lollipop and root it but to of no avail. I tried to read many blogs and F*pieces but can not get any thing good. I am using KitKiat 4.4.4 14.A.0.157 rooted. I want to download the latest lollipop version and root it with Custom recovery. I do not want any messed with custom lollipops as i do not trust other people easily. If there is some smooth tool method to simply click and run root method , kindly share with me. If it is not possible and the only way to get a rooted lollipop is by using custom messed up lollipop ftf then paste it here in great simple details I am ready to follow this method. Thanks :laugh::silly::silly::silly::highfive::highfive:

1. Using XperiFirm (Xperia Firmware Downloader developed by Igor Eisberg) to download desired firmware from Sony server.
2. Using Flash Tool to create your own TFT.
3. Using PRFCreator (Pre-Rooted Firmware Creator developed by zxz0O0) to create your own flashable zip file of Pre-rooted Lollipop firmware.
You may also need SuperSU Update and XZDualRecovery
On my Z1c Lollipop i become no root access. Not with prerooted flashable zip and not with my selfmade flashable zip.
My Z1c is LB and on rooted .108 firmware. After flash preerooted Lollipop the SuperSu app gives my Apps rootaccess, but the apps mean no root viable. (TitaniumBackup or SD-Maid)
Why?

If for some reason the "downloaded prerooted" method does not work, whatever went wrong will probably also prevent your selfmade zip from working. So I'd try to get the downloaded one to work before trying a homegrown one.

Above said is step-by-step to get flashable zip file only. Install it on your phone as follows:
1. Downgrade to KitKat (4.4.2 is recommended because it can be rooted directly)
2. Install Custom Recovery (Philz Touch is recommendable because I have boot loop with TWRP)
you cap bypass these step if already have Custom Recovery
3. Copy flashable zip file to SD Card
4. Reboot your phone to Recovery mode and wipe you phone (wipe for clean installation is recommended) or format system. DO NOT REBOOT after that.
5. Install flashable zip file from SD Card then powever off your phone
6. Using FlashTool to flash your phone with TFT file EXCLUDE SYSTEM
Enjoy your phone with rooted Lollipop

That method will work as long as You have a root, no matter the version. So You can use the 4.4.4 one with root access too.

When I followed that process for manually creating a customized lollipop version for my phone, It created ftf file. Now moments ago I was excited to follow the FLASH FROM THE PHILZ TOUC RECOVERY, I formatted everything and now my phone cant use FTF file because It needs the flashable zip format file. How in the world i transform my FTF file into FLASHABLE.zip file??? Be quick because I am now going back to root my KitKat; root it; install philz touch and then follow the method you provided. Tell me how to make ftf into zip file?:cyclops::cyclops:

You can use the PRF Creator to create a flashable FTF. You need the SuperSU and recovery too for it.

Hi can you be more specific on what to wipe at philz touch because there are lots to wipe options in the philz recovery, do i have to wipe all? also from twrp's recovery so please be specific what to wipe because im afraid to wipe all that doesnt have to be wiped,
also after installing flashable zip in the recovery turning off the phone isn't an option there is only restart button there so is it alright to reboot phone after installing flashable zip in recovery then just turn it off after and continue to using flashtool?
and last one, at using flashtool ist it the stock firmware that i need to flash? is it alright to exclude all? or do i have to check the wipes there and also the kernels below excluding system only? thanks

Hi, I tried this multiple times, im rooted 4.4.4 then installed dual recovery then from one of those recovery then i installed "flashsable.zip" after installing flashable zip which is in "step 5" you mentioned turning off phone, do i really need to do the "step 6"? because i notice something in step 5 since after installing the flashable zip thru recovery there is no turn off option so i choose to reboot then i noticed i started my phone with lollipop installed and superSU installed, but i still did whats in your procedure which makes things complicated since i thought if i didnt continue to the whole process maybe something might go wrong , so i turned off my phone and continued to step 6, i flashed my phone using the stock firmware of lollipop then what happened is the superSU is gone.
so my main point is do i really have to continue to step 6?? or even just up to step 5 is fine?
if continuing to step 6 is important please be more specific thanks

You have to do Step 6 just in case flashable zip file contain SYSTEM ONLY (include Options were not checked when using PRFCreator).
In Step 6, flash your phone with FTF file EXCLUDE SYSTEM. That mean you need to check on System Option within the box of Exclude.
Folks, we already have a thread covering EXACTLY this question - was it really necessary to open a new one to ask all questions over and over again?
Look here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/son...lp/rooting-z1-compact-stock-lollipop-t3090021
The instructions included there helped me getting from rooted .157 to rooted Lollipop without touching my locked Bootloader, so they might work for others as well.

THanks buddy. I got my lollipop rooted and working. But there is one thing itching me about lollipop. Even though the camera result looks great in this new OS, but the OS new design theme looks sluggish. I do not feel it is working like it should. I mean a very bad version from SONY. KitKat theme was way more simpler and lighter than this lollipop ****piece. Besides cleanmaster keeps telling me the RAM USAGE around 68%-70% all the time:silly:, even though I applied the same precautions I had on kitkat installation. Kitkat used to run on 70% in heavy usage, otherwise it would run lighter around 46% RAM.
Summing up. Lollipop Version for SONY PHONES, SUCKS
