I've looked through some threads n done a google search but still having trouble...how do I get my windows 10 laptop to recognize my 5x so I can transfer files? My phone is in USB debugging mode and I tried selecting both mtp and ptp options to no avail. Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!

I have found that using a usb2 port is more reliable than USB 3. Check device manager when phone plugged in for any drivers you may need

Ya that's what my laptop has is usb2, I'll have to check the drivers again...if I go to devices/printers, I can find the 5x there, but it doesn't open up as a folder or anything, I can only check properties...

I've updated the driver and my phone still is not recognized for file transfer...it will charge, but that's it...can someone help? Thanks much.

Windows 10 has become useless to me...never had any connection issues with 7...8 n 10 just don't work like they should out the box.

Go to device manager on your pc. Do you see a usb with a yellow exclamation mark on it? If so right click on it and go to where you can choose a driver from a list on your computer. Choose the adb andriod composite (or something along those lines)

You are sure that you change mode to mtp again after (!) connecting via statusbar?
Windows 10 works fine. You're doing something wrong

Are you enabling usb storage? When you plug it in pull the notification bar down and click on it then hit the button? Dont need drivers to access mass storage

Drivers
You have 2 options
You can download the drivers referenced here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1307478
I had to enable USB Debugging to get it to work correctly with Windows 7.
But after that you can access both the SD card and the internal memory on the phone through Windows Explorer
Or you can use the Kies software and do it wirelessly. Details here:

Have you turned on USB debugging mode?
Reboot phone and pc. Mine does that sometimes. I bought a mt4g new and it did that too me. Returned it and got a new one and it did the same. Reboot my pc and it worked. I felt like a tool.

I have no problems using a 32 bit PC - but with 64 bit Window's professional, it is as if the phone were only connected to power. Companion link synch program overcomes this problem -- apparently it installs its own drivers and after doing a usb synch to outlook, I am able to use windows to transfer files between the galaxy S 2 (t989) and windows. However I have not found any drivers that permit the Samsung to connect to the Windows 7 using usb cable w/o using companion link first.
I had the same problem and samsung tech support had me pull the battery for 30 seconds. That did the trick, but it has happened once since.

When I connect my phone to the computer it does not get recognized. The phone charges but I can't use it in USB mode. I have a USB different than the original in the box. Help would be appreciated

Certain USB cables do not recognize my phone either... they only charge it. Try the one that came in the box.

Install the Samsung Kies (not mini kies) will help. The driver came with Samsung Kies works better. I have one of my friend S2 and each time I plug his samsung S2, I need to run samsung Kies to get good driver and after a while I can use Window Explorer to read the 2 SD cards, and I don't need to run samsung Kies with mine. (bizzare but how it works)
I know MTP is supposed to just work in Windows, but it doesn't do anything for me. My PC thinks I have attached a camera. I can open said camera and see only 2 folders (no names) but they are the DCIM folder and a folder called "Android" with some sub garbage folders under them. How do I get to my folders using it? I have tried it on 4 laptops and 3 desktops and everytime I get the same results. I'd prefer to use the old mass storage option, but it seems like unless you root, you're SOL.

Really? For me it's the opposite. I had the OP's issue until I turned ON USB debugging.

Resolved - I ran a ton of windows updates and all of a sudden my system said "MTP device detected". Wonder which update it was. They were all pretty basic ones, but maybe they triggered something that repaired the service.

I've got a Sprint Galaxy SIII, SPH-L710 16GB, no SD Card. When I connect the device to my computer (WinXP, latest Samsung Drivers Installed) I'm able to see files I have downloaded to the storage via the device itself, as well as an .apk that I moved over from my computer, but I'm not able to see the various folders (DCIM, Foursquare, Music, Goomanager, Etc...) Is there something I'm missing here? Phone is running CM10.1 JellyBro.
**In the attached screenshot you can see the various files and folders, when I try to access the storage on my desktop, all I can see are the GAPPS.zip file, and the WhatsApp.apk
I know when I connect mine (vistax64) it pulls it up as a media device should be able to see it under my computer. If not I would look under your media player settings. Or you may wanna check to see if USB debugging is checked on your phone

Thanks. I actually tried that. USB debugging changed nothing. When I threw an SD Card in though, it suddenly was able to see SOME of my folders... I'm gonna do a clean wipe and start fresh, using the CM10.1 Official Nightly. I really need to get this remedied. I'll circle back once I have some results.
Should be studying for my MA Life Insurance license, and not buggering with my phone... oh well.

Thanks. Unfortunately, that didn't work for me. I'm trying to make sense of the file system on this device, Emulated, Vs SDcard and ExtSDcard...
I am having trouble transferring files from the computer to my Nexus 7. Root and flashing ROM went fine everything else works flawless just can't load pictures or music onto the tablet. I am currently running android 4.3 and cleanROM 1.3 on new nexus 7. It must be something simple that I am overlooking sorry if this is a stupid question I did try to research it and came up with nothing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Settings-storage-click menu and enable MTP

If you want to do it remotely (way more annoying than with a cable, but once you get use to it, it can get handy)
Transfer rates can be relatively speaking, slow, but doesn't become a huge issue unless you're moving a lot of large sized files (i.e., high quality movies, a library of music etc.)
I use SSHDroid with WinSCP (For windows).
If you run Linux you don't really need WinSCP.
Using this method requires a little know-how with SSH / SCP to get optimal use out of this method.
Also, as a side note, your files are transmitted relatively safely (i.e., it's encrypted).
