I updated clockworkmod recovery through rom manager. Rom manager said the install was successful. So then I boot into the recovery to flash the cyanogenmod 10 preview build. I do all my wipes data, cash, exe. Then I go to install the rom and I realize now with the new recovery I can’t install/restore anything from /extsdcard (external storage). It only has the option to install/restore from /sdcard (internal storeage) which would be fine except all my roms/backups are on my micro sdcard (external storage). I have already wiped everything so now I can’t boot my phone to fix it. Is there a way to install the old recovery after I have wiped everything. I was thinking about using Odin to flash the old recovery in download mode again (like I did when rooting) but I am not sure if this is ok to do. I tried mounting the internal storage to my pc to copy the files I need from my computer to my phone. When I plugged it in the box in the bottom right popped up and said installing drivers and they were successful but when I try mounting (anything) the computer does not recognize it. So I can’t transfer the files. Would someone who knows more than me give some advice please?

While youre in recovery, can you mount through the mounts and storage option? Im not on the recovery you are talking about but if you can mount it you can throw the rom on that way. If you cant do that you should be able to just boot up the rom thats currently on it and mount it that way. Just because you wiped everything doesnt mean that it wont boot up, it just cleared all of the data. It should load up with your previous rom.
Thank you very much. It gave me more insight on what was going on. I have my phone back up and working. I was able to flash the old recovery with odin and i hope this information will help someone else in future as well.

no OS currently installed!
TWRP 2.3.3 (I know, needs to be updated)
Skip to the bold text for the TLDR version.
So here's the story... I was going to flash the latest AOKP and decided that this time I would do things right! In the past I had almost always dirty flashed, but this time I was going to start clean and only restore data for a handful of apps. So I booted into TWRP and wiped cache, dalvik cache, system, and ..........internal storage! I went to flash the ROM I had downloaded and that's when I learned that I had made a huge mistake :crying:
So I've been doing a TON of reading; I think I've found a solution to my problem in this thread.
I know I can either use ADB push to reload the ROM or use ODIN mode to reflash (although I was unable to get ODIN to see my phone). My concern is that if I'm going to have any chance recovering my files, I need to avoid writing to /sdcard at all costs.
So here's my question, is there a way to get a binary dump of /sdcard aka /media/data without first installing android? I need to be able to do so from TWRP or fastboot. I have the GN toolkit but I don't see any way of doing this. I also have all the drivers installed and working (or so it seems) and ADB installed.
Sorry I misread. I'm not sure how you can recover from that.
I think you should be able to adb push a ROM to it. Flash it and it won't touch the contents of the SD card.

Actually, this is exactly what I did. The new ROM wrote a directory structure and various files to /sdcard, hopefully none of those writes overwrote the data I'm trying to recover...
16GB thumb drive and USB OTG cable. Boot into recovery and use dd to dump the user data partition to the thumb drive.
Probably too late for that, since you've already written files to the partition.

Ya know, I have a huge thumb drive and a USB-OTG adapter, I never even thought of this! Thanks, if I ever need to do this again I will try that.
I was able to recover most if not all of my pics (the only thing I cared about losing) using this guide I linked above.
Glad that method worked. It's kind of scary with GN having a single data partition and no ext sd. Coming from a device with separate /data and /sdcard partitions plus and ext sd, I miss being able to back things up onto the card.
In TWRP, it reads "E: Unknown File System: 'datamedia'" - It's referring to data/media but it's missing the /. I can't load ADB or download mode because it wont mount. At first, i thought it was the micro USB port, so I changed it. Nope. I did get Cyanogenmod installed (It was blank) because USB worked ONCE. I can't get it to work again......
All I need to do is restore my EFS partition because I cant get Wifi right now but without USB, I can't... I have the backup EFS on my computer. Anyone know what I can do?
(It's not activated on sprint btw - that's why Im not concerned about the network)

Did you try wiping everything including internal storage? I am not sure where that option is in twrp, maybe under advanced?
Also, when you replaced the usb port, did anything get crossed? Does the phone charge?

The phone charges. I tried wiping internal storage in the first place, but now i'm afraid to wipe it again because ADB doesnt work to get everything back.

I see, what about a reset via bootloader?
Then again I think that would cause the same result. A bootloader factory reset would wipe everything.
Have you tried using a different computer? Sometimes if you're on windows it has different drivers for each mode and can't always install them correct if there is a conflict. Try a computer that you never hooked the phone up to to see if anything registers.
Are you able to get into download mode on the phone? or just recovery?
Just found this, thought since it was the same problem you have that it might help.

Hello there people! I currently own a M8 obviously. I just recently ran in to a huge problem it seems? Like, i wanted to factory reset my phone right. At first what i did was just wipe the dalvik cache, data and system. Maybe it wasnt the greatest idea, reason to why it went **** but after that it got stuck on the HTC Logo screen and thats all. I restarted it but didnt work. I did a full factory reset but it still didnt help. And because of the full reset i cannot reinstall Revolution HD 8.1. Inside the recovery im trying to mount so i can put the revolution HD rar file but it doesnt let me because it doesnt recognize it as a storage device. It recognizes it as a CD Drive for some reason? May be mistaken because it might just be my DVD drive but it didnt appear untill i tried to mount the phone. Nonetheless, the only option i have to mount with the phone is System, Cache, Data. I have no micro SD card but i think i got one lying around and ill try getting that. And theres one last option called USB OTG but i cannot click it even through using usb. The recovery i have is called Team Win Recovery Project version 2.7.0.2. Everything else before this went 100% fine. No issues at all.
Any clues guys? Appriciate all the help i can get!
EDIT: Even with a micro SD card it refuses to mount. Looks im screwed here lmao.
Well, it won't boot as you have formatted system partition.
There is a way to copy files to your phone.
Go into recovery, connect your phone to pc and then use command like this :
Adb push file.zip /sdcard/file.zip

So, I have an N7100. I have rooted my phone a few times. The last time was over a year ago and it worked fine. Yesterday, suddenly (I haven't attempted to flash anything) it restarted on its own and won't boot. I tried to go into the TWRP recovery I had installed over a year ago, but TWRP will only load for a second and then disappear and the phone would restart again and go into the bootloop. As a result, I can't wipe cache partition.
I can confirm that I can connect successfully to ODIN and flash a different version of TWRP. I have failed to flash CWM so far... maybe I couldn't find a correct version since my phone has knox???
I tried flashing a different kernel, but that didn't work either. Do I need a specific kernel?
The only thing I need to do is recover my files, whether it is through recovering the phone, or accessing the internal storage.
Can someone please help me? I don't want to do a complete wipe.
And in case this is relevant, my ROM is the custom OMEGA rom, I'm not sure which version though. Either 31, or 26, which is either for android 4.3 or 4.4.2.
Thanks
Hey,
I have the same problem, the phone just restarted on it's own yesterday, restarted again and is now stuck at the bootlogo.
Wiping Cache and Dalvik on it's own doesn't suffice, Wiping the system partition too (TWRP) gets the phone to boot, but it will restart again after a couple of minutes, again stuck at the boot logo.
I'm using the limbean ROM.
shadnixx, wiping the system partition does not mean that you're going to loose your data - you should try that, after the factory reset the phone is usable for a couple of minutes, I will now try to flash a newer ROM and gapps, maybe the problem will go away with that.

Thanks for replying. I can't wipe the partition. That requires that I get into recovery, right? I can't even get into recovery. TWRP loads for just 1 second and then the phone reboots.

have you tried to reinstall TWRP recovery? Maybe yours is corrupted, try to flash the latest version again. If that help you boot in recovery, things will be easier to haddle after.

Yeah I already tried that. Thanks though
@shadnixx Well use every possible way to flash and enter custom recovery. Try Philz, TWRP, CWM, everything...
If everything fails you'lll have to reflash Stock ROM using Odin. I've heard is wipes data but not internal storage but I'm not sure and don't balme me if it happens. Search xda a little.
See these threads: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2583588

If that fails then the phone has hardware damage I think. Needs to go to service.

Thanks for your reply. That's what I'm trying to do. One question... do I have to have a specific CWM version that is compatible with my ROM?
Progress
OK, while flashing TWRP failed to help, flashing Philz Touch enabled me to get into recovery. I was able to mount the external SD card and browse the files, but the real problem is with the internal storage, since the SD card is removable. I couldn't manage to mount it. Can someone help with that?
Wiping the cache partition didn't help either.
You tried different tar versions of twrp?
What is the error message in Odin when trying to flash twrp?
Tried flashing twrp with different USB cables and USB ports?

I'm sad to report, after I wiped the cache and restarted my phone, Philz would behave like TWRP did, which is to load for 1 second then reboot. Yes, I tried 4 different versions of TWRP, same result. Odin doesn't give any errors. It says that flashing was successful. Tried different cables and ports too, yes.
Possible power button or battery problem?

Don't think so. I just replaced the battery... still same problem. And when I enter Odin "Download" mode, it doesn't keep restarting, so I don't think it's the power button.
I got a small update though...
Flashed another version of philz, which works every time I boot to recovery. A few problems though...
1. I can wipe cache partition, no problem. But When I try to wipe Dalvik, the phone reboots as soon as I try.
2. Aroma file explorer doesn't show any files.
3. I can mount external SD, but I can't mount internal storage
4. When using ADB, it could finally initiate pulling files from the internal storage (or that's what it appears to be doing), but only while on recovery mode. A few seconds after it says "listing files" or something, the phone reboots and the ADB operation aborts. It doesn't behave like this when I access other sections of philz recovery.
Any thoughts?
Another small update...
While using philz, I clicked the "install zip from sdcard" and it showed my folders. I think my files are intact, but I guess I can't be certain.
Small update again...
I flashed Aroma File Explorer from Philz, I managed to enter my internal storage browse around for a bit, but then the phone rebooted again. I tried to repeat so I could copy my internal storage, but now my internal storage says symlink error.

Listen up - Transfer any ROM to your external SD card, touchwiz based to avoid any complications if you can.
When you get into recovery (at least on TWRP 3 on my Galaxy Note 2 LTE this works) you can connect your phone to PC and transfer all the files, it just gets recognised.
If that fails then wipe /data and /cache partition and see if it boots. If that fails/succeeds then try to flash new ROM and wipe /data and see if it will boot. Data is not the same as internalSD. Data is your apps and settings, you can reinstall that later. InternalSD is your pictures and all. You want your pictures, not your apps, right? It is different.
But who knows what happened here. Malware? Corrupt partition? Hardware failure of some kind? Don't blame me if flashing a new ROM breakes everything even more.
