Don't understand much here. Help? - Samsung Galaxy Gio GT-S5660

Hey, I'm new here and don't really understand much. I've got a Gio phone that's incredibly slow at times and sometimes I wish to just smash it. Unfortunately I don't have any money to buy a new phone so I guess I'm stuck with mine. I heard that custom roms can help in speeding up the phone and are generally better at everything since they are updated and not left to rot, like the stock versions. Problem is: I've read a few lines of some guides here and I don't understand how to do anything. With every custom rom, the developer assumes you already know how to do everything, and I don't blame them, but I have a stock rom and stock kernel and all that. Even if I want to install a new recovery apparently I can't, I read somewhere that it doesn't work with the stock kernel. So... Any help for this newb?

How to hack / modify Desire Kernels???

Hi all!
I have spent over half an hour searching but to no avail so thought I'd ask here, how are the kernels hacked or modified?
When it comes to the real tech stuff I'm a bit lost, and to be honest before I stumbled across this site I knew nothing about making custom ROMS, but thanks to all of you out there, you have taught me loads without me asking much, so its here I need to ask!
Thanks in advance for your time & replies,
Arty.
just search the web for "linux kernel" the android kernel is a linux one.
when you know a bit about linux kernel you can add kernel mods to it, as in android.
you just need to download the source of the kernel modify it and compile it than.
hope this helped a bit
ps.: and if you dont have the source you have to be a tech/kernel genius like -snq
Thanks for your reply there crendot!
I was afraid I'd have to know about Linux stuff, which to be quite honest I dont!
I have messed about with a Ubuntu Virtual Machine in the past (when I first read how to root the Desire) but I find it too difficult to understand, I'm much more at home with the old DOS commands personally!
Only reason I ask is that my fone is playing up and has overheating / reboot loop issues with anything greater than Android 2.2 (since it came back from repair when I dropped it & cracked the screen completely) and so far I am stuck with my own slightly customed Rooted 2.2 with standard features (no 4-in-1 menu, no wake & unlock on trackpad and the DSP manager wont work) also, I have not yet tested it, but I know only a few kernels will let me send & recieve MMS, the previous build was a lightly customed LeeDrOiD_V3.0.8.2_GB_A2SD ROM, but alas kept bootlooping after it became warm and I found I couldnt do much with it :-(
I am hoping to get a shiney new Sensation soon, but until then I wanted to know how to modify the kernel to add / remove stuff!
Is there an easy way to take a kernel file & be able to 'read' it so I could copy the stuff I need into the stock kernel at all, or is that my wishfull thinking again?
Thanks again & sorry about the long reply!
Arty.
to understand what a kernel for the desire is, u can download the stock one on the htcdev.com site http://htcdev.com/devcenter/downloads
for example u can download the latest for our desire: "HTC Bravo – GB MR – 2.6.35 kernel source code"
that is the source code..u will see there are thousands of .c files...is not easy at all modify the kernel..it requires strong skills on linux and C language
about the send sms and mms, that is related to the rom and ur apn settings i think..not to the kernel..the kernel handle very low level actions..
maybe u would like to make custom roms..this is a bit much easy if u just cook it for example with the android kitchen (search for it)..the rom contain the kernel and the operating system and some apps
so lets check the facts!
did the phone overheat when it came back from repair (with stock rom)?
or have you flashed the new rom instant?
i would say you save all your stuff and do a nandroid backup.
than you follow this instructions to flash the rooted stock 2.2 rom and the radio
if the problem is still there i would say its a hardware problem, if not you can try other roms as long as no problems occure
dont play around with kernels, you dont have to, the stable kernels are in the roms
if they arent stable for you its not the kernels fault
i guess something messed up while you flashed something...
ps.: if you have absolutly no linux skills and so on, i would say you read into that before playing around with your mobile ^^
andQlimax:
Thanks for your reply also!
I know the APN settings for the mobile data & the MMS as I have written them down, the strange thing is I rooted my fiancee's Desire with the same ROM I was using at the time & she couldnt send or recieve MMS either (I'm O2 and she on Orange, both contract) and I have only found a few custom ROMs that allow the sending & recieving of MMS messages.
Also, I can make custom ROM's, I use Android Kitchen for most of the stuff (such as de-odexing, adding root, bash, busy box etc) but I find mostly when I bake the ROM using the kitchen I have errors on install, so I just prefer to use the kitchen for adding the needed stuff, then I'll just use windows to add / remove apps, boot animations & the audio files I want and just zip it myself & flash which has a higher success rate if I'm honest!

so lets check the facts!
Q: did the phone overheat when it came back from repair (with stock rom)?
A: No, I didnt have stock ROM on, I still had either LeeDroid HD or a HD InsertCoin ROM, which when I got the phone back I did a nandroid restore (I make them quite regular & copy them to my PC for extra piece of mind!)
Q: or have you flashed the new rom instant?
A: I also have installed an untouched ROM(untouched by me) a day or so after as the nandroid backup wasnt the version I wanted, I was due to be on holiday to Blackpool for a week, so I flashed the LeeDrOiD_V3.0.8.2_GB_A2SD ROM on both my desire & my fiancee's desire, hers was stable, mine I couldnt have the screen on for long before it got too hot (managed about 5 picture captures before I had to turn screen off for a while or it got too hot) then thing is, my fiancees gets got too, mine is the metal holders for the memory & sim cards, i either have to place something cold on them like a glass or even hold a fan to it for a few minutes until it cools down again!
Q:i would say you save all your stuff and do a nandroid backup.
than you follow this instructions to flash the rooted stock 2.2 rom and the radio
A:My current ROM is the standard one after downgrading HBOOT & using Unrevoked, but I used the phone's update feature to update everything to 2.2, then I rooted it and all works fine, BUT, if I add any modifications, like circle battery it is too much for the phone & gets too hot & power cycles, it gets to the boot anim then automatically reboots again, it can do this for about half hour before it works again, but I mostly just pull the battery & put something cold on the affected area! Yesterday I put my fone in the freezer for 10 mins, but using even the most basic customisation was getting hot again so I reverted back.
Q:if the problem is still there i would say its a hardware problem, if not you can try other roms as long as no problems occure
I have tried a number of other ROM's, but I think I will just stick with what I know works for now!
Q:dont play around with kernels, you dont have to, the stable kernels are in the roms if they arent stable for you its not the kernels fault
A: thanks for that, think I'll leave them alone for now lol!
Q: i guess something messed up while you flashed something...
A: Nothing went wrong with the flashing, as Ive done it so much in the past year or so I know what its sucessfull or not!
Q: ps.: if you have absolutly no linux skills and so on, i would say you read into that before playing around with your mobile ^^
A:Thanks!
I really dont know what the cowboys done with my fone, but they have totally screwed it up, the microphone dont work and I have to almost eat the damn thing n shout, even then sometimes nobody can hear me! The WiFi signal is horrendous since it came back, can only get a full signal if I sit on top of the router, so using the WiFI out of the room is now out of the question! I also noticed they had cut off or pulled off something that I am convinced is the WiFi aerial, it sits just under the flash, a black tab it looks like, they insist they didnt do it, I KNOW otherwise!
When I first saw the phone, the back cover wouldnt fit on & it looked like they hadnt installed everything right, so they had it back as also the in-call speaker didnt work either, there are still outstanding problems, but as I have left it so long (main shop in Glasgow, me in Paisley with no way of getting there myself) I doubt they will do anything about it, i am SOO angry there isnt a swear word I dont shout every time the bloody fone hets hot & power cycles!
Again thanks for all your replies & sorry for the essay lol!
Arty.
hi, ok it really sounds like they have messed up your little desire!
first of all i want to apologize i thought you dont have a clue about anything ^^
so i would suggest you try to flash a new radio maybe the 32.56.00.32U_5.17.05.23 helps, if you have it on your mobile reflash it just to be sure(if you have a different hboot, you have to do it with fastboot)
if this didnt help, i would say you try to flash the RUU
and when that fails i would start yelling at the customer support
wish you the best
ps.: i just started thinking if it is maybe the battery, change it with a/the other one

Why is it that ROM developers just can't seem to make ROM's that can boot up properly

I just can't figure it out. Every Jelly Bean ROM I have used so far has had the same problem. After using the ROM for a few days, and I decide to do a quick reboot to refresh the system, after only a few times doing this ever, the phone will either begin to boot-loop, or most of the time get stuck at the Google logo splash screen. Every time this happens I am forced to open the Toolkit and flash back to stock, and then reflash CWM recovery and install a different ROM and try again. Is it just me that is having this problem? I don't understand how it is so difficult for a ROM developer to create a ROM that can successfully boot up the OS every single time. Someone please give me a straight answer to this, because I can't figure it out.
If you are talking about 4.1 yeah I have noticed all of the ones Ive tried do it, something to do with the way the partitions are handled on jellybean.
It doesn't actually get stuck on the Google screen if you wait it out it'll eventually boot (usually 3+ mins here but I've read can take up to 10 minutes) worst I've had to do is clear the cache not actually reflash the rom. Now the OTA is here for GSM once they build from them instead of the dev version and AOSP they should get better same for CDMA whenever it comes
So you blame ROM devs?
Shame on you.

It's very frustrating for someone who is new to this. I have only very recently started installing custom ROM's. I had no idea who is to blame, although atleast now I get an idea of what the reason for this problem is.
Regardless of whether or not the problem you are having is caused by ROM developers(by the way, it isn't), don't act like an ungrateful douche.
WOW!!!
Touche. Ungrateful sucks. Glad you're learning something, though, I hope.

Definitely the wrong way to go about getting help... The fact that you just started flashing ROMs is the issue. You think the Dev would upload the ROM if it wasnt booting? I wouldnt
No way I would be ungrateful to a dev. This is time consuming **** and I didnt do anything but download and compile the source. Must take much more time to add in tweaks and theme them and all the other stuff they do
dude really???? Wrong way to do this dude....and its you messing up I have been on a jelly bean Rom and have never had a boot loop, I have flashed multiple roms and mods with these roms and have never had a boot loop read the instructions and wipe your cache also don't use reboot apps,,,,, if you want a better Rom take your computer sync your repo and build it from source your self and stop whining

To be able to learn something first you need to throw the arrogance into the dust bin.
Developing something is not everyone's cup of tea. If you are not happy with a particular ROM keep on trying the others but first give the developers a chance to rectify the bugs by reporting it to them.
Starting a thread like this will neither help you nor the developers.
My sig.
Post 2.
That'll show you how to install a rom, to make sure you're doing it correctly.
Enough bashing, guys...he's new.
Stop being lazy and dirty flashing roms.. Start clean, Wipe everything , only restore user apps via TB.. or just stay away from installing kernels and keep the stock one
You can't blame the Dev because the rom won't boot.. 9/10 its the user problem
Are you using the proper version? Only time I loop is because I skimmed the thread and didn't pay attention, tried acting smarter than I am, or messed with things i shouldn't have. Research before...avoid potential disaster later. And in either case, I quietly restore and nobody knows about it.

[Q] Upgrading to new ROM - few questions

Hello all,
Got my Droid Incredible 2 back in July 2011. Rooted and flashed a custom ROM pretty much right away. Since, I have had almost no problems with this phone (except the alarm clock stopped working a few months ago...) and it has been through a lot.
Recently, my phone has been acting kind of weird. I am not quite sure what the problem is (sometimes the battery seems to drain extremely fast, pretty much only symptom atm and very random). I am going to keep using it regularly for a few more days to see if the problem is persistent.
Anyways, if the phone is actually OK still, I was thinking it might be nice to get a fresh new ROM. Like I said, got the phone 07/11, haven't touched it since.
I am liking this ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1892450
What is the recommended process of backing up my data and flashing this one on? I see the instructions in the thread and intend to follow them, if anyone has more detailed explanations or would like to walk me through it that would be appreciated.
Do I need to update anything else? Like I said, phone is on pretty old software/firmware since I have not received any official updates over the life time of my phone. I am seeing kernels and radios, will mine work? Can I tell? Are there better ones I should use?
I am currently rooted. Running rmk's Ginger Sense ROM (found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1161411) which is Android version 2.3.3 and Sense version 2.1. I have Titanium Backup and Superuser apps installed.
So, its been a while. Help me update right. I will continue to research but my knowledge relating to this process is currently severely lacking, so any help is appreciated. My phone has been fast, smooth, and stable - I would love to keep it that way!
Thanks
Just follow the instructions in the op. Do them as it says. Be sure to reboot recovery after installing rom and before flashing gapps. It wont break your phone if you forget, but it might help the soft keys work right. No need to update firmware. The kernel he includes is custom too so you dont have to flash a different one, research if you want to though, there are others that work. Try it without changing radios, if you want to change radios its simple and there is a thread that has them on xda.

[Q] need some help with this

ok, i just got a captivate glide from my gf, ive been looking into flashing and rooting for about 3 months, but i JUST got an android (ik so behind) but originally i was looking into sidekick 4g for keyboard but this worked too in my eyes and it was free so i figured why not, but either way i wanted to root and flash, but now im at a barricade that im not sure if to continue or not, i rooted using one of the threads directions
this one to be exact
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1378082
i ran into a barricade here at first, the initial set up wouldnt run, i fixed that by doing the Vol. Down plus Power recovery mode i think its called, and clearing memory then rebooting and it worked fine, i was rooted and had the super user app as well (some boxes from widgets were invosible like accuweather and the android assistant thing but, thats ok).
ok next step i knew if i was supposed to try to flash a rom i should back up EFS which i did with some difficulty (such as figuring out i needed busybox lol)
ok now my next step was installing ROM manager by clockworkmods
NOW onto the actual part i need help with that i couldnt figure out myself (and excuse me for being newbish here too as i dont know much but im not bad with tech either but i felt i damn near bricked the phone in the process already so i WANT to continue with guidance before i do anything else)
now that im rooted, now that everythings backed up on my computer and ive got rommanager and everything
what now
will i still be rooted once i flash a rom? will i still have busy box, super user, all of that stuff? (as the thread i rooted with clearly said that was flashing a rooted rom)
and theres some other personalization questions i need help with too but thats more towards once ik what direction im going in
and uh.. not sure if it matters but im on metropcs service, so occasionally i get issues if i have to reset the phone at all as i have to change the ANP or ADP cant remember the acronym but ive got to change it from some t-mobile one to the metropcs one, i dont see why that would matter but, its a just in case emasure, also im using the ATT one not rodgers (not even sure what rodgers is tbh)
EDIT: OH one last thing. the rooted rom is gingerbread.. thats my main reason for wanting to change it.. i want kitkat, or would prefer kitkat, but id like some opinions as well on what perhaps the best ROM would be, im not sure between omni-rom and cyanogynmod which are the main ones im looking into, but, again, get more into that later
ok now
now im looking through the Rom info.. and.. im starting to wonder.. is it even worth it?
what sacrifices am i going to be making if i flash a custom? what all can i change without flashing a custom? and can i still get kitkat without screwing up my root (KIES?? or ODIN??) its just the things like this that make me wonder... i want the root, that much i DO know, theres so much i can do with rooting im seeing this and enjoying this, but i just need some type of guidance as to what to do, and if theres a better place for this thread please feel free to move it as i do see that it might be ok to have under general ndroid questions, but, i wasnt all too sure on it as this isthe phone im using so any issues deriving from the phone type might screw someone up
Most of the custom roms are rooted already.
There is only 4.0 official, no kitkat. We dont have odin custom images, nor KIES. You must wipe your data, system, boot parition, install KK means clean phone for you.
I think KK is better then official, but it has some limitation.

ok.. im confused then, cause i had kitkat on it when i used kies to update firmware, or atleast i thought i did, perhaps because both had 4 and i was sleepy i was confused lol, and sorry but if KK doesnt mean KitKat then what does it mean. and how high will a custom Rom take me in terms of lining up with official, just to ice cream sandwich?. and.. cyanogenmod, ive been tempted to get it but.. im not sure exactly which one to get because when i was on the site i only found captivate in the devices not captivate glide
EDIT: one more thing, as far as wiping the phone clean and starting over, what do i use.
and of course if you say the rest are rooted, then whats one of the best kernels and roms to use then, its true i want atleast ICS on here, so.. if im right i looked up KK, do you mean KKlauncher the app?
well...
ok i soft bricked my phone, it just shut down in middle of installing some fonts, and for some reason i cant restore it even tho i created a back up as it advised me to do so, i get errors in CWM recovery,
now im about to just do this
using this as a sort of reference so people can keep track of me if something else happens that i mess up..

I mean KK is kitkat. I dont know what did you read, but there is ICS the last official.
Cyanogenmod and other custom roms has own official support, that what you can download rom their site. We dont have official support from them, you cant download those roms from there. You can found download link in rom's threads.
Start reading here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2623635
I preffer CM11, but yon can found many other KK roms.
If you brick you randroid, just reinstall same you had.

hell i got it back on default ICS now lol, i screwed it up XD and yea ik you guys dont have the downloads your selves but the links and guidance of what i should be doing is basically what i was after ill look at the link you gave me, i think im going to chill out with the flashing right this second, but ill pick it back up later im sure, i atleast liked the cpu setting apps. made my battery last much longer and for what time it lasted i loved it
ok another thing im concerned with is alot have bugs that are deal breakers for me, such as messing up the keyboard (the whole reason i have this phone)
and looking through it i do like CM11 too
but looking at your post
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2588304
can you explain what you mean by the fixed rotation and skype issues,
and perhaps is there a full feature list somewhere? thats one big thing i want to look at if possible, i usually just keep seeing bug fixes on any ROM
Voip apps (skype, vibert etc) have strange sound, only temporaly fix exists.
When you take a picture with camera, it has fix rotation, I dont remember witch position is the fixed one, but you make photos with different rotation, the picture will be rotate 90/180/270, and you must fix the image.
Most importan bug are: phone call sound doesnt work with BT devices, and voip sound is buggy.

Flashed TWRP, installed rom + now have bizarro screen on/off issue

Hey gang, I just flashed twrp yesterday and was super excited to get rid of all the bloat and have a great 6.0 device. However, after flashing countless roms and wiping everything the screen flickers on and off and also half the time it wants to act like I have one of the cases with the cutout on the front. Any input will be extremely helpful as I really dont want to spend money on a new device. I cant even seem to find anything anywhere about flashing stock recovery and rom. Can find files but im certain there has to be some wonky utility we have to use on this phone. Thanks in advance and hope to hear from you guys soon!
-Andy
P.S. I have flashed the stock ww-2.20.4...... twrp rom this morning and im guessing this is some hardware issue but any input is helpful.

that's the thing. I flashed the stock rom through twrp and it persists. I've wiped everything before flashing also. I'm hoping someone has a guide on flashing the stock bootloader and rom as though it was factory. Couldn't really find anything other than a few files with 0 tutorial on what to use to flash it with. I know it cant be as easy as id like but if you've got any info on how to go about im willing to try anything.
