Can't delete files from SD card on rooted Galaxy Tab S? - Galaxy Tab S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5 with root access. I have some files that I cannot delete from my SD card. When moving large video files, I'll often pull the SD card out, install it into my computer, and move the files that way, rather than through the USB cable, as the transfer is much faster. The files in question, that I cannot delete, are all files that were transferred this way. Why would these files be locked in this way?
I haven't checked yet, to see if I can put the SD card back into my computer and delete them from there. I'll check tomorrow to see if that works. If not, I'll have to format my SD card in order to get rid of the files. This seems pretty strange.
Has anyone else ever experienced anything like this or have any sort of explanation for it?
Thanks.

Which file manager are you using? Make sure the file permissions are set correctly and not read only.
Windows and Linux file permissions work differently. You'll probably find you need to set file permissions to allow the files to be written or executed.

I use ES File Explorer, but I've tried others. I never had this problem with my previous tablet. I never had to set anything to give myself write access. Also, I'm able to cut, copy, paste, delete other files from the card; just not these.

SD Card Problem in download folder

Hi,
for a few days, i have a problem with the download folder on my sdcard.
if i access the 'download' folder with a file-manager (like ASTRO or any other..),
i get a notification, that there is an error (i guess an access-error) with the sd-card. (and the filemanager shuts down after a few seconds)
In the 'download' folder there are some strange files, which i can not access, delete, rename etc..
some have the size of 0 k, some have a few MBs and some have a size of almost 500-600 MB.
i don't know where they come from and what they really do. also the filenames are pretty weird. (the names contain 'at'-sign ...).
if this error occurs and i open the camera, there is also a notification, that i cannot take any pictures due to an sdcard-error.
does anyone know what these files are? or what to do?
kind regards
Markus
If you hava a card-reader I would take the card out and delete the files with a PC.
A Card reader is not available. But if I connect my DHD via usb and access as a hard drive,I can see the files, but cannot access them. No read / write access.
What I haven't done yet, to copy all the files from my sdcard to my pc, format the sdcard from my pc and copy all the data back. (of course only the data which are accessable). Hopefully it will not harm my desire hd.
M.
If you use Linux you definitely can mount the SD-card and do what you want with the files there (you may have to become root) but it is acutally quite easy.
I just dit it on my DHD.
If you don't have Linux installed, just download an Ubuntu Live-CD, boot from it, plug in your DHD via usb, select "drive mode" (or whatever it is called) on the DHD, go to the directory where the card is now mounted, solve your DHD problem and you don't even leave a trace on you harddrive.

? about 4.2 sdcard structure deletion

Why is the sdcard listed in so many places. I know they are basically shortcuts to the sd because as of now I only have 2 gig free on my card and there is no room to copy/paste it or whatever.
When I look in root explorer i see /sdcard, /storage/emulated, /storage/sdcard0, and /data/media/0 all have my sd files in them.
My main problem is now quick pic sees double of everything, can I delete any of these mentioned above? I don't want to just "hide" them from quick pic, I want just one copy of each folder if possible.
I believe if you use a file explorer on the phone and not MTP, it's much quicker to just move the stuff you need to the root of the SD card and then delete the duplicates. I would wait for someone to verify that though before you proceed. Mine was doing something weird in TWRP. I tried to flash the stock 4.2 again in hopes any issues I had would be resolved. Didn't so I went to restore my CM10 data and it wasn't there. At all. I'm thinking to myself it somehow wiped everything. Nope. My files were there, but only when I flashed a fresh CM10 build. I don't know exactly what happened, but 4.2 has had some weird issues with recoveries, which were addressed for the most part.

[Q] How do i access files from Root Explorer on my Laptop?

Hey everyone @crpalmer tagged you in case you could help
I am running Jrummy's Root explorer on the phone searching for some pictures on Dropbox.
I FINALLY found them in the /Mnt/sdcard/Android/data/... but i can't figure out where to copy and paste these imgs to so that my computer can 'see' them.
When i plug the tablet into the computer all that comes up is Internal Storage with 9 GB available and inside that i have only bare files like Alarms Android etc. But NONE of the folders have any of the phones files.
Basically i can't see anything on my tablet through my computer.
I tried pasting the file on System/root but the computer still doesn't show it!
Regards
Silkmeister1
UPDATE: i managed to stick a TINY 1 mb sd i had laying around and that changes things to where my i could copy things to the sd card and the computer sees that, but now the issue is the .jpg won't open correctly as they are too large or corrupted
wondering if this is a permissions issue

[Q] Weird writing problem on rooted ND8 stock.

Recently rooted my phone thanks to these wonderful people at a place called xda-developers. You may have heard of them.
Anyway, I find that there's something weird going on with my phone, I can't write to the internal storage. External SD card works fine, Internal SD card does not. Only a few apps work.
The camera app will take and save photos, but using the camera within Kik Messenger gives m the error that the photo cannot be saved, I have to take photos with the camera app, then import them to Kik with the "choose photo" option, which will let me choose a photo through Gallery.
In another related issue, ES File Explorer will not create new folders. I'm in the main directory of the "internal" SD card, where things like Downloads and DCIM like to sit in. I cannot make a folder. If I go in with a Windows computer over USB I can make folders fine. ES File Explorer cannot even delete the folder. Says "New Folder cannot be deleted" Why is this? I can even rename the folder, but I still cannot delete this folder. Going into the properties it says I have full read and write access to the folder, I still cannot delete it.
In a third instance I have the GPS program Navfree. I cannot even run the program. Google Play installs it and it says it works, but when I go to actually open the program it gives me the error "Program cannot be installed, contact support" before quitting me back to the home screen. This program is special because it downloads and installs, but there are map files that it needs to download before it becomes useful. This is done within the app and I do not know where it tries to save to.
I think all of these problems are related and I have not seen any forum posting about it so far and I have been searching for a while. Google Play will still download and install apps like no problem and ES File Explorer will copy and move files around and will even rename New Folder to 'folder' but will not delete i
At first I suspected it to be the problem with KitKat and the debacle about writing to /external/ SD cards. But my problem extends to the internal storage as well. I have applied the fix to the 'permissions.xml' file by adding "WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE" I had to flash the fix in with recovery because I could not save the edited file I had typed up. Using one of the automated fixes in Google Play told me the action had already been completed. On the contrary, external storage works fine, I can write files and delete them and whatever I want to the external. The problem is with the internal card and it applies to everything I've tried except the camera.
So what is going on with my phone? I have root access but some apps will not work properly. It's just one headache after another. Here's hoping I won't notice the next one until I get another phone...
Eventually I just got fed up with the problem and re-applied the stock rom with Samsung Kies. Re-rooted and now the problem is no more. Thanks for thinking about me!

[Q] Can't Rename Copy or Write files to External SD card

Hi guys, my issue is that I've put a new sd card in 64Gb microSD. I've tried moving files across from internal to external and it just fails every time.
I've tried creating a folder separately on the external card, but once it's created I can't delete it, I can't rename it and I can't put any files in there. Can't even copy files into the sd card in general.
I did format the card on the phone itself. Also, now when I connect my device to the computer it doesn't even show up as a device in explorer.
All this seems to have happened after the 10g update.
Anyone know why this is happening or how to get around it, please? (This is happening with ES File Explorer)

If you're rooted there's an easy manual fix here:
http://www.droidviews.com/restore-write-capability-to-external-sd-card-on-kitkat-manually/
I don't think that you should have to root your phone just to change files on your SD card. I had a G2 and I had to take it back for warranty fixes two times and they had a big sign at the front of the LG warranty repair center, rooting your phone voids your warranty . I don't think that you should have to root your phone just to have write access to the files on your SD card but it looks like I will keep plugging my phone into my PC to keep changing them.
Moving Files works with the LG File Explorer that comes with the phone.
I've read its a problem created by Google, so a lot of the File Explorers do not work.
Not ideal, but the on board one does the job.
Cheers!

Thanks for the info HKPete, I had just used my favorite file manager and didn't think to try the one that came with the phone. I can copy, delete, rename, etc. all of the things that I want to do with the one that comes with the phone.

No worries,

You do. Unless you only use the limited stock file manager possibly.

Most of us root our phones for other reasons but I agree that it's a backward step from Google

It certainly is a backwards step by Google, what are they trying to achieve? The stock browser is ok for some tasks, but for batch work, batch moving files etc. it's very awkward to use the stock browser.
I hope they damn well put the access back in the next release.

Try using a file manager to move things around

I just bought an LG G3 which came with KK 4.3.x and upgraded to KK 4.4.2. I am using the LG File Explorer that comes with the phone to move music and pictures from internal storage to the SD card. After the upgrade to KK 4.4.2 it doesn't work using the same file manager. Pre-upgrade it worked just fine. Tried Delete, Move and Copy functions and none seem to work. Deleting a picture file only seems to work from the Gallery app.
I'm a little frustrated as it seems it should work even with the restrictions of KK 4.4.2 for SD cards since its the pre-installed file manager that came with the phone and other seem to have success with it AND using the Gallery app to delete works. I can read from the SD card fine (File Manager sees the files, played music in the standard music app, view photos fine) so I don't think its a bad card already. (I just bought the card too).
Any thoughts on why the default file manager won't copy/move/delete files on the SD?
Regards,
