Camera Focus Issue (Close Up/Macro) - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just got my 5X yesterday brand new off a buddy of mine from Craigslist (brand new 32GB Ice for $180, hell of a deal). But besides that, I am loving it so far. The camera is pretty great, but I am having a issue of things not wanting to focus up close. It will try to focus and just become blurry. Any help? I am on stock 6.0.1 using Google Camera.

how close are you trying to get to your subject? I believe the closest it will focus is about 100mm (4inch)

This is about as close as I have been able to get, anything closer than this and it refuses to focus.

Yeah, same here. That's the closest we will be able to get, hardware limitations.

Yeah I was trying 3 inches or closer, so that could be it. I heard EIS can be enabled with root. Would that help? Or maybe using Open Camera, etc?

Camera quality sucks compared to iphone

I travel and use my phone to scan documents, and my camera is suppose to be better than the iphones, it sucks, there is no way I get as good an image as my friends iphone does, whats the problem?
Actually closer to useless as a scanner.

Stock camera app?
Have you tried settings?
Have you viewed it on your comp yet?
Etc etc etc...
My camera take pics just fine..maybe you need to look in some settings, but if that's too difficult I'm sure someone would gladly trade you their iPhone. Cause that phone is useless indeed.
Ps.- bashing the phone in the section its in probably isn't a good idea. Most ppl here like their phone and calling it useless might make them less inclined to help you

bashing the camera yes, not the phone, yes I am rooted running stock rom, I have not messed much with the settings, have you tried taking a picture of a document and see how good of a scan you get?
I will look at the setting, but I have my doubts that I will ever get as good an image as the iphone.
Seriously HTC get it together, I should not have to carry an additional scanner.

You should mess with the settings or you're just not getting a good picture.
What app are you using? or are you just taking pictures and uploading them?
I have both the iphone 3GS and my Inc 2. I also have access to an iphone 4 and 4S and I have to say that the inc 2 camera is on par with the 4S camera which is supposed to have the best optics out of all the iphones.
I can post up results too if you like? Are you sure your lens isn't smudged? or possibly defective?
IPhone 4s and dinc2 both have 8mp cameras bro. Adjust your settings I know that when I was running stock 8mp wasn't the default

So your saying I got screwed on my brand new phone.
I am not using any program just taking a picture, after all that's what my buddy does with his phone.
Maybe I will go by the Verizon store and see if the phone they have does better than mine.
My buddy had the iphone 4, and now has the 4S, and I have to say the document picture taken with the Dinc is no good at all.
I will post pics.

yes post results of pictures of a document under normal lighting conditions, also of an object with normal/low lighting conditions with both the dinc2 and i4s, I would like to see that.
I really like this phone but I have to agree with the OP, it's difficult to get a good photo in doors with this phone, I got better pictures with my HD2!

I have not compared the quality of pictures, just images of documents, if I am trying to focus binoculars, of cameras, I focus on trying to read something, but in this case I need the documents to mail them in PDF format after printing them.
I'd have to agree that the iphone 4s does have better picture quality. It is newer hardware after all. The dinc2 camera works perfectly for me though. You have to remember it's a phone with a camera, not a camera with a phone.

To be honest you're never going to get the quality of a scanner from your phone, and indoor lighting is generally terrible as shown here.
I'll take a pic using the iphone 4S tonight and post it. I'm going to redo all 3 that way we can have a test with similar variables.

I see the difference in the 3GS, better than the Dinc also.
I tried some scanner software but the quality was the same as a regular picture.

I think you need to adjust your metering in settings. I'm able to do that on cm7 not sure if its an option with the stock camera app, but the consensus is that the sense camera is better than the aosp camera. When metering mode is changed from center weighted to frame average on cm7 i get no focal spot blur like i do in a shot with center weight metering.
Maybe someone with a sense camera can chime in on what metering options are available with it but changing that might help your focal blur on documents

Make the camera... A decent one?

I come from a galaxy s ii which has a really nice camera imo, I really, really wanna get the galaxy nexus since the price is dropping like crazy, it's 490 $ on Amazon im thinking by the first week of April it will be somewhere between 460-480 $, the only thing stopping me is the camera, a friend of mine has the nexus and i think the pictures are... Horrible, dull, washed out, has the quality of the pictures improved with the updates? Is it true that you can get better looking pictures with cm9?
I wanted to get the one x, which looks incredible but the cheapest price you can preorder its 675 $, it has sense, I don't care if it's sense 4, im sick of half working roms, having to lose my apps and install them again, that's why I want to get a pure ics device
Decide for yourself

You can try some 3rd party camera apps to help you tweak a little.
The Galaxy Nexus is definitely capable of taking good quality pictures. Its just not a certainty when you turn the camera on that every shot will be great. That's unfortunate but the camera isn't a complete POS.
not only 3rd party apps can tweak the pictures, you can also push files to force higher quality via the gnex toolkit (i did it and i think it did something. im satisfied with the pictures which is maybe because i know its a phone and for everything else i use my dslr)

Thanks for the read, as a photographer I'm still on the fence after reading it though. I already knew all about the sensors etc. If they had just found a way to maybe use a larger lens and squeeze in a 6 or 8mp sensor I'd have gotten the One a long time ago.
And just to help contribute to some digital photography knowledge: a 6mp camera translates into about an 8x10 print without having any loss in photo quality.

As a photographer, I'm surprised that a phone camera would be a breaking point for your purchase. There is currently no phone on the market that is of enough quality to reliably provide pictures for anything other than social media and email transfer.

Well I wouldn't use my phone camera for a job, I'm not saying that all. Maybe it's more the perfectionist in me than the photographer? I've been pretty happy with my Rezounds macro capability and I like having a little wiggle room for cropping. I'm not sure if I can upload a full res example, but maybe that's for the best. It might be seen as bragging or potentially argumentative and that's not my intention. It's also the lack of microSD memory card, and non-removable battery stuff, you know. I'm probably getting one pretty soon anyway though. My phone has started acting up. I'm just one of those people, indecisive and hesitant for the most part (nothing to be proud of).

I use a high end DSLR for most pictures I take, but when I want a quick picture of something, I don't find the HTC One camera experience enjoyable at all. I don't enjoy the process of using the camera, and I generally don't enjoy the end result.
Maybe I'm just spoiled because I have an amazing DSLR, but personally, I have found the camera to be the weakest part of the HTC One.

Out of curiosity, what do you find unenjoyable about the experience of using the camera?
I think it's safe to say that many of us use DSLR's for our most important pictures and I doubt anyone expects the camera of the phone to be either a replacement for a DSLR or nearly as good. I use my One mostly for pics and videos of my kids when it's the only camera I have on me. As long as the pics are clear and natural looking, I'm pretty happy. The most disappointing aspect of the camera to me is actually the camcorder. I agree the camera is the weakest aspect of the HTC One, but with such a great device otherwise, this doesn't mean I think the camera is bad by any means.
On another note, I'm surprised by the users who have said 4.3 has offered no improvement in camera performance. My pictures look much better since updating.

I agree with using the One when it's the only camera I have, same here. However, I don't know what it is, but I just find myself not even bothering taking pictures with my phone anymore since I've gotten the one. I was using an iPhone 5 for almost a year before the One (alongside a GS3), and I wouldn't hesitate to whip out my phone and take a quick picture. But since I've gotten the One, a lot of times I think "Hey! I should take a picture!" then I just... don't feel like it. I can't pinpoint it exactly. I take probably 1/10th the amount of pictures with my phone than I used to. And I LOVE photography.
I feel that such an amazing phone should have an equally amazing camera, but for me, it leaves something to be desired.

This is a really interesting point and I think I somewhat agree. While owning an iPhone 4s, I snapped pictures all the time. Many of these were of my newborn in good lighting so image quality was generally very good. When I decided to go back to Android, I decided camera quality, ease of camera use, and likelihood of camera use were all very important considerations. I bought the HTC One EVO on Sprint and right away realized the camera wouldn't cut it. The image quality and experience left me inclined to leave the phone in my pocket rather than catch a moment on camera. I returned it and bought a GS3, the camera on which I loved and used all the time, both confidently and happily. I switched to VZW and got the S4. Maybe I'm crazy, but the S4 camera left me disappointed more often than not and again I felt less inclined to take pictures. I sold it and bought the One. I don't use the camera as often as I used the S3, and I'm not sure why though many things are different now. Maybe most significant of those differences is the fact that my once newborn is now a very active toddler who is very difficult to capture on camera in general. However, and despite this, I generally don't have as much confidence/likelihood of use of the camera on the One as I did with the S3 and iP4s.
Not trying to hijack the thread, I just wanted to share my experience and a possible reason for the hesitance peopleare having with using their cameras.
So....I really really wanted to want the One. Stayed up watching YouTube reviews last night and finally thought "ok, I'm sold." I even went into a Verizon store today and messed with one for 30-40 min just to make sure...I wasn't feeling it, I wish I did. I think they tried to make the camera more user friendly and simplistic so the general public and iPhone users might be willing to give it a chance. I think it backfired. I kept thinking "Am I in video mode or photo..ok, zoe on/off got it. How do I...why can't I...where are my options? Is that all I can adjust?" I know there are 3rd party apps that are great and roms etc. I just feel like I'm able to do things on my stock Rezound without having to jump through so many hoops. I think the One's version of sense is more limiting than I prefer. I like my options. Some of you Mac users might understand what I mean: I have snow leopard and I refuse to use lion, mountain lion, or even the new free Mavericks.
I love the One's screen, form factor, the way the memory is basically just one partition (the Rezound has it split up into 3, it's very frustrating), speakers and how snappy and fast it is.
This is just my opinion, I hope it doesn't rub anyone the wrong way. I know how taboo it is to not like the newer sense versions, almost blasphemy! Don't chew my head off!

hey I think about how Sense 2.1 would run on the HTC One all the time, lol
Sense has changed in many ways for the better, and some for the worse.
Sense 5 is a great leap from 3.5/3.6 and 4.0+ IMHO, but I do miss 2.1
That was my favorite up until now. Sense 5.5 brings some amazing battery life.
I personally like.. NEVER use my camera, so to me a camera is the last thing I need working.
For someone with kids though, and wants to document things, or travels, I'd imagine it's the first thing on the list.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and yours is just that, yours.
What would you like to see? It won't do much of anything but I can make a new post on HTC Elevate about suggestions to change.

Oh cool, I actually just joined elevate about a week ago...I still haven't really taken the time to figure out how it works and what I can actually contribute but this seems like a whole other thread. Like 4.3 camera too
I honestly don't remember too much about the Sense 5.0 camera because shortly after I got my One I had it rooted and running CM 10.2. I run a used car lot so I'm constantly taking pictures of inventory for the various websites I post to. I have found the camera in HDR mode on CM to be fantastic. I had a 10MP regular 'point and shoot' camera that I retired because the photos from the One turn out so well. My guess is that people just have different expectations of what a CELL PHONE camera should produce. But if I was able to retire my regular camera, the One camera can't be that bad.

My s3 was best phone camera. My ONE is pink, so much pink and focus is hit or miss. I'm on the fence between waiting for an update or sending it back to htc to fix. I use to take pictures daily, now it's just a frustrating disappointment.

Great thanks!! I would post pics of my ones photos but don't know how to via mobile lol

I just can't get rid of my Galaxy Nexus...

I was so excited to get my Play Store Nexus, and loved almost everything about it. Later I sold it to buy a Galaxy Note but quickly sold the Note and bought another Nexus- which I later sold for a Note 2. I kept the GN2 for a while, then sold it and bought another Nexus which I have still. I recently bought a Note 3, but I can't seem to get rid of my Nexus.
I keep coming back to the Galaxy Nexus- and I would sell my Note in favor of my Nexus if I could just find a way to fix the camera quality.
That's my question: is there a way too improve my camera quality?
Right now I'm on CM11.
Any ideas?
You can't change the quality only the experience.. Example would be hold to focus let go instead of tapping to take the picture
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
I was thinking about upgrading my nexus when my contract is up in early March but with all the kit kat development going on my phone feels like it has new life in it. I know my next phone will need to have a unlocked bootloader but I could care less about the camera. If I want good pictures I will just use my DSLR for quick pics though the nexus works fine for me.
Currently running shiny rom 1/4/14 and she is running smooth with an uptime of 75 hours however I can't wait for Liquidsmooth to get the bugs worked out.
It's not that I'm trying to take professional quality pictures, but the quality is really poor. I use the Wellsfargo banking app to mobile deposit checks, and it wont work with my Nexus. The pictures are too "out of focus". I'll try the tap-hold-and let go tip though. Sounds like it may be useful in my situation.
And don't get me wrong, I really like my Note 3, but there's just something about the Galaxy Nexus that makes me keep coming back.
Sent from my SM-N900T using Tapatalk
I feel the same way I tried a RAZR maxx HD galaxy s3 and 4 iPhone and blackberry 9930. I love my nexus the best even though the antenna has been the worse off all those phones. I can confirm because I have had 3 nexus...unless I just have really bad luck

So I've been trying to figure this out, but I don't understand- hold what to focus? I tried holding on the screen but it just brings up camera settings, then I tried holding the action button and nothing happens at all. If I tap the screen it will focus but when I let go it doesn't take the picture. Maybe I just misunderstood...

When you pointing your camera on a item Tue middle circle that pops up is what the camera is going to focus on hold of he blue button down until the circle turns green when it does that its focused let go and it will take a foucuse pic(only if the phone is still)
Also if you tap and hold on the screen in different areas those will become your new 'focus' area once its set do the same thing over again withe the blue button and it will focus on the new area
Hope this helps
I had the camera set to "continuous picture". When I switched it to "auto" it works. I'm going to try this out for a while and if it improves the quality I might just hold on to this phone until the next generation.

I use the Wellsfargo banking app to mobile deposit checks, and it wont work with my Nexus. The pictures are too "out of focus". I'll try the tap-hold-and let go tip though.

I use a similar function with my bank app without issue. Do you have enough ambient lightning?
I don't think there's much you can do drastically improve the image quality. You could get around the the quality of the sensor on stationary scenes with bracketing techniques. I keep looking for apps make use of bracketing but It seems post editing on the PC is the only viable option ATM. Here's one interesting technique: http://jtrujillo.net/qpix/

This literally might be one of the worst smartphone cameras i have ever had. Does anyone agree? I feel tricked. I might sell this phone and get the z4v. The lack of enthusiasm here even shows little promise to me that this phone is even slightly future proof.

I agree. My Samsung gs4 camera ridiculously beats this phone by a lot.

Is it special enough to compete with the S6E or LG G4? Or dare I say iPhone?

Not much improvement after the firmware update either. It really is garbage for trying to focus and just overall quality in general. Not a deal breaker for me but just disappointing.

The best thing about firmware update is the battery doesn't overheat nearly as much. As for camera... It's still eh in my book.

It is very close to being a deal breaker to me. I am considering other options.

I dumped HTC for a gs4 when it came out and while I loved the camera on the s4, everything else sucked. Touchwiz is slow and bloated, even when rooted, tweaked, debloated, etc. Even an Intel i7 couldn't make touchwiz fast. I quickly realized camera wasn't that big of a deal. Nothing that I've had to date has beaten the camera of my HTC rezound. I wish I would've kept it to use just as a camera. As for this one, like the m8 it takes some playing around with the settings to get optimal results. It's a pain sometimes, yes, I'd like to just pull out my phone and snap a quick quality pic but I can live with it. This camera wins some and loses some battles vs iPhone and Samsung. Bottom line. Is this camera great? No. Is it as bad as the bashers make it seem? No. It's somewhere in the middle. I haven't played with it after updating to 5.1 yet but I'm sure it didn't get worse.

I am sure the stock software experience on the Z4v would be better than the stock experience on the m9. I cant ship it out to get s-off so that may be my next route. I hope the software exploit beats me to it because I bave a special place in my heart for HTC

So do I. I'm hoping they come up with something good for the m10. They need to change it up a bit. Dump the 8 core, up the speaker volume, focus on the rear camera quality instead of MP. I'd like a note equivalent option as well.

Well it's way better than my m8 ..so that's a plus. Not really a camera guy, usually is the wife that goes crazy with pics.
I hope someone who is about to load one of the 5.1 ROMs will take some controlled environment photos before and after. It would be good to see an objective test.

I would have if I saw this sooner. Already on 5.1 though.

its a phone first, camera is just an added bonus, problem is people expect to use thier phone to replace thier camera. THIS WILL NEVER HAPPEN! you ever try to blow up a cellphone picture.,....I dont care what brand it is, it will be pixelated.
I work in the personalization industry, and youd be suprised by the amount of poor quality photos people expect us to print on a canvas or tshirt(most of them iphone pics too), then get mad when they see the quality.....stop sending us cell phone pics..... Its sad the most people care about storage space, internet and camera, more than they do about the phone actually functioning as a phone...reception....who needs that anyway!
anyway yea the camera isnt the greatest, but sure beats my moto razr hd that couldnt even make phone calls without randomly reseting, or my samsung galaxy s5 that chugged along and recognized my finger inputs 5 minutes later....

I agree. But if your phone camera is so below par that it might as well be 2 years old thats not right.

I 100% agree with that, i do buy a phone for a good camera, as i take alot of random pictures. With the 5.1 update, that camera has been fixed IMMENSELY.... Im not saying it went from crap to great (my wife's S6 destroys this thing), but it is tolerable now. I think the camera can be made better still with software improvements, but at least it is on the right track.

I recently got s-off thanks to @dottat, amazing job btw, and the 5.1 update is hugeee makes it almost a nonfactor to me how bad it is. I dont need dslr camera but GS6 and iPhone6/6+ are still miles ahead.

The Panasonic CM1 is enough to replace a camera. Perhaps not a full frame but it's good enough! It just needs OIS :/ (and a lower price).
It would be really great if someone would take and post some controlled pictures before and after getting the 5.1 upgrade.
