Assuming others have been testing betas and things.. Any showstopping issues ??
Any reason not to update my network of AFTVs to Kodi 16 ??
I updated my AFTV1 to Kodi 16, and it works great - especially since I was able to keep my settings and add ons. On some ways, it now works better than my Shield TV running Kodi 16
Thanks.. Think I am going to scrub everything and start a fresh build..
To backup and push around the net.. Every so often the buildup of old add ons worth clearing.
It seems great so far, was told it is faster than 15.2 & all seems good only thing I've noticed is every now & then my splash screen plays on a add on background? Which is weird haha, & every now & then It might lag when switching though the menu's
I upgraded from v14 to v16, and it is a noticeable speed increase. I actually enjoy the AFTV a lot more now than my Shield TV (partially due to the faster remote with more buttons), and v16 seems faster on the AFTV1.

i am going to need to set up another house with multiple boxes and having looked about.. I think I will just use AFTVs there too, for the same reason, I like the remote and has about the right amount of buttons.
Just need a whole batch of sideclicks.
If you have multiple AFTV boxes (I am glad you don't want those sticks), set one up, make a backup, and restore them on the other boxes.

Thats what I have been doing.. But actually the caching of local thumbs makes that a slower operation now.. If I could do backups minus the images, that would be fine..
I have my database as a mySQL on the network.. Which I assume holds the thumbs again ?? Its a couple of GB..
I actually find it easier to back up my sources.xml and advancedsettings.xml and remote profile.. And simply install a new kodi and push those 3 files.. Allowing it to then pull the images in to each box without the backing them up and restoring them.
@phat Phredy,
How did you set up your MySQL server? I want to be able to have all my add ons, settings, and even offline collection in sync with all my Kodi boxes (2 AFTV's, 1 Shield TV, and an Android/Windows tablet).
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N910A using Tapatalk
I did a little howto.. I use KSWEB server, running on one AFTV, as my mysql host..
http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=221540
Its actually not that ideal, my DB is now 3 something GB, almost filling the AFTV, and for some reason the AFTVs update the box ID much more than android boxes do causing me to need to get new reg keys. Its not been enough of a pain to solve another way yet, but it isnt the perfect do it once and forget.
Hmmm...I will have to check that out. I wanna set up a really small PC (like a USFF optiplex due to its small footprint, it is quiet, and has much more storage) as a MySQL/PVR backend. Do I have to have Kodi running on the server to be a MySQL server?
Kodi runs the client side..
You will just need to install a MYSQL server and create the database with username and password.. then push the advancedsettings.xml with those details over to each kodi box.
Could I possibly set this up on my Shield TV? Also, could I possibly set it up to use storage from a USB stick or SD card?

Is the only reason to root a fire tv to install a custom ROM. Will XBMC still run on a un-rooted device
I have a device that is rooted and only use it for XBMC. Last week it locked up. Going to send it in but they will probably install the latest firmware on it. Thats OK as long as I can still install and use XBMC
Thanks Rick
Lots of reasons to root but no you don't need it for xbmc.
typically rooting only give you access to customizing the actual OS and running certain apps (like openvpn). to use xbmc and 99% of apps, you do not need root..
Rooting ftv
Is is true that if you dont root, Amazons updates can brick your device so you cants use XBMC anymore?
Rooting is keeping your options open for the future.
1. If XBMC or sideloading is ever blocked by Amazon by future updates then rooting w/recovery installed gives you a chance to block the Amazon update.
2. Rooting allow use of USB external hard drive for storage of media with access via xbmc.
3. Possible custom rom in the future. It would be nice to get Android TV onto this box.
4. Root allows you to use an external SSD to essentially replace the 8gb storage and put a lot of games/apps on the Firetv.
5. Allows you to put on a cleaned up Amazon update that could close up the possibility of sideloading.
To add to the above list for me the most needed are.
1. Quick support from google play. You need root for live desktop/remote view. I can support my friends and family remotely.
2. Emulators from google play which needs to be purchased.
3. Change the icon to Kodi.
4. Upcoming custom rom of android TV.
5. Removal of Amazon enforced menu items.
plus the others mentioned such as USB drives.

Are you sure. I try adbfire on non rooted ones and change of icone does not take effect. I always thought it was a rooted feature. That's good to know.
By the way bestbuys in LA now have the latest non rooted versions. Its sad.
There should be a new way to root. these devices are getting scarce by the day. I always have people come up to me and ask if I can make them one, and I direct them to find a correct piece.
Amazon can't stop you from using Kodi (at the moment).

I still haven't seen the need to expand my storage beyond native. I have kodi with a library of about 200 movies and google play and a few apps. haven't seen the need for additional space . One point to note here is that I did recover about 2 GB of my lost space by running a google play software called SDMaid Pro. That scans for orphan files that are not required and cleans up space. Costs about 2.50. That again needs root for google play.

I'm always having to delete apps to make room for others.. it's a pain
I have a few large-ish games like Game of Thrones, The Wolf Among Us (with all episodes it takes up a lot of space)

Oh maybe then. I'm not into playing games. the only games i have is the emulators like md.emu for sega or mame etc. those are really small. If your into games then yes 8gb can be a limitation. Also give SDmaid a shot. you'll need google play to get the pro version that matches orphans and recovers lost space. I got 2 gb back which is a good thing with a space strapped storage.
The day I need to expand the storage which I may need as I have about 1.5 gb remaining. I'll look around as to which script to use. i believe by expanding, the firetv bootup becomes slow. I also got a usb 2.0 hub during the black friday sale from staples for 2 bucks. I didn't know what to buy then so got the hub. Its targus and still packed.

thanks I've seen that in the past. I will try that when needed but for now I'm ok with the internal storage. I plan to buy the m.2 ssd and put it in an enclosure when I'm ready.
I didn't want to open a thread just to post this but what are the cons of an unlocked bootloader. I'm already rooted with the playstore installed but why would or should I unlock my bootloader?
So wait, are amazon planning on blocking sideloading apps? Where has this info came from? I don't yet have a fire tv but if they are gonna block sideloading, I'll spend my £70 elsewhere. Not a single chance I'd be subscribing to prime or anything like that.

no one knows. And if you are still contemplating, you probably have missed out on the rootable ones. However if you are in the UK, that is a no go anyways unless you go through the hardware root. I highly doubt Amazon will disable sideloading, however there is no telling what they will do eventually. If you are rooted and update blocked, then you can always use your device the way you want.
PS: Lots of us have extra's for the rainy day ! Its a super fun toy to play with. Unlocator, Streaming. I'd say go for it. Its given me hours of tinkering around fun.
As I've said on many other occasions, they can't disable sideloading. That is, as long as they expect people to still develop apps for the Fire TV.
I have always rooted my phones, like the flexibility.
But the FireTV needs to be wife friendly, what are some of the benefits of rooting this device?
What are the reasons for rooting any device? Same here
I was looking for example's... On my phone backing up apps is important. I can think of no reason to back up an app I would be using on fire TV.
I was hoping for examples of things that can be done on a rooted FireTV that can not be done on a non-rooted one.
Thanks

Well, since the last update i feel like im using less root features but im definetly not one to advocate factory resetting (unrooting) You just dont know if there will be something you need in the future & imo you forfeit control to amazon if you unroot or choose not to root when you can.
I might want to flash a custom rom. Thats probably the best reason i can think of to keep root. As far as "wife friendliness" from my personal experience youre looking at apple tv 3, but skills vary from person to person. Theres really nothing about my rooted aftv that differs from stock as far as basic user experiences.

1- A true Kodi launcher is probably the best feature that also provides access to Amazon content. Never have to see that wretched Fire TV home screen unless wanting to access Amazon content.
2- The ability to have usage of USB external storage above and beyond what Amazon is now offering.
3- The ability to add the Google Play Store to the Fire TV.
I'm sure there are even more reasons for rooting a Fire TV. With root this device is no longer Amazon centric and I prefer it to be just this way.
A few of the obvious ones:
- Mount NTFS usb drives with StickMount
- Full control of the FireTV (edit hosts file, run custom scripts etc...)
- Custom Recovery menu
- Custom bootmenu
- Custom Roms (CyanogenMod, possibly CentOS etc... in the future)
- Ability to downgrade to older firmware versions
- Ability to re-add any features amazon remove in future
You basically have absolute control of the device and can do with it what you like. It's not a requirement for the FireTV to be a great device, but I think it rooted AFTV is worth 10x a non rooted device, but that's just me

I have one fire tv rooted and one non rooted. On the rooted fire tv I have a 128 gig ssd connected to my fire tv, so I can install pretty much as many games as I would like. Although the new firmware allows the use of usb drives it is still limited. An example is Asphalt 8 will only put the basic app on the usb drive not the 1.4 gig data. I can backup my entire fire tv not just apps. So once I have everything the way I like I can protect that setup with a backup. I am using Squarehome tablet and it is very customizable if you have root. It works without but some important features like themes don't work as well without root. I can customize Squarehome and make my home screen look like whatever I want. I can have some of my favorite apps or all my apps on the home screen, and I can have them with tabs such as Games, Entertainment, System, Video or whatever. I don't have to worry about SPMC or Kodi running out of space, or creating an xml file to move thumbnails etc. I can connect my PS3 controller using sixaxis which I believe requires root. I don't have to buy amazon's controller for $40. With root I can use wallpapers and themes on whatever launcher I'm using. No one has to root their fire tv but once you do you'll see many benefits. It becomes your device and not Amazon's where all you can do is buy their movies games and apps.
Really the only reason having mine is rooted is beneficial is that it boots right into Kodi.

NTFS is apparently the ONLY file system that the FTV/latest pre-rooted firmware does not mess with. (This was driving me crazy.) If you are running OSX you can follow this excellent video on how to enable read/write NTFS on your Mac: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R-2NCRcylK0
I've been using Stick Mount Pro from day 1 of root. Had a few issues mounting every now and then, but it's been working flawlessly the last few releases.

I use root mainly for quicksupport to help my family and friends. You cannot do that without rooting and google play is needed to buy emulators that work very well on the firetv. Expanding basic storage it around the horizon for me as my space is getting very limited.

If I may resurrect this old thread, I have a few questions about how specifically some of these feats are accomplished:
1. How specifically does root allow one to work around the problem of games like Asphalt 8 insisting on keeping its large amount of data on internal storage?
2. What tool do you use for doing a full Fire TV backup?
3. This might be related to number 1, but how specifically do you keep Kodi/SPMC from burning up all the local storage without resorting to the custom xml to move thumbnails, etc. route? (I never could get that technique to work anyway).

Hi guys
I have ordered a fire TV stick which should be here today for the upstairs TV and wondered what version of kodi runs best and what everyone else running? I use an Intel nuc as my main kodi device with version 15 beta 1 and that works really well. I did previously have an Amazon fire TV a few months ago and ran spmc. Is spmc still the one to go for?
Cheers

Some swear by spmc (latest) and some will say there's really no reason anymore to use spmc on android devices. You'll get different answers. I don't use my ftvs that much but tried both and honestly they both worked fine for me.
You know you can install both, right? So maybe setup helix and spmc (haven't tried isengard but I'd wait on that) then judge for yourself.
Btw--mine is running helix 14.2 and I'm not experiencing issues but your results could be different.
Thanks KLit75
I installed spmc in the end. It works well just cannot get it to show up in recent apps using the guide on here. Weirdly it showed up okay on my fire TV just won't on the stick.

Yeah I tried syncing and unsyncing lots of times but it just would not show up. I also tried deleting spmc from my amazon account and then buying it again. Could it be that I have spmc 14.2 installed and the version on the Amazon app store is a different version?

Are they different? If so that might be the reason. I use llama through adbfire. It accomplishes the same thing and its easy.
The one on the app store is version 13.4.0. Or so it says on the Amazon page.
Yes I am using llama as well now. I have it set to load instead of ikonoTV and have replaced the icon with spmc. Works really well
Dont use Kodi, use SPMC. Its the same exact app however i hae never experienced an ounce of buffering or any other bugs using it. Its in the play store and ull have to sideload it obviously but if u want a bug free xbmc experience thats the way to go

Thanks. I saw that and copied your files just in case, but I didn't end up needing them. I loaded the latest SPMC on and it opened just fine. I even got it to sync with Amazon and show up on my recent apps section without any issues. Unfortunately I also found that my Fire TV Stick is a piece of crap and won't stay connected to my network so I couldn't really test out how it plays.
I suspect most of the issues I've been having with Kodi stem from the Stick's inability to stay connected to my router. Last night it was so bad it wasn't even usable. It couldn't even get into the settings without it fighting me since they are locked with a pin that needs to verified via Amazon and it couldn't stay connected to get the verification. I contacted Amazon support and they are sending me a replacement due to arrive tomorrow. Hopefully it will work properly.

For 5 days I've been running isengard. Made the switch because it's compatible with fire TV skin
http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=207475
For an alpha skin, it sure hasn't been acting like it. I've had no serious problems. Occasionally it will crash on launch. I fix this by clearing cache just once. (For some reason I find if I try to hit clear cache more than one time it won't launch. But that's really common.
You also might want to rethink your setup. I install addon installer and only get the addons I use.

Hey guys I'm new to the fire TV I know kodi is useful and I've installed that on the current firestick I have that I'm playing around with but I bought 3 more with voice to give to my sisters and my brother for Christmas.
So my question is what's the best mods or apps or add ons to use for these? I have no clue how to customize kodi yet I've seen Firestarter didn't know if that is the best to open to kodi with.
Pretty much my siblings aren't very tech smart so I need something I know will be easy and do a good job
Thanks in advance guys
Also is there anything to make setting up 3 or 4 of these easier or quicker?
Best thing to is -
1. Set up one Kodi unit how you want it (settings, addons, addon locations on the main menu, splashscreen, backgrounds) once it's perfect move onto step 2
2. Install USB Sd card Wizard, it's on the Xfinity Repo (source - http://www.xunitytalk.com/xfinity)
3. Open the configuration in the USB Sd card Wizard & make a location on your fire Tvs storage
4. Backup with the Usb wizard (do a full backup)
5. Transfer the new backup & any background pictures you want to your laptop/pc you can do this with FTP/ADB/ADB Fire or ES File Explorer
6. Follow step 2 & then step 3 on your new Fire Tv
7. Push the backup & background pictures to the new Fire Tv
8. Now do a restore & restore the backup
9. If it is not fully the same as the original stick or device then restore it again (sometimes It takes two times before everything shows up)
10. Now close Kodi & or reboot when it's finished (if it freezes on a 100% just reboot with the select & play/pause buttons held down for about 6seconds
11. Voila a exactly the same Fire Tv unit with all settings & backgrounds the lot
12. Repeat for the other units
If this helped press that thanks button

Thanks for the info once again. You've been a great help I love this place because everyone is so helpful, I haven't modded anything after my old Motorola Droid x2. But I remember back then all of us trying to figure things out and helping each other.
Also not sure how this app works with notifications but I'm going to send you a pm as soon as I post this. Got a question that isn't general.
I was hoping someone can help me out. I have been running Fire TV boxes now for a little over a month and have enjoyed the use of KODI. Over the past couple days I have been reading about SPMC. As i understand it, Android development for KODI as we know will cease as this point? And SPMC will basically continue forward? I did install it on one of my fire tvs. The only thing I'm missing is a way to back it up. Running 4 firetvs, I use one to try out new addons and then will backup that one every week or so and push the backup to the other tvs. How does that work using ABDFIRE . Does it only backup the actual Kodi app on the firetv? And not SPMC? Or is there something else to use instead? Thanks in advance.

Haven't been following the SPMC business but I don't think its anything to worry about.
If the Kodi foundation want to continue the Android side of things then I'm sure they will find another dev. Or another dev will find them.
As for SPMC its still 'Kodi' but has some additional fixes for certain chips/things that the official codebase doesn't have.
As for backing up, how do you do it?
If you use Titanium then the package name is different so I don't know if there's a way to transfer them across.
If you use a plugin from within Kodi the you should't have any issues restoring from the backup.
I use it to backup to a share from which I can restore to any Kodi install around the house etc.
I don't use/like/trust backing up through adb. Had issues with it a while back that left a bitter taste...

SPMC v16 has a different signature than SPMC v15 and because of this install itself in a different directory name. ADBFIRE needs to be updated to pull it from correct directory, once developer updates it you will be able to back it up. BTW if you wish you can copy this directory manually in the mean time.

In adbFire, the package name for SPMC needs to be changed, you just need to add 16 to the end and click on save, if you go to the adbFire google help page its listed on there.
