My KF 1st automatically upgrade to the new version 6.3.1_user_4107920, so i lost my root status.
so i want to root again, i used Kindle Fire Utility 0.9.6,but it shows
ADB Status: Offline
Boot Status: Unknown
i am sure my driver is right, i have root the kf from version 6.2.2 to 6.3.1, and i have read all the thread ablout root and "Kindle Fire Utility 0.9.6"
but i still can't find the answer ,so have anyone can help me ? Thanks a lot!

Be sure that in your computer > Device Maanger > Kindle Fire is not marked with yellow triangle. This is the only reason it is not detected by the KFU 0.9.6 . It happened to me as well, but was able to re-root my kindle.

Trying to be as thorough as possible:
I am running a Kindle Fire with software version 6.3.1, which was previously rooted until software update. (Curse you Amazon!)
My computer has Windows 7 64bit
I downloaded adt-bundle-windows-x86_64 and ran SDK Manager.
Ran and closed Eclipse although I am not sure why or what to do with it.
Downloaded/installed:
Android SDK Tools
Android SDK Platform-tools
Android 4.2 and all attendant programs
All of the Extras including Google USB Driver.
Downloaded KFU v0.9.6.
Ran “install drivers” (Also omitted this step after uninstalling in subsequent attempts)
Ran “run.bat.”
In the cmd window that opens I get the KFU menu but under that is listed:
ADB Status: Offline
Boot Status: Unknown
I have also gotten:
ADB Status: Online
Boot Status: Unknown
This happens ad lib whenever it feels like it.
The Kindle never shows anything but the “You can now transfer files, etc” screen.
I have gone from the KFU menu to Bootmode Menu and chosen Normal (4000), as well as, Fastboot. It says “Oops...something went wrong. We are unable to locate your Kindle Fire. Make sure it is plugged in and powered on.” (It was.)
I have restarted both the Kindle Fire and the PC repeatedly. Uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers. Uninstalled/reinstalled the software that comes with SDK Manager.
Device Manager says under ADB Interface that it is Android Composite ADB Interface. Occasionally, however, I have had it listed further down the list as Kindle with the Yellow Error triangle and I have manually installed the drivers from there.
Note: I have also tried:
KindleFireRootNew631 which didn't work at all for me.
SuperOneClick v2.3.3.0 which tells me alternatively that my device appears to be already rooted, which is most definitely is not, and nothing...just kills ADB server and then starts ADB server and then....nada... Although the Windows circle thingie keeps circling, the task manager says it is “Not Responding”.
I have moved the USB port that I am using, always on one of the Mobo backplate USB's.
Changed cables.
Used a different computer.
Have resisted the urge to factory reset the device and/or break it in half!
If you can still transfer files, move everything you want off to your computer, then factory reset. Then try reinstalling drivers and running kfu

Have you tried using a factory reset cable ??? as they are different than a regular data cable .for my 1st gen kindle fire i used the factory cable that came with my first kindle black and white that used the e- ink without any problems whatsoever .you should be able to browse the forums to find one for sale i'm pretty sure you can also buy one straight from amazon

Hi, I have KFU installed to my C:\ and when I start with run.bat, it detects the kindle and says:
ADB: Online
Boot Status: Unknown
If I press option 2, then it says it is rebooting into fastboot, but reboots back to the normal kindle screen. The KFU just hangs on <waiting for device>.
I think its an issue with the drivers.
At the moment, I can get to a stage where there is something under "Android Device" which says "Android Composite ADB Interface". But there is also another device under "Portable Devices" that just says "Kindle". The SD card of the device shows up in My Computer and I can go into the folders. When I right click and update the driver for that to the ADB drivers, I then get 2 devices under "Android Device" and both says "Android Composite ADB Device".
Can anyone help me here? My device in Device Manager says it is USB/VID_1949&PID_000A&REV_0216&MI_01.
Is this the correct device for use with KFU?

Is your kindle a first gen? That would be my question. What system version is it?
When I go into Settings -> Device -> About, it tells me the System Version is: 10.2.4_user_xxxxxxx
How can I tell if its 1st gen or 2nd? I'm assuming 2nd gen cant be rooted?

You have a second generation device I`m just stating the facts live and learn. Rooting isnt to bad but there are no roms and a custom recovery is still sketchy this root method here works http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2075959. First start by uninstalling the driver you installed as it is pointless.
The kindle fire 2nd generations are not officially marked on the box and they look identical to a first gen that's why you need to check which version it is under devices in settings. Kindle fire first generation i think runs 6.0-6.3 also second generation kf's including the hd's have locked bootloaders. If you plan on doing any hacking to your kf other than rooting, aka running a custom rom i would suggest using a first gen kf as their bootloaders are unlocked and much easier to run custom roms and ui's on

Idealy, I would like to use KFU to root my kindle fire and then load jelly bean 4.2.x. I have tried some other tools to root too but so far no luck.
I mac available (10.7) and win7 64bit box avaiable (they main way I have tried.

Superlclick was able to root and set it to be able to use non store apps but still can't get KFU to interact with it right. I'm sure it's me, just not sure what I'm doing wrong .

Hello all and first off I'd like to start of by saying I did search to try and solve this problem but was unsuccessful. I did find one similar post but the person was using a different version of the utility so I made a new thread.
Anyways, I am trying to install TWRP on my Kindle Fire which is running system version 6.3.2 but each time I run the install divers batch file it fails. I uninstalled the default drivers that were showing up in device manager and tried again. I tried beating my head against the wall for 30 minutes and came back tried again and to my shock it still didn't work.
I tried running the batch file as administrator and it says "Windows cannot find '.\drivers\dpinsst64.exe'. Make sure you typed the named correctly, and try again'. I went into the drivers folder and dpinsst64.exe is there.
Here's all the details in a nutshell.
Kindle Fire (System Version 6.3.2)
Kindle Fire Utility v0.9.9
Windows 8 Pro 64-bit
So if any of you fine people could help me out I'd be much appreciative, thanks.

Hi All,
Today I should be picking up a KF2 (Kindle Fire 2nd Gen) today from a friend. And although I have experience with this device in the past, as I rooted one a while ago, and installed Google PlayStore bits and bobs for another friend... This was a while back.
A few months back, I read somewhere although cannot find it now... That Amazon have rolled out a serious Update to most Kindles (KF2, KF-HD, and possibally KF-HDX) that has updated the baseband/kernel to a certain version. Which prevents Unlocking, and tampering with it could cause the device to Hard Brick...
So was wondering, what is the best procedure to tackle this? Easy method to Root / Recovery??
And what does this 2nd BootLoader actually do?? Does it allow you to DualBoot both original stock Kindle firmware as well as second partition for Custom Roms??

OK first off which kindle do you have, because a kf2 is. Of a 2nd gen kfhd. If its a 2013 kindle fire HD, don't bother with second bootloader because it will just brick it. If it is in fact a kf2 then here's what second d bootloader does. Basically we can't unlock our devices bootloader so 2nd bootloader is a workaround. It allows us to run our own unsigned kernels and custom recovery. Once we have that we can flash a custom ROM like cm. And no no dual booting, Amazon's os is too different from cm to be able to.
To install 2nd bootloader + twrp you must be rooted, suggest kindle fire first aid for that, there's a tutorial in the dev section for kf2 for installing second bootloader + twrp here.
Make sure you check the md5sum of the bootloader before flashing it so you don't risk hard bricking, also I suggest putting the ROM and its gapps on the kindle ahead of time if your are running 10.4.8 because it will boot loop into recovery after the process until you flash a different rom, so its easier to have the ROM o. Ahead of time rather than "adb push" it.

Sorry for the delay getting back to you, my friend didnt bring the device in until yesterday...
I can confirm that it is a Kindle Fire 2nd Gen (Otter2), and it is running 10.4.6 firmware/baseband...
I tried to root it in work, on my Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 based PCs, and unfortunately it wasn't detecting it, or working with the ADB drivers....
I tried at home on my Windows XP and Vista setup, and again wasn't detecting it. However it did detect on my Windows 7 setup at home (triple boot). This must of been the partition I used for my friends one many months ago... (although I found various Kindle related files on each partition).
Anyway, I got the damn thing rooted now, thankfully... and shall move onto the 2nd Bootloader thing... However, is there any other way, or easy way of doing this other than whats in that post?? I don't mind doing it, and will follow it again. However late last night I was losing the will to live as it was hard work getting to do things... (compared to other Android devices that are a breeze to do...).
I tried to backup my partitions on the Kindle what it says to do at the start, and it kept saying it couldnt find these on the Kindle... I read in the guide that it said I could download them from a website, but all I could see was scripts and not backup partitions... Is it really important to backup my own ones, or could I just download someone else's Kindle Fire 2nd (8Gb) model??
And yeah, is there any other way to get custom recovery / rom on, other than the original guide...?? - not gonna give up, just last night kept falling asleep trying to follow it... when things werent working and patiently waiting for things to happen/work... lol

As far as i know offhand that method for the kf2 is the only method, which is kinda sad because its the same manual method as the other hd's, and the hd's have fireflash, but fireflash never had the support added in for the kf2 for some reason last i checked. I wouldn't worry too much about the backups, once you run the dd command on the partitions to store them on the sdcard folder, then even if adb pull doesn't work you can always copy them over mtp. i don't like how adb pull works on windows. Only image i would be concerned with storing is the boot0block.
If i made some incorrect references its probably because i vaguely remember it maybe having a different command than the hd model, but the hd's backup command would work on a kf2 as well.

Rooting KF2
Can you give a list of the links that you used to root you KF2?
I've tried to connect to my with ADB but I can't get it to see my device. I can connect my KF2 to my WINXP machine, and transfer files, but I can't get ADB to recognize the device, and I can't get any root options to work. Any help would be appreciated. Ultimately I would like to install a new ROM like CM, but until I can do the basics, I can't get that done.
You should check to see if it has the driver installed for adb in the device manager, if it doesn't even show up as a adb device in device manager you probably haven't turned USB debugging on on the kindle itself.

Checked and verified that USB debugging is in fact turned on on my kindle.
Settings>>Security>>Enable ADB is ON.
Settings>>Device>>Allow Installation of Applications is ON
I still can't get adb to recognize my device.
I installed ADB from adt-bundle-windows-x86-20140321.zip if that makes any difference.
I had read in the forums that I might need a special cable for fastboot. Is that what I'll need to get?

It was very helpful, and it was the first tutorial I've found that actually showed how to install adb windows drivers for the kindle fire.
In windows Device Manager >> Portable Devices >> Kindle is installed, then uninstall Kindle, as they are the wrong drivers.
In the SDK Manager
Go to TOOLS >> Manage Add On Sites
Go to the User Defined Sites tab
add the url found in the tutorial listed above, save and quit that window.
Back at the manager, do "Packages >> Reload" to update the list.
For the kindle fire 2nd generation, I had to expand "Android 4.0.3 (API 15) to find and install:
"Kindle Fire 2nd Generation"
Under Extras, install:
Amazon AVD Launcher (Windows)
Kindle Fire Device Deffinitions
Kindle Fire USB Driver
Once installed go to \extras\amazon\kindle_fire_usb_driver and run "KindleDrivers.exe"
You should then find "Device Manager >> Kindle Fire >> Android Cmposite ADB Interface"
You can then stop/start adb, then do a adb devices.
That is what worked for me!
