Information bar amazon fire stick - Fire TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I can't find any information anywhere about this so hoping someone here knows something about this. We have an Amazon fire stick. We have a 1 year old. At some point she must have pressed some button combination that's unknown to us. We've now got a bar on screen that lists hdmi mode, CPU load, memory usage and download speed. Any idea how to get rid of it? Cheers

I currently have the same thing displayed after our kids began playing games on the stick. No idea as to how to fix.

We got rid of it in the end by switching off at the plug....

Hold the select and down buttons for 5 seconds, then release and quickly press menu. A menu will pop up, turn off "System X-Ray"

Go to Settings.
Click through to "Device"
RESTART.
This will power down and automatically restart, cancelling whatever "order" your kids put in. It may cause a "ZOOM" effect when you restart, with a vivid yellow box around the screen...mine did.
To fix that: HOLD THE "BACK" AND "FF" BUTTON SIMULTANEOUSLY 5 SECONDS.
This is an old thread, but maybe, my input will help someone else. GOOD LUCK,

Ouya keeps turning on by itself

Everytime im done with my Ouya, I go to the main screen press Y and choose "turn off ouya". I know that the ouya shuts down because the input on my tv goes blank and says that no source have been found. Now when I try to turn on my ouya, lets say about 1.5 hours later my ouya is already turned on and is asking me to shut down.
Why is this happening to me? Am I not shutting down correctly?why does the ouya turn itself on?

Wish I could answer, but at least I'm glad to know I'm not the only one running into this issue. I'll do the exact same thing to shut down, and notice my TV's input still shows active, I'll switch back, and it's asking to shut down Ouya / Controller / Cancel. I'll do the shutdown again, and then wait for it to show No Signal on my monitor. I hope this will be also be addressed by a future update...
When you shut off with the menu options ouya is actually going to a low power sleep mode instead of turning off - similar to a android tablet or phone when you just push the power button or close a case cover, the next time you push it it is an instant on instead of a boot process.
Apparently it failing to stay asleep has something to do with the HDMI interface, though I can't technically confirm or deny this I do know it's entirely possible.
The only way I've found to actually shut it off is to either hold the power button for a few seconds until it shuts off, or pull the power plug (not recommended.)
Or root, install QuickReboot and shutdown with it...

I am facing the same issue. I did changed the HDMI cable with some other one. this is weird:cyclops:

This actually works. Thank you.
Hdmi activity wakes up OUYA, many TV's scan inputs so they don't list them in "source" menu and this turns OUYA back on. A poorly thought out feature.
Rather than doing a hard shut down, you can do a full shut down by holding the power button for a full second or two. You will then get an on screen prompt to confirm shut down, this will do a full shut down not just put it to sleep like it does when you use the controller to initiate it. Constantly killing power to a running system will probably start corrupting files at some point.
There is also some sort of sleep or screen or keep awake option in advanced settings that is supposed to disable the hdmi wake up.

Safe way to shutdown/power down Fire TV?

I used to turn off power for any unused devices, even it takes only few watt. There is no menu to shutdown and turn off fire TV before I cut its power. I'm wondering whether it is safe to cut its power at any time. Or it's not necessary to have a menu selection to shutdown system? Thanks.

It should be safe to just unplug, but if you use it often eventually it could cause a problem either in the firmware or the the connection itself. A simple solution would be something like a Woods wireless remote outlet. The one I have comes with 3 plugs and a remote with a switch for each. The plug can take a bit of room on the surge protector but so does the FTV power cord. I just press and hold the select and play buttons on the FTV remote for about 5 seconds and when the screen goes black I hit the power button for the outlet.

Get a Microsoft remote (MCE Remote). The power button on the MCE remote will put the firetv back to sleep. When you hit the power button again it turns back on, or hitting any button on the firetv remote.
I actually prefer the MCE remote because it offers more function when using XBMC and VIMU. I can actually time skip vs ffwd, hit stop, etc... Only complaint is there is no home button. The microsuck button does not take me home, and I have not figured out how to program it on the MCE remote.

As i've stated in another thread, "sleep" on this is pretty much the same as sleep on a regular android device. It's still fully awake, although the CPU might be downclocked a little.
As for home, you need F12 to get home.

I love low watt setups, so I know the mind set for the OP. It would have been nice to be able power off the device! I was told that lab126 felt the footprint was small enough in standby that it wasn't needed. They also wanted to be able to update when not in use, etc...
You could hook it up the ftv to a power strip. I've seen power strips that have one active outlet and shuts off the rest of the outlets when the primary device is not used. That could be another option?
Rbox- Do you know where the MCE remote values are stored in the FIreTV. I want to see if I can modify so the windows button is f12.

Since it shows up as a regular HID keyboard I don't think it has a keylayout file. What I do know, is that the kernel could probably do it. The HID layer has a quirks system that allows you do to funky stuff for individual HID devices. Do you know the usb vendor and device id for the remote? I can take a look at the quirks stuff tonight and see if we can do anything. It might have to wait until custom kernels can be loaded though.

I'm at work but I can pull the HID/Device info when i get home tonight. I will PM you the info, so we're not clogging the OP's thread.
It takes 3 to 4 watts to stream a movie - measured on a Kill a Watt meter. I forgot what the reading was on sleep mode but its not much. The max watts I've seen was 5 watts and that's while installing an app.

What gen is it? I heard old mce receivers don't work? My USB receiver is a Phillips/nxp. It came with my zotac mini pc.
I just got my fire TV, rooted and installed a few apps including the firedtv.
I left it over night and realized it never went into sleep (the front led was on). I was able to put into sleep using a keyboard, but I don't want to keep the keyboard near my fire tv all the time.
Do you guys know what is wrong?

Try rebooting your box and without loading any external apps, see if it goes to sleep after a certain time. My guest is that an app is still running in the background preventing sleep mode.
When I first installed XBMC that happened too. I found out that XBMC was still running in the background because I didn't properly exit the app. Clicking the home button on the remote just leaves XBMC running in the background. Exit by pressing XBMC power off button and setting the system power saving timer to shut down at a interval during idle works.

You can also set the power off setting in xbmc to exit after some idle time value.

Amazon Fire tv 2nd gen big issues after latest OS update

Hi all
My Fire tv box has started malfunctioning since the latest OS update. I am getting a message flash up about a new feature and then the screen goes black. Restarting doesn't help or doing the Amazon recommeded hard reset by pressing some buttons on the remote control. When i restart i get the Amazon Fire TV splash screen but then most of the time it goes to the black screen. Sometimes it comes up again with the info on the new features (something to do with Alexa) and then goes black. The only thing i can do is hold down the home button and then the screen comes up with 4 options with Apps, Sleep, Settings and one other thing. I can then go into my apps and use them. Any attempt to go back to the normal home screen brings the black screen
Anyone else had this issue? Spoke to Amazon cust service and they have tried troubleshooting and cant fix it. I have been told they cant help as i am out of warranty! So their update does this to my box and they cant help....terrible.
Hope someone can help...

try
Code:
adb shell am start -n com.amazon.tv.settings/.tv.FactoryResetActivity
I have the same issue, so watching this thread.
How do I issue the ADB command to a fire tv 2 box please? There is only a USB-A port.
Buy a USB A to A cable was the right answer. I have ordered one now, never had a reason to own one, till now.

Fire tv 2nd generation can't access home screen or settings

hello,
Thx to whoever will try to help in this topic.
i bought the the AFTV for 2 years and a half now i had trouble with the remote after six month of use and is not working with it at all so now i am using the App in my android phone or my TV remote to control it
that has been said now since 2 days i can't wake up my fire tv and have no access neither to home screen nor the settings
when i hit back nothing happen but the light showing that the box is responding to the button i pressed and when i hit home or settings nothing shows on tv but when i hold home screen for 5 secs i can see the menu showing Apps, Sleep, Mirroring and Settings. when i hit settings it turns back to the black screen and when i hit Apps it shows me all the apps installed and i can access them but when i hold home again and try to access setting again black screen
is there a way to fix this or how can i do a factory reset cuz i tried the combination back and right button for 10 secs but it doesnt show me anything so i can't be sure that i am really executing that task
please i need your help
also i am from canada and bought this when i was in US
Seems like none is interested in helping
Please can someone help
Try a different port? Try a different TV? Try a different cable? Report back after trying all 3.
Tried all 3 steps seems like the home screen and settings are missing
The only thing i can access is the apps
Fixed by putting back auto resolution si e erything turned normal i don't remember ever changing the resolution
Hi, how did you change the resolution if you couldn't access the settings?
If you hold BACK and REVERSE and RIGHT and SELECT simultaneously for 10 seconds, the Fire TV will begin to cycle through various resolution settings choose auto resolution.
I couldn't see settings and home screen they were always there but since resolution changed than i couldn't see them thought it was OS problem

Amazon Fire TV cube (2nd generation) STUCK in ANDROID RECOVERY mode

Hi
My Amazon Fire TV cube (2nd generation) has suddenly STUCK in "ANDROID RECOVERY MODE". (see image)
Fire cube has blue light circling.
Options to “factory reset” / (or) “try again” are displayed, but am unable to select either option to execute command via cube buttons or remote.
Holding mute and volume down buttons for 60 seconds does NOT reset/restart
Unplugging device from power for 10 minutes does NOT change boot up status.
I do have a 3 port USB / ethernet hub attached to the cube.
Any guidance would be appreciated

Were you using adoptable storage? Not merely external storage that is accessed independently from internal storage, but rather external storage media adopted to act like internal storage?

No. I never got a reply. Amazon were hopeless, too. They had absolutely NO CLUE what I was talking about. Now out of warranty after just over a year. I can't believe there is no fix, though. I've got a 3rd gen version, now. It seems that Amazon deliberately updated the software to make it inaccessible, forcing you to buy a new one . I'm sure the geeks will discover a fix, though.
I have a Fire TV stick with the same issue. It looks like Amazon is using a tablet bootloader that navigates menus using the device's physical buttons. However, the Fire TV Stick DOES NOT HAVE physical buttons. You may be able to navigate your Fire TV Cube using these buttons, located on the device itself.
Your device is a no recovery at this point. I had this 2 weeks ago. The physical buttons on the cube don't work in that menu, best I could do was to get it to highlight "Try Again" by pressing and holding volume down. I couldn't get it to successfully choose either of those options. I even tried with a physical keyboard plugged in, no luck.

Thanks for the suggestion. However the cube buttons do not function under these circumstances. There is no official solution to this at this moment in time. Keyboard via usb adapter doesn't work either.

Thanks for posting. Amazon have been hopeless, their chat ops. are hopeless. No clue about this issue. There told me it's "out of warranty" offered me a 15% discount off a new one. It been a real waste of money for such limited use. I guess that's how they make money. I've read they repeatedly update the OS to make it impossible to access it.
Hi not sure if this will help buy I had the same issue with firecube Gen 3 will trying to add external storage and to be honest I got it fixed but not sure how as I was throwing everything at the issue and hoping something would work.what I did do was to use a method for fixing a firestick that's in a bootloop I connected a usb keyboard to the cube and just kept pressing the key combo (ctrl+alt+printscreen+menu+I) repeatedly I took a while but eventually a screen came up that an image of a firecube with the words no command under it from there it rebooted. Again not sure how I got it done but it worked for me

Would you please quantify "a while"? Approximately for how long did you smash the "ctrl+alt+printscreen+menu+I" key combination? Which keyboard key is "menu"?
Hi it took me about 15 to 20 minutes of pressing the key combos I'm guessing you have to get the timing right I will include a link to a YouTube video which works for a firestick in a boot loop that's what I did to get my cube working again

And I should have said when I pressed the combo buttons I just held them for about 30 seconds to a minute if nothing happened I released and pressed them again
