[SOLVED] Marshmallow SD card write access - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I have tried a Cyanogenmod 13 on my M8 dual sim and it installed and run fine.
Well, until I tried to install my gps offline navigation apps.
Without full access to the sd card they will not install.
Is there any way enable write access?
Titanium Backup worked with a setting change and ES explorer also has access. But how?
Formatting to internal is not an option.
I am back to Lollipop for now.
Thanks.

Some navigation apps makes Problem with write access

Er? Isn't that what I said? So what's the solution then?

Write privileges need to be granted on a per-app bases now. Try going into Settings>Apps, finding the app in question, and go to Permissions, and see if you can toggle "on" the Storage toggle.

Hi, I would give that a try if I could get the app installed. Problem is that the app will not install as it say it cant find the sd card.
I may try installing via Titanium Backup then fixing after.
What I was really hoping for is a fix like "just let me give access to everything because its my phone"

This sounds like a problem with the app and its developer, more than anything. The app apparently hasn't been properly updated for the requirements of Marshmallow, a version that has been around for over 5 months; so the app developer has had ample time to do so.

Such a hack would be a bad from a security standpoint. The very point of app-by-app granting of permissions is to prevent rogue apps from accessing permissions and data that they aren't supposed to. Compartmentalization is a good thing.

I can see that for 'average Joe' but for me that should be my decision, thats why I would never use a locked non rooted phone.
Still looking for a fix. I am sure it will come soon.
Otherwise happy to stay on (unrestricted) lollipop for now.

Hi,
so the greatness of XDA does it again.
on Cyanogenmod 13 Marshmallow on my M8 dual sim
loaded ExtSD_Fix from twrp http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software/fix-extsd-fix-v1-0b-2016-01-18-t3296266
and also XInternalSD from Tasker from here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/modules/xposed-disablesignaturecheck-t2789267/
and full access and control of MY SDcard.
Not sure if I needed both of these but, hey, its all working fine now.

WOW, Nice!!! Is the process repeatable for other Devices? Also I notice that the ROM is version DOI2, it is compatible with more recent version like DOI6? Looking forward to more details.
I do hope this is true..any details as to how you've done this?
I saw titanium backup *fail* gaining root access twice, did *not* see busy box get root, there was a lot of shaking, I'm not sure what I saw, if anything..... you can install all those apps and not get root.
As far as I'm concerned, move along, nothing to see here. Until something more definitive is shown.

Very happy with the mm beta. Phone is much faster. There are nice improvements in pen and other things. I like approving or blocking app access to contacts and other information. That's my biggest plus . Battery seems about the same, but sleep battery usage is much better. People will like the update.
I'm also running "good lock" which provides Samsung touch wiz improvements. Highly recommended

External card is not necessary, but makes life so much easier than installing something on your computer and using a command line interface to force the update. Directions for both are mentioned in the thread. If I've helped remember to hit thanks.

I seen this post than I laughed and watch the video, but you are right they are trying to get credit when all they did was use kingroot and Super SU-Me. Which is why titanium backup failed.
Tho if you really think about it the only reason why you have Super SU-Me app is to remove kingroot to install Super SU. That is how you know this is fake.

This. Also, I can do a "rooted" video, too with temp root. Reboot and show me something then I'll be interested.

Does the temp root even work anymore? Last I heard an update a few months ago made Kingroot stop working. Also Kingroot seems to have gotten harder to remove.
Removed link and closing thread. Move along please.

urgent help needed

I have a htc one M8 i recenly decided to unroot it but upon doing it i have lost my internal storage and going into file manager it says there are no files and apps cannot be installed from the app store. can anybody help??? if so what do I do???
What are the exact steps you did in trying to unroot?
You can try booting into TWRP, go to Wipe section, and pick the button that says Format Data. This usually fixes internal storage corruption issue, which sounds like you are experiencing.
i used supersu, i was told that upon using the full unroot feature my phone would be fine and unrooted but guess this is not the case

You're probably getting the error messages, since the apps need internal storage, which is now inaccessible. I've already suggested how to fix the internal storage.
If you want to remove SuperSU, you'll have to do more. But it depends on how far you want to go. Also depends on why you want to unroot.

You can restore a stock TWRP backup for your M8 version from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/help/tutorial-how-to-stock-stock-twrp-t3086860
This should remove any traces of root, and make your Pokemons work again.

Android q beta 2

Anyone running Android Q beta 2 ? Can you make a comparison to Pie in terms of speed or apps that crash or hang? TIA
I have no apps crashing and no apps unable to start. Performance and battery are identical to Pie.
The Android Q is definitely a daily driver for me.
EDIT: The only single issue I have is that double-tap or lift to wake are not working.

not work on Beta 2, bro
How best to backout of the AndroidQ beta2?
Installed but Android Auto is playing up so want to go back to v8
Can't mount system partition R/W on Marlin using TWRP 3.2.3-1 once updated to AQB2 (although I did a dirty update by removing the -w erase flag from the bat file before executing.) Guess I'll try nuking everything and rebuilding from scratch to see if the partitions will mount R/W to install Magisk...
Is anyone able to set his own mp3 ringtone on this?

As you can see in this screenshot, it's working just fine. You have to install the latest Magisk canary build. TWRP won't work to do some backups, but you can flash it fine.
Been running Q2 for a few days and is a great daily driver. As soon as Nova paid was installed I have no complaints
and battery life has been excellent. Coming from the Essential phone rooted this has been a pleasant surprise. For 180.00 new
unlocked on Sprint this is a good deal. I also prefer the 16x9 screen and camera.
So, I have some weirdness going on…
I screwed up and tried to install the last P build after getting the ota beta Q update….i had issues (possibly of my own making).
Realized that trying to go back wasn’t going to work so I thought I would just reinstall the Q beta version 2, I downloaded it…all seemed well until I wanted to get to “settings”
I can pull the “curtain’ down and see a few quick access icons (wifi, Bluetooth, airplane mode…) but it won’t pull farther down (second swipe) to see other options and the “settings” gear at the top. I also don’t seem to be getting notifications, I hear them but don’t see an icon.
I also can’t get to the setting that allow me to transfer files.
Any ideas?
Edit: also can't get to my app drawer...
Edit 2: home button doesn't work either...
I got it, it must have been a bad "dirty flash", did a clean install, and all is working as expected...except,
I've got root but can't see my internal storage with ES file explorer (I can see it when using my PC) (or any other root explorer) and can't edit my build.prop (can't save it)

I did a clean flash, and had the same issue with the internal storage. It was weird though because chrome couldnt see it either, and kept failing to get permission to store files. Doing another Wipe now to try and resolve it...

Wasn't talking about hotspot specifically.... The issue with Chrome is still there, still not able to download anything, as it pops up that it needs permission, I hit continue...and nothing. It normally gives the permission request notification here, but it does not.

Right, I don't think I've tried to download anything with chrome, I want the permissions so I can edit the buildprop file.
Having just checked, I also cannot download anything using chrome, Opera doesn't seem to have a problem, though. I didn't check any other browsers

After clean flash, still having the same issue with the downloads. Going to Solidexplorer shows that the sdcard partition never created a Download folder. Chrome also is completely not working now, so definitely rolling back until it's resolved.

pop-up permission window and root-banking app issue

Hi.
Recently I unlocked and rooted my G4. There were some problems with him, so I installed a theoretical clean soft from *.zip by TWRP (there was no capture+ and quick memo as in the original).
The problem is that when you run an application or browser when pops pop up, I'm not able to click "allow / refuse",
because the application does not react to it!
While in the application is okay and I can get out of it and do it in the app options then in the browser, when the page shows some pop up windows it becomes impossible or terribly annoying.
Another thing is that I can not run the banking application, even though Magisk hides the root.
Is there a way to get around this?
In summary, I have a problem with non-responsive popup windows and root to the banking application for now ..
Regards and I count on your help
Wipe everything. Go to advanced in wipe do not check off microsd and internal storage
Reinstall ROM gapps and SuperSU or migisk
This way u can have a clean and install and not loose your files
I have tried this and it didnt work for me :/
What about banking app?

First and most important: without an info what you flashed you can't expect much help. Is it stock? Is it a custom ROM ? Which one ? What version ? Did you tried a clean install ? This popup window problem sound 99% like an issue with your data partition so do this:
wipe -> FORMAT DATA!! (you will loose all your internal media obviously .. So make a backup of your photos etc before )
wipe -> advanced -> system and cache
Reboot -> recovery
Flash the ROM of your choice
Boot android
This must fix your popup issue. If not try another ROM .
Magisk hide doesn't work properly for me too. It's always a cat & mice game . I found another approach which even let my stubborn banking app load! Check it out : the app is named island : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.oasisfeng.island
It creates an island for your apps which are so much hidden that no root detect will work and so let your app load

@steadfasterX You are genius! Thx so much, my app now is working
I flash stock ROM v29a, but now its ok. The problem was Fluidng and "drawing over apps", I uninstalled that app and now pop up windows working well
@steadfasterX did you use a particular setting or method in the sandbox? My banking app still complains about root.

no but ensure the app is shown in the "island" tab and start the app from there.

Question Remove all trace of rooting

Hi folks,
Hope you are all fine !
I uninstalled Magisk but some apps still detect it's "rooted" which prevent them from opening. Would you have any ideas what cleaning I could do to avoid these apps to wrongly detect root ?
I'm running A13 stable TP1A.221005.02.
Thanks in advance !

My guess is that you still have the bootloader unlocked.
If you decide to re-lock the bootloader, it's gonna factory reset & wipe all data.

Thanks for the suggestion.
I didn't think app could verify this so easily.
I'd like as much as possible to not wipe the device, is there any way to confirm what triggered the app to find the "root" though it is not rooted any longer ? Any logs I could check perhaps ?
Thanks in advance -
One other thing is to remove the magisk app .apk if you downloaded it. Some programs do scan your files and if they see magisk in your files they deem you as "rooted".
Cheers,
B.D.

Before factory resetting, you could also try a dirty flash of the latest firmware.zip or using the official online Google Pixel Flash Tool.

It is not reading another apps data. It literally is scanning filenames. If you grant an app permission to read/write files, it can read any downloaded file to determine if it is magisk related.

I would be very suspicious of any app requesting such a permission, if it doesn't really need it.
Hi Folks,
Thanks everyone for your suggestions !
I removed all Magisk apps files, applications which needed root (though I'm not root, but was), and this fixed the issue here (I had in my hide list from nova an app called Root Explorer and I think the issue got resolved after I uninstalled it lol).
Have a great evening !
On a side note, moving to A13 ruined my great battery life, sadge.
I had poor battery on Sept A13 release. Oct A13 security release seemed to fix this.
Cheers,
B.D.
