Backup apps - G4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello guys!
I recently had to send my G4 into service because of faulty motherboard ( issue with 505X devices ) and lost all my files except the photos I took ( because I had google photo to backup them ). Just to be safe, I am now searching for an app that lets me select all the folders which contain files that I need to be backed up ( no mater what kind of files there are in it ). In google backup, I found an option to add just one more folder ( which is not convenient ) but that will backup only videos and photos ( this isn't convenient either ) from that folder.
Do you know such an app that has what I need? I tried most of those popular ones ( mega, dropbox, mediafire etc. ) but none seems to fit my description.

bump?

Have you tried "Settings - Backup and restore" already on the phone?
How about PC apps such as LG Restore from the LG site?

I didn't find any setting to do what I said. The thing is that I need those files to be uploaded to a cloud automatically, as it does with the photos and videos. Copying those files by hand to pc anytime I get something new on the phone isn't an option.

You could use any of the Autosync apps for Google Drive, OneDrive or Dropbox (they're all on the Play Store) to sync those folders to cloud storage. Just so you know, you can't upload files bigger than 8MB unless you pay, but if you can, it's probably the best option.

[Q] Where is the File Manager?

Am I missing something? or is there no preinstalled File Manager?
Preinstalled apps, and google apps are the only apps allowed to write/edit to the miceSD card, so why wouldn't HTC install one?
Already regretting getting this phone, since I download a Lot of work files via my phone, and now I'm unable to move them from the downloads folder to the proper folder on the microSD.
Just downloaded one from Google play, loads to choose from.

Well I tried it, but that app, just like all the other ones on the play store do not let you move files from the phone memory to the microSD.
It won't let you Delete anything either...
All you can do is view the microSD. No writes can be made to it.
Android 4.4 won't let the apps do that anymore. (Unless rooted)

Yes the files on the microSD can be altered via the PC. But apps like airDroid won't work anymore.
Working all the go, I don't have time to stop to plug the phone up to the computer every time I need to move/rename/delete a file.

same boat here. I copy via USB2go all the time on my Note 3, and this is crippled for the M8. There's a work around, but you need to unlock the boot loader first, which for me is a pain, since it will reset the phone. I'm pretty OCD and it takes me some time to set everything up the way I like it. At this point, i'm just doing the PC transfer thing.

Google Drive saves any downloaded files to the internal memory, under the download folder. And there is no way to change where its saved to (that I know of)
It was just a poor choice of Google to disallow 3rd Party Apps from emaking changes to the external memory. They should have atleast
Made it a requirement for the manufacturer to include a file manager. Or Google them self should have. I understand they trying to push people to use Google Drive, but until data usage is free I won't used Google Drive to save nothing more than Google docs.

A google backed file manager with full write permissions would be awesome, but that would be going against what they are trying to accomplish.

Can't log into Google from HTC 10

Hi, a few weeks ago I tried to get a new app so went to my Google Play account and it wouldn't let me open it, kept asking me to log in. Anyway I eventually left it as it was driving me nuts but since then none of my apps will update and none of my Google accounts will backup, the most important one being my photos. I can't use Google to seach either. I can log in to my account on all other devices just not my phone. I also tried to connect my phone to my laptop to backup my photos as I'm thinking I'm going to have to do a hard reset but all my older photos were showing but not the newer ones that I have taken and you can view on my phone.
Can anyone help as this is driving me crazy.
Thanks

What are you using to view your files? A file explorer or HTC Sync Manager? I would use the former.
If that doesn't show all your stuff, then I would use TWRP to backup everything or to copy files onto an external SD card and then plug that into the computer to copy everything before running an RUU and resetting everything, which is what I would do.

Google Photos unlimited storage

With google photos free unlimited storage going away, I figure it is time to resurrect my old Pixel phone.
What's a good workflow/setup to be able to send photos to the phone to get uploaded?
I figure I can leave it plugged in and connected to WIFI. Have a samba share available that I can just dump photos into and then have it auto upload.
Did you ever end up setting up some workflow? I'm looking as well
Hi, I am running Syncthing on PC, Pixel and my primary phone.
On my primary phone the camera folder is marked as read only. So after I take a photo on my primary phone it uploads to Pixel -> and uploads to Google Photos. From time to time I run storage cleanup on the Pixel that deletes all uploaded photos from local storage but because of the syncthing settings won't delete photos on primary phone.
Btw it works nice in a way that Google Photos on my primary phone notice these files are uploaded on the servers so I can write comments, move into folders etc etc like it was uploaded from my primary phone.
I also have another folder "upload" that is synced between Pixel and PC that I use to upload photos from other sources (DSLR). This one is configured as two way sync so after it uploads and I run cleanup on Pixel it also deletes files in the folder in PC.
Did you figure out how to get it to backup all folders without asking if you want to add new folders?
I worked around this - in Total Commander I run command to show all files from subfolders (control+B) and then I copied all those files to one folder. Majority of files were copied OK but I had some files with already existing filename. For them Total Commander asked what to do (skip/rewrite..) under advanced was one option to automatically rename to filename(2...3...)....so i did this

All my music and pictures on my Xiaomi Mi 10T Lite is randomly removed all the time, how can I solve this?

I've a Xiaomi Mi 10T Lite, but all my music and pictures get randomly removed all the time and then I need to download them again.
I don't remove them myself for clarity.
I guess the cleaner app removes it but there is no option to add them to exceptions and there is also no option to turn off auto clean.
This is a very annoying problem and I'm tired to download all my music and pictures over and over again so how can I solve this?

Maybe your device has something like "storage manager" active?
Go into settings and then storage, see if you find something suspicious.
Uninstall or disable cleaning app... you really need to play with your device more.
That cleaner app sounds more like malware

I've found out that Cleaner is useless and is just a waste of space so I removed it.

Well If so, have a look at gdrives settings.
Also: Are gdrive files in another folder than those not being removed?
Could be malware... you know odd behavior.
The OS or an app may have been corrupted.
A factory reset be a good idea at this point.
Self destructing files aren't normal.
Is it just Google stuff that's vaporizing?
If so maybe deleting/recreating your Google account might solve it.
I'm leaning towards a full nuke of that OS though.
I don't trust Google with any of my data management other than Gmail. I backup and load everything from the SD card, flash stick and hdds.

True, could be malware.
A malware checking app would be a first step. If you can run adb on your computer you can check for modifications made on the file system (as you operate as "shell" instead of "root" (unless you are rooted) you won't be able to read everything. Actually you'll get "access denied" very often. But if you find system directories/files with another date then the 'standard recovery date' this could be a sign for malicous activity)

There's another possibility, a malware jpeg.
I ran into two in the last 15 years, one a year ago on my N10+. Downloaded from a site into the download folder it corrupted many files in that folder. Some only had damage to the file name and were easily repairable, some were not.
Deleted all I couldn't repair or was in doubt about especially the tainted jpeg.
If that jpeg would have been moved to another folder the same thing would have happened.
The only way to stop this type of malware is to find the infected jpeg. It may not show up on many or any virus/malware scans. I found this one because I noticed the damage immediately after viewing it in downloads. If one one these gets in your database they are little nightmare. One reason I keep downloads in the Download folder for examination, especially jpegs, are these little nasties.
Not real common but they're out there.

All my pictures are in the .jpg format
Create a folder in the root directory (not in any other folder) of your storage
In this folder create another two folders - one for music & one for pictures
Move all pictures & music to these folders
This will eliminate sync from apps deleting anything as they shouldn't have access to these folders
If they are still being deleted after this then the user is telling an app to delete them (intentionality or unintentionally)

Since you said you did a factory data reset there must be an app somewhere which is responsible for that.
I would check Google Drive – I don't even have a google account so I can't check it, but maybe GDrive is deleting files automatically.
Is it ONLY GDrive files being deleted?

If not you could try to move these things into another folder and see whether they will be deleted again or not.

Are you able to sideload the app?
You can download it directly from the WhatsApp site.
However, if it needs Google Play Services to work correctly, then you're probably out of luck, unless you have a custom recovery and can flash a GApps package.
AFAIK this should work:
- Create a local backup in Whatsapp
- Copy the WhatApp folder from your old phone to your new phone using a computer
- Install WhatsApp on your new phone and restore the backup

I tried this method, its described on whatsapp help page:
Restore from a local backup
If you want to use a local backup, you'll need to transfer the files to the phone using a computer, file explorer or SD Card.
To restore your backup:
Download a file manager app.
In the file manager app, navigate to your local storage or sdcard > WhatsApp > Databases. If your data isn't stored on an SD card, you might see "internal storage" or "main storage" instead. Copy the most recent backup file to the local storage's Databases folder of your new device.
Install and open WhatsApp, then verify your number.
Tap RESTORE when prompted to restore your chats and media from the local backup.
-----
But it doesn`t prompt me to restore from local backup, just google account.
That's strange. I remember I used it some years ago when Google Backup was not yet available.
Last time I installed WhatsApp I first copied the directory Internal Storage/Android/media/com.whatsapp to the new phone using MiXplorer. Then during installation everything was restored, with the exception of the messages of the current day. These I lost.

HEY. So I've found a good solution for this. On your huawei phone without google services, install GSPACE
. After that clone your whatsapp in gspace, open Whatsapp in gspace, then login there with your number. Local backup will be reckognized, accept it. Then go to your backup options in settings in the gspace whatsapp and backup to google drive. Then login on your new phone and use backup from google drive. I couldn't find that tutorial anywhere but it worked for me

there´s a more complex way
1- If you have access to huawei phone with GSM services ( P30 Pro or another one) you can use the phone clone app to copy whatsapp from your P40 pro to these device
2- After this you have to do a backup with google drive
3- From the huawei phone with GSM services you can copy the whatsapp folder to the new S22 and restore everything with any loose
