So over the past few days, I've been noticing a weird bug with my Pixel C - it absolutely refuses to auto-rotate into landscape mode. It will happily rotate between both portrait orientations, but not landscape. Sometimes, if I rapidly twist it between portrait and landscape, it will successfully switch, but that only works about 20% of the time. I'm on the March security patch (MXC14G). It's completely stock. I've never unlocked the bootloader, rooted, or done any sort of modding/tweaking.
Has anyone else experienced this? Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.
No problem with rotation either with Android N nor MXC14G.

Yes. I installed the N preview and this began happening shortly afterwards. I changed the display setting to "Stay in current orientation" under "When device is rotated" so my Pixel C now stays in landscape mode.

I've done the same thing, but it's more of a band-aid fix than anything else. Admittedly, I keep the device in landscape most of the time during normal use (which is probably why I didn't notice it sooner). But now I can't ever take it into portrait mode because it's such a hassle to get it to return to landscape.
I'm hoping it's just a software bug and not something that would necessitate a warranty claim (broken accelerometer, gyroscope, etc).
Hmmm. I just assumed it was a software glitch, but you're right it could be hardware. Let me know if you pursue with Google and if they suggest RMAing your Pixel C. If we do have to return our Pixel Cs for this we should demand that they take them back as a return and allow us to buy new units with the 25% developer discount, hehe.
i hsve had similar issues with several of my previous phones/tablets and it lead me to purchase ultimate rotation. i've used this app on about 4 phones/tablets and it works well.
Hi. I just got my Google Pixel C today and it refuses to auto-rotate or stay in landscape mode. Is this a possible software or hardware error? What would the more technologically literate tell me to do? Should I contact Google? Any tips?

I've been having problems with my Nexus 7 (2013) for about a week now.
The problem consist of it not rotating between portrait and landscape mode, even though "auto-rotate" is enabled. This happens regardless of the application opened. However opening an application that forces the orientation will change it without issues, exiting the application then results in that setting being the new setting.
For instance, opening Google Play Books forces my tablet into portrait mode, then opening Chrome keeps this setting and I am unable to change it by rotating my device, then opening a video or similar in MX Player forces it into landscape and this setting will be kept until it is again forced into another orientation by some other app.
The weird part is that rebooting the device will result in the functionality being restored for random amounts of time. It is probably not random as there must be something that causes it, however I have been unable to determine the cause of it.
Is there anyway to see what "calls" are being made to change the rotation, or what is preventing these from executing?

Have the same problem. It comed and goes away for a while. And then again rotation not working (a few hours max in my case). Found several Google Discussion Group topics 4-6 months ago and it seems to happen a lot /sometimes on all Nexus devices. Even some Google developpers responded there. Facory resets or reflashing stock rom did not help. Most likely a firmware-problem otherwise rotation would never work
Untill firmware solution comes, I now use Rotation Control Pro for the time being. That is only few times a month. This app has free version too with less options (and maybe ads which are blocked on my device). Ultimate Rotation Contol is nicer app but it has only time trial and can not be switched off within app unlike Rotation Control Pro/Free.
You can look for other rotation control app. Then choose one still being updated. Most rotation apps haven' been updated for year(s) And the app must have option 'force' rotation to work when Android's own rotation control freezed.

I've looked around a bit and I probably stumbled upon the same thread you did. However I have yet to find a solution for it. I'm also curious to know if anyone else has been experiencing this problem, as that would suggest a real firmware/hardware problem.
You also mentioned that you only have this issue occasionally, like once or twice a month? I can hardly go a few hours after reboot until the issue occurs.
There are ways around it of course, but I am suspecting that my device might be defective on a hardware basis. In addition my left speaker has been starting to crackle a bit at certain frequencies... I might have to RMA this one.

I don't think a hardware error rotatating otherwise never rotation. But not 100% shure. And if speaker cracks certainly a good reason to RMA if you can not find solution for that.
I am planning to RMA my Nexus just before warranty expires. Little screen bleed next to volume buttons. Hopefully (but probably not) receive a brand new one after been using it for almost a year...
But 1st buy new bigger phone or extra tablet/convertable. Since this tablet can't live without. Using laptop these days often feels like punnishment.

Here's a thought. I would start with disabling XPosed Framework, and reboot. If that doesn't solve anything, then backup your rom (if you like), and perform a clean wipe, and also a clean flash. That way, anything installed to /system is removed as well. Install Chrome, and check the auto rotation. One by one, install other apps that might be the problem, and reboot in between them. While this will be time consuming, you need to know if your gyroscope went bad or not.
Side note: A factory reset (data wipe) through TWRP does NOT remove any apps/mods installed to the /system partition.
Hey XDA Community,
my Nexus 7 has a very strange bug which exists now for about half a year:
once I turn the screen to landscape and I quit an app, the screen gets locked to landscape mode - no matter which rom or android version I'm using! When I clean install a rom it takes about 1-2 weeks until the bug appears. The only temporary fix for this is cleaning ART cache/cache in recovery. Using a manual screen rotation app helps, but isn't very comfortable... I don't believe it's a hardware issue, because the rotation works as soon as I clean the cache or install another rom as I already mentioned.
Any ideas for fixing this would be highly appreciated! Thanks in advance! [emoji4]
Hello, actually the symptoms indicate a hardware issue. I posted earlier about it, please check it out.
I had a similar issue. A forced shutdown / reboot worked for me and fixed the issue.
When the tablet is on, press the power key until the tablet is powered off (forced poweroff), then turn it on again. Sensors should be back.

Well, correlation does not imply causation and here is IMHO a more likely explanation. While long-pressing it and waiting for forced shutdown you had also held and pressed down its back cover and, subsequently, the situated beneath sensor's connector. This is the fix as N7 motherboard gets touch, USB, accelerometer and compass data via the wide silver cable which often suffers from poor contact affecting all these functions and no abrupt power loss can bring them back.
With my device I tried shaking it and pressing in any way before forcing the shutdown. Thus for me I believe it was not an hardware issue but a low level software one.
Months are passed since that episode and the tablet had not the defect anymore.
Obviously what is good for my N72 may not be right for yours...
My Flo (completely stock) sometimes gets stuck in landscape. I can either reboot and fixes itself, or I have an app that will only open in portrait mode. Launching that always gets things to right again.
So I agree that it's not always a "hardware" issue.
I have found in most cases that it is the Google app causing it, if you clear the cache to it the screen will start rotating just fine right after it's cleared.

So, I got my new Pixel XL (128 GB, Quite Black, Google Store), and activated it with Project Fi a few days ago. Today, I noticed a bizarre issue. So far, I'm only able to get it to occur consistently in the Play Store. When pressing the back button on the navigation bar to return to the previous screen, the phone locks up, but not completely. The app and the back button both become completely unresponsive to touch, the volume buttons do not do anything, but the overview, home, and power button still function as normal. Navigating away from the app, or turning the screen off and back on fixes it, but it happens consistently enough to be very irritating. However, I can't get it to happen consistently enough to isolate a cause, or to capture a screen recording of it. It seems, though, to be more likely that it is app related, but that also seems strange given that it is the Play Store. The only other correlation I can find is to the Keyboard (which I'm using GBoard). Sometimes, it seems to occur after using the keyboard to search the store.
Does anyone have any suggestions/tips/etc. on a way to deal with it? Its hardly a fatal issue, but strange, and I'm curious if anyone knows what this could be.
Also, a side question: is it even worth unlocking/installing mods/etc.? I got 5+ hours of SOT with my first full charge cycle, curious if anyone has any input.

I recommend unlocking so at least if you ever have a bad ota update you can still fix you're device with a new factory image. As far as the lag issues. I had something similar when Gboard first came out. What is you're current build. You may need to update you're phone.

Although, if I unlock the bootloader I may fall all the way down the rabbit hole, haha.

Nothing wrong with falling down the rabbit hole lol. Personally I run stock system with my mod pack. Gives me incredible battery cuz it's stock system but I also get to have some custom tweaks. Best of both worlds.

Any particular mods? I've been flashing/modding/etc since my Droid Razr M but reading around on the Pixel XL forums is the first time I've felt out of my depth again - all this A/B partition stuff, changes to the way root and GApps work, etc. seems so different.
The Pixel Stand is not working as designed. When I place it on the stand and set it up to do photo frame/slideshow, nothing happens. It just sits on an ambient screen and doesn't even move around that ambient screen to avoid screen burn-in.
I spent a good amount of time on a remote session with Google with doing various cache/data cleans and removing updates and things like that and nothing is resolving it.
I also had a problem completing setup with my Google Home Hub and I am wondering if perhaps this is a Google Assistant issue. The Google Home app kept prompting me to complete the step to Enable VoiceMatch and it would just go into a perpetual PLEASE WAIT. I had to grab another non-pixel 3 phone to complete that setup in the Google Home app.
It charges but does nothing else as it should.
Anyone else encounter this?
I just received my Pixel Stand as well. During setup I set it to turn on the Always On Display when on the stand. However, like you, I'm noticing that it just sits there with the same screen, just dimmed. I'm afraid of premature screen burn in because of this.
So, I tried turning 'Always On Display' while on the Pixel Stand off but that option is nowhere in settings. Under Settings > Display > Ambient Display, it's turned off but still stays on when on the stand. So it has to be a second setting somewhere else. I just can't find it and I've dug through everything. Until I can figure this out I'm hesitant to even use the Pixel Stand.

This for sure isn't the fix but I did a factory reset and this time when I set up the stand, I got a new prompt that I didn't see the first time...it was about Google Assistant...completed the setup and bam, it works. Even the ambient display dims better. So, as I kind of suspected, it was a Google Assistant issue.
for the record, you can find the settings at: settings > connected devices > previously connected devices > then tap the cog next to 'pixel stand'
Yikes. I really don't want to factory reset. My setup screens all worked perfectly fine. It's just that during the setup, when it asked me to enable Always On Display while the phone is on the stand, I said 'Yes'. Now I can't turn it off. If I have to factory reset to fix that I'm going to be quite annoyed.

I've thought a lot about the stands...beyond the slide show, I really don't want "always on" all the time...and there is no way to turn it off unless room is dark. So it truly may not be an $80 value, though most OEM wireless chargers are pricey. I just prefer the OEM accessories. I'd still be on a Note 9 if the camera wasn't such a letdown.
Not very happy with my $80 wireless charging stand so far, so hoping that future software updates will fix: 1) Photo frame only working in a lit room, 2) Time not moving around screen (like clock screensaver) and notifications not appearing unless I double tap to view regular lock screen. Fingers crossed...

Agreed...the only notifications that appear over the slideshow or ambient screen is text messages. Nothing else pops up.
Guess I'm trying to understand the concern with screen burn-in though. The dim stand mode is not much different than the typical always on display screen, so how could it make the phone more susceptible to burn-in?

strange, the pixel stand puts the clock and notifications in one place and doesnt move them around.
is there a way to make the clock move around the screen?
shouldnt the clock be moving instead of always in the middle?

did the clock start moving around afterwards?
i cant get the clock to move around teh screen even after a fact reset.
The only workaround I've found for now is to turn on the standard clock screensaver from settings, which is a moving dim clock, however it cancels the extra functionality of the stand app.

I dont know if anyone else is really REALLY let down by the amount of continual problems with regard to the Pixel 3?? I mean wow, there are all kinds of problems again with this phone??? I have had the og Pixel, Pixel 2, and the Pixel 3 and each phone has had more than its share of problems. I have noticed that the "Pixel" excitement has calmed down a lot too probably because of these problems. I had a Galaxy S9 before this Pixel 3 and NEVER had any issues with it at all. I mean this is "Google" shouldn't we expect more?? Or has everyone just come to expect problems and the usual answers of "fix incoming", "thats not a bug its a feature", and my favorite "were looking into this" LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
beginning to miss my op6 right about now haha
just forget the pixel stand and don't go through the set up and it keeps the display off while charging.
other than that this phone is great,I do notice it's a littleslower than my op6 sometimes (opening apps sometimes instant sometimes not, maybe an EAS feature) but I think that's because my op6 had a kernel installed from the get go.
My 1 month old Pixel 6 Pro suddenly began to display screen flashing and flickering.
It starts a few seconds after the phone is unlocked or about a minute after the phone is turned on. If you leave the screen alone, so no touching, everything is normal. But once this issue appears, it won't go away until you turn off the phone or lock the screen.

Any ideas if this could be SW related or it is for sure a HW defect? Thanks!
Seller said they managed to fix it by factory resetting the phone and installing updates. Which I find weird since I did this multiple times before sending it back. Google seems to agree with seller.
I guess I just have to wait to get it back and hope for the best, but this in no way seems a SW issue to me.
But is it even possible that software could cause such issues?
I'm also starting to have this issue on the right side of my Pixel 7 Pro. It's not a severe as the video above but it's still noticeable

Phone is now back from Google assistance and the problem is solved. I don't know what they did but I suspect the screen was replaced in warranty since it had the protective foil on.
I forgot to update my story but, I made a claim to Google and went to a UBreakiFix store and got it checked out the same day. They replaced the screen for free and that fixed the issue.

This problem started on my phone several months ago and hasn't gone away.
Apparently when the p6p was released it was a fairly common occurrence - solved by software.
I tested various screen setups and found a way to use my phone ; I can't set the screen resolution over 51% , turn off Adaptive brightness, turn on Dark theme. Smooth display doesn't seem to have any bearing and if the phone is cold it is more prone to flickering.
Once it starts to flicker I use the slider to bring the level to its lowest and back to about 45%. Pita but workable (can't return phone for a screen replacement).
Managed to eliminate the flickering by installing magisk module AOSP Mods
(changed screen brightness in Miscellaneous/Screen resolution - set the slider to 50%) . Back to full brightness with no flicker.
