Hello,
I am going to root my phone soon using an XTC clip, and I read that I have to factory reset my phone before flashing a ROM.
My main concern is my apps. Will, when I flash a ROM and use the phone again, my apps still be there in the market? I have free shazam for example (because i downloaded it before it became a paid app), and I want to know if it will afterwards still know I should get a free version.
Or will, when you factory reset, all the apps be gone from the market aswel? I read titanium backup is great, but that it only works when rooted, so I can't use that.
Thanks for your input
what do I loose when I factory reset

everything lol. includes phone apps, market downloaded apps, all accounts data, all application data, phone calender entries, and what not.
--if one is on official unrooted phone and made factory reset, then he will loose all phone memory related things except the operating system.
--if one is on rooted phone (with custom recovery) and made factory reset, then he will loose all the phone memory related things including the operating system.
Ok, if u have asked a question like what do i retain when i factory reset, then the answer will be. Everything that can be kept online like gmail contacts, gmail calender entries. And every application data or cache data that will be saved on memory card like google maps data, dictionaries data etc. I dont know about the memory card apps whether they will work after factory reset. ok

u need to search and download each and every app again from the market. I think it wont make a note of the list of ur apps.
But u have many options.
--u can now use xtc clip to s-off ur device. then donot downgrade. just flash a custom recovery by PC49IMG.ZIP process. Then u can make a nandroid backup of the present os. And while restoring, u will have few options regarding what to restore. Or alternative to nandroid backup, u can just use a titanium backup here as ur phone is rooted.
--u cannot have free access to shazam further unless u back it up now.
--Its not just the "titanium backup" which will back up the apps. There are many freeware application managers in the market which back up the phone apps to apk files on the memory card. just go to the market and have a look at.
Maybe the thread title was badly chosen, the question was more about the apps Too bad, I was hoping it was somewhere stored with google, and that it would simply re-download the apps after the flashing.
But so I will use the XTC clip to s-off and then backup my stuff.
Cheers

You will find there is already a how-to thread explaining how to root and what it accomplishes.
Does it detail how to back up my whole device's data?
Use mybackup, or Google'sbackup/restore service (settings-application I think) to backup your apps. Unlocking the boot loader will wipe your settings, so you will have to set those up again. It is worth it though...

Google's backup does not work, at least in my experience. The box was checked before i did a factory reset. I have re-installed a few apps and their data wasn't reinstalled by Google. Also, the wifi setting weren't re-installed
It doesn't back up the data, does it? just the apps themselves as it auto-installs them from the Market when you sign into your account on an Android handset
Regardless of device encryption and fingerprint scanners and the like, couldn't someone just get your phone, boot into recovery, and factory reset it? Wouldn't that undo any security you had on device?
Yes but the actual files have been encrypted. So while they can start the device fresh and use file recovery tools to "get" the old files, they are useless.
And they would be useless to everyone after that, even you? I guess that would be pretty good. So you encrypt to protect your user data, and you fingerprint lock to make sure nobody can ever decrypt, even if they factory reset thru recovery, which will get past your fingerprint scanner but not previous encryption. That right?
Actually since lollipop you must log out of your Google account before a reset. If you just factory reset you well still have access to the device to track it out wipe your account from it.
I could be wrong here, but if you have stock recovery, a factory wipe can only be started in the phone's settings menu. If you have twrp installed, a wipe can be started with out being in the phone, but you need a password to start it.
If you do wipe the phone, it is still useless as you need the persons gmail username and password to complete the setup, so the phone is useless to all other users bar the user of the phone.
I think you can factory reset from stock recovery.
So I don't get it. I thought user data was encrypted from phone, i.e., the internal storage. If I factory reset, I don't need a Google account to start the phone up. So then couldn't I access the internal storage data with a file explorer?
You have to authorize the phone to sync with your computer so you can not get on that way either. If you do not authorize you can not push adb or anything else.
As km8j said, yes, you can factory reset the phone, but you won't be able to recover any of the encrypted data. That's why before you get rid of an old phone you should encrypt (if it wasn't) and wipe it.

Thats not quite right. If you factory reset your phone, you do need a google account to complete the initial setup wizard. The only exception is if the user releases it from his or her's google account so it can be sold on.
But yes to complete the instillation it will ask for a google account that has been authorised and wont continue until it gets it. This happens automaticly the first time you sign in to play store.
Also factory reset will fully wipe the phone, brand new out of the box. It also wipes the users data, so if you were able to get on the phone, there would be no data to access. I really do like the way google have thought about it. Also I never keep anything on the phone that I would consider critical.
A lot of inaccurate information here. You have been able to skip that Google account setup on all android phones for the past few years. Also in basically any file system, when joy delete a file, even formatting, the content is not deleted. So while the information is not there at face value when you wipe the phone it can easily be recovered without encryption.

Yeah, that keeps confusing me. I have activated so many phones without inputting a Google account. It says "skip" right there on the screen!
Didn't Google introduce the security features with the Nexus 6 and 5.0? It locks the phone to your google account even after a factory reset but requires compatible hardware.
I haven't seen it mentioned with this year's devices but when setting up a pin on the 5x I believe it asked if I wanted to enable that feature.

No. If your data is encrypted, no one can access it without your decryption key. As for access to the device, if you had set up a Google account on the device, and had a lockscreen password/pin/pattern/etc., then no one else can use the device other than you unless you remove your Google account and lockscreen password before you factory reset. This was a new feature introduced with devices that sold with 5.0+

With the stock recovery, you can reset either from within Android or from within the stock recovery.

Prior to devices shipped with 5.0+, this was true. No longer.

Yes, you can skip Google account setup. However, IF you do set up a Google account and a lockscreen password, THEN you cannot skip the Google account setup on that device after a factory reset (if you hadn't already removed the account prior to the reset).

I got my H815 back from LG yesterday. When I booted it for the first time, I was given the option of restoring the phone from several backups which had been made, presumably, with LG Backup. This reinstalled all the apps I had on my phone, both system and from play store etc.
So I unlocked the bootloader this morning, which returned the phone to factory state again, but I didn't get the option to restore from backup when rebooting. Is there a way to do this manually or do I need to do a complete wipe and reflash of the rom?

Why not perform a factory reset??

Yeah I already tried that. Luckily Google restored my settings for any apps I reinstalled, but I've lost a lot of contacts, which should have been restored as well.

Hi, I don't know if it's the right place to ask for help, but I'll still try.
A couple of days ago while travelling I updated my OnePlus 9 Pro with the latest update of Android 12 not knowing that update was apparently quite buggy as I found out later. Previously all updates have always run smoothly on my phones, so I wasn't really cautious about it. As a result after update phone didn't work anymore, it started always to vibrate after giving sim card PIN kinda trying to start (similar to the sound of whirring hard drive), but it couldn't go beyond the home screen's wallpaper. As I needed my phone, I had to choose "Format user data" under Wipe data from the boot menu as there weren't any other options under Wipe. I got a working phone after that, but I lost all my data.
So the question is: is there a way to restore videos and photos from the gallery (my photos weren't synchronizing to Google Photos) after this formatting? And more precisely, eg. by using DroidKit Data recovery tool I can perform only quick recovery unrooted, which doesn't find any files from the gallery. There is an option to perform a deep recovery, but for that I need to root my phone. Rooting apparently requires bootloader unlocking, which most likely wipes all phone data anyway without possibility to restore.
And more questions: would a deep recovery even find those gallery files, if the phone would be rooted? If bootloader unlocking wipes all data completely, so it wouldn't be possible to restore any data after that for sure? Is there an option to perform a deep scan without a phone being rooted? Is there an option to root without bootloader unlocking? There are some apps, which don't really do automatic rooting, and they aren't trustworthy, despite they say that they can root phones in seconds.
I definitely have learned from this recent experience, and I will do better in the future.
I think most likely it's not possible to restore my photos and videos I lost in this case, but I just had to ask to make sure, there are no more tricks I can use... Any thoughts? Thanks!
I would think there would be an app in the app store that would recover your photos and videos without root since they are to located in the root drive. It may take a few tries to find the right app. Good luck. That is why I routinely backup everything on my internal storage to the PC just for this reason.
Your storage is encrypted. There is no way to recover the files as the factory reset generated new keys when wiping the storage. Sorry for the bad news. Make sure to make backups before taking updates in the future is all anyone can suggest.

Thank you for the reply! I just wonder, why then everywhere on so many websites they say, it's possible to recover data after factory reset? But as I tried it seems impossible as you say.
Just one example: https://www.hardreset.info/devices/...possible-to-recover-data-after-factory-reset/.

I mean a lot of those places just copy and paste info to drive clicks. Android didn't always encrypt userdata.

I've tried many of those before, but they don't see gallery photos nor videos at all after phone factory reset, though they claim they can do that. What these apps can see and recover in my experience are call history, documents, audio files, sms (all of these things were recovered anyway from the phone backup), photos and videos from Whatsapp (which I don't need as its' chats were backed up before that update). Some of them offer a deep recovery (don't know what a deep scan would find in the end), which requires phone to be rooted, and that requires bootloader unlocking, which will wipe storage for good anyway, so basically all those apps are useless.
