Kingroot Firestick question OS 5.0.5 (Purify?) - Fire TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I see different post regarding success rooting with Kingroot but are you clicking Purify 'Try it' button when you slide the screen up? I don't see a way around it and I assume you may be able to uninstall it afterward but it seems even more sketchy forcing you to install as part of the root process. It also seems to require a bluetooth mouse on the fire stick as I couldn't get the screen to slide up using a gamepad, keyboard, or the default remote. I am wondering if I downloaded a version that isn't legit?

looks like the legit version
I used the version you're describing.
I didn't know any way around 'purify' and clicked the 'Try it'-Button with a mouse.
For me it's no big deal, because you can use the in kingroot integrated bloatware-uninstall-tool (irony? ) to remove purify after a successful root.
The lack of an option to control the app with the remote and the missing landscape mode (especially of the root-granting-prompts) are more annoying. Maybe i'm trying any of the guides out there to replace it with SuperSu.

The thread on XDA has a version of 4.1 attached, I haven't been able to test it as I don't have 5.0.5 yet on the firetv stick, but it looks like that one doesn't need a mouse from other posts:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/one-click-root-tool-android-2-x-5-0-t3107461
it does connect to the internet to download the root for your device on the fly, that is a large thread on XDA though if you want to learn more about kingroot itself

Is it safe to uninstall? The purify app?

I think so. I didn't run into problems so far.
But the next time you start Kingroot manually (NOT the superuser prompts!), it checks for purify and you have to 'try it' / install it again.

Could you not install Super Su for the prompt?
I know there is an app called Super Sume Pro which claims to uninstall the king root & purify & leave Super Su in its place but some have been left with problems booting afterwards & some have had success with it

No I'm not!
I'm a bit careful at the moment... Afraid to brick it w/o recovery.

I have 3 fire sticks on beta firmware how do I put them on 5.0.5?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I rooted using the latest king root from their site. I had a bluetooth mouse and keyboard to swipe but it was invisible in some parts of the app. I also noticed it was having trouble with landscape mode but I had that problem solved because I already had this app installed which does forced landscape mode ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2331514 )
I was tempted to use the supersu-me app from the playstore but I also read in the app descriptions how some people had issues and were bricked. I did install the supsu.apk file and it was granted root. I installed flashfire but it would not run because it requires supersu. (probably because the supersu binaries were not installed) I'm gonna sit and wait a little bit cause I figure it's just a matter of time till we get a full process. I did disable ota updates. and the amazon keyboard which was nice. along with adaway. Next will probably be samba and ssh. I wish we could get connectbot(closes immediately on connection attempt) working with proxy droid (from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2505762 ) or something similar so we could use ssh tunneling as a vpn client. I definitely prefer that over ssh tunneling app cause it proxy's all your traffic. the latest orbot.apk (tor for android) has some nice new features were you can pick you country exit node easily. A comment off topic, I will not be updating my already rooted firetvgen1. I prefer the stablity and the compatability of what is already there and defintely dont want fireos5. I am not so happy with my rooted/twrp firetvgen2 not for what the devs have done of course. it's just newer isn't always better. again dev's please don't take this the wrong way. I just found my ftv1 more compatible with more apps.

What I'd suggest to everyone is achieve root asap and resist the temptation to fiddle too much!
Remember its harder to 'restore/unbrick' without recovery (if rbox does achieve it) so don't do anything risky until we have a way of restoring. Especially if its your 'main' Kodi source.
Once we have recovery and a pre-rooted ROM then the goodness will come without the risk of a brick.
I nearly bricked mine this weekend by freezing FTVLauncher and setting Kodi as permanent Home, Kodi didn't take to it and I had no way revert teh default launcher change as its not available in Settings.
What we need is some cleaver chap to compile the ASOP Settings.apk for the stick with all the links to the right places.

be careful with samba, the system tools of "adbFire" and autostart modifications in general!
I almost bricked mine and ended temporarily in a bootloop... Luckily there was still a 10-30 sec window in each loop to connect with ADB and undo the changes before fire os crashed and the FTV restarted.

Just posting that I successfully rooted my FireTV version 1 with KingRoot 4.1. At first it wouldn't connect to my network, so I removed the hard wire and connected my FireTV via WiFi, and KingRoot worked. I disabled future updates and it worked.

I successfully rooted my FireTv stick v1 with KingRoot 4.8. I just blocked updates for now.

Found a working root for 4.6.1

Greetings!
I was successfully able to root my US unlocked Fire Phone (on 4.6.1) by installing and running KingRoot 4.0!
KingRoot appears to work on other 4th gen Amazon devices as well!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/kindle-fire-hdx/general/to-root-4th-gen-amazon-device-t3104853
One caveat:
KingRoot installs KingUser as its superuser app, and KingUser appears to prevent the su binary from being overwritten.
Because of this, I have not yet been able to replace KingUser with SuperSU or similar.
Hopefully someone more knowledgeable can resolve this, but until then
I've opted to install the Xposed Framework and LightningWall module in order to block KingUser's network activity.
najoor has found a way to replace KingUser via adb:

Thanks z64 for the information about a working root for 4.6.1 (US Unlocked GSM) Fire Phone.
I would like to know if KingRoot 4.0 is really safe to use, and if will make a FULL or a PARTIAL root to the Amazon Fire Phone?
I also would like to know if after rooting, you will be able to go backward and UnRoot later the Fire Phone, to the default and normal original state?

Is KingRoot a PC based program or a APK file? I'm Google searching now, just wondering which you used.
http://androidxda.com/download-kingroot-application
Choose 4.0
does this survive a reboot? that would be great news =)
After rebooting root checker report" ROOT" but you are right superSU is not working actualy it got installed but the SU binary upgrade failed
Can I go backward and UnRoot later the FirePhone to Default/Normal Original State??
Please, can someone that has already Rooted their Fire-Phone, if after rooting would be able to go backward and UnRoot later the Fire Phone, to the default and normal original state?

I'm not sure what qualifies as a full or partial root; the bootloader is still locked, so no custom recovery or custom roms.
It is possible to unroot using the included KingUser app.
You have to uncheck "Backup Root permission" first to completely unroot it.
(Still haven't figured out how to replace KingUser with SuperSU while it's rooted.)

Instructions for replacing Kinguser with SuperSU are posted in the general forum:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-phone/general/root-fire-phone-supersu-t3105546
Not sure why - but after following instruction (after rooting etc) tried to follow the guide for making phone look like normal android and thats when all hell broke loose on my phone. Unresponsive bottom button, wiget's not loading, super su showing nothing then refreshing a while later showing apps in there etc.
Kinda killed my phone so going to factory reset and start again.
This is great! I got the now launcher to work, although I'm not exactly sure how. I tried the supersu replacement and only made it to steps 6 and 7 mostly because I couldn't understand what exactly I was supposed to do, so step 8 didn't work and I'm still using the kingsu. I then d/l the now launcher and the google (search) apps, tried to run it a couple of times with no luck. Then force stopped the home app, restarted, and I was given the choice to use the now launcher.
Its easy. If u have root, convert Google Now Launcher and Google Search with Titanium Backup to a System App... And you can Choose Google Now Launcher.
This is great. I was able to fix my play store/services issues by changing my build.prop to nexus 5 after rooting. Awesome!

5.0.4 to 5.0.5 With Root on AFTV2?

Ha's anyone created a method to go from 5.0.4 to 5.0.5 (on AFTV2) while keeping root? I'm on 5.0.4. With updates blocked because I don't want to screw something up or lose all of my progress. Really wish there was a one click solution!
BTW can a mod please change the title to "5.0.4 to 5.0.5 With Root on AFTV2?"
You should install TWRP recovery, then once rbox releases a pre-rooted 5.0.5 image, all you need to do is flash it.

Thanks. I'll do that tomorrow after work. For now, I get to enjoy a messed up Fire TV that auto-updated to 5.0.5
- No root
- Wukong remote messed up
- and worse of all, the damn thing only wants to fill 1/4th my TV space on HDMI but when I use the HDMI to Component adapter, it's perfectly fine... UGH! Tested the port with other devices, they run just fine. It's just this silly Fire TV! I REALLY hate Amazon right now!

The rom isn't like the mobile/tablet roms where the icons/wallpapers/displays are different, it's the same as stock but with root access & a custom TWRP recovery system. If you want something like that why not root on maybe 5.0.4 or 5.0.5 r1 which both comes with a custom recoverys? Here's a link to a video tutorial -

Actually I went ahead and used the tutorial on AFTVnews.com -I figured, what the hell, if I lose everything, it would have been a learning experience . All of my games are still here which is awesome. I do need a way to block updates that doesn't require ADB. For some odd reason, ADB on this PC is a bit fussy and wont pickup on the AFTV now. All of that aside, I'm glad I can finally get back to playing Asphalt 8. I had that game mounted to my USB drive. The only piece of my "Happy with AFTV2" puzzle that's left for me is proper Google Play access and that's mostly so I can activate my "Folder Mount" license and install my Google Play game collection. For now, I'm a happy kitteh! Thanks to everyone that replied. I guess now I know what to do in the event of another accidental update.

Can't launch SuperSU on Amazon Fire Tv

Hey, just wondering if anyone can help, for the past week I've been trying to fix a problem with my Fire tv and have tried various methods to fix this issue. Basically I use Sloane 5.0.5 r4 ROM on my aftv 2, it comes with super su and the root does work as superuser requests pop up to allow or deny. However super su doesn't appear in apps (the GUI management tool) when installed (tried various versions of supersu from 2.4 to 2.7) and I try to launch it, it just takes me back to the home screen. From googling I can see a few others have a similar problem, some people suggesting kingroot(not keen to use that as it doesn't give me the same options as super su) some suggesting rbox will make an update to sort the problem. Although not something I know is definite. The super su works and it's binaries as suggested earlier but the gui tool is nowhere to be seen. Even tried changing sloanes rom and replacing it with another supersu version but this hasn't worked. Just to add more details im running TWRP recovery also!
Thanks.

It's something Amazon does to Android and SuperSU being a system app. I noticed the same problem with the Play Store. You might be able to launch it while in an alternative launcher and/or using adb shell.
Run a adb shell and fire up this one
pm path eu.chainfire.supersu
Just to check the installation path
Hey rbox! Many thanks for your reply, and well done on your effort with this rom, can't fault it except for this minor issue. Been tearing my hair out trying to figure out exactly why it all looks fine and well but won't launch. I was thinking of trying to install play store using xposed, was looking at a guide online and wondered if it would open through play store. Didn't realise I could use another launcher with your rom though. Do you know if there's others you know that understands amazon devices to come up with a fix, update etc? seems like you're the only one to make a rom so far for the aftv so I'm guessing it'll take time until everyone fully understands amazon devices and apply similar Android based roms. Thanks for your advice.
Here's what the path came back as, I did notice there's two different locations for supersu though.
correct me if i'm wrong but as far as i know the supersu (the one that you just found) is the su binary but the GUI (which is responsible for the grant notification) is here: /system/app/Superuser.apk
I'm not 100% sure about it, so maybe someone could light up the dark
once sloane-5.0.5-rooted_r4 is flasheed can we update SU from play store?
Sure but you don't have to. Just take that one http://apps.evozi.com/apk-downloader/?id=eu.chainfire.supersu

My experience is with Firestick.
1) On main Amazon screen, go to the App line and look accros there.
2) Connect Wukong Remote https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wukongtv.wkremote.client.en and you'll see the Apps selection at bottom.
I like to go into Supersu settings and the default to "Grant" and I like to turn off notifications.

Arghhhh. Think I've soft bricked my fire tv or worse! I was re flashing the rom and was cleaning the data before hand, I must of wiped the system and now I'm only seeing the amazon white logo when i turn it on... Tried to install recovery again since I can't even get into recovery but when going through preloader it eventually says error can't find target file. Tried to use fast boot but fire tv isn't connecting to try and install recovery etc that way! You guys got any ideas or have I totally broken the device? ???
Keep calm buddy, als long as the preloader is still working everything is possible. Did you try to Flash TWRP again?

Everything is installed now, hopefully in near future someone manages to get SuperSu opening in the GUI lol im just happy I can actually use my fire tv again though!

Now root for 5.2.1.1 possible?

Hello,
linux has a "new" gap to get root rights.
android is also affected.
CVE-2016-8655 Linux af_packet.c race condition (local root)
http://seclists.org/oss-sec/2016/q4/607
is it possible to implement this into FireTV2 to get root rights?
I wrote Kingo Support a Mail but they didn't answer yet.
Maybe you have technical know-how for an answer.
thanks
This could be fun to watch...
Root possible on 5.2.1.1 using kingroot
Hi guys.
Just a heads up, tonight I happened to test rootability on my second firetv 2015( that accidentally was allowed an OTA update to 5.2.1.1.)
Checked kingoroot from my PC with an A to A cord, but did not work.
Tried the KingRoot app, success!!!
Have rooted my firetv again with the latest version.
Have pictures of versions but definitely is working.
Flashed the TWRP version 6 using adb and turned off the OTA. Will soon update to non kingrooted version of 5.2.1.1 prerooted by rbox now!!!
Kingroot definitely does not work on 5.2.4.0 yet...

I'm wondering if you are the first or second person to root 5.2.1.1? Congratulations.
The 5.2.4.0 just rolled out 2 days ago for me, and the interface is much better.
Would you mind sharing a brief, detailed, step-by-step on the process you used?

Hello,
linux has a "new" gap to get root rights.
android is also affected.
CVE-2016-8655 Linux af_packet.c race condition (local root)
http://seclists.org/oss-sec/2016/q4/607
is it possible to implement this into FireTV2 to get root rights?
I wrote Kingo Support a Mail but they didn't answer yet.
Maybe you have technical know-how for an answer.
thanks

I too would like to know this, maybe I can add it to a guide like this.
Hi, wrote up a longer response but it was deleted before I could post (chrome mobile). Very frustrating.
Short story is used KingRoot not kingoroot.
The KingRoot apk worked to root my 5.2..1.1 firetv2. Ver 551203220.
The version of the KingRoot apk was 4.9.6.
After rooting, used the aftvnews guide to write the TWRP recovery v6 by rbox.
No problems writing the prerooted software afterwards either. Wiped data to get rid of the KingRoot app data and deleted the other junk folders in /sdcard; Tencent, and some other KingRoot/kingoroot folders.
Hope this helps.

You will need a mouse to navigate the app
I tried to do this on my 1st gen. Fire TV that runs on 5.0.5.1 with 4.9.6 but no success. I also tried the latest 5.0.1 of Kingroot but also no success.
Can confirm. This just worked on my 5.2.1.1 Fire TV 2nd Gen.
Edit:
100% Working. Starting from 5.2.1.1, I have installed custom recovery and then upgraded to pre-rooted 5.2.4.0
Basic steps are as follows:
Use the downloader app (or app of your choice) to download the kingroot apk from "https://kingroot.net/download-android-apk/"
The apk/version I received was, "NewKingrootV5.0.1_C165_B375_en_release_2016_12_15_20161215173923_105203.apk"
Run it and follow the on-screen instructions (press the button and wait for it to finish). Nothing to it. You'll need a mouse to navigate the app, however.
Transfer the zip files and custom recovery to /sdcard/ on your fire (you can use adb, usb, ESfileexplorer, whatever).
TWRP: http://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-tv/development/firetv-2-recovery-t3309780
Pre-rooted 5.2.4.0: http://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-tv/development/firetv-2-sloane-prerooted-stock-images-t3309783
Install the recovery via adb
Use TWRP (you'll need a keyboard now... ugh) to install the prerooted rom
Use TWRP advanced wipe and clear your Davlik/Cache/Data/Internal Storage so you'll have a nice clean slate (factory reset) to start from.
Enjoy.
PS: You'll go through initial setup again. Hold down the home button on your remote for way longer than you think to get it to pair.
Is there a way to manually update to 5.2.1.1 without root?
KingRoot for PC just fails (connected through USB).
KingoRoot app also fails.
KingRoot app can only be used emulating upward swipes (through adb), but the "Try to root" button is not working through either adb taps or the FTVs-remote.
adb mouse is also not working.. Any idea how to progress?

I installed Mouse toggle from the Play Store. It pushes a little software on your fire tv that actually makes your remote a mouse (sorta).

Thanks! Latest kingroot is now at 70% (seems stuck, but I'll give it a few minutes).
Let's hope for the best..
I can also confirm root using this KingRoot app on AFTV2 5.2.1.1. Thanks!

will this theoretically work with a first gen firestick running 5.2.1.1 or am i wasting my time?
I've personally been trying to replicate this root, and I've only had KingRoot to get stuck on the loading page. Does not progress past that.
So far it seems like it is for AFTV2 only, not for AFTV1 or fire stick. We will soon find out!!
Thanks for the info t3ch42 and ExaltedVanguard
I too can confirm a successful root using KINGROOT v5.01 on a FireTV 2 running v5.2.1.1. (I got KINGROOT from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/one-click-root-tool-android-2-x-5-0-t3107461). I have since flashed rbox's Sloane pre-rooted v5.2.4.0_r1 following instructions from AFTVnews.com
Everything is running great..... by the way, this FireTV 2 was purchased about a month ago, so if you blocked the most recent update, you should be good to root.... Good Luck!

Filmstruck app on FTV1 rooted with 5.2.4.1r2 rom menu issues

Filmstruck app on FTV1 rooted with 5.2.4.1r2 rom - 573210720
Menu selections starts at top (Filmstruck) goes down to browse, then settings. Going back up, it goes to browse, then to Criterion Channel. So can not access Watchlist or Search, and can only access Filmstruck after first opening the app. If you have already gone down a menu selection, you can't go back up to it. I don't remember which version this issue started with but I tried going back a couple rom versions with the same results.
Can anyone else confirm this on theirs or have any idea how to fix it? I have 2 FTV1 boxes and an FTV Stick 1, all rooted. I'd hate to have to go back to stock for one app but since I'm paying for the service (Filmstruck) I may have to.
Video of how it is not working https://youtu.be/uz_JEjfbv18
For what it's worth I did try older versions of the app as well as side loading the app from my kindle fire HD 8 tablet (rooted) where it works just fine. Also works fine on my phone running android nougat and PC. The side loaded app would just start to open and then close.
New versions for Amazon and Google Play - no fix
So there was an update to the Filmstruck app 3.1.1 on Amazon Appstore and 3.1.0 on the Google Play Store. Same results exactly. Both versions work fine on the tablet. Both versions have same exact menu navigation issues on the FTV 1. I'm about to throw in the towel and just give up being rooted and go back to stock. I'd really like to confirm that would be the solution before I go that route though. Can anyone else confirm they do or don't have this issue on their rooted FTV1 or if it works fine on unrooted? Right now all I can do is play it on my tablet and cast to the TV which is pretty frustrating. Thanks in advance for any thoughts on this.
Works fine on new unrooted FTV STick 2
OK, the suspense was killing me so I went and bought a Fire TV Stick 2 for testing. Opened up network so it would take updates if it needed them, set it up, installed the Filmstruck app, and everything worked perfectly. (Except I couldn't adjust the video scaling, but that's just because I have an old TV)
So I guess this confirms there is an issue with the Filmstruck app and the latest prerooted rom versions for the FTV1 and FTV1 Stick.
Finally decided to pull the trigger on unrooting and going back to stock on the FTV Stick 1 that I had. Now the Filmstruck app works perfectly as it should. Hopefully someone can figure this out before I just give up and toss root out the window on my other two FTV 1 boxes.

One option is to keep TWRP & root access but remove the SU folder from the PreRooted ROM before flashing. This will have u running unRooted (no SU manager) with the option to flash SU or root access in the future. Just make sure you are still blocking updates probably thru Method 2.

I will try that out while I'm in the process of unbricking one of my other FTV 1 boxes. Didn't realize it would be as simple as removing the su folder. I'll report back with my findings. I'm surprised no one else had this issue reported yet. There's an awesome library of movies available with that app.

Will have to try that App out. Thanks for the heads up. RBox mentioned that was possible even before the PreRooted FireOS 5 Rom's started to come out. And a few folks have mention success. As long as the updates are blocked. You should be able to keep updating the ROM as long as you remove the SU folder. Best of both worlds.

Well it took some major convolutions on my part but that was mostly because the box I was working with was on old CWM with the boot menu and stuck in a reboot loop. After finally getting the zip without su pushed over, TWRP would say the file was corrupt. I originally used the windows built in zip manager. After redoing it with WinRAR it all loaded perfectly. On reboot I had to reregister, reinstall the app, and guess what? It works perfectly now. So I'm on the latest ROM 5.2.4.1r2 minus the su folder. Thanks a ton!

Did u used a MD5 file for verification of the modded zip? That never worked for me last time I tried. Guess something was hard coded.
Make sure you verify you got at least the Method 2 of update blocking working. TWRP should also block updates. But at least one extra Method is good for piece of mind.
And don't forget to share the knowledge...

No MD5 file as it would not match with the SU folder removed. It would be a different size. I do have the update domains blocked through the router as well as through my Pi-Hole network wide ad blocker. So two layers there. That and there may not be any updates for FTV1 any time soon. Thanks again!
I could create an MD5 file and post that as well as the zip with the SU folder removed if you want to try it out.

No problem. I tried to create a new MD5 file before to match the modded ROM. But there seem be something hard coded. Since it would still fail in TWRP. That is why I asked.

Gotcha. It seemed to load just fine without the MD5.
Well it worked for a few weeks and then back to the same behavior as before. Going to try unrooting again.
