Alright guys not trying to start another "I heard" thread but I read some upsetting news today.....it seems the community is going to begin to dwindle.....maybe not for us specifically but more for some of the newer phone models... I took some interest in the Droid bionic today and so I decided to go look at the thread for it.....under the general topic there was a discussion about Verizon beginning to crack down on root users. This is due mainly to the theft of services (WiFi tether). This crack down will mean Verizon completely locking down the bootloader and making phones unrootable. Theyre even going as far as to back this up with network locks. If your new device isn't verified on there network with an unrooted Rom, they will potentially lock down your service so you can't use your phone for anything essentially. Now as of right now it appears that they are focused mainly on new devices and they aren't so worried with us. I can completely understand why they would want to stop the theft of this service but at the same time this news comes as a bummer. How long will it be until Verizon locks down root altogether? And this isn't even just Verizon but rather a joint venture across multiple carriers. I don't know how to link but go look it up if youre interested guys. It's under Droid bionic general. I don't know how to take this information....but anyways let's get some input rolling here. What do you guys think about this? And better yet anyone think its gonna affect our devices at some point?

Hey man, I can honestly say that I think this is complete bull! Haha. Why would they take away the boot loader?? Thats aa main trouble shoot tool in its self, and if this does happen. I highly doubt that it would stop root. We would be able to get past it.

Read the thread....even if they do get around it there will be back ups that will kill service to any rooted device. Idk if this is true but its interesting

We have wayy too many smart devs to let this happen. I'm not worried
This is a rumor from ONE source. People have been getting all upset over this but until anything actually happens, it's just that. A rumor.
Besides, if Verizon is worried about people tethering for free, it would make more sense to charge for data on a tiered level like they're probably going to start doing anyway.
Wild rumors and speculation based on forum posts, which link back to other forum posts, which link to other forums.... which eventually circle back to one guy who doesn't provide any back-up for his claims.
The original panic started here:
http://www.mydroidworld.com/forums/...otloaders-rooting-manufacturers-carriers.html
Can we please restore some sanity to the community? Will people please stop panicking based on a bunch of "I heard..." and vague references to unnamed, unconfirmed sources?
Am I saying that this is impossible? No. But as intelligent adults, should we not demand a higher burden of proof than vague references to "multiple channels"? If there really are multiple channels that can confirm this vast conspiracy, why hasn't it broken as a reputable news story anywhere? One dude cracked the case, but no one else can corroborate it or cite anything?
This is claimed to be an effort to crack down on unauthorized tethering. If that is the goal, what seems more likely?
1. The claim that "Multiple carriers were working collaboratively on a program that would be able to identify rooted users and create a database of their meids."
or
2. Phone companies will just start phasing out unlimited data in favor of tiered plans
Given that we're already seeing #2 happen on some carriers, I'll put my money on that.
Of course, people love David and Goliath stories, so I doubt these rumors will ever die, just like the Placebo Throttle Remover will never die.
Yea, maybe all the phone companies have gotten together and are developing super secret methods of tracking us down. And maybe the Reverse Vampires are involved. And the Masons.
The original panic rumor claims that these things are already happening. For example:
"More than one major carrier besides Verizon has implemented this program and that all carriers involved had begun tracking rooted phones. All carriers involved were more than pleased with the accuracy of the program."
Sooooooo..... if it's already happening, there should be some evidence, right?
P.S. - I have heard from multiple sources that XDA is going to start tracking members by injecting code into any attachment that is placed on this forum. I've confirmed it through multiple channels. No, I can't be any more specific than that: I hope you understand. After all, this is top secret information... I can't just go tossing it around. It's a vast conspiracy, but they've managed to keep it completely bottled up.
Don't believe me!?!? Well, just wait until it happens to youuuuuuuu!!!!! (Scary music)
byrong, thank you!

Damn dude.....just trying to put some discussion into this topic. Ouch. I understand and preface this with not trying to start another I heard thread.....I wasn't trying to instill panic in anyone. No need to write up an essay and a half of flame. Simply giving some discussion topic.

I don't necesarilly believe it will happen but is it plausible? yes....You can't deny that major carriers and development teams have more knowledge, experience, and capability then ANY developer on xda. Look at the past. Apple actually brought out a lawsuit trying to keep people from jailbreaking devices. So while we may all sit around and laugh at the idea and while it is just a bunch of hear say at this point, it is definitely plausible. And i do agree that it may just be easier to do tiered data plans, but then that kind of screws over verizon's customers who actually pay for tether. So you can kind of understand why they wouldn't want to continue to move on that route. Both options are viable and neither of them appears to be any sort of threat right now. As stated above, right now it's just a bunch of threads linking back to other threads linking back to other threads. And I don't know how much there is to believe about it but none the less it definitely could happen.... But hopefully nothing will happen....I mean come on manufacturers hardly keep their devices up to date...2.3 has already been dropped on how many devices and we're still waiting for it. People are on to sense 3.0 and we still have 1.0 on our stock rom. If they decide to kill the independent dev community then they better start dropping crazy updates with extremely customizable roms. It just seems like too much work that would ultimately end in manufacturers and providers losing money. Sooo ya. probs not gonna happen
If people didnt abuse tether, it wouldnt be an issue. So much free wifi, i cant think of last time i tethered. I also actually pay for internet at hone, yet i know several who tether for home internet.

Verizon would be foolish to do this. People are attracted to their service due to the freedom of android...

It's not a flame, it's just the truth... There really is not a whole lot to be concerned about. It's out of our control so whatever happens happens, we'll have to deal with it when it shows up, IF it shows up. But why be so concerned about it?
Having said that, as far as rooting goes, they SHOULD embrace developers and allow us to use our roms and stuff legally... but I think that there is stuff set in writing and signatures that are still in effect for the time being. I see them never allowing us to root, but compromising by letting us set our own defaults and not having to use their proprietary carrier BS eventually. Whatever we make our phones into (right now) creates a market, and where there's a market there's money. We'll either have the perfect phone or the option to make the perfect phone, just like we can buy the perfect PC or make the perfect PC. Well, at least as far as software goes.
I personally believe we'll ultimately get what we want to the point where rooting is useless as far as ordinary everyday users go. But right now we don't know what this whole smartphone craze is or what its gonna be when it finally plateaus, and neither do the manufacturers & carriers so they can't exactly crack whips on our backs for doing all of this yet.
Besides, the hackers that make these roms make the phones better. They turn us into brand and carrier loyalists. The Optimus, Galaxy S, Xperia, HTC & Droids all have followings for different reasons, and the developers are the most rabid and loyal of them all. They might not NEED us, but we're still pretty freaking important.

Okay I'm going to be as nice as I can about this. It's not true. We've had so many threads about this the threads are starting to scare people. Please stop. I don't mean to be rude to you. There is not on piece of solid evidence and I've talked to soooo many people it's not even funny. Don't buy it.
I'm rooted and I have wireless tether. However, there are apps in the market (Easy Tether and PDANet, for example) that do the same thing as wireless tether, but use a USB cable and work on unrooted phones, so the argument that VZW is cracking down on rooted users due to wireless tether isn't valid. I use WT every now and then if I need to connect my laptop for work reasons when I am at a customers location. If VZW feels the need to lock my phone, well, it IS their network and they have that right. I rooted my phone to get rid of the software that was bogging my phone down.

And why not?
It is an extremely cynical move by two massive megacorp companies (both with troubled ethical histories) betting LOTS of money on people being brainless stupid herdable sheep. Instead of calling me cynical, you should feel a bit affronted at Google....because both these corps are saying very blatantly that they think we consumers are brainless programmable robots who will jump when asked.
Google and Nestle can claim no money was traded hands all they want...but there was quid pro quo, you can bet your entire lifetime earnings and savings there was.
I don't like eating chocolates now a days but Kit Kat is very relatable and very marketable.

Agree and disagree:
I disagree with you about the sheep analogy. We are not all sheep choosing flocks to follow. Sheep are herd animals and humans are pack animals (at least this used to be true). The iSheep represent the ever growing part of humanity that has made the transformation into herd animals. I, and many of us here, refuse to be transformed by media/advertizing/image consultants into a bleating wooly douchebag. The analogy for those like me would be that of the wolf; a pack animal who, whether alone or with his pack, will divide the herd and eventually bite and eat one of them.
I agree that it doesn't matter what branding Android 4.4 has...I've always referred to version anyway

Lol yea if apple went out of business I probably would smile. But I doubt it. Unless all android phone make you feel like your apart of a society than its not happening. The only manufacturer that makes you feel as though your part of a society like apple is Samsung. Which is why I like their phones. People see Iphone. And think upper class, sophistication, and belonging. Which gives them a sense of belonging to a group of elite. I mean who dont want to walk around feeling like their worth a million bucks with year old tech smh. We look at Samsung and see innovation, future, and a sense of belonging to a group of intellectual individuals even though on xda some people make me wonder with questions like whats rooting or a kernel, But they have a profile lol. Since Samsung set a stepping stone on what sales and devices should look like htc, lg and everyone else is really stepping it up. So apple may be in trouble in the future but as of right now. There to many zombies for them to sell to.... my bad for the essay

I personally don't want to see Apple go out of business. I like competition. I think it actually benefits us consumers.
Personally, I don't think Samsung is the bee's knees or anything, but they do make a few products I enjoy, such as the Galaxy Note series smartphone. My enjoy derives nothing from Apple's products. I like they're Android, are rootable with fair ease, have SD card slots, pullable batteries, and actually make the phablet one of the flagship phones, instead of an after though like many other companies.
I'm not an Apple fan. I don't know about the company now with CEO Cook, but under Jobs reign, they were able to make things people found useful and wanted. I don't think they really came up with many ideas that were original, but found the right delivery of it. Plus, since Apple tries to just make everything work, that's that many less people who's electronics I ultimately end up fixing; it gets irritating always fixing other people's crap because they don't have a clue.

Yea the competition is fun. I use to be an apple fan but I've always been more of a fan of customizations. When android came out I was torn because I mean you could customize a iphone 3g and 3gs at the time when jail broken. But android had launchers icons. Colors, mp3 ringtone makers. Rooting, and constantly adding more features. I actually waited for apples response. Now so many years later. Their finally responding with a more customizable ui its to late. Im done with them. Plus I saw people happy as **** that they could swipe their Iphone cross registers and pay for gas all with nfc enabled I laughed. Only because my S3 was doing that while the Iphone 4 was still on 3g like its 3g/s predecessor. Lol or my e4gt was rocking 4g wimax. It's kinda crazy though because in the tortoise and hare race. OK, I feel the need to publically rant about my nexus 7 (sorry, utterly useless topic)
I'm tired of acting as a beta tester when I buy consumer electronics. The problems with multitouch on my nexus 7 32gb were hiliarious for about 10 secs. I don't even want to try out the various bootloaders to try to fix it software-wize. This kind of problem should not have happened in the first place, AT ALL. How the hell do these products get quality checked before being sold, seriously ? Multitouch is THE main and basic feature of such devices, how on Earth can it not be perfect out of box ?
I was wondering by the way : has Apple ever had any problems with the multitouch on its phones ? I've actually rarely had any apple phones / tablets in my hand, but each single time, the touch response was way better than any android device out there. How come ? (please don't tell me : "ok f* off and go apple already", it's an open question, I'm curious).
Also, this tablet being my first experience in the tablet world, Google clearly hasn't made up its mind if it's to be considered as a tablet or as a biggish phone. Gmail, for one, in portrait looks as stupid as Tapatalk 4 with its massive side menu you can't ever swipe away. I want a damn TABLET experience.
So the nexus 7 is going back to the shop, and I'll wait for some other device, which may be a long time, as I cannot imagine buying anything else than nexus (Can't bare manufacturer devices that already aren't supported anymore after being on the market for >4months).
I sicked of being played around, and tired of all this nonsense. :/
Cheers. have a wonderful weekend. (and "Bon courage !" to all of you nexus7 users, I'm out)

What's your point ? Nexus devices are supposed to be an especially reliable plateform for Android app programmers, not a vast google beta program for it's own developers !! (I'm talking about the basic hardware features here, not advanced / beta features in google apps)

Seriously? They sold a bunch of devices and all "buyers" should be developers only? If I buy a device then the basic features must work. Nothing more nothing less, also if I am a developer the device must work.

I'd even say, a developer would require EXTRA STABLE hardware in order to program without having hardware bugs mixing with his own apps' bugs...
when you first discovered the issue did you try to return it? Have you read about the issue before purchasing it?
why not get an apple device, just curious.
I completely agree with you with all these problems with the Nexus 7, but for its price and speed compared to the iPad mini, I'll stick with my Nexus 7 since the problems are bearable for me.
While I agree with the OP in principle, almost everything in the computing industry is that way any more. There is such pressure to get new hardware/software out the door, that all vendors are putting stuff out before it is truly ready. I don't think Google is any more guilty of this than any other technology vendor. I've seen stuff a LOT more screwed up than the N7.
IMO there is an 80-90% chance most, if not all, of your touch issues can be resolved in 10 minutes using this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2428133
Of course you won't have the pleasure of ranting.
Your choice.
That is why I always wait at least a month before I buy something. That ways I can see if there is any problems with the first run. With the New Nexus 7 I new there was going to be issues with multi touch and I haven't had any problems with it yet. The only problem I have had so far is the keyboard sometimes freezes while I type. Not a big deal to me. No matter what electronic device you buy, there will always be something that will go wrong with it. I'm loving the New Nexus 7 so far. Just sad to see someone get discouraged over something that could be fixed by software. Enjoy your next tablet that you get.

How come ? Let's be honest here, you can always find a flaw in each phone/tablet out in the market. Everything comes down to your personal preference and your ability to accept certain flaws. Even ipads/iphones have their own set of issues. It may not be multi touch issues but there are some other issues.
Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.
/waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.
I dont have any issues. None that you describe. Then again, I'm not an end user. Which you sound like. Nothing wrong with that. But you bought something for power users and devs. Not Gramma's and Hippsters..
I change the things out with other things that give me issues or that I don't like and I have full control of the tablet. Something you'll harldy get elsewhere.
But thats not what you want. You want rock stable. So buy an Apple. (which has its own issues, But thats not where I am going) or a windows slate...Muahahahahahahahahahaha....Sorry, there really is no place to go that doesn't have some kind of issue. Maybe Buy a chalk board. Those haven't had many issues in like 100+ years.
I love how everyone has their own way of fighting with OP. He wasn't trying to engage a fight simply saying that the Nexus had too many problems for his liking. I was very very close to leaving as well myself. If there was any comparable alternative I would have been gone long ago.
Why do you guys make excuses for Google? Nexus is for developers only? LOL guess u think this site is developers only too. Sure, stuff happens when your factory is in China... But this is excessive..
There needs to be accountability and quick corrective action (Google has taken some action, but not enough yet.) if we sit here and accept whatever garbage is fed to us, we will always be fed garbage simply because they can.

Tell you what, PM a mod and ask them this question. I bet you find out real quick how wrong you are. This site is only for developers. Everyone else is allowed to post because they allow it. You must be newer. When I joined if you even posted a topic such as this you'd one get ignored or flammed into oblivion and two most likely warned or straight up banned.
You fail to realize that without the devs this site is just a....forum.
The name of the forum is; XDA (delevelopers).....
Really some of you ppl...

Xda developers, yes... How many people are developing for Xda? I guess we should all be banned. What kind of statement are u making did you even think before you post?
Yeah, maybe a mod thinks this site is only for developers... But I would like to see the reaction on the site owners face if you told him they have banned all non developers. Ad revenue instantly = 0
Historically the site was started for developers maybe but now I guarantee 90% of site content cannot be considered development. Unless you consider a million replies asking where to download Gapp zip for paranoid android development....
Stuff like the OP doesn't belong Development forum, but can you blame the guy for posting here? I went through 20 Nexus only to find out that it was a firmware issue. Google messed up royally...
Can't seem to find a good answer for this question in the T-Mobile specific section so I'm hoping that someone could help with this. I'd like to test out the fastest yet most stable version rom available for the S4 and compare it to the iPhone 5S and see what scores we can come up with. I've seen a comparison and surprised to find out that even though Apple reports the 5S is only about 35% or so faster than the 5, it still outscores the S4. Not sure how that could be considering how much quicker the S4 is than the iPhone 5.
I'd love to see the true potential of the S4 that doesn't include all the factory carrier crap that gets loaded onto the phones. One great example is how much quicker the Nexus 4 is when bought from Google rather than getting the T-Mobile version.
I'll admit, that Apple does make a smooth working product out of the box but when you've been at it for about 5 years, well you better well damn be! Android has been around for a shorter time yet look at how much they've accomplished and how much more customers they've gained than Apple has. Just love to see how people stand up for a device that's so insanely restrictive and just pure garbage if not modified. I can live with a stock Android S4, but I can't live with a stock iOS iPhone for even 1 day. Without a Jailbreak, it's just a tiny piece of junk.
My goal is to make a video for all the Apple fanboys and girls the true strength of devices like the S4 compared to the iPhone so they can finally shut their mouth. I love being able to use my phone pretty much like a computer. Customizing, downloading anything and everything, viewing any website I want and have flash work, the list goes on and on.
Read the rules. No rom comparisons. Rude to the developers. Not to mention its subjective to what 1 person may like and another doesnt

I totally understand. That's why I posted what I was looking for and not comparing things like what this rom might have or that one does. Just looking for fastest yet stable so I can get speed scores. Not sure if that qualifies as "comparing". Just my opinion, so please don't flame me but my outcome that I'm looking for is the fastest speed possible but something that won't crash while I'm using it. If you believe that's not a fair request then I'll delete my post so I am within the rules of the site.
These threads get closed for the reasons above, and many others. Users are expected to make this determination on their own, via independent testing and trial and error. Reading and learning from the many developers is also a plus.
"Fastest" is a subjective term and is based on a variety of factors in everyday scenarios.
Hi,
I always had android phones (galaxy's, notes & nexuses) but it always seemed like the iOS ecosystem was better, software wise.
From the outside it seems that they are getting better apps, faster updates (even to big apps) and of course they have the iMessage that all of my friends from the US uses and is a huge part of why I want to swich. (I'm from europe).
What do you guys think? Should I jump ship once and see how it is?
If thats what you want

I actually like many people used iPhones but here I am.
Do you really think on a board like XDA, in the Pixel XL forum you are going to get everybody telling you how great iPhone is?

Truly. This is an android enthusiast forum. If you want an iphone, go get one. Don't expect that recommendation from anyone here, though.
I think that there could be good points for both sides. it's no different then pixel vs any other flagship.
Yeah, no, it's very different. IOS vs Android, not Android vs Android. This being an android specific forum, you're not likely to find much in the way of love for the iphone 7 here.
I think it is always weird to have iOS vs android discussions in a specific phone's forum. That seems like a more general topic better discussed elsewhere.
This forum us for talking about this phone...

Lack of a back button is reason alone to stay on Android!
I know and understand your frustrations with Android. I've been an avid android fan since the OG Droid came out. What a phone and I loved it. Pure simple and open Motorola did a great job with that phone. Fragmentation ruined that phone and most every android phone since. The thing I hated apple for was the reason andtroid was so frustrating. To this day I get sick of looking at my wifes Iphone, it looks almost exactly the same as the original Iphone, if she puts wallpaper or a photo on her phone its just covered up by the icons that apple stick there and thats annoying to me anyway. Customizing your Iphone without jailbreaking lol... even the name lets you know how they feel about messing with their phone. Let's see Android is rooting Apple is jailbreaking even in a simple adjective they let you know don't touch fall in line with everyone and like it! I really domn't like the concept of Apple sorry, it's my phone I paid for it I should be able to do whatever I want as long as I'm not intruding on the rights of others and I'm sorry I do't see how customizing my phone would bother anyone. What they did and still do have right is they control the quality of the products in their app store and Andropid has dropped the ball on that one since the beginning. looking back they were trying for numbers not quality to compete and it has cost them. The quality of apps on the iphone is better and in saying that Android is catching up. These are basically the same apps written for different platforms. Ive seen it with my wifes phone for years I get so many more force closings amnd associated other problems than she does and I can hear her frustrations when using my phone. Like I said Android has been getting better and it's a heck of alot easier writing programs for one platform and one manufacturer. This is Androids problem each manufacturer has made alterations to Android AKA skins along with constant updates its tough on developers. The whole reason for Nexus was to give the developers a heads up and a chance to work with a pure version of android. I always loved the Nexus program and found that I personally had much fewer problems than my friends that had HTC, Samsung LG etc..... These manufacturers were never held accountable for upgrading on a timely fashion and neither were the providers aka verizon AT&T etc... this is why we are in the mess we are. I think and hope google has finally said enough! They have designed and engineered a top of the line flagship, one that is not outdated before the first box arrives. This phone is one people should be proud of it's fast and smooth its as close to pure android as possible oh I know Verizon put a few apps on it but they can be removed and give mne a break that's no big deal. It's a top quality phone that can stand up to the Iphone. Believe me if you know anyone that has drank the KoolAide and my wife has it certainly isn't going to change their minds and expecting that is not realistic. Google has given the developers a phone and a platform to work with and lets see how much of a difference this makes. I for one am hoping it makes as big a difference as Google thinks it will. I think incorporating with VR and home is swinging for the fences and I hope it's a home run.

I used an iPhone a number of years ago, jail broke it used Cydia the whole nine yards, once I started using Android devices I have NEVER looked back. In my position I get to try out different phones and some of the people at my company use iPhones. I have taken them home for weekend test drives just to see if I'm missing anything and after a day or so I find myself putting the SIM back in my current android device. I can't speak for you or what may be most important to you but for me I would not go back to ios.
yeah apple do a good job with software/hardware integration, but then it's to be expected with a heavily locked down device, it's the same reason they get updates first they are simpler to make stuff for.
but for me I've just always found Android way more flexible and I would rather have that flexibility. end of the day it all comes down to personal choice.
