Hello all. I just ordered a nexus 5x with the project fi pricing. I'm coming from a galaxy s6 which currently has a tethering hack and is basically unlimited.
Will tethering on the nexus 5x with a custom rom work the same?

Thanks.
Well, unlimited as in: whatever you're ready to pay for data...
Google does not care how you use your data: Tethered or not you pay the same per GB, no matter which device pulls the data. The way it should be if you ask me....

So I have wifi available at home and at work, and my wife owns a wifi hotspot. I dont need data for my phone.
Would one of net10's minutes only option work for the GNexus?

BUMP! There are like 1000000 posts a day going on right now about JB lol.
Anyone have any idea about the minutes?
Anything would work on an unlocked nexus

I talked w/ a Net-10 CSR and was told the same thing today. Shucks!
Prepaid plans with unlimited minutes, like the Straight Talk $45 plan, are an amazing deal and you still get data. You don't need to gimp yourself with a minute-only plan.

10$ a month....if you go over the minutes then it goes up to the next tier
Get the sim card and they give ya extra minutes too (instead of the free phone)
Is there a way to tether on a TMobile S3 without rooting the phone?
While the S3 is an awesome phone, not having tethering sucks. I travel alot and hate to pay for internet.
Please help. Would be used for an Vista Windows laptop and the Asus Transformer TF101 android tablet.
S3 has built in wifi hot spot, just pay t-mobile the tethering fee
why don't you want to root? It's pretty simple to do so, and the benefit is great.
Try foxfi some people say it works other say it doesn't.

Last i checked wifi tether with Foxfi was unsupported for our phones. However bluetooth tether worked perfect for me stock unrooted. And I gta ask same question as above, why not just root? You bought a Samsung. Now show it.
Try going to http://foxfi.com/bin and side loading it.
If you go to the play store and look at the Fox fi add on app the site is listed in the description.

As long as you have T-mobile 5GB or more plan and it is not their new unlimited plan that is coming out in a few weeks you have free hotspot.

The Android Preferred Data plan (5gb for $20) doesn't have hotspot included. Just fyI.

I have 5GB for $20 per month and tethering is included so no rooting required - I thought hotpot is included as well but I've never tested it as I don't need it.

ClockworkMod Tether (no root) (https://play.google.com/store/apps/...wsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5rb3VzaGlrZHV0dGEudGV0aGVyIl0.) worked for me. Note that this is USB cable tethering and you need to install a driver on the computer so it won't work on the tablet.

yeah, I use ClockworkMod also. Just make sure not use IE, but use Chrome with UA spoofer (android). When I try to use IE, i got redirected to tmo signup website.
Just tried FOXFI as evercleardoc suggested. It's not working. Maybe it's not compatible with Clcoworkmod?
WiFi Tether worked fine for me. I'm rooted; though.

Just got my EVO LTE, spent all day trying to root it for hotspot. Came across fox fi in the market and it works like a charm. The key is to go the play store and read the description. Tested it on netflix through my PS3. Was gone try BF3 but there was an update. So, I'm cool now til a new root method is found.

Sprint EVO? Which method did you use to root? I have the latest firmware on that phone but can't find a method that works
I have an unlocked galaxy nexus running Franco r364. I just bought a Samsung arm chrome book and it will see the nexus Wi-Fi hotspot but will not connect. It let me tether however for a while then blocked it. I have the unlimited data no tethering plan. Does anyone know how to bypass the tethering block or know how I can get the chromebook to connect to the Wi-Fi hotspot. I've researched and found tether bypasses such as clock work tether that work for PC or Mac but not chrome OS anyone experiencing the same issue or have found a solution. Thanks in advance.

Use the stock teethering feature in android.
T-mobile doesn't have software blocking your device because it's not T-mobile firmware but rather stock google.
you need to enable teethering on your device.
verify that your APN TYPE in your APN settings says "default, supl, dun, mms"
that should enable teethering on your stock device.

Wait... Huh? I can bypass T-Mobile's block? Can you elaborate on this more clearly? I had to orkbot (or something like that) and PDAnet just to barely tether. It's slow as hell (1 gbs). Please help!

I think he's trying to say that you should use the stock wireless tethering hotspot function instead of a third party app. Also to modify the APN with the parameters he provided
Just for the record 1gb(p)s is not slow at all...roughly 800mbps

I added the "dun," in and my computer is telling that it cannot connect to the network. Am I don't something wrong? That's with the Wi-Fi tether. I can connect with the USB tether, but I can't access the internet. I get a message from T-Mobile saying, "Turn your Smartphone into a Mobile Hotspot! Share your smartphone's high-speed internet connection […]." I can't move beyond this webpage, either. Ugh. This sucks. :-/

Forget that comment, I'm stupid.
Just connect to it via your wireless adapter.

Using stock adjusted APN and it connects but when u try to browse it directs u to T-Mobile. Anyway around this?

The way they catch you is by the UAString. On their side, it makes it look like a desktop is using your data and hence the reason you get blocked. Not too familiar with Chrome OS, but see if there are any add ons for chrome that will change the UA String( User Agent String)

Yeah, they're not having that this year. Lol. Which plan are you using? The $70 unlimited plan?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk II
I got a family plan with unlimited calls and text. I had 5gb data with hot spot but they recently came out with the uncapped unlimited data and igot it because I knew I was rooted and could still tether. Guess they caught on because as of Feb 1st it keeps redirecting to T-Mobile. I can still get away with it on my ps3 though that's about it.

I too have the $30 unlimited plan and I can tether just fine. You are using the stock tethering feature right? Have you tried changing the uastring?

Forums typically require a minimum number of characters (chars) before you can post. 10 characters used to be pretty common, so people would boost their character count by adding "10char" to their post. Looks like 2 characters is the minimum on xda...
I have this problem too, almost. I have the Sprint variant and I don't get redirected to a site on my Samsung ARM CB.
When on any Jellybean rom, my CB sees the built in hotspot from the gnex but says it can't connect to it. Works perfectly on cm9.1, although only when the hotspot is an open network. I honestly can't believe 2 Google devices won't work together.

Switching to an Android use agent works
Since I bought a Samsung Chromebook in July, I had no trouble using my T-Mobile $30 5GB plan to tether to it . . . until today.
I was unhappy until I switched user agents to an Android user agent. A couple (Android 4.0.2 for Galaxy Nexus & Chrome for Android Tablet) different user agents did the trick.
Hi there I am going to the UK and I have seen that there's a lot of no tethering allowed. Is this actually true or is there a way to tether my nexus net to the laptop?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
I tether all the time, never been caught or stopped. That's with O2, T-Mobile and Virgin.
I'm on O2 and tethering is included in all tarriffs and comes out of my data allowance. I started off with a £21 a month plan then added the 1GB data permanent bolt on. And if I'm nearing my limit I just pay a few quid for a one off 500mb bolt on. But it differs from network to network and plan to plan on whether its allowed and how much it will cost.

If you don‘t get caught in the beginning chances are you won‘t ever be unless ofcourse server side changes are brought.
They‘d charge you as I don‘t think they‘d risk loosing a customer by blocking his data.
Makes sense. Thanks

Does anyone know if the unlocked pixel 2 purchased from Google will check for a tethering subscription? I know that the Nexus 6p does not check and the Nexus 5x does check. The previous Pixel 1s checked as well.
I am on a grandfathered Verizon unlimited plan.
It does.
