Hi,
So I recently acquired an used Sony Xperia Play R800i and i noticed a problem with it.
First of all, the Sim Card slot is physically broken (that's not the problem), just so you know.
The problem is that when you go to WiFI and enable it, it says : Turning on wifi, and never turns on.
I've read a lot of threads, none of them helped. I tried to flash stock firmware, custom roms, deleting the wifi files, factory reset etc.. nothing helps.
So far the best solution was to use Reverse USB Tethering, but I just wanted to know some things:
1) If my bluetooth is working, does that mean that WiFi should work too, or are they independent?
2)Can the broken Sim Slot affect the WiFI ?
3)How can I check if the WiFi is broken physically or it's software problem?
4)Is there a way to make a Reverse Bluetooth tethering?
The underlined questions are the main questions here, other are optional.
I'll be glad to provide more information if needed.
A1. Don't think so as there may be that both are part of SoC (and that's probably how it is), but still there is WiFi module separated from BT one.
A2. No. But maybe both are broken?
A3. Flashing stock is only way to make sure that software is OK. As after that You still have this problem it's hardware.
A4. Check this: http://deepknowhow.com/2013/05/08/share-internet-connection-via-wifi-hotspot-bluetooth-and-usb/
Sent using XT1562 - stock 6.0 (retasia DualSim)
Thanks, for the answers.
Couple of days ago I managed to share my tablet's internet with my phone using Open Garden through bluetooth, but it was way too slow (would it be faster if I had used my pc ?) So far the Reverse USB Tethering works the best, along with Xposed Framework Fake wifi module. The only disadvantage is that I have to be near my laptop.
Regarding to the stock firmware - I think I successfully flashed it before, but the problem was the same.
Are there any schematics of the Sony Xperia R800i somewhere, so I can check the wifi module visually and see if there is any visual damage, or even measure the voltages to check correlation ?
Also the SIM Card slot is physically broken( it is visible, the damage seems to be minor, but I guess it is serious enough).
Thanks once more.
EDIT:
So I found out the exact problem of SIM card issue. There are 3 pins broken off in the outside part( maybe i'll be reckless and replace them myself :silly: )
Unfortunately, I can't still find the problem of the WI-FI issue. By looking at the schematics, i can tell that the Bluetooth and WI-FI antennas are the same, but the most bugging thing is that Bluetooth is working perfectly, while WI-FI is broken somehow.
And also I found a thread of the service manual for the phone, if anyone needs it.

Current situation
So I experimented a little more, and I have come to a point where I can actually give some logs.
The SIM Card fix
The mobile network is working( i can detect cellular networks). The only problem is that there are 3 golden pins missing. Resoldering them probably would fix undetected SIM CARD. I currently don't have appropriate soldering iron to do it, so it will take me some time, to actually try this solution.
The WIFI problem
As to the WIFI, I can't find any solution yet.
I installed the stock firmware R800i_4.0.2.A.0.69_World.ftf and DooMKerneL v14 with WIFI modules(also tried with stock kernel, but they give the same error)
So now, if I turn on LogCat and look at the reports, i can see these lines:

Does anyone here knows what all this means? I haven't found any explanation on internet yet.

I have this problem with my unit that came up without warning. It just stopped scanning for wifi all of a sudden, then stopped reading my SIM when I rebooted. Trying to turn on the wifi takes a long time and comes up with a 'unable to scan for networks' error before automatically turning off again.
I'm using LeeDroid latest with the recommended radio. So far I've tried:
Using the SIM in another phone = SIM works. (that's one variable out)
Switching a different SIM to the DHD = I tried 2. One was okay, the other had the same problem. (?)
Switched to an earlier backup = Same problems.
Switched to a different ROM = Same problems.
Clean install of the current ROM = Same problems.
I'm about to try switching radios and RILs right now.
If that fails, I'm stumped. Does anyone have suggestions for this? The unit is less than 6 months old (still under warranty) but I'd like to avoid the hassle of putting it back to stock, turning it in for repair and switching to another phone.
Edit: Radio and RIL change don't work. I'm troubleshooting without a SIM just to remove that variable. Thought I'd try to get wifi working first.

Hi,
I recently moved from a rooted stock (with minor tweaks) sense 2.2. rom to CM7. Everything works great except the wifi! It only turns on (or appears to) for a few seconds before turning off (doesn't even scan) and shows "mac address unavailable". GPS also doesn't appear to be working.
I've tried reflashing everything (radio, recovery, rom) and no luck. I've read some people have resolved it by a simple reboot (or installing wefi) but that doesnt work!
Any help would be much appreciated!
Many thanks
Other info:
Radio: 5.17.05.23
Recovery: ClockworkMod 3.2.0.1
S-off
ROM: CM 7.1.0 RC1 (and i've tried the latest nightly builds too).
I commented on an old similar thread, but I hope this is a more suitable place for it!
Hi,
After experimenting with many ROMs, radios and kernals, I am still without wifi!
I read a post around removing the wpa_supplicant.conf file from /data/misc/wifi but that didn't work either.
Wifi only works when I revert back to a rooted stock rom.
Any ideas?
hi,
I'm starting to run out of ideas on this one. Everything else works fine bar this issue, and I really don't want to revert back to a stock ROM! I've attached a logcat extract in the hope that someone can help! Please!
Thanks in advance!

This is driving me nuts!
Realizing that my Desire GSM (PVT3, S-OFF, stock HBOOT) won't ever go beyond GB only with the help of HTC, I started looking at alternatives and flashed a ICS build. This was at an early stage so I wasn't expecting much and that's what I got: not much. System app hung, leaving me with no alternative but to take the battery out and wipe Dalvik to boot it.
As the ROMs have progressed, my expectations have risen but still I two major issues:
1) Spontaneous reboots
Often when picking up the phone, I need to enter my PIN because the phone has rebooted. Sometimes I can go a day without that happening, sometimes it happens 3 or 4 times in a row.
2) No WiFi
It won't even turn on, the aLogcat trace is as below.
Seems it can't find the H/W at all! Is this something that can be attributed to the RIL?
This is all really confusing to me, had no problems at all w/ stock HTC ROMs. I have so far tried different versions of Sandvold and MIUI ROMs. Anybody experience the same or has a clue to what's wrong?
Still no go - more evidence
As I thought WiFi was dead, I restored the phone to stock HTC 2.2. Lo and behold, now WiFi worked!
Armed with fresh new confidence I installed a number of 2.3 Sense and non-Sense ROMs (Runnymede, CM 7.1 etc.) just to see the same problem again.
Any idea? According to the dmesg below it's a hardware problem but since it work at least sometimes with stock ROMs it can't be that bad. Any other 2.3 user who could post their dmesg for a functioning WiFi card?

First of all, go back to stock 2.2 (clean install from RUU, not a nandroid) and keep runnin' it for a few days while monitoring WiFi. If the WiFi's stable with stock, then it must be a software fault, in which case i'd advise you to upgrade to the latest radio from the official GB ROM when using GB/ICS ROMs. If the WiFi's not stable even with stock 2.2 + stock 2.2 radio, then you have a hardware problem on your hands and my bet is that nobody but an HTC service can help you with that.
Here's my logcat for enabling the WiFi connection + connecting to my router (i have replaced the MAC strings with ADDR).

Looking through your logs and comparing them to mine, it seems to me that your logs say that your device doesn't seem to be able to properly mount the SD card.
Code:
[ 512.170928] mmc0: new high speed SDIO card at address 0001
[ 514.212982] mmc0: Data timeout
[ 514.213256] mmc0: Controller has been reset
I know (from reading XDA) that USB bricks are associated with SD card read errors, WiFi dropouts, network dropouts etc. While i am in no way versed in mobile devices, i believe that your issue is somehow software-related, not a hardware fault. If i were in your place, as i said earlier, i'd try reverting to stock 2.2 (full RUU - stock bootloader, stock radio, stock everything) and i'd monitor the device for a couple of days. If i would encounter the same problems as under the ICS ROM you're using, i'd switch to a different custom recovery (some recoveries/recovery versions are known to have bugs) and i'd try to use ye olde USB brick fixes. Only if all would fail i'd call it a hardware issue and dip the phone in liquid Frackitol.
Thanks for your suggestions, TVTV.
I have tried reverting to stock RUU 2.2 - naturally the WiFi works... Right now, I'm running RunnyMede 5.0.1 (Android 2.3.5, Sense 3.5) and everything just works - WiFi running well and no hard or soft reboots. With any ICS build, though, I get the "data timeout" and occasional CRC check failure for mmc0 as above.
Your post got me thinking of the USB brick case. Although I have none of the other symptons, it could be a case of messed up misc partition, I guess. Tried updating to Alpharev HBOOT and them misc reset as described here -> android.modaco.com/topic/309939-usb-brickrickrolledb0rked-fixed/
Running out of ideas so pass me that bottle of Frackitol, please...
It seems that you're not the only one who ran into this issue. Check this thread out.
The OP seems to have solved his problem by replacing his/her SD card which was faulty and was being mounted as read-only.
does anybody know whats keeping sprint htc 10 from booting aosp roms? is it the mm firmware hos has it never booted? will it boot once we get official nougat? i'm kinda scared of s-offing and flashing us unlocked firmware because i've read people brick there device when the flash back to stock which I'll do when i resell it. thank you
attached is the only logcat i could get in a bootloop
