After 5.0.5.1 Updrade Firestarter App Stopped Working - Fire TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've noticed that after the amazon fire stick OS 5.0.5.1 update it automatically removes and blocks the firestrter app. I've tried to re-install it but the OS removes it again. No issues with the Kodi app noticed...I resorted to lunching it from the managed Installed applications menu and it works fine.
1. What's going on?
2. Will it be a fix for this soon?

http://forum.xda-developers.com/fir...home-launcher-replacement-app-t3118135/page60

If your rooted you can disable the app blocker service, and re-enable firestarter and firedtvlauncher.
Code:
adb shell
Code:
su
Code:
pm disable com.amazon.tv.settings/com.amazon.tv.settings.tv.AppDisableService
Code:
pm enable de.belu.firestarter
Code:
pm unhide de.belu.firestarter
Code:
pm enable com.altusapps.firedtvlauncher
Code:
pm unhide com.altusapps.firedtvlauncher
Sent from my HTC6535LVW using XDA-Developers mobile app
The home button does not work to get to firestarter, but can still be set to launch at startup and accessed from the apps menu.

[FIX] Wifi Sleep Policy

So I'm sure you all have noticed, especially if downloading something, when the screen turns off the Wifi on the Fire "sleeps" until the screen comes back on. So you try to change that setting. But low and behold....ITS MISSING!?
I come with a fix. I'll warn ya, its messy.
ADB:
Connect the Kindle Fire to your computer using a USB cable and tap "Disconnect Now"
Connect to the Fire using adb and open a shell and type adb shell (or your operating system's equivalent) and hit enter
run
Code:
su
run
Code:
cd /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases
run
Code:
cp settings.db settings.db.bak
run
Code:
cp settings.db /mnt/sdcard
Mount the Kindle Fire on the computer
Copy settings.db off your sdcard and onto your desktop
Open SQLite Browser and open the settings.db file that you just placed on your desktop
In the SQLite Browser, open the "Browse Data" tab, select "system" from the table list; scroll to the bottom.
Click the "New Record" button.
Double-click the first blank entry area to bring up the value editor.
Type
Code:
wifi_sleep_policy
Click Apply.
Double click the second blank entry area.
Type one of these integers in (Whichever you prefer) :
Sleep When Screen is Off -----> 0
Sleep When NOT Plugged In ---> 1
Never Sleep --------------------> 2
Click Apply.
Click Save.
Copy the settings.db file you just modified back onto your Kindle Fire.
Click the Disconnect button on your Fire.
Open your shell window and type
Code:
adb shell
(if you are no longer in shell or closed your shell window)
run
Code:
su
run
Code:
cp /mnt/sdcard/settings.db /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db
run
Code:
cd /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases
run
Code:
chmod 660 settings.db
run
Code:
chown system.system settings.db
run
Code:
ls -l
The last command verifies that your modified settings.db matches the same user and group and has the same permissions as your original (settings.db.bak)
Reboot and Enjoy!
Wouldn't be easier to just use on of the apps that does this from market that way it's easy to switch between them

Some people have had issues with said apps. If the User wants yo use the apps and they work, fine. If they want to use this method, fine. I'm just offering this as an option. Not saying anyone has to do this...
Hmmm....my kindle cannot boot up after applying the change stuck on the "kindle fire" screen

Got it fixed - step 26 should be "chown system.system settings.db" ("." instead of ":")
works great, thanks for the info and the other posters mentioning the invalid colon.

thanks for noticing the typo/issue.
edited op. its now fixed
I need to root my Fire first to do this correct?
tried this last week and have "mixed" results.
sometimes wifi seems to be in after turning screen on. sometimes the wifi is off and going inti the status menu shows its turned off. the setting has to be toggled.
since then I've been thinking, doesn't spare parts have this option? the setting is already there since I modified the file. I'm wondering if spare parts would successfully do this.
Never thought of that!
Try it. It cant hurt!
Won't have to worry about this much longer though.
Just broke my Kindle reverting the mods. I didn't set the permissions DOH!
Spare parts seems to work on my KF. Just installed it from the market and let it go to sleep. Turned it back on, and wifi was still connected.
EDIT: Never mind. I guess I didn't give it enough time. Spare parts did not work to keep wifi from going to sleep.
This is an 'issue' they could correct with a software update right?
For those who don't want to chance this mod, I downloaded "Wifi Keep Alive" from the market and it worked like a charm.

Do you have an apk for this? Thanks! (I only ask because I have yet to root my KF and would like to sideload it and I can't seem to find a proper apk searching google...crazy I know, lol)
sqlite3 tools
It can edit settings.db on kindle fire. You do not need copy out .
sqlite3 /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db
insert into system (name, value) values ("wifi_sleep_policy", “2” );
ctrl+d
It will be ok.

I attached the WiFi Keep Alive apk. It's been working great for me.
So, I thought I set permissions correctly on my settings.db.bak file before deleting my new settings.db and renaming the backup, but apparently I did not because I am in a boot loop. Anyone know of a way out of this situation?
Nvm, used zergRush to tmp root and change permissions.
It would be nice if we could have wifi stay on only if plugged in.

WiFi Keep alive has three modes:
1. WiFi off if screen off (White widget)
2. WiFi on if screen off (Green Widget)
3. WiFi on if screen off & charging (Amber Widget)
I keep it on Green personally...

Is it possible to block AFV stick from updating ?

I've seen that Amazon firesticks have updated their software which has effected Firestarter. I just wanted to know three things:
Is it possible to block amazon updates? I've got a virgin superhub router.
Is there a way to backup the entire firestick and not just Kodi?
Can you previous firmwares versions be restored/downgraded on firesticks?
The last thing I think anyone wants is for an update that wipes of Kodi altogether :crying:
Yes, you can block updates. See my guide here: http://www.aftvnews.com/block
If the device is rooted and running TWRP custom recovery, you can backup and restore the entire device at once. There is no TWRP for the Fire TV Stick currently, but rbox is working on it. For now, all you can do is backup individual files and folders, like app data, but depending on where the data is stored, you may still need to be rooted. App data in /sdcard can be backed up without root, but app data in /data requires root to access.
You can only downgrade if the device is rooted and running TWRP custom recovery. There is an old downgrading method that requires root and uses the default recovery, but I have not tested it on Fire OS 5 devices.
Hey thanks for that, I think I managed to prevent the firestick from any updates using adb + terminal from you pointing me on the right track.
hi AFTVnews.
is the adb shell pm hide com.amazon.device.software.ota command still works ? i have tried yesterday and it worked fine, and today i try again the same commend on second device (fire stick) and i get : unknown command 'hide'

I'm on a firestick with 5.0.5 and ran the command no problem, and disconnected properly. I had issues though after a few fire stick reboots where my firestick was connected to my router and had an ip, but had no internet connection. Basically it seemed like the command blocked the firestick from doing anything. I used the unhide command and rebooted a few more times and then ran the command to hide it once more and rebooted a few more times. Now it appears it is blocking updates and i can still use kodi.
I also have been having router issues, so it could be my router.

Hi Aftvnews, how do you delete the update cache on the firestick? I got a new firestick but it was downloading update before I could stop it. It's there but if I can get into the folder to delete it that would be great. I saw mention how to do it but didn't show the command lines. Thanks!

The command only works on software version 5.0 and up. If that Stick is on 54.1.2.3 or older, then the only way to block updates is externally through a router or OpenDNS (method 3 and 4 in my guide).

Your Stick must be rooted to delete the update file from /cache. Here's how to do it:
Code:
adb shell
su
rm -f /cache/*.bin

Hi aftvnews can you show me how this command works for a mac? I just rooted a fire stick right now using king root. It says root was sucessful but I don't want to reboot as the update is on there. If I could delete this update before the update that would be good but I'm using mac terminal and typed in your command but it's not working. Thanks

First, be sure there is a space after the "f"
You won't see anything come up on the screen. I also just learned a few hours ago that there is an alternate location for the update file. So do the following to clear out both locations:
Code:
adb shell
su
rm -f /cache/*.bin
rm -f /sdcard/Android/data/com.amazon.device.software.ota/files/*.bin
Perfect that did the trick the update was deleted. I rebooted and still have root and uodate is gone. Thanks!

Restart Kodi 'shortcut' and other stuff (solved)

If you're like me, Kodi gets hung-up sometimes. If you sideload 'Terminal Shortcut Pro' from the play store, you can create a shortcut icon on the home screen using Nova Launcher (and other launchers I presume) to force-stop Kodi and restart it with one click. You can also use the app to launch your saved commands. And the app works perfectly on the FireTV including navigation with the remote.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.hp.terminalshortcut
Open the app and click the plus sign to add a new command, type the below commands and tell it ro run as su.
Then create a shortcut on the homescreen to your specific command using Nova.
RESTART KODI:
am force-stop org.xbmc.kodi
am start -n org.xbmc.kodi/.Splash
Other commands you can create shortcuts for:
KILL-ALL (kills all background apps):
am kill-all
And I'm sure there are other terminal 'shortcut' commands that folks can think of...delete thumbnails, block updates, etc.
Has anyone found an app that can do this yet? Without using the shortcuts/different home launcher? I have been looking for a app which kills all apps running or something similar but have not had any joy for my Rooted Fire Tv2?
You can use Terminal Shortcut for that i think. Just create the am kill-all command. You will just open the app and then click the command. Have to be rooted for it to work tho im pretty sure...

I tried both commands today, but just comes back with an error???? I'm rooted, on AFTV2 with Busybox, & kodi running off my SD card, I typed the commands exactly as you wrote but dunno why it wont work? Have you any ideas mate?
I installed this appmanager which allows you to launch apps then go to a settings menu to force closed pretty quick.

DEBLOAT Script XZ1 Compact - STOCK Pie - G8441_47.2.A.11.228 (No root, Android 9)

This is debloat of Google stuff (Play and Services) / Sony / other / tracking apps etc. Updated version for Android 9 (Pie), you get better battery life and better privacy.
The main goal is mimic custom rom with fully working stock camera/connectivity/fingerprint and no Google bloat/track and as consequance, better battery life.
Root not needed for debloat, but necessary for further optimizations. (with underclocked CPUs, tuned RUN_IN_BACKGROUND privilege and BOOT_COMPLETED intent action of installed/system apps, you can reach 7 days on one charge - with deepsleep active 92% of time. /No wakelock tuning/)
Batch script reads file deb.xz1c.txt and process all lines which does not start with #. Lines/apps with starts with @ are disabled only (mainly Google components which don't like being uninstalled.)
---What You Need---
-you need working adb shell (or Flashtool), debloat_xz1c.bat and deb.xz1c.txt must be in the same directory. For example ...\Flashtool\x10flasher_lib\
-activated developer options - adb debugging
-have active screen security (pin code, password, fingerprint) so you can deactivate google as administrator app and agents of trust in settings.
-check there is no google in find my device etc.
-default Android 9 sms/mms app is Google framework dependent so you need a free alternative. QKMS is way better then default.
-install Firefox or another non-google browser. (you can enable/disable Chrome in deb.xz1c.txt)
debloat_xz1c.bat
Code:
SETLOCAL ENABLEDELAYEDEXPANSION
:: give user some time to respond to adb/root notification on phone o_o
adb devices
timeout 2
adb shell id
timeout 3
echo off
:: name of input file (deb.xz1c.txt)
for /f "eol=#" %%f in (deb.xz1c.txt) do (
set line=%%f
set fchar=!line:~0,1!
call :work_clear_data
if "!fchar!" == "@" call :work_disable
if not "!fchar!" == "@" call :work_uninst
)
goto :end
:work_clear_data
for /f "tokens=1,2 delims=^=" %%a in ("%line%") do (
echo --------[ %%b ]
echo Force-Stopping and clearing app's data:
adb shell am force-stop %%b
adb shell pm clear %%b
)
goto :eof
:work_uninst
for /f "tokens=1,2 delims=^=" %%a in ("%line%") do (
echo 'Uninstalling' app:
adb shell pm uninstall -k --user 0 %%b
)
goto :eof
:work_disable
for /f "tokens=1,2 delims=^=" %%a in ("%line%") do (
echo Disabling app:
adb shell pm disable-user %%b
)
goto :eof
:end
This is wip debloat list - minimum google stuff, no play services, sony and other. Ready for F-Droid. I am using alternative launcher/email/offline calendar/etc.
You can disable specific app without uninstalling it (place @ as first character on line).
deb.xz1c.txt
Code:
# script ignores lines starting with # ,lines(apps) starting with @ will be disabled only, lines without # or @ will be uninstalled.
# lines starting with #! and @! are important for system to function corectly. Don't remove them.
# add # to ignore
# add @ to disable
# remove # or @ to clear app's data and uninstall.

You can go back if you screw something
to enable disabled app
Code:
adb shell pm enable <name of package>
to install "uninstalled" app
Code:
adb shell cmd package install-existing <name of package>
my setup: xZ1c stock G8441_47.2.A.11.228, Android 9 + Magisk 20.1 + TWRP 3.3.1
This seems like a good thread to ask.
I went a step further to debloat my XZ1C and deleted all the apks that I thought were unnecessary.
Unfortunately i I deleted the apk responsible for the video editor (the one that pops up for example after taking a 120fps video with the stock camera app). I thought the apk was the one for the movie creator but instead it was the video editor.
I wish for a kind soul to
1. Tell me the package name of the video editor so I won't delete it again.
2. Upload the untouched apk for me so that I can restore it \ tell me how to extract it from the original ftf
reserved for rooted devices optimizations
It removed Play store.
OP thanks for posting this. I think I might try it out. I currently have Lineage 16 on my XZ1 Compact but it has issues with 5Ghz wifi and in my circumstance, I need to put on airplane mode for the GPS to work.
100% newb question - how do I run the script in adb? I've used adb to disable/enable apps but how do I run a batch file? I tried to find answers online but no solid answers.
Edit: found the answer - I double clicked the bat file.
@megaice
"Root not needed for debloat, but necessary for further optimizations. (with underclocked CPUs, tuned RUN_IN_BACKGROUND privilege and BOOT_COMPLETED intent action of installed/system apps, you can reach 7 days on one charge - with deepsleep active 92% of time. /No wakelock tuning/) "
Are this further optimization implemented?

After applying this debloating script, I lag when I go to bluetooth > connection preferences, it works but freezer for 10 seconds, solution?
Edit: Installing uninstalled apps doesn't work, or how to get it work exactly? Use app path or just package name? Does apk has to be on PC or not? Need explanation :/
@megaice thanks for this script.
is it possible to modify the script so it uninstalls the app for all users, not just current or default user?
how to add packages to the script? i have some packages in my version of stock rom, e.g. Prime Video, for which I can't locate the package in /system/app or /system/priv-app
thanks!

Hi There,
1) script curently "uninstalls" app for all users, it uninstall it for user 0 (user 0 = root), so all users are affected.
2) you can list and sort installed packages in you rom by android shell command "pm list packages -f". switch -f means show install path. Some examples are here.

I am using bluetooth with BT repro/audio on car and home system without a problem. Did you try connect to other BT hardware?

If you want back uninstalled app, you can enable it by "adb shell cmd package install-existing <package_name_of_app>". The app is still on rom in your phone, just deactivated.

Hi there.
Yea, it's feature. You can edit the script and enable google bloat if you want.

thanks! I still see the apk files of the system apps I "uninstalled" when browsing my root folder at /system/app though. and total storage space used has not changed. is that meant to happen?

Yes, as all it's doing is disabling, you're better off using Titanium Backup or you can use the pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.insertapp.name if you have root to remove them completely.

thanks - i do have root and plan to try this approach, but would doing this make safetynet fail?

just tried this but it does not uninstall - it surfaces an error and then does nothing. I'm also not able to uninstall using Titanium backup. Not sure why but I am on stock rom with magisk root, nothing special

Try adb shell first then the command.

yes, have already tried that of course ... error message says cannot uninstall. might be due to the internal drive being encrypted?
Great work! Saved me a lot of time looking for these unwanted package names.
However, the script broke my themes app. Sometimes it even shows a "has stopped" message.
Is this intentional or something went wrong? Which disabled app has to be re-enabled to fix it? Can't really find anything that could stop it from working.
I attached the customized "deb.xz1c.txt" file I've used.
Bash version of the script:
Code:
#!/bin/bash
set -eu
exec 3< ${1:-deb.xz1c.txt}
while read -u 3 LINE; do
[[ $LINE =~ ^#|^$ ]] && continue
APP=${LINE##*=}
echo ======= $APP =======
adb shell am force-stop $APP
adb shell pm clear $APP
if [[ $LINE =~ ^@ ]]; then
adb shell pm disable-user $APP ||:
else
adb shell pm uninstall -k --user 0 $APP ||:
fi
done

To make it easier there is a pc app called app manager. It connects via adb. You can disable/Uninstall and other things without typing any commands.
