[Q] Reflashing to Stock on Incredible with occassional boot loop?

A colleague of mine has an incredible that every few days reboots into a continuous boot loop. It takes removing the battery for it to boot normally, and then a few days later it does it again.
He has tried a reset, and it doesn't fix the problem. This is an unhacked unrooted stock Incredible with what ever updates came from Verizon/HTC over the air.
I'm wondering if it would help to reflash it to virgin stock in case something is corrupted. In fact its also possible that one of the HTC updates caused the problems, since it seems to have started about the time of an update.
I have a Samsung phone and am familiar with the procedure for Samsung (Kies, Odin, etc) but don't know what to tell him about HTC.
What is the procedure for reflashing to stock, and perhaps selecting a stock version older than the latest for HTC phones?

You can reflash the phone to stock with what incredible users call an ruu (rom update utility), however flashing older versions or downgrading the os is not allowed with s-on (security on). His best bet in my opinion would be to root and s-off the phone, and then flash a custom rom. However if hes not into all of that he can try to do an ruu and see if it fixes things. Doing so will wipe the phone compleetly and he will loose all of his apps and data. A pc running windows xp or newer is required.
1. Download the ruu http://dinc.does-it.net/Stock_Image...0_Incredible_C_hboot_1.02.0000_4.08.605.2.exe, and place it somewhere on your pc.
2. Download and install HTC Sync http://dinc.does-it.net/HTC-Sync/3.0.5606/setup_3.0.5606.exe.
3. On the phone go to menu - settings - applications, uncheck fastboot if it is checked and then select development, and make sure usb debugging is checked.
4. Connect the phone to the pc with the usb cable, and wait for any drivers to install on the pc. The phone should be in charge only mode.
5. On the pc run the ruu file and follow the instructions it gives you.
If all goes well the phone will be like it just came from the factory. If doing all of this is to technical for him he can take it into a verizon store and they will do it for him at little or no charge.

Well not like it came from the factory originally. That would be Froyo, and this procedure would presumably get the last official (and maybe problem some Gingerbread). Is that right?
Also, I'm surprised to hear that a Verizon store could do a flash. My only experience is with T-mobile and they can't do any better than use the "factory reset" menu that just clears settings.

Well not like it originally came from the factory 2 years ago (with froyo), but if they were still selling them today or you get a replacement, that is how it would come from the factory. The last update 4.08.605.2 fixed all the major issues and shouldnt give any major trouble. The only other option would be to root.
Verizion is pretty good with customer service, you may have to find a knowledgable employee but they can do it for you.

We tried the "ruu" approach without success. The drivers installed on the PC, the phone goes into debug mode, and we can even run "adb" manually and talk to the phone. However, when either "ruu" or "Ht Sync" try to talk to the phone they just say the phone is not connected.
If we run the task manager on windows we can actually see "ruu" invoking "adb" and there is no long timeout. It appears that ruu just doesn't like the answers.
Again running adb manually for example with the shell option seems to do all you expect adb to do. This is with both the versions linked above and the updates they end up offering.
Any ideas?

OK, found a mistake. I didn't realize that to do the ruu flash I needed to turn off the phone and vol-down/power it into htboot mode.
With that done the update program sees the phone notices it has lastest firmware and offers to update it to the same version. I say yes, and the phone reboots and the PC tells me it will take 10 minutes to flash, then 2 seconds later tells me it succeeded and the phone reboots.
Obviously it did not flash anything. Am I missing something?
Also any pointers on how to flash an earlier stock rom (and where to find it)?

I was forced to encrypt my galaxy s3 in order to receive corporate emails on my phone using the stock email app. However I never imagined that encrypting the phone would literally lock the memory and options to customize the phone.
I tried to root the phone to benefit from more flexibility and also debloat the phone. However during the rooting process, I could not mount /emmc/ when using ClockWorkRecovery in the startup menu. Based on what I found on the web, I figured it was due to the encryption.
I then tried to factory reset the phone to get rid of the encryption but I simply can't hard reset the phone from the OS or the startup menu. When doing the reset from the startup menu, the errors are "Can't mount /sdcard/". The reset continues but when the phone reboots, all my applications and personal data are there and the phone is still encrypted.
I read a lot about flashing a custom recovery via flashboot or ADB but I am reluctant to do it without guidance from the experts (you guys).
I deleted my corporate email account (It is my personal phone, I am not required to install exchange on it).
I tried to use an external sd card but as soon as the phone recoginizes it, I have to encrypt the card as well as a result from the corporate policies. I ejected the card and did not encrypt it.

2) Decrypt the phone is not possible apparently,only way is to factory restore the phone apparently
3) I went to the AT&T store and they were unable to factory restore (using the standard methods). They offered an exchange but since I purchase over the phone at a discounted price, I have to do the exchange using that method. Before shipping back the phone, I was wondering if I could fix it myself with the help of knowledgeable people.

I have never used the encryption but if the phone can turn on and is usable, cant you go into the encryption settings and turn encryption off? then you should be able to do anything (may be best to start with a factory restore first just so you have a fresh slate to work with)

Had EXACTLY the same thing happen to me. Encrypted my S3 in order to access work exchange server. Tried CWM but cannot mount /emmc/ problem after booting into recovery. Have not tried to factory reset yet as I am wanting to learn more before I go that route. But basically I am in the same boat as you. The only difference is I was not required to encrypt an external SD card when I put it in my phone. Read about flashboot as well...maybe the only way to actually factory reset after encryption??
Sorry I cannot offer any solutions at the moment...but I will keep scouring the forums looking for a way.
If I learn something valuable, I will try to post it here to help ya out.

I'm in the same boat here - had to encrypt my GS3 in order to receive corporate (Exchange Server) emails. Now can't update the OS on the phone which is more important to me than receiving corporate emails on the device.
Can someone tell me how to decrypt (UN-encrypt) the phone? Everything I've read says that a factory reset won't do it.
Please help!

Has anyone tried this? If so, did it work?

I clicked install rom from sd card in cwm selected f/w which i had copied into internal memory. Did factory reset in recovery.

Odin it back to stock.

This might be too late to help you guys, but here's what worked for me. I odined it back to stock. Then I went into recovery (volume down, power and home button) and selected wipe data/factory reset. This does of course erase all your data, so try to copy whatever you can onto a computer or something before doing this. You should end up with an unencrypted storage.

After you hit start, unplug then replug the usb from the computer. I had some issues with it not recognizing it either to flash stock, but when i messed with the cord, it made the noise that i unplugged and it started working. Same thing with the root injected, only this time i fully unplugged it when the fiddling with it didnt work. Make sure you replace it into the same com port.
so, i seem to be having the same problem as all of you, only i encrypted to protect my data from agents. So, right now, i am *hopefully* :fingers-crossed: installing the root injected JB now. I had many issues. TWRP and CWM were no help, couldnt see phone to add new roms to it. ODIN was the only hope. I booted into recovery after going back to stock, did a new factory reset and am installing the stock with root. When i let it boot, it didnt go to encryption this time, but the first time i flashed the stock, it did. This is a mess to say the least.
EDIT: YEAH! done. No encryption and i got root. i used the image from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1968625 DLK3 worked for me. Good luck. i hope this helps. Ill be happy to explain more if you want.

ODIN (for me at least) wont see anything since im using Windows 8. On Windows 7, however, it works just fine.

Factory reset encrypted phone

I'm using CM11 as a rom.
I didn't want to reinstall stock rom, just to root it again later.
Installing updated version from external SD didn't work (updated the ROM but no decryption)
Tried to factory reset from recovery - didn't work, as the internal storage is encrypted it can't mount /sdcard/
however, from within settings menu, in backup&restore there's an option to do a factory reset - this is formatting internal memory altogether.

I understand this is very old but I am going to make a note here in case anyone else gets into this problem. When you go back to stock, do the factory reset using the STOCK recovery. Don't install TWRP or anything else until you have cleared the encryption. At least, that's what worked for me.

[Q] New OS update bricked my Fire. Any quick fixes?

My rooted KF got bricked by the new OS update that was released last night. It boots as normal, gets to the locker screen, and whether you unlock it or not, reboots about 15 seconds later to a screen showing the Android guy and an exclamation point in a yellow triangle. Then, if you start touching the screen, 4 buttons will show up on the side, up/down, select, and back... but they do nothing. Reboot again and it takes me to TWRP.
I know how to wipe my KF and reinstall everything, but I was hoping that someone might know of a fix for this. Especially because I just got a new computer and am still in the process of getting my normal apps installed, let alone Android SDKs that I use once in a blue moon. Plus, I have a few games that I would rather not lose my progress on.
BTW, I rooted my dad's KF the exact same way as mine and his just lost root access with the update, everything else is fine. Kinda weird.

What OS update? Your new computer will not need sdk. Also you will not escape having to wipe if something has gone amuck, unless you get lucky to be able to flash the prior system to revert the defect. You could just flash modaco http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1439916 no more losing root from OTA`S. You may also get lucky and be able to flash modaco if you`re on rooted stock or previously rooted stock 6.3.1 without wiping.

About 3am last night, I found my KF bricked after just using it about 30 minutes before (the wifi was on and it was hooked up to the charger). Today, I checked on my dad's KF and he has his wifi turned off. I turned it on and it instantly rebooted to just a "command line" screen saying that it was installing an update. Took about 10 minutes and then rebooted and worked fine, except that it was unrooted. I read somewhere in the Amazon Forums today that they did roll out an update and plan on spending 2 weeks doing it to keep from bogging down their network. Granted, their Software Update page doesn't say anything about it yet.
BTW, thanks for the other info, I'll have to check it out. Sounds like I'll have to wipe it (or at least restore from a 2-3 month old backup and see how the update goes again). But that's cool that I won't need to install the Android SDK.

Explains why some are instantly being unrooted or like in your case bricked strange thing is that it doesn`t change the system version it`s still 6.3.1 figures that Amazon would pull something like this.

Hey, I did manage to find a quick fix!
In the recovery mode, I decided to try using the Fix Permissions option. Still had the same problem.
I then just used the Clear Cache option and my KF was back up and running... and still rooted.
The only issue I have found so far is that I had to change the permission to allow changing the wallpaper, just uncheck the "write" permissions, (which was probably reset by the Fix Permissions option I ran). Other than that 2 second fix, everything is fine.
Granted, I'm waiting for Amazon to do an auto-check for some file that was in the cache that told it that it had installed the latest upgrade, and since I wiped that, it may install it again. If it does, I'll post it in this thread that my quick fix didn't work. But so far so good.

It turns out that my quick fix is only a temp fix.
Twice tonight I had to clear the cache again via the recovery menu. The first time it happened, I had just finished reading and hit the power button to put it in sleep mode, which caused it to instantly reboot and then do the same thing as I mentioned above. It boots up, and within 5 second of getting the locker screen, whether you unlock it or not, it starts shutting down and reboots ending up with the screen in the attached pic (those dots are just dust that appear super bright for some weird reason because you can't see them except in the pic).
So I cleared the cache again, everything was fine, and then about an hour later I found it sitting on that screen again. Clearing the cache fixed it again, but obvious this is a reoccurring problem.
Anyone have any ideas?
I'm reluctant to do a reinstall yet because I'm afraid I'll just end up with the same problem... along with none of my apps installed.

I have the same issue my temp solution is turn off wifi asap after lock-screen appear, wait abt 1-2 minutes then I can turn on wifi and use as normal.
Everything will fine for few hours. Any permanent solution plz? I remember that it occurred after i update something from Amazon app store, maybe : apps...

The permanent solution is to flash another rom preferably modaco if you want the stock experience. Full wipe, your apps can all be redownloaded that is the least of your worries at this point. probably a really good time to upgrade your bootloader and recovery if you haven`t flash both of these zips as zips in twrp if are behind the curve http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=30780737&postcount=180 and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1632375 only get them from where I`m directing you or use smirkit http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1500935.

1) Copy the update bin file to the /sdcard as update.zip
Download stock ROM : https://s3.amazonaws.com/kindle-fire-updates/update-kindle-6.3.1_D01E_4107920.bin
copy update-kindle-6.3.1_D01E_4107920.bin into Kindle Fire and re-name to update.zip
2) From the main menu of CWM, "Wipe cache from partion" to remove the existing files in the data and cache partitions
3) From the main menu of CWM, press the "Install update.zip" button to flash the stock software onto your device.

Wiping cache doesn`t remove data in twrp its factory reset that you need to concern yourself with and unfortunately there is data loss. You may have succeeded but others put themselves in a position of needing a factory cable after not properly wiping when flashing stock. This is because the data is what the kindle has a tough time handling after a complete stock flash. Flashing modaco is far safer, truth is that it will leave your recovery and bootloader intact providing a far better safety net if something were to go wrong. Also if you create a backup before you flash if something does go wrong at least you can restore a half crap backup, wipeout recovery and this is no longer possible just saying. I see far more people fail to flash stock than I ever do flashing modaco.

Considering the post in the Amazon Forums said this update was being pushed out over a 2 week period, I'm just going to keep my WiFi off (unless needed) and wait until everyone should have received the update and then see how it plays out. Considering it doesn't change the software version number, I'm thinking that this update may be just targeting rooted Fires. And BTW, it appears that the post was removed, because I can't find it again. Maybe they remove any that mention rooting? I just stumbled upon it via a Google search... 99% of the question in their forum are just idiotic.
Directv used to pull this stunt all the time to bust people with hacked cards that allowed them to get all their channels for free (usually a few hours before some big PPV event). They finally completely stopped the ability to hack cards by rolling out parts of their code over a long period of time, a year or so. When the final piece was put in place, the previous parts of their code had already been integrated into the hacked card software, because it appeared safe, and along with upgrading the type of cards they used during that same period of time, pretty much eliminated the ability to cheat Directv. I'm not saying that Amazon is going to those lengths to stop people from rooting their KFs,.. but who knows? It may be costing them too much with people bricking their KFs by trying to root them. Plus, they may also be losing revenue by people getting their free apps (with ads) from the Playstore instead of Amazon. And considering they pretty much sell their Fires for cost, they definitely rely on revenue generated by buying and using things via a stock KF.
BTW, this whole issue had almost perfect timing... I was planning on wiping my KF because it definitely is slower than when I first got it (which was day 1 of its release). I've read that Gingerbread doesn't clean up after itself too well, especially not as good as ICS (kinda like a Windows registry just gets filled with junk over time, and no cleaner beats a fresh install). It also appears that the ICS roms are actually working reliably these days, compared to the last time I checked. So, in a couple weeks, I'll get to have some fun. I am a Windows/Cisco System Engineer, so this kinda stuff is fun for me.

It seems that Amazon did do a incremental update on the Original Kindle Fire version
6.3.1_user_4107720, April 30 build to 6.3.1_user_4107920, November 27 build.
I looked thru the update and the only things I found changed are to do with the
Wifi driver, launcher icons, boot animation, and boot.img; attached the changed file below.
I have not tried to update mine, will attempt this weekend.

Thank you Tera Tike for the info at least this confirms that it's not just a fluke users of rooted stock should be warned appreciate your research. I do wonder why they would change boot animation and IMG seems a bit haneous.

It seems they increased the resolution of the images in the file, but for me I can not see the difference.
For me I wonder what they changed in the WiFi driver file, tiap_drv.ko.

I took Thepooch's advice and installed MoDaCo rom on my KF. It was a snap. I had FireFireFire installed with TWRP. Just downloaded MoDaCo to PC copied to KF. Rebooted to FireFireFire Installed with Install Zip utility. Took a few minutes. Rebooted didn't loose any data , apps or functionality. Its still rooted. THANKS!

[Q] Help - OTA JB Update today broke my phone

I have CID__001 in the UK and received the JB update this morning - great, I've been waiting for it for months, that's why I didn't bother rooting my phone like i did with my desire.
So my phone boots up and EVERYTHING keeps crashing. com.android.phone, android.process.acore, gapps, htc sync etc. Constant error messages, so i can't get rid of them to do anything. The SIM card won't prepare, the home screens never load so I can't access my apps, the battery is draining like crazy, I can't sync my contacts because sync crashes, I called the phone from my landline, the landline phone rang, but the HOX didn't. I also can't access my files on the phone through the computer, the computer recognises it's there, but when i click on it it says 0 files. I don't have a backup, but if i have to lose them to get my phone working, so be it. It's completely messed up.
I have rebooted several times, also in safe mode, but it always happens. I also tried running the RUU because I now have HBOOT 1.36 but it told me it was the wrong RUU and wouldn't update.
I wanted to copy the update file onto the external storage and rename it update.zip so I could flash it from recovery, but i can't access the files through the phone or the computer so that was a bust.
I cleared the cache from the recovery menu, still no joy.
I haven't done a factory reset yet, because I don't want to lose everything and I don't think it would work if I get all the crashes in safe mode.
I need some help, I've got some experience rooting/flashing etc, I did it a lot on my desire, but I am stuck here. I'd like to be able to fix it myself, as all HTC will do is send me a refurbished phone, charge me for the pleasure and I'll lose my data anyway.
My bootloader is unlocked, but I never rooted or flashed anything on it, it was purely stock with an unlocked bootloader.
Any suggestions? I really don't know where to go from here. Typical that I didn't meddle with my phone so I could have the official update and it messes up my phone.

Have you got stock recovery or custom?

Could be you need a factory reset which is what i would do.

Yep, its gonna have to be a factory reset, if it still don't work contact HTC clearly a fault of theirs, cant see how unlocked bootloader can play a part..

Are you 100% its stock coz you can't clear cache from stock recovery... You need custom recovery.

Yes, my recovery is definitely stock. There aren't many options, but erase cache is one of them.
Factory reset worked. I have lost everything, had to reset from the fastboot screen (not sure what it's called) because it would not work from the phone settings - whatever was necessary to factory reset my phone kept crashing. Resetting from there also formatted my external storage, all my photos and music and everything are gone.
Really annoyed at HTC right now. I waited patiently for months, could have easily rooted and flashed a custom JB ROM but I waited and their update has caused me to lose everything.
Does anyone know why this would have happened or have heard of it happening to other people?
On the up-side...Jelly Bean is now rolling out in the UK!

probably there was a problem with some other apps on the phone, so maybie that wasn't htc fault. But wasn't mass storage working? If yes you could backup everything before doing factory reset.

My phone showed up under my computer, but when I tried to access it, it said 0 files...I tried. Failed, but tried.

Bootloop at green HTC Boot Animation after trying to restore TWRP

Hello,
sorry if this has been mentioned anywhere before, but I wasn't able to find something similar.
So I know why way around with my old Nexus 5 in things backing up the phone with Titanium or TWRP, but since it's wifi module died on me I switchted to the HTC 10, which is kinda intimidating to me when it comes to updating to new OS or backing up. With the NExus 5 it was a walk in the park for me.
First, I don't really understand the concept of S-On and S-Off. Don't know if this is related to my problem, just wanted to mention it.
My HTC 10 is rooted, bootloader unlocked, S-On and runs on 7.0 2.41.401.41.
TWRP is the latest available version.
Before I rooted the phone I made a backup of the stock system image etc like explained in one of those "how to root the htc 10" tutorials (no writing allowed).
To root I had to allow writing onto the system partition of course.
Now, I made an TWRP backup. I backed up everything that was available in TWRP. Userdata, cache, system etc.
Few weeks ago I ran into some problems (I though I did, turned out Google App is just weird) and wanted to restore my TWRP backup.
So I did. Went to TWRP and restored the backup from my SD card.
Got no error messages during the process, but when I wanted to boot up the phone the green HTC boot animation did its thing and then froze at the HTC logo, which would result in a bootloop after ~10 minutes of waiting.
Could force the phone to go into bootloader and from there into TWRP, but that's the best I could do.
Also removed SD and SIM card trays, but that didnt do anything.
Had to factory reset and then do a backup via Titanium backup, which is better than nothing but still a pain in the a** because some things just have to be set up manually, which took me quite a while. I honestly don't want do that again anytime soon
Does anyone have an idea what could went wrong or what I did wrong during the backing up and restoring process?
Except for that, I tried to understand how to update to an upcoming version of the OS when the phone is rooted with S-On and how I could keep my userdata? On the Nexus 5 I just manually installed everything via adb except userdata.img and only had to re-root the phone afterwards. I am afraid this isn't possible with the HTC 10, am I right?

The HTC 10 forces encryption and that has broken TWRP restore for me if I try to switch between ROMs. If I switch ROMs then I have to do a full wipe / format. The one time I tried to go back to my original OS I had a similar issue and I ended up flashing the full RUU to get back to stock.
The only time I am able to restore in TWRP is if I'm returning to the same ROM that I am currently running. Even then I usually just restore the data.
