S7 v Note 5 - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note5

I played with the s7 and edge today at Best Buy. Wow. Beautiful and you can feel they are an evolution from the Note 5 and s6. I can't wait to see how they take that design and implement it into the Note 6.

I have a S7 Edge on pre-order... I can't wait!

I was at BestBuy today and played with the S7 and S7 Edge for a while. I was not impressed at all. The physical appearance is not much different than the S6. I compared it to my Note 5, and I just don't see significant different in performance. Perhaps, the S7 demo unit is not yet well polished? But, I don't see any reason to upgrade, let just say not worth the upgrade. At least not for me.
Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Not worth the upgrade from my Note 5, basically the S7 is a copy of Note 5 with just a few improvement, not saying that S7 is not good, i am sure it is, but to upgrade my Note 5, i will wait on Note 6 which will be way better then S7, or if not to impress on the Note 6, then I'll hold on to my Note 5 till next year for the Note 7.

I went to Best Buy today too.
What impressed me the most was how much smaller the S7 Edge is compared to my Note 5.
Yes, I know the screen is 0.2 smaller but the form factor and size was really nice.
The screen appeared a tad bit nicer on s7 Edge and definitely brighter.
Regardless not enough to upgrade for me. I'll keep the Note 5 for now.

Same. Just looking forward to the note6

I was gonna upgrade to the s7 edge, but decided against it after playing with an s6 edge plus. I just don't like the curved screen, distorts 1/4 inch on each side of the screen, and make it really hard to view things.
Neat design, but too annoying for me.

I agree. I reckon Samsung should create a zoom buttton, like Netflix has, that goes from full screen to just the 'flat' area. It would still look pretty good.

Well for any T-Mobile or Sprint on the S7 or S7 Edge, they finally locked there bootloaders, tightly locked down, no more root for those phone as well there fun in rooting are over, i knew this was gonna happen sooner or later, so now they are in the same boat as AT&T and Verizon is.

Yeah lots in T-Mobile Forum for S7 and S7 Edge are very pisted, Like i always said nothing lasts for long was a matter of time for it to happen to T-Mobile and Sprint.

My guess on the T-Mobile thing is that it is possible that Samsung Forced their hand. Samsung seems to be trying to take the route of better security screw the dev. community. Kinda disappointing really.
The only real difference I can see that the S7 phones add is adding back the ability to use external storage.
Looks like I will be looking for a different phone manufacturer next go round that isn't completely locked down and doesn't suck. Very disappointing though considering I like the Note series.

I always felt that skipping a generation on Sammy devices is always a better payoff if you can wait. S7 in silver is awful pretty though.

I have the S7 on Verizon and the Note 5 on AT&T. Nearly no difference besides MM and the always on time/date display. Cameras both are good. S7 a tad better in low light. Note 5 better color reproduction. MicroSD is preference just like the S pen. My note 5 is 64gb so not incredibly important to me. S7 Is more comfortable to hold since it's smaller. Still prefer the larger screen on my note 5.
My verdict is they're nearly the same phone in terms of agility. S7 is what the S6 should have been. Note 5 is still more professional in my book. Just depends on what your use cases are. I use remote desktop from MS and chrome remote desktop daily and the larger screen and S pen make all the difference. I do like the slightly curved glass edges on the display of the S7, which is the single thing I wish the Note 5 did have. I can tell you that you will miss your Note 5 within an hour of using the S7 Due to the smaller screen.
The Edge series is pure gimmick and a complete rip off in terms of pricing.

I couldn't decide so I got both. Damn you AT&T!!!!!!!!

What are you thinking about getting? I am torn between going back to an iPhone or finding an Android phone that can have bloatware removed and gets updates fast. It seems like you have to compromise on anything you do with Android when you get a carrier branded device.

That may be true on getting rid of bloatware but then you have to deal with AT&T, or another carrier, and Samsung, or another manufacturer, on getting updates for your device.

Note 4 or Note Edge

Hi everyone. I just wanted to make a thread and see how many people were jumping ship to the newer devices. And why?
Note 4? - Is it really worth the upgrade right now?
Note Edge? - Is the new curved edge display gonna be functional enough being that it is completely new tech?
I'd like this to be a spot where we can debate differences, pros, and cons. Really just looking for other people's input because I'm really torn between the Note 4 and Note Edge.
Also my Note 2 is still in perfect condition, runs great, and does everything I need it to still. So I'm also deciding if I really need to upgrade or not. Decisions, decisions ?????
Sorry if this is in the wrong spot.

I am making the jump. I think the edge will end up like the Mega forgotten about shortly after its release.

Thank you for your input ?
Right now the only selling point for me with the Edge is just that WOW factor when someone does see you have it they'll probably be like "woah what phone is that", because of the edge screen.
Sent from my SM-G900F using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Yea it has the wow factor. But they displayed the phone a year ago when they talked about the galaxy round which never made it to the U.S
I can't help myself...
I want a new phone every year. I know that some need to change even more often, but I get trapped into thinking I "need" the better screen, camera, etc. I love the Note product line. I've had all three. I have to say that the Note II was by far the best upgrade, so far. In fact, to be honest, going from the Note II to the Note 3 had as many downsides as upsides in my opinion. From my personal experience, the camera was not better - it had more features (mostly useless), but the autofocus did not function as well as the Note II. I had more blurry pictures on my Note 3 than ever on my Note II. You start to realize that once you get a good camera, the upgrade to higher MP isn't as important as having a good camera that just works. That was one of the letdowns I had with the Note 3. The other is battery life. First of all, the orignal Note had a horrible battery life and I thought that was just going to be the price of having for an enormous phone with a great screen. but the Note II solved that issue in spades! The upgrade to the Note II was worth it just for the battery life alone. The Note 3 on the other hand was a pretty serious downgrade in battery performance... at least from my experience. Which brings me to the topic of this thread (finally)...
I'm very concerned that the battery life will take a step backwards from the Note 3 to the Note 4. The screen on the Note 4 is unbelievable, but there is a price to pay in the battery. I find it crazy that the battery size was not bumped up to accomodate. I know they stated in their intro that it was something like 7% more battery efficient than the Note 3, but I don't think THEY even believed that, because it was just thrown in at the end. Instead they spent time talking about how they made it faster charging. I don't know about you, but I don't want to plug my phone in during the day, every day; even if it is only for 30 minutes for a quick charge. Battery life is just too important to me, as I learned from the original Note and I don't want to go backwards AGAIN. the Note Edge has an even slightly smaller battery and the extra screen that seems to have an "always-on" feature. I'm even more worried about that one.
Hmmm. Maybe I'll sell my Note 3 and buy a Note II and pretend that is my annual upgrade. HA!
FYI, last weekend, i saw the edge at best buy's on display on friday in san francisco. i went back on monday to see it again and it was removed.
Just setting up my edge right now, coming from n1, n2 and n3. Loved my n2 the best. Just got it a couple hours ago, but it's cool. Was going to get a n4 but they were out of stock.

I plan on getting the nexus 6 in a few months. I like the shape of it. Dual front facing speakers. Pure stock. I don't use the s-pen often. I have had the original note now the 2. I use straight talk prepaid AT&T Sim so the international 6 will be a perfect fit. And by February I may find one a llittle cheaper. I like the note series but the nexus 6 has the bigger screen and less crap and no TW. And I dont have to root it to have a pure stock android experience. I like the note 4 but I just like the N6 better.

[Q] Note 4 Same as Note Edge?

I have decided to drink the coolaid and dump AT&T and move to the dark side, being Verizon. Looking at their phones, I do like the look of the Note Edge. I cannot find anything on XDA about the Note Edge. I was just wondering if it is the same (other than the screen) hardware wise as the Note 4. My hope is that if they are so similar, something that works for the Note 4 will work for the Note Edge?? Or should I get the Note 4 and pretend I never saw the Edge?? Any help/advice?? Thanks!

ZERO chance of anything from the Note 4 working on the Edge and vice versa until they get root.
They are definitely not the same...there is another thread that confirms the edge cannot support simultaneous voice and data today...not until VoLTE. Deal breaker.
So I should go with the Note 4 then? If I decide to stay with Samsung??
I know root is not available for the Note 4, yet. But I am keeping my hopes high that it will be soon. That is, if I go with the Note 4.
I have been a Samsung fanboy since the Galaxy S, I have not even paid attention to other manufactures. What would someone suggest that IS root capable that is similar to the Note 4? Anything?

Nothing available from Verizon, I'm pretty sure the S5 and M8 are your only choices for rootable retail phones. If you want root with the Note 4 you will have to buy a developer edition directly from Samsung for about $700.00. If you go thru Verizon the choice would be what features you like more with the Edge or Note 4. I'm sure the data and voice thing will be fixed with the Edge, it's just a matter of time. No root is available for either but it seems the Note 4 is getting more attention in that respect. I don't like the sidebar on the Edge but that's my personal taste.

the LG G3 is also "unlockable" and rootable. With a 5.5" QHD display it's probably the closest to the Note 4 in specs, but LG's are different animals than Samungs. I actually am selling my G3 to get a Note 4 DE.
To throw a whole other wrench in your decision. If your considering the Dev N4 but really like the Edge... Well Samsung has a -coming soon- page for Edge Dev Edition. So that might hit the market soon.
Only bad thing I have read about the developer edition is only a 30 day warranty or none if you change any of the factory settings.
Well, I did it. I took the wife into Verizon today and switched from AT&T to Verizon. My wife got the Apple Iphone 6 and I got the Samsung Note 4. Although, since they did not have the colors we wanted (black) we have to wait until next week before we can actually switch.
That said, I decided that I did not like the Note Edge, is it not an upgrade from the 4... move of a side shuffle. The side screen, bar thing, is gimicky and I dont think I would see a use for it.
I just hope now, that root comes soon for the Note 4, as this will be the first time I have actually used a STOCK phone since the S1. Thank you to all!!

Just curious.. Who's updating to note 7??

Just for convo.. Thx
I'm on the fence, but I'm leaning towards a No.
I'll tell you why:
1. It's smaller then my Note 5 (while the difference isn't big on paper, its big in hand.. and to be honest after Note 5 and realizing how much more screen real estate = more use/functionality/video/beauty, I now want a BIGGER screen vs smaller)
2. Only 3500 mah battery, really? for a screen that size.. I know I know.. its the stylist, but still .. what do I use more often.. a stylist or extra day of battery?.. Battery wins
3. It's expensive as hell and really has the same guts as S7 Edge.. so no bragging rights that its so much better
Note 7 alternatives I'm keeping my eye on:
1. Huawei Note 8 - 6.6 inches
2. Huawei Mate 8 - 6 inches
Why, so we can be locked out again. I am hoping for a bad ass nexus to drop

The Huawei Mate 8 display has only 1080x1920 resolution. The Huawei Note 8 display will have the same resolution as the Note5/7 (2560x1440), but at 6.6" it will be almost as large as my 7" tablet, which is good for many purposes but I would not want to carry it in my pocket.
I am, but I'm a sucker every year. It's just a bad habit at this point.
Honestly, though, the removable storage is the biggest reason. There's no way I'm going to ever use the iris scanner - it's four steps more than using thumbprint. But, I applaud the innovation!

I personally went yesterday for the fun of it to check the note 7 at my local AT&T store and guess what ? My note 5 can dance in circles around it. Hated the edge and in all honesty it feels like an S7 edge with the pen in it. Nothing special and all the new features that they keep talking about can be easily implemented with a software update. So unless I get the nicer beefier version from China I'm going to pass and that always on display in ran into an app that works perfect with my note 5. And it's not that glance one.

Not so Bad Rumor about The Note Brand... Opinions?

I just read this article claiming, according to an Anonymous source, that Samsung may ditch the Note series, BUT may release a "plus" version of the S8 as a "Phablet variant" with a 5.5 inch 4k screen, dual camera and a Stylus.
IMO, that would be even better. It's like having a Note 8 sooner than expected. Who cares about the name. Galaxy S8 plus with a stylus and 4k screen. Yeah cool, whatever...
What you say dudes?
Original article:
http://bgr.com/2016/10/13/galaxy-s8-plus-rumors/
while I would love to see the yearly release cycle make a come back, I don't see it as likely as them selling a new phone every 6 months helps smooth out their profit margins.
I see this as more likely just wishful thinking.

They could literally put out this phone a year from now with no danger of blowing up and call It the note 8 and id be ecstatic. This phone is perfect, so of course it's got troubles.
It would be dumb for samsung to ditch the Note line, people aren't associating the Note with explosions as much as they're associating Samsung with explosions, dropping the Note isn't gonna help.
With that said I dont care about the name, even though "Note" works perfect. But just "Plus" ... eh and 5.5"? No thanks.
The Note 7 is perfect in and out, make this phone again!

few days before they'd went all "february launch".
But now there are fresh news about a later launch like this site:
https://article.wn.com/view/2016/10/13/Forget_an_early_Galaxy_S8_launch_Samsung_is_busy_making_more/
Makes sense that if they gonna go S8 and S8 Phablet with sylus, it will be way better for them to push the launch to around May.
- They need to find out what happened with the Batteries of the Note 7
- Fix it and find a solution to incorporate more power without issues.
- And of course it's wiser for Samsung to not rush into a launch they may not be able to handle.
So if you'd ask me, and if what's in the OP legit, then I'd say expect a May/June Launch.

Would you buy next years Samsung Phones without the S-Pen?

Ok, here's the deal. The reason I purchased the Note 7 was the S-Pen. All the other features like VR came along nicely, but to be frank, the real incentive for me was the Pen. Without it, I wouldn't give so much money for a phone. 4k VR? Rather wait for any other cheaper phone to catch up to 4k VR like maybe the google pixel or one plus 5 or something...
Since we are in the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 forums and not the S7 or S7 Edge forums, it means that you guys reading this opted to wait a few months to get the Note 7 specifically instead the S7 or S7 Edge. So, I figured that maybe these guys here are also hooked on the S Pen.
Thus the following question...

Yea. The pen wasn't the issue with the Note 7s. But just saying I think people are curious if that's a do or don't cutoff point for some people. I thought I'd have a lot of issues with this s7 edge after being an avid note user the past few years. I've been fine actually. Now, of course I'd love a pen again but for now this works.

For sure. It's why I'm back to Note 5. There is no way to effectively take lengthy notes during meetings for me. I tried using deterrent capacitive styli, but it just didn't work.
I'm hooked on my s-pen. I will say at least the Note 7 tips feel really nice in my Note 5 stylus.
No
I don't use the S-Pen all that much actually. So the next Samsung phone without the stylus is definitely an option.
That said, I'm also not a Samsung loyalist. I've had my hands on several smartphone brands, starting with HTC, Motorola, Xiaomi and Sony. And I've never gave LG a go, so I'm getting the V20 next.
I just won't get an Apple. Android's flexibility in file management is just too damn good for me to use iPhone as my daily driver.
no, I want the pen and slightly bigger screen without the useless curves.
If it was at least 5.7 screen, IP68 and coral blue then yes, reluctantly. Would greatly prefer it with the s-pen.
I'm not buying the s8 without an s pen. There are too many good and cheaper alternatives. The OnePlus3, the up coming Mate9, why spend lots on phones that have no major differentiator (which the note series was).
Without S-pen, I would look elsewhere. Many a phone out there without the premium pricing and good specs.

I'm not quite sure why anyone would pay for a note and NOT get the stylus it is the biggest factor that separates the Note from the S series.
The answer is no; if there is never another stylus phone (very unlikely) I will probably stick to LG. Removable battery and external memory on every model? Yes please. Allows me to get batteries beyond factory capacities.
Removable battery means no planned obsolescence (which is exactly why manufacturers put in the non removable design to push you to upgrade when the battery dies).
