I have lost Google as an option for the account type when creating new contacts. I can see all my Google contacts, but I am unable to edit them in any way. The edit button has disappeared from the screen where I'm viewing any of the contact cards.
My sync is turned on, and I made sure the People Details box was checked under the Google account settings / sync.
I have no idea what's causing this. I do have an exchange account for work, but that's been on my phone for a year.
Any ideas? Thanks!

Is the device stock or modified?

Stock... I never even got around to rooting it.

Ok, I fixed the problem. I had added a second Google account to the phone. Apparently that screwed up the phone's ability to edit/add any Google contact. I noticed under the 2nd Google account, there was no option to sync contacts. I just deleted that 2nd account, and all is well now.

Hi! Want to make sure my contacts are kept also in Google contacts identically by syncing. Auto sync option is enabled, in "people" view settings both google and phone selected. Have linked all my contacts to mirror entries in google contacts but still have to make changes on both phone and google separately/manually whenever needed. Also newly added contacts (to phone) are not replicated to google with syncing, besides can't see a way to create contact directly on google from my Desire (so I can do that manually like as "copy contact to sim"). Anyone who have suggestions, maybe a complete solution to make this fully automated?

I mean, it would be Ok if there were a such option also for copying to google, but no chance.

Linking makes two entries appear as one, but it will still be two separate entries and thus will not help you in syncing them. I do not know for existing contacts, but if you create a new contact you can select the contact type. This determines where it will be stored.
When you create a new contact it is prompted where you want to add it; google, phone or to sim. No multiple selections possible. However, you can first create a contact on phone then copy to sim afterwards whereas same is not possible to google contacts. Sync is not doing that either.
How to copy a phone contact into google contacts? That's the question.

In contacts, choose export to sdcard.
This will create a .vcf file on the sdcard.
Then log into gmail via the internet (not on phone).
You should then be able to load the .vcf file into gmail.
From then on, any changes should be replicated in your gmail account.

The easiest and most relaible way to sync contacts is by using MyPhoneExplorer which is free.
How do I delete all my backed up contacts on google servers?
I have multiple entries for several of my contacts but I'd rather not have any of them as I have all my contacts saved to sim.

You'd probably be better going on the computer and them then signing in at Gmail.com and pressing contacts as from there you can "select all" then simply press delete

At your own risk:
Multiple entries might come from having contacts at google and stored on SIM --> both are displayed.
If you don't want to have your contacts on google servers, go to settings -> accounts and sync --> tick you google acc --> uncheck contact sync
Then log into your google account via web browser (https://mail.google.com/) and delete your contacts.
But make sure, that you have backed then up on your SIM.
This should do it for you.
Try using the merge contact option in People....might be of some help

No, I have my sim contacts that I want, then have 3/4 multiple contacts for the same person, all from Google backups I'm guessing.

Ok, I've deleted all google contact backups - but still have some duplicates, I believe the rest are because of Facebook.
Hmm.

settings > accounts & sync click google and untick contacts.
Hi,
About 2 years ago I got my HTC Evo 4g and I'm looking for an upgrade soon. I recently rooted my phone with software version 2.3.5. I was wondering when Sprint would transfer my phone number and contacts to my new phone would their be any problems transferring my data. Thanks
All your contacts are synced top your Google account, they'll transfer when you sync your phone to your Google account..

As long as it's only User Apps you've installed and data for those apps, you can transfer with Titanium Backup using the dropbox or box sync function

Not necessarily...When you create a new contact you can create it in google or on the phone. If all your contacts are on the phone you can (and should even if you aren't switching phones) export them to a csv and them import them to google at contacts.google.com. I figured this out after having my phone for a year or so and ALL my contacts were on my phone. It's quick to transfer them and it's worthwhile to make sure you create new contacts in google in the future. Grab a new phone, log in to goog and you are done!
All right thanks for clearing up that information

Hi there
The thing is whenever I add a new phone number to my contacts list they don't show up there. When saving the contacts I choose to save them to my Google account. So if my phone dies or is stolen I can recover all my contacts. The thing is they're not appearing on my contact list. Even tough I've selected in contacts to show: All contacts.
The only way to find them (since universal search was removed) is to use the dial to type the name (most of the time without luck) or go to the call log (if I called that number before).
I've come to think the contact IS on the phone, Cuz it appears in the log with the name I've given it.
I have account sync on, I've turned the phone off and on. I have deleted the Google account and signed back in. Checked via the web on Contacts and all the new contacts are there.
I've been experiencing this problem on different phones (HTC Inspire 4G and now on a GS3).
If anyone can help, thanks!
PD: is very annoying to scroll through the call log to find a contact. And I call lots of people on my work. Is there a way to add the contacts to a folder on my home screen? After they appear on the contacts app first of course!

Hi..
Anyone know how I can get my Desire to support my google account? It seems to allow only [email protected] google accounts, but my account uses a non google email address...
Thanks...
I didn't know Google offered other domains, only Google.com and googlemail.com.
What is yours?

A lot of businesses and colleges use gmail but use it under another domain name. If you are talking about the phones gmail or calendar app you set it up as like normal under settings but enter the enter in entire email... like [email protected] that worked for me.

Hi...
Google doesn't offer other domains that I know of. My google account is via a non google email -- my pre-existing email address that I've had longer than Google has existed! Most android devices allow you to sign in to a google account with any email address. The Desire will only allow an [email protected] address.
I contacted HTC support and they said "open another account". Yeah, that's really useful, as my play.google apps won't be there (google won't merge 2 accounts) and my calendar won't sync (the Desire calendar won't see anything other than the primary account calendar).
So this renders much of the phone useless -- unless someone knows how to bypass this stupid HTC limitation....
Would installing a clean Rom, without the HTC additions solve it?

it was the same for me, now i can login with my hotmail adress and my gmail adress to the same account.
