About Facebook app and Messenger - ZenFone 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi cant find accurate answer about the issue of battery drain of fb app and messenger
so im asking us this true? they used more battery than other apps and also more ram used and still wake up even ur phone is in doze or idle? thanks for answering and sorry for my bad english
----------------------------
i dont know whats the meaning i installed betterbattery
please explain to me heres my screenshots

You can verify this by installing BetterBatteryStats, download here.
After installing, just let it get stats, use your phone like you regularly do, and then see the Partial Wakelocks and Alarms section to see the apps draining your battery. That being said, there are also other sections of the app that would give you detail to where your battery is going.

thanks ill try it
i have 16% in fb app and 14% in messenger alarms whats that mean? thanks
no fb apps on partial wakelocks

@t0per666 : What rom are you using there?

Yes, facebook has made a very bad app, which consumes large portions of ram, battery and also reduces performance.
Rather than using facebook official app, i recommend on using folio, folio uses less ram and battery but still not good enough.

Run far away from the fb app or anything connected to it. I access via my browser.

using official cm13 build march 17

Programs that kill battery life??

I am always afraid of programs that will drain my battery.. I am some what new to the android.. I understand killing apps with an app killer program was bad, so I removed "Advanced app killer"
My battery life with the Fresh rom is doing pretty good..
But the fact that I don't have an app killer always scares me.. For example..
I just got that Tikl program that allows a walkie talkie type of conversation..
I keep thinking its constantly running and draining the battery.
Same with Vlingo.. I have the Widget so I can turn it off but if I go into running programs its there..
Are these programs draining battery?
Is there a list someone came up with, that list programs that are bad and drain?
Being that we don't/shouldn't have an app killer (coming from the CE mobile land)
just becasue an app is still active in the background doesn't mean it's using cpu or battery. One of the best apps you cen get for monitoring this type of thing is systempanel. If you set it up to mionitor, it will tell you exactly how much battery and cpu each app has used over the past 2 hours, 8 hours, day, etc.
+1 for SystemPanel. It is the first app I ever purchased for Android and is still one of the best.
Watch out for camera360 its a battery drainer.

See.. even those Alps scare me.. for systempanel to gauge the CPU programs are using ... well that means systempanel needs to be running alllllll the time..

The amount that systempanel uses is negligible, and its usefulness is worth it. Besides, once you use it to find your rogue apps, you can uninstall it. Again though, the amount of CPU and battery that it uses are really almost nothing.
Remember, this isn't windows, where things keep running in the background, using up cycles and draining battery.

An alternate to systempanel is WatchDog. It's the same idea. You should really download it for peace of mind. You will see that for the most part that most apps fade to the background if you're not actively using them. I used to use ATK but after using WatchDog to monitor CPU usage I see that the OS does a pretty good job of keeping stuff in control.
In regards to your concern about the CPU monitoring app using too much memory or CPU power, don't worry. It is pretty minimal. In WatchDog you can set how often you want the app to monitor. Alternately you can do a live reading where you see what is draining the CPU at that very moment (well actually in 5 second intervals)

this is true, I use both watchdog and systempanel, and have them both on all the time. Although its a great app, and works perfectly, watchdog does use up a bit more CPU than I would like though.

OK I got system panel and have it running. Not sure I know what I'm doing LOL. I did check off a couple things in the settings. Like to check the monitoring and stuff. I guess some of you can explain to me what to check.. please... in the meantime I am looking at the CPU circle.. it sits anywhere from 6.6 to about 10 or so.. then sometimes it spikes to 65-70 percent ...

Ok cool. First of all, ignore the spikes you see in the CPU wheel. You'll notice that it spikes whenever you touch the screen or scroll. What you want to do is make sure you have monitoring checked off in settings. Then leave it overnight. The first time you use the phone in the morning, the first thing you want to do is go to menu, then monitor, then history. At the top of that screen are your options to view the timeframe and whether you're looking at the graph showing CPU vs usage vs battery, or the top apps. for the graphs screen, if you have high CPU with high battery drainage when there's no usage, then you have a rogue app. That top apps screen shows which apps ate using the most battery/cpu by percentage, and you can tap each app listing for more detail.

Thanks so much!
So tomorrow I can look at the top Apps and if it shows zero percent I assume it means the app is good ?

Exactly. Chances are though, there will be a few items there over zero percent. That's ok. If you have anything over say 2 percent over the last 8 hours when there was no usage you may want to consider getting rid of it. Or at least keeping your eye on it. The goal here is to show a horizontal line for battery when there's no usage.

You can, but its not necessary. Besides, this isn't a test environment, you're looking for the battery leeches for how you normally use the phone. And monitoring should always be on.

OP, I hear you. An app simply running in the background won't exactly kill the battery, unless it's actively using a connection and CPU.
You should be wary of ANY app that requires a constant connection in the background and doesn't use Google's Cloud to Device Push service. Tikl is one of them and one of the reasons why I don't use it.
Even if Tikl or other apps like Fring, tango, and most IM apps use their own private push servers, they are still separate concurrent connections and they all send different keepalive signals to maintain the connection.
Some high quality apps that DO use Google C2DM thus using little to no battery in the background while still allowing you to receive messages:
- BeejiveIM
- Trillian Beta (Free if you search google)
- WhatsApp
- SpringPad (With push alerts and bookmarks)
- Chrome To Phone
- Stock apps such as Gmail and Google Talk
- Any other app that lists "Allow device to send cloud to device messages" instead of just "Full internet access" under Internet Permissions when installing.
Some apps are known to hurt battery life such as:
- Ebuddy, Meebo and most IM apps besides BeejiveIM and Trillian
- Tango Video Calls (Even with latest update)
- TweetDeck with default settings (Checks for new tweets every THREE minutes by default for EVERY column! Insane)
- Twitter , the official client checks for new tweets every 15 minutes.
- Qik, one of the lousiest written apps I have ever seen
Also, read the reviews and test them if you're not sure. It's very unfortunate that developers still seem to ignore battery life. That's exactly the reason why Apple(And now even Microsoft) had to "spoonfeed" them by not allowing them to have deeper access to the system.

+1 on the qik and tango mentions. Those two were especially terrible - tango was so bad, i didn't even bother trying the new version.
Boy I really hope tikl isn't that bad.. I love that program. My dad and I use it all the time

OK.. I woke up, looked at the program and LOL XDA took 2.8% I did forget to exit though , tikl took 1.3% the next one was system at .3% the rest showed zero. I looked at the graph and I had a spike at 4am(ghosts in my house?) Besides that everything looks OK?

ok - so other than tikl, you don't have any problem apps. Now you just need to monitor daily to see whats getting used - if an app is showing a high percentage when you haven't used it (or baerely used it), you may want to get rid of it.

[APP] Deep Sleep Battery Saver

Hello folks,
I came across this app which basically forces your phone into deep sleep mode when not in use( screen off). It turns data, wifi off etc. And wakes phone on in every half hour or other intervals you choose to check email etc. It does not do much when you are using the phone but saves a lot of battery when the phone is not being used.
I am using CM10 alpha 6 and it works great for the time being. I highly recommend it for people having battery issues.
If you want to try go to google play and search for "deep sleep battery saver".
My first impressions are really good.Just wanted to share...
Edit: Here is the link for play store

Apparently there is also free xda version of the app which includes paid options. There is a thread created by the developer on xda but since I am on my phone right now, I cant find the link. But a google search will lead you there.
EDIT: Link for xda version is also added for your convenience.

That is the point. It just wakes every once in a while (30, 45, 60 minutes etc. you define) and get all sorts of notifications etc. There will be delays for notifications. It is a price to pay for a dramatic increase in battery life. If you want to be notified immediately for a facebook, twitter etc., then this is not for you.
Now I can get around 30 hours of battery life easily. Before my battery used to die in about 17 hours or so. So the choice is up to you..

Improving battery longevity

I've had Lollipop since the intro and and at first it was fine then it started to be buggy. I decided to hard reset and the phone works better but what I miss was the stellar battery longevity. From an unplug at 7 am I'd have 45-50% by 7 pm, now that's gone. I have 13% by &pm. Keep in in mind that I have a retail version and turned off any app possible that I don't want to work ,plus used Debloater. Lastly I use Greenify .
Looking at the battery specs I see that the Exchange services are at the top . Plus I see that Nova launcher is high on therunning list. This is a new version and i wonder if it's a power eater?
Here's what's in the running list-
settings- 210mb
nova- 71mb
weather app- 24mb
ipec - 8.3mb
securitymanagerservice- 5.4mb
passpoint settings- 4.4mb
android- 5.4mb
Bluetooth- 9.7 mb, Bluetooth is off and used only when i need it but still shows in this list
google play- 52mb
contacts- 15mb
context service- 17mb
email- 43mb
exchange- 20mb
greenify- 8.8mb
samsung keyboard- 45mb, why does the keyboard have to show and it's not being used
systemui- 16mb
Thanks in advance

Well, I'm not sure why you're using the data you've provided to try to explain battery usage. The data you've provided looks like the amount of RAM the app/file occupies. The amount of RAM an app or process uses is not indicative of the amount of battery that will be consumed when that app/process is running. A much better indication of what's going on with battery consumption is data that indicates what and how much battery is being used by an app or process...like screen on time or cpu time used by an app.
If I understand you rightI think you're talking about the settings /battery area-
if so
Exchange services are at 4%
Android system- 1%
Android OS- 1%
Email- 1%

Yeah, that area gives you a better idea of what is using the battery. If you really want to analyze what is using the battery resources in your phone you need to download and run an app that is designed to monitor your system and report what is using battery resources, how much and when. There are a number of apps in the Play Store that will do that. Many of them are free, but the better ones will cost you a dollar or two. But, if you're really interested in finding out what is "eating" your battery resources it may be well worth a dollar or two.
Here's list of the most common battery hogs: Facebook, live wallpaper, apps that sync data or other information every minute or two, screen on time-how often are you looking at the display and for how long, streaming video and music, gps, wifi, nfc and bluetooth turned on but not needed or in use, widgets open and running but not needed or used.

Facebook, I use a browser link not the app
no Live wallpaper
apps that sync data or other information every minute or two- sounds like the emails. There doesn't seem to be a tweak anywhere for that
no streaming or music
GPS is on but didn't seem to bother before the reset
Wifi - used on demand
NFC- don't use
Bluetooth-also used on demand but is still listed as running when off
The only widget i use is my weather app- I do like it though- Weather XL
Thanks

CM12 ROM eats battery

Hey guys
I recently installed CM12 (official version) but i noticed that it eats up alot of battery alot quicker than my stock ROM
i installed better battery stats and started recording stuff but idk how to read the information it provides
can someone help me?
Thanks
You could also try a cpu app such as no frills cpu to set the min and max frequencies.
I don't want to mess with clocks till I have expended all my other options. Do you guys know how to use the information betterbattery stats record?

Set BBS to show stats since Unplugged.
Charge your device so that it is fully charged just before going to bed.
Unplug and let it set idle overnight. This will let you know about background processes consuming battery, as opposed to you actually using the phone and consuming battery.
First thing in the morning open BBS. Click the share icon at the top left of the screen. Select the Text Dumpfile option and then Save. You could then take screenshots of the BBS pages; especially Partial Wakelocks, Other, and Alarms.
There are active threads with participants who are very familiar with interpreting the BBS results obtained.

does removing snapchat and Facebook help battery life

I see everyone posting crazy good sot and here I am getting 3 or so with stock 8. 0 and custom kernel. Is no one using snapchat and Facebook apps on their phone? I'm trying to figure out why my battery life is not as good.
Snapchat App I don't know, but removing Facebook, definitely yes, Facebook is awesome but very battery hungry app.
Snapchat is the biggest battery hog app probably followed by Facebook and Facebook messenger. Unfortunately I use both quite a lot so understandably my battery is about half of what others get but oh well
I get like 7 to 8.5 SoT everyday on OB3 stock kernel even with facebook apk, messenger lite and instagram or whatsapp not using greenify or any battery saver just all my apps on black amoled substratum themes, this phone's battery is amazing!
Removing both not only prolongs your battery life, but also your general life
Snaochats hogs all of my battery. Sometimes it uses 30% of my battery. Way more than fb

Battery usage varies from person to person.
Your screen on time will be less even if you are not using any battery hoging apps, when the phone is idling for more than a day.
You get more SOT if you use phone continuosly.
Also screen brightness matters
You might need to get an app like Gsam Battery Monitor or Better Battery Stats to see if something is keeping your phone from sleeping. Facebook could definitely be a culprit but I can't really say for sure because I don't use it.
For Facebook and Messenger use Lite version, looks bit strange at beginning but give Your phone way better battery life.
