Worth upgrading from galaxy s4? - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is is worth upgrading from galaxy s4? I've had it for almost 1.5 year and it makes me want to break it with a hammer sometimes. It also has extremaly poor battery life ( 2h SOT on wifi when I'm lucky ). Would you recommend me upgrading? The amount of RAM concerns me a bit, but I don't know...

Yes! You have only had the S4 for 1.5 years, but even then it was very outdated. If you had an S6, then it would be a questionable.
There is a thread about the RAM already, but Marshmallow does a good job with controlling items in memory.

This was worth the upgrade coming from my Galaxy S5. And I tried stock and custom ROMs with that.

S4 from a S3?

I have been stoked with my i9300 now for almost a year (Running custom OMEGA ROM 4.1.2) and am considering the new S4.
Of course it goes without saying that i fully intend on running a custom ROM on that too, but just wondering if i could hear from anyone that has recently gone from S3 to S4 and would like to share any tips or thoughts. In particular in relation to the custom ROM/rooting matter.
Cheers

I have had all the variants of the Galaxy S devices from the S1 to the S4.... I have ran just about every custom rom there is available for each of them.... I used the S3 the longest and was very impressed with the evolution of the devices...I have done about every mod you can do to the S3 and loved the style and the performance overall...Comparing it the the latest and greatest S4 I'm glad I upgraded.. The screen is amazing and once I started running CM 10.1 the speed and snappiness are a huge improvement over the S3... I have been running Cm 10.1 nightly's since I got mine in the mail and already I have fewer bugs than I ever did on the S3.... I normally don't run CM however roms are in short supply...I'm very impressed with the stability that CM offers already and would recommend it to anyone on the SGH-M919...To answer your question I would highly recommend you upgrade to the S4.....
P.S. The larger battery isn't just for show I get great battery life and I'm a heavy user!
s4 is bigger and faster than s3. nothing else, i think.
use 9300 almost one year
i also upgraded from the i9300, there is quite a bit of improvement -
1. screen is way better
2. camera way better
3. although I haven't tried every new feature yet, but I'm now using the air view feature quite often (the finger hovering)
X. temporarily cures my new-phonitis, prognosis is good for another year.
Lets just say that the S4 is definitely not worse than the S3, and nearly everything is a bit better, with an extra feature here or there. Take for example, the Camera app. It's much improved with more features - hands down it is probably the best camera app for a smartphone. The question is really if it's worth the upgrade. If you can manage to sell your old S3 to fund for the S4 (and don't have to add too much extra out-of-pocket), then why not upgrade? If you like the latest and greatest, trying out all the new features and hardware with custom ROMs and MODs, why not? If you are a regular consumer who's not into any of that stuff I just mention, then probably you should stick with the S3.
I've also gone S2 -> S3 -> S4. So far, I'm mixed on it. The screen is much nicer, and the additional Touchwiz features are useless since I disable them (lag) and they're only in stock apps which I rarely use. The main reason I can see to upgrade is the camera - it's FAR improved. But other than a nicer screen, maybe a little speed (not really noticeable if you have your S3 tweaked well) and the camera it's mostly the same. I got mine for free, but if I had paid significantly for it I'd have to admit to myself it was for the latest and greatest, but not for a particularly good reason. And I'm a huge early adopter.
Went from s3 to note 2 to s4 I think Im going back to the note 2...s4 is good but I've told my friends its not worth the extra money to upgrade to a s4..Honestly the screen is nice but it's not a huge jump from 720 to 1080, also I've gotten really bad battery life but then again I'm not running any roms or anything. Either way unless your due for a upgrade I dont think its worth the money going from the note 2 to s4 would cost me 300 extra I'd rather wait for a bigger jump.
As mentioned, if you're paying outright $629 for the phone it isn't worth it in my opinion unless $ is not an issue for you. The benifits obvious would be slightly better camera (s3 is already great), slightly bigger screen (you wont even notice), 1080p (not much different to me), quadcore (on custom roms and kernel, this may not matter as much), and LTE. Other features are just pluses but you may not use as much as you'd think. S4 IMO is a step up not a big jump from the s3.

Came from s3. The screen alone makes it worth the money imo. But check it out in person if you need to be sold!

I came from the S3 being as I suck with technology I just run the phones stock
so just going by stock I must say that the S4 is much better I just love the overall feel, look of the phone better screen, camera, faster
I got the gs3 initially as a phone I could keep for years and be good with, but now I am thinking the gs4 is that phone. 1080p screen won't be changing any time soon, I like the size, and it has lte. So I'm thinking of upgrading to the gs4, and then chilling with that for at least 4 years or more. I'm not a switch all the time type of person as long as what I have can take advantage of what's available.

I am just curious .... i was pretty sure the S4 has some cool built-in features (for example in the camera features) that none of the S3 4.2.2 ROM builds have seemed to have.
Or am i perhaps imagining this?
I'd do the S3
S3 is the choice
I did the same....
In April of this year I bought the s3 and in June I bought the s4... I no regrets or complaints on the s4... I'm always getting bugged by friends telling me are you getting s5 next week...

I actually have moved onto the S4 from the S3. The S3 was only about 6 months old before i decided to get the S4. Formerly loyal to iPhone until the iPhone 3. Later moved onto HTC variants and never really liked Samsung devices. After the death of my One S, by impulse, purchased an S3. Wonderful phone but the lag was noticeable. After using a S4, instantly fell in love with it. The display is just amazing, the design is a bit better (slight changes from S3, but feels better to hold). Snapdragon 600 (enough said). After switching to Apex launcher, all the transitions and animations were lag free and smooth. A month later with the S4, it still runs as if i just took it out of the box. We all know that the S3 had rather ugly accessories, but the new cases that are out for the S4 have better design aesthetics. I would totally recommend switching to the S4 is you're financially stable and have the desire to purchase a new device.
I have a question for S3 / S4 users.
When you access your RAM tab in Task Manager, how much memory are you generally using?
On my S3 i am almost always using around 700+ of my 828MB. Even when i clear the memory I am still using around 650MB or so.
Is this normal?
And i am keen to know how much memory the S4 users are using.
Cheers

Do think GN will get android 4.4 update?

As KitKat is coming,i'm affraid that google won't send the OTA to maguro...Nexus S is also just get three updates.
I think it will and that'll be the last. If not, at least we're rooted. Am I right?

Nexus S got three major updates. 4.2 and 4.3 aren't major since their all jelly bean. So I'm thinking it'll at least get 4.4 and maybe even the update that comes after that.

I hope so, because if 4.4 really is for less powerfull devices, it would be great.
Because I'm on official 4.3 and it just lag from time to time.

But still, the 'low resources' phones doesn't always get the updates...

Galaxy nexus will definitely will get 4.4. It will still receive updates since its still relatively fast in terms of processing speed compared to newer phones. I've tried my friends s4, note2 etc.. Its just a tad faster but not much. So I think we're on the good end of receiving future updates. That's why I love nexus devices

Without trying to sound obnoxious or anything but my brother got a note 2 very recently (first contract phone at 20 yr old) and compared to my gnex his felt much more fluid, even filled with touch**** bloat crap that came with it, I was actually quite impressed to tell the truth. Your phone must be literally bare bones or your mums maxxed out or faulty lol Gnex is getting old now and there's no denying it, il probably be replacing mine with the next nexus tbh when its out if the price is right if not than I'll get an n4
Yeah the GNex while I've loved it, it is getting a tad long in the tooth for me as well..stupid things like the screen sensitivity killing itself are getting very frustrating...I feel like an idiot repeatedly swiping my screen while my phone does nothing. Or how my battery randomly drains to zero overnight sometimes (thanks Samsung). The new Google Maps running like ass, phone gets laggy sometimes...I dunno just growing weary of this sort of crap, I don't even want a bleeding edge phone, just a reliable one.
Battery life an camera sucks on galaxy nexus an most new games an lwp ect lag like hell with gnex outdated hardware, its definitely showing its age as technology advances so quickly, you need a quadcore, 2gb ram, bigger battery, 1080p HD screen an 8 megapixel camera at least these days.
You need a 3960x, 32gb of ram and a 512gb SSD.
Have to admit that the gnex is laggy when you are left with 100+/- MB of ram left..
I would most likely jump on the next nexus next year May/June.

Depends on what is running.

I am pretty doubtful the Gnex will get 4.4. Let alone what comes after that. Don't Nexus phones only get 18 months of support? By the time 4.4 comes out it will have been well past that.
Yes ofc we'll get it :silly:

Coming from gnex..should I get a note 2

Guys as the title says I'm just curious if this is a good move or just side stepping. Checked one out today and like it but just wasn't sure due to the specs
Same display as my nex
720p
No sd800 or 3g ram
What unlike is the big batt, big screen, I see a good amount of ROMs, benchmark scores dbl my nex.
The n5 doesn't wow me and reading about the note 3 Knox scares me as possibly no development. The lg g2 interests me but not unlockable and want a little bigger screen.
So do you n2 owners feel it would be an upgrade from my nex?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
I'm probably a tad bit biased, but I would say "Absolutely"
It has/is going to have 4.3 support from samsung, so much third party development, and i am guessing it is fairly cheap now.
I never owned a GNex, however the GNote2 was a VERY worthy upgrade from my AT&T galaxy S 2. The screen is brilliant and they battery life is more than wonderful for me.
I'd say that you should watch many reviews on it, first impressions, etc. and maybe even see if a friend or coworker has one that you can hold and see if it fits your liking.
My only concern for you is whether or not you want to be on the "bleeding edge" as the device is what, a year old now? by the time of your next upgrade (if you're on AT&T's 2 year plan) it will be three years old. You probably will still be getting CM and whatnot builds by the time this device is "obsolete" for you/your contract is up, however I cannot be sure about the official builds of Sammy touchwiz or whatnot.
So, all in all, yes I PERSONALLY would recommend this device (for people like myself) however not for everyone.
I had galaxy Nexus and also Note 2. I got to say coming from Nexus, you will definitely feel that Note 2 is much faster. The size and the weight of Note 2 is noticeably bigger and heavier. Though I think it is not as bothersome to me. I do wish the screen to be just a tad smaller so it is easier to carry. Overall, it's <good upgrade. Though with new devices on the market,it is hard to promise Note 2 will get much attention in term of development. If you always want to flash roms, Nexus is always the choice. Nexus 5 has a lot of good things and should last longer. Note 2 is prob only to be able to last 1 more yr. Knox is also coming to Note 2 sadly. Looks like Samsung is going to turn a lot of people away with Knox. IF you can go to a store to play with - Note 2 to see,t yon like the size and weight, it would prob. be the best option before you made the purchase

I checked it out at the store and did like it. I liked the size too. Knox from what I've read makes dev almost a non issue and if n2 gets it....the 4.3 update will b out soon .. Will Knox b in that update? Love my nexus but want something bigger. I feel now the nex is 2 devices back everyone will b on the n4 or n5 and the gnex will be gone soon. Only other option is the g2 although I wish the body itself was a bit bigger. The HTC one but its actually smaller than the nex

[Q] Do i get this phone?!

Hello guys, i know this is more of a question type thread, but i just need to know this. Should i get this phone? i can get it for free on a £21 a month contract, is it still very fast and snappy? also, is the screen good? i would appreciate your feedback! thank you!
No one can really answer that question for you.
However, imo its still fast, snappy and I love the screen. I thought I would get the note 3 but it hasn't done enough to woo me.
I might be tempted to look at the lg g2 if I had no phone. But I do so I won't.
I hope that helps in some way.

I'd say the Note 2 is worth getting if your budget doesn't allow for a newer, fancier handset. How long is the contract? If it's 24 months then you might want to look at a slightly newer one, or consider selling the Note 2 half-way into the contract. I got the Galaxy S2 on a 2 year contract 2 years ago (the contract ended yesterday - I'm finally free!), but unlocked it and sold it about 14 months into the contract and bought the Note 2 outright. The Note 2 has a nice size, a better than average screen and commendable internal hardware.

Thank you! It is a 24 month contract, I was considering the nexus 5 but it is the same as my nexus 7 in design and software, so I will most likely go for the note 2. Or, I could wait till the end of my current contract and get a better phone cheaper on upgrade because at the moment I am paying £90 to cancel my current contract. Is it still worth getting the note 2 when it runs out in June?

It depends on the price of the Note 2 vs the Nexus 5. It seems to me that the Nexus 5 would be a better value upgrade than the Note 2, because it is much newer and overall the hardware is better (1080p screen, 2.3 Ghz Krait CPU etc). Over here in Australia, the price of a brand new Nexus 5 is about the same as a second hand Note 2 so if I had a choice of either phone now, I'd pick the Nexus 5 over the Note 2.
I really think the GN2 is worth it... As far as price goes it is definitely cheaper than any of the new handsets out... As far as screen goes it is very well off when it comes to quality, yes it isn't premier in comparison but any noticeable difference is subtle at most... As far as battery life one could easily argue that the GN2 is still the best... As far as firmware upgrades (if you decide to go custom) the GN2 is about as good as it gets... Already have a flashable 4.4 thanks to OmniRom (although not stable enough to use as a daily driver it is worth mentioning to show the speed of development with the device)... As far as speed goes... There really isn't anything better than the quad core functionality of the GN2. Even though some device offer octo-core processors they really don't use more than 4 at any one time and so speeds are barely noticeable at best... Ultimately the GN2, IMO was a head of its time and still has at least 2 years of fully reliable, upgradable usage left

Agree with everything that Phx said.
I'm one year in to my 2 year contract with the Note 2 and it's the first phone I've ever owned that I haven't been desperate to sell mid-contract.
It's very very fast, zero lag, great screen and fantastic battery life. 4.3 OTA update is due very soon with 4.4 already in development so you should have no worries about updates.
The Note 2 was way ahead of its time. The only thing it lacks compares to recent handsets is 1080p resolution, but on a phone screen the difference is barely noticeable.
Thank you guys, this has really helped, I have decided to wait until June and then get the GN2 then, i think it will probably be cheaper then anyway, also, what does IMO mean?
p.s I used my friends note 2 that he just got and it is very speedy and the screen looks very good. I am coming from a samsung galaxy ace, so anything would be better!

IMO = In My Opinion... I would also keep an eye out for Black Friday/Holiday sales (Xmas and New Years) as you might get a better deal during those time frames... Also check consistently as I was able to nab 3 Nexus 4s for 50 bucks a pop in March (online only) ---
---will add that though the Note 2 will always seem bulky to your peers... After 2 weeks you really grow accustomed to its size and will look at almost every other phone as tiny and hardly usable

Coming from a Galaxy Ace, the Note 2 would be a great upgrade. Personally, I've grown to prefer AOSP over Touchwiz - maybe that's why I'd prefer the Nexus 5 over the Note 2. But that's if I didn't have either phone right now; I love the Note 2 on AOSP-based firmware. It beats the Nexus 5 just with its expandable storage alone!
As you like aosp it is worth mentioning the note 2 had a good selection of custom roms, aosp, aokp, stock and hybrid. Omni rom had just released an (almost) stable kit kat 4.4 rom. Thus offering a lot of what the nexus 5 offers

I'm using RootBox v4.2 (as seen in my signature) and I love the flashy window animations and scroll effects. It's still based on 4.2.2 though - because 4.3 uses TRIM, it needs a full wipe so I haven't really been bothered to look for another ROM.
Do you know any 4.3/4.4 ROMs that have rather fancy animations?

Upgrade or not

I know its all opinion, but would like some thoughts from people who may have switched to the S6. My cuurent phone is the S4 rooted running android 5.01. The phone has been excellent, no issues, excellent roms and great battery life. I am hesitant to upgrade to the S6 because of this. Looking to get some feedback from people who may have switched from the S4 to the S6 and would they do it again? Pros and cons?
I only upgraded because i finally broke my s4. Galaxy s4 was best phone I ever had so far. I would have kept it if i did not drop it finally almost 3 years later. The dev support for the s4 is dying out but not a whole lot for.the s6 just yet..
Only pros i think are faster data with sprint spark. (I had first s4) and better specs.
Cons you cant talk and use data, no external sd card (dumbest idea ever).
Im sure there are some more pros and cons what does everybody else think? If it were me, i would keep my s4 over the s6 anyday.
thanks for your opinion!
Honestly I miss my Note3 over the S6.
