So I just had an issue where one of my Google accounts was not working for some reason so I removed it. Then when I added it back all of my contacts and hangouts do not populate with the persons name. Instead it only shows their phone number. What do I need to do to get it back so that it can show their names? I cleared the cache and storage from the contacts and hangouts. Thanks!
Sounds like you need to give those apps permission to access your contacts.

Already have, but it still doesn't work and no its not working on my tablet either. I changed my password in my Google account yesterday and so it required me to sign in, but it didn't work. So I removed the account from both my tablet and phone. It was the same account. And when I put it back on each device now the contacts are not working.
Have you rebooted since adding the account? Also have you checked that accounts settings to make sure it is set to sync?

Yes and yes, though I did not do and just remembered, was boot after I removed the account. Maybe I should remove the account again, boot, add the account back, and reboot.

Morning!
I have searched but nothing useful was found.
Quite frequently I have my gmail inbox say I have 1 new email but nothing new is displayed. I can log into the web and see the fresh email though. At that point I can manually refresh my inbox and it will pop up.
Wtf.

Odd indeed. Does it continue to do so if you remove your account from "Accounts & Sync" then re-add it or if you clear data/cache for Gmail?

Yes sir. I've noticed it on the GPA build and stock. Happens enough that now I'm looking in my gmail inbox instead of trusting notifications. I've seen a few hits about it on Google but most were quite old.
Agreed. Odd odd odd.

I use to have the same issue and couldnt figgure it out for the life of me, so i just setup my g mail account to be checked by the stock mail app, and just removed the gmail app all together. Now i get my gmails just fine. You could also use a 3rd party mail app from the market such as K-9 mail.
I can't help but wanted to say that I often have the same problem.
I guess what befuddles me is that the Gmail app on a Google phone can't work reliably. Odd indeed.
Do you think it has anything to do with the amount of memory dedicated for apps on the Inc?
Not sure, if you watch it when its syncing the new email will show for a sec in the gmail app, and then dissapear but still give a notification of the new email.
Just did it again.

I've found that generally this happens when you receive a new message on a different gmail account but the message you receive is for a thread that you've already deleted.
Ex. I receive a newsletter from some company on gmail account #1. I delete this message. I receive the same newsletter on gmail account #2 (both linked to the same inbox). Since the thread is already in the trash it does not get moved to the inbox and no new message is displayed. However, since its a new message it shows "Inbox(1)" when viewing my mail.
That's my own personal experience. Since I've only noticed it when receiving mail with 2 different account I have no clue if the same problem applies with only 1 account
I've had the problem too. I cleared cache, uninstalled, rebooted and then reinstalled gmail, rebooted again and I haven't noticed it since. Not sure if that really worked or it just fixed itself but doesn't hurt to try.

Hello all,
I am using my Gnex with Vicious JB (the 8/02 version with CM10). I was using this, then tried Xenon for a little bit and came back. I just realized that the Calendar is not syncing up, though.
When I open the app it asks me if I want to sign in. This is weird since I have my Google account connected to my phone already. When I try to add it I get a message saying that this account is already on the phone... but my Calendar remains empty. I tried going to Settings -> Accounts and then Sync, there is no option for Calendar there. I also tried to add an account from the Calendar app, but it only allows me to select Corporate or Verizon.
Anyway, has anyone ever run into this before? Thanks in advance. Let me know if you need any more info, I am sure I forgot something.
Have you wiped after flashing?
Oh right, yes, I did. The cache and dalvik-cache.
I found some "solutions" on other sites and tried those. These included connecting existing Gmail accounts and creating a new ones. Still no good.
Does anyone have any other ideas?
This happened to me I just flashed gapps and calendar synced

Would bet money if you looked in system/apps that you are missing GoogleCalendarSyncAdapter.apk. Pretty much any gapps package will have it which is why it worked for the poster above me.

Dirty flashing the gapps did it. I don't know why I didn't think of trying that.

Alright so i been going nuts trying to figure out why when i sign in a new device it gets full access to all my google account information. I have a few android phone in the the house all using different google address so its fine. But recently purchased a new tablet and both me and my brother signed in which is fine. Installed all the apps that were purchased from the Play Store and this is were the problem is.
When you sign in once the tablet now has access to everything related to that google account and no verification is asked or prompts to login. I don't want my brother reading my emails and he is the same it makes no sense why you enter it once and the device has access to everything. I would like to control what features of my google account a device has access too.
I just want to be able to install purchased apps on the tablet and nothing more, is this possible?
Hahahah. Jebise. Haha. Bravo on the nik.
AFAIK, no is the answer to ur question. Google is said to be working on multiple user accounts. Maybe an app is out on play store that locks ur email app but i havent heard of it.
PS. Pusti brata neka cita email naucice nesto novo. Heheh.

Thanks, it was unintentional way back when i was thinking of an internet alias. It was suppose to be Jebus (Homer say this in one of the episodes) but young foolish me decided to spell it Jebise and it just kinda got stuck and like you once in a while i get these messages. I know what it means now but anyways back to OP.
That is really dump. This is why we never shared accounts, I don't want to purchase the same apps again. I guess Apple has it right with the AppStore because it prompts for a password to install apps and there is no link to email.

Look in settings in the app store I think there is a setting where it will ask you if u want to ask for password before installing any apps. My phone is off so i cant confirm but I believe i did see it almost 100 %.

yeah but if you go into the app, you can still manually see emails and such even if sync is disabled. it seems I have to remove my account or use TB which is a pain with multiple devices and that not even including updates.
After some thinking I think I will just have to create a new google account just for purchasing apps and nothing else. Sad google has no real control on this.

I just received my Note 2 in the mail and was wondering if anyone knew a way to transfer the contacts from my old phone. Normally I would just import to sim and swap sims and export them. Or I would do it at ATT. However I live an hour from an ATT store and my old phone takes a 3g standard size sim card. Walmart wireless gave me an option to do mobile back up to transfer my contacts however my xperia is blocked from downloading 3rd person apps. So I was wondering if anyone had any tips for transferring contacts. I hope this is an ok place to ask.

I always keep contacts backed up with Google, that way after flashing new roms, etc, they come back automatically. You can do it in sync settings on your old phone, then it's the default setting when you first turn on your new phone.

+1 Google account is great. Contacts calendar docs cloud storage gmail, sign into one account and everything is synced. Very simple considering you need an account for the play store.

Going from Android to Android should be so easy, if you contacts are synced with you Google account. They just magically appear once you add you add your Google account to you new phone.

Only seem to be able to save to gmail or Google server. Can not save contacts to device.
They aren't saved on the phone and backed up on Google servers? That's weird.

Are you able to add a new contact and save it to device only ( save to your Pixel 2) and not Gmail account?
I've never tried. I love the fact that all my phone numbers come back every time I've reset or set up a new phone..
They must've deleted the option to save directly on a device with one of the major Android updates. Tapping add new contact makes me pick an account. I've never noticed it. I can say an old KitKat Note 2 does still have it available.

Do you have an option that allows you in settings to toggle off/on to add contacts to device or sync to Gmail? I filed a claim/complaint with Google about this and they say they wanted to send me a new device as I should be able to toggle off/on with contacts to not sync and add to device but I find this rather strange.

Galaxy S6 Edge and Samsung Note 4. iPhone 6s Plus also allows one to save to device instead of just iCloud. The Gmail and iCloud thing are fine but they should be an option and not a must to save a contact.

I wonder if it's a Google phone thing. My Nexus 5X didn't have an option that I can recall. Can't check anymore cause it died on me 2 weeks before I got my Pixel 2 XL. I'll check my wife's Note 5 later today.

Yes, do not want all my contacts and everything else synced to a cloud server. When one pays $1000 for a smartphone why can't one place all their contacts and everything else on their device without being required to sync to a cloud server and sync all private info with Google's servers. All other smartphones allow one to save to device.

I can completely understand your point of view now.
Thanks for clarifying.
As far as trying to keep it on the device.
I would check your google account and make sure that "Contacts" is not synced and see if that will resolve you not having to save your contacts on the phone.
Please let me know if that helps cause i would like to know if that actually works that way.
Thanks.
There has to be a bug here with this device or Google did this on purpose. Prior to logging on we have option to save to device but once you log on then you can no longer save to device. WTF..? Google sent me a new Pixel 2 XL and new device has same problem.

I also think it is done on purpose. Just got a reply from Google Support. Followed their instructions but still does not work.
Looks like they now realize that one can not save a contact to the device. $1000 for a smartphone that can not and does now allow its users to save new contacts to device. New you can but the minute you sign in to Gmail or Google Maps you lose that option of saving new contact to device.
Why does Google block purposely this option..?

Because they want you to be using their cloud services. Or at least some kind of cloud backup. Majority of people want the convenience of not having to manually sync, enter, export/import contacts, or have to post a "Lost my phone and contacts. DM your numbers please."

For those that want that option they can choose to save contact to gmail instead of device. On all other devices one has the choice whether to save to device or Gmail. The same goes with Apple phone where contacts are saved to device and if you turn on iCloud backup then everything is backed up to the cloud. The option should be the end users and not theirs to make.
After making the switch to my 1st Nexus device years ago (Galaxy Nexus), I noticed this same thing. I actually prefer the convenience of having them synced to my Google account. That way, if I don't have my phone on me for some reason, I can still look up a contact on a computer if necessary.
