Right, here is what I have:
HTC 0ne M9 -Carrier is Bell
I have Venom Rom 3.5
SuperSU - verified root
S-ON
Bootloader Unlocked
TWRP- 2.8 but currently missing?
Phone doesn't want to boot into recovery after using suggested twrp method to upgrade to 3.0.
Have tried re-install in download + bootloader mode -nadda
Interestingly I can`t find the root portion when plugged into laptop (win7) but! can find it with solid explorer ( has a little lock icon beside it) suggesting it`s inaccessible?
Phone works fine....but I'd like new kit!!
Thanks all,
Colin :highfive:

Running supersu 2.65, will try twerp 2.9.
Thanks for the reply!
I has recovery! This means newer versions and m9's are not so compatible?
Anyone with a link for upgrading the Venom Rom with newest patches? Overall I'm trying to get Marshmallow loaded with the Venom Rom, any help would be appreciated!
Thanks all!
If you want to go from Lollipop to marshmallow you should have done that before rooting.
You need the official htc marshmallow update as a base then flash venom rom over the top of it.
S-on means you have to get the device back to official status before you can use an ruu or ota.
The quick and easy way is s-off.

I've had the device rooted for over 6 months now just about getting the updates and things. Will do the s-off to get the ball rolling again.

So I recently got myself an HTC One M8 Google Play Edition.
I tried to root it and unlocked the bootloader with ADB Commands.
Everything worked fine until I tried to install a custom firmware. It kept me in a bootloop and kept going back into TWRP Recovery.
I found out afterwards that my phone was still S ON.
For some reason, I was able to install Skydragon 3.0.1 custom rom for GPE and I finally got the phone working and usable again.
I thought that it was my chance to try and get S OFF with firewater.
Again, I tried doing so with ADB Command and I got the message that my device is patched by HTC, I am out of luck.
So now I'm stuck on Skydragon 3.0.1 rom. Not to say that it's a bad thing. The rom works GREAT!
But I want to revert back into stock rom and restart anew so I can maybe try and get S off from the beginning because SkyDragon has an OTA.
Apparently it's the OTA that is preventing me completely running firewater.
Is there any way to fix this? Can I still get S OFF from where I am or is there a way to go back to factory settings before all the rooting?
I haven't found any other roms that would install on my phone.
Please help!!!!! =(
Did you try installing an old 4.4.2 gpe ruu. You should be able to run it with son.

You're gonna have to use Sunshine and pay the $25 to get S-OFF, firewater won't work now it's been patched (the system, NOT the ROM btw)

Apparently the ROM has to be as stock as possible for it to work (I didn't have to as I used Firewater a few months ago when I first got my M8)

It says that I cannot run sunshine because of my kernel/rom combination. I need to flash a sense-based rom.
Problem is, when I read online, I saw that I cannot flash a sense-based rom onto an GPE because of the partition difference or something.
Thus why I wanted to get S-off
I'm on skydragon GPE v3.0.0 with SkyDragon V2.0.1 kernel by the way

I could find that in the htc dev website right? But if you could still send me the link so I can see if it's the same, it would be appreciated boss.

I'm helping a friend to mod his m8 , he has installed 4.4.3 OTA I know I can unlock the bootloader via HTC dev then custom recovery and wakesauce to gain su acess, but can I use firewater to SOFF the phone after installing 4.4.3 OTA , I have read somewhere HTC patched stuff and firewater does not work on 4.4.3 devices?
Please advise ...

You don't need HTCDev if you use SunShine, as SunShine gains S-Off AND unlocks the bootloader. Following this way HTC don't come to know that the device has been changed. Thus you would not have any problems regarding warranty

Yes but to flash AOSP/GPE ROMs could easily lead to problems if it is done wrong. For GPE as far as I know a conversion of the phone is needed, as the partition sizes are different. During this process the hole firmware has to be replaced by the GPE one with the black HBoot as well. So do carefully read the conversion threads if you are coming from a sense ROM!

The partitions are only altered if a full conversion (by RUU) is performed. GPE based custom ROMs will run fine with no conversion (no partition change or hboot change required); as will any AOSP ROMs.
My M9 is currently on 3.5.0 (5.1) I was thinking of getting 4.2.1 (6.0.x) but don't want to mess up.

It's s-off. I have installed TWRP, SuperSU Pro 2.49, ViperOne M9 3.5.0.
Update firmware to 3.xx version....
Your recovery is good...
Supersu is good....but will need to be reflashed after upgrade to 4.2.1....
Unless you are on Verizon ....then no 3.xx firmware exists until VZW sends an official OTA and somebody pulls it to share..
Sprint may be waiting too...I'm not sure on that one...g

He just need the proper firmware for his device, flash the rom, when reboot to system select do not flash for supersu in recovery.

Rooted my HTC m9 (unlocked the boot loader , flashed a custom twrp recovery, installed supersu through it) and I am still getting ota update. But when I try to install the update ( going from 5.1.1 to marshmallow ) the phone restarts and get into the recovery.
I tried to restore the nandroid I have made since I rooted the phone, and tried to update again, but still didn't work !
Actually the phone is working great but all the solution I tried to get back to stock , and take the ota update didn't work ( even with an RUU , which I may not have found the right one).
Below is a pic of the download mode

Please what do you mean by "official" status ,and how ?
And also if I buy s-off (using sunshine app) what next ?
Why on earth are you rooting if you don't know anything about it?.
Official means "as it was from factory" the device knows that it isn't as factory.
S-off means you can flash any rom and brick your device even quicker.

Well I forgot to say that I am a beginner.
Anyway, how can I get back to official status, I mean if It's still possible.
And what if I flash a custom rom, will I be able to get ota updates ( even unofficial)

You have to be 100% stock to take an ota. This is a security feature to prevent bricks, which can and have resulted from people trying to take otas when rooted.
There are multiple threads on how to do this. Start here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/one-m9/general/stock-nand-backup-ota-update-collection-t3132698

I guess as soon as I go s-off I will be able to flash any ruu therefore be 100% stock right?

Another thing,
After I have unlocked the boot loader, I did a twrp-backup .
So I don't need to download another one ,right ?
So long as you have the 4gb backup of system then you're golden. You can't do another until its stock stock stock because the partition is now modded!!.
S-off will help against bricks. You must still have the official status to flash a signed official stock rom but s-off isn't counted/seen. These are ruu.EXE
Otherwise yes, any rom except signed official while rooted with s-off. You can install unsigned "offical" stock roms and flash them straight away. No messing about resetting official. These are ruu.ZIP.

This needs some nuance. Being s-off will prevent you from getting into situations where you can't boot because of some security protocol, but can't fix the problem because you can't boot, for example if you relock in bootloader with a custom recovery but don't have "Allow OEM unlock" ticked in the OS.
But being s-off also opens up many other avenues for brickage that don't exist when s-on. A hard brick can be as simple as flashing a custom splash image for the wrong phone.

Got you now !
I just restored my twrp backup ( BTW it's 9.8gb not 4gb) it contains a backup of all the partitions.
Now, instead of going s-off and use ruu to get back to stock, is there another way for so ?
I recently got the phone and I absolutely love it to death. I've been browsing on the Android development threads and I keep seeing threads like this "[OTA ZIP+TWRP] HTC Desire Eye 2.19.401.1 STOCK Europe 5.0.2 Lollipop" and that worries me a bit. I bought this phone from AT&T and there seems to be only like 2 threads mentioning it. My question is exactly like the title, will ROMs titled "Europe" work on AT&T or are they both the exact same model and it's only the carrier differences?

If you are running stock lollipop right now, you can unlock your bootloader through HTC Dev, and flash a custom recovery. Then you can use almost any custom rom available for the desire eye.
However, if you want to flash stock RUU of another region (eg: European firmware), you need to have S-off which costs 25$

If you are running stock 4.4.4 and you are not rooted (and you don't have a custom recovery installed), you should be able to receive the OTA update to lollipop (check under software update)
There is a lollipop update available for the AT&T variant, so there shouldn't be any problems.
Achieving S-off (or security off) is only required for making changes that are not meant to be done by the average user. If you just want to try custom roms, you will be fine without it.

Okay, well done so far.
You don't need s-off, you only need to unlock your boot loader right now.
Visit this link:

Select your device (desire eye) and follow the instructions. Let me know if you had any questions.
After you unlocked your boot loader, you need a custom recovery, but that comes later. Unlock your boot loader first!

You can't really backup your apps without root access. Just backup your files to your computer. You will have to install and configure your apps again after unlocking your device and flashing a custom Rom.
