No CEC on FireTV Stick - Fire TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I got a problem with my FireTV Stick. I want to use my Harmony IR remote and read that the FireTV Stick supports basic CEC. Currently, I use the CEC feature of my Samsung TV
for controlling my PS3, so CEC is working in general.
Not for the FireTV Stick. The stick is recogniced by my TV and Onkyo receiver by name, but I can not control anything.
My current firmware is "54.1.2.3_user_12306702". I used the ADB shell to check for the settings for CEC, but the config "/sys/devices/virtual/graphics/fb0/cec" does not exist.
The cec daemon can be found under "/system/bin/cecdaemon" but it is not running. Simply starting it does not help. Do I need root for that?
The support told me that CEC is currently broken, but there are useres out there where CEC is working with that FW. I already tried a reset, but no change.
I was hoping to replace the FireTV remote completely by implementing some missing features in FireStarter (I'm a Java developer but no Android expert)
github.com/sphinx02/FireStarter/issues/11
I hope someone can help me.

Just pay ~$22 or whatever for FLIRC at Amazon, it's an IR receiver that allows you to use any remote with the Fire Tv. You may need a USB extension cable also to make the dongle face forward.

Its rather difficult to add an USB device to the stick. I was a little confused that my newly bought stick is still on FireOS3. I thought that "54.1.2.3_user_12306702" indicated 5something
Amazon is rolling out the new 5.0.5 update to all sticks and I will report back if it solved the problem.

I don't think you can have a USB device on the stick as its powered by the micro USB port.
When I had my fire stick plugged in CEC worked fine on both fireOS 3 and 5 preview version. Having moved on to the firetv2 I have less CEC functionality (wont wake from sleep but everything else worked).

Disable cec?

It's pretty much known that aftv has lousy cec support. That's fine but I've almost pin pointed a handshake issue to cec on my bedroom aftv. It's hooked up to an old-ish 1080p tv. I can't find a cec option on the tv itself, like I can in the living room. Basically if the tv starts after aftv is powered on any video I play will have audio cut in & out. I reboot often.
So I'm wondering if I can just disable cec to resolve the issue?
There is one concern...I may some day buy a flirc dongle or new tv. So if I disable it I'd like to be able to reenable it if possible. As incredibly annoying as this bug is, I'd rather tolerate it than break it.
had an issue with the AFTV conflicting with my other cec devices so used this on the hdmi for the AFTV and its all sorted now

Thanks. I'll look into it more. I'm not 100% sure of what this does? Does it basically upgrade the signal?
That may not be the issue here because I've tried higher grade cables. Actually I remember awhile back having handshake issues with Google TV and an older TV set. Customer service actually suggested using a cheap cable ( think 1.0 or 1.1) but that didn't fix it. You've given me a potential fix to look into though. Thanks again.
its and adaptor that removes pin 13 from the HDMI cable making cec on that connection useless but helped with the conflicts i was getting
also if i was to disable the cec on my tv then i would not to be able to you my receiver and sky box so it was the best option for me
i also tried a good decent cable but had no luck with that either

Wow that is a nifty and inexpensive solution.. awesome!
In my searching I also ran upon this adapter - its a tiny bit cheaper and can optionally also be used to transmit IR over the HDMI CEC path

TIP: Use Sony Tv Remote as Fire tv Remote?

I have Sony KDR60R550A and i accidentally figured out that I can use my TV remote play, pause and navigation buttons to actually navigate Amazon Fire TV. It works with any app inside Fire tv.
Sorry if this is known tip.
i think it's not the remote that will work solo,
it's cause your hdtv uses cec.
also my samsung tv remote can be used, also the touchmouse (not synced with ftv but with samaung tv) just google for cec ^-^

Yeah, is a bummer my Lg42LB5600 doesn't support CEC, at least the remote doesn't do nothing to the fire stick.
But it worked on my Samsung and my older 32 toshiba.
I'm thinking of getting one of this down the road and install it on the LG tv.

Anything to help reduce the number of remotes I guess.

That auction for the HDMI break-out box is to separate out the Audio Return Channel from the HDMI cable. It may pass CEC commands, but it doesn't seem to be a CEC injector.

I don't think it will work in my scenario because everything is routed through the bose lifestyle which cuts out all CEC related items. I'll test it out tonight though. Thanks for the tip.
My remote also works with cec but when I am in kodi how to go back to the home fire TV without quiting kodi or how to simulate the home button of the original remote?

I'm happy to report that my sony remote too works even when it goes through the bose lifestyle. Here are my observances.
1. No Additional features can be used such as the number pad of the Sony Remote.
2. The range is limited to Infrared and the remote must be pointed to the TV vs. the firetv remote which has a great range.

[Q] Fire TV stick universal remote

Since the Fire TV stick has no usable USB port to speak of, we can't just plug in an IR dongle.
Some people have had success using HDMI-CEC and their TV remote control. However, my Olevia 232 TV doesn't seem to support the CEC protocol.
Has anyone had any luck using a PS3 remote? Has anyone tried using a Harmony PS3 adapter, or IR2BT bridge?
My thoughts were to build an Arduino device using BT shield setup to use the keyboard profile or Joystick profile; and couple that with an IR receiver.
I have successfully side loaded the settings.apk. I am able to pair a BT PC keyboard. I have seen reports that even some Samsung TV's don't support CEC protocol. So even if officially none of this works, I might be able to Pair one of the devices mentioned above with settings.apk.
Well, I had to side-load the settings.apk. In doing so, I could pair a bt keyboard and a bt media remote control by Satechi. Unfortunately, only PLAY/Pause and the home key do anything. But it's a star. The Forward and back buttons don't seem to work. However, I wonder, if they sent ff and rewind commands; if it would respond.
This gave me the idea to pair the Fire tv remote to my phone.
I was able to pair the Fire TV stick remote to my phone, and tested all of the key buttons .

I wonder if I rename a device to `Amazon Fire TV Remote` if it will accecpt paring in the normal Fire TV settings menu.

FireTV stick working with TV remote

I have a few firetv sticks. Today I noticed something peculiar. One is located in my garage and I was using an IPTV app on the device. I picked up the tv remote to set the timer. I backed out and realized was backing out of a menu app on the firetv. I also have an RCA universal 6 device remote and it worked as well. I know I programmed the rca to control a roku. But I don’t recall doing anything for the firetv. I certainly never did anything to the Panasonic remote (it’s an older plasma tv). Anyone ever seen this? I have many of the universal remotes and it would be great to program more to work with other firetv sticks.
What you're seeing is called HDMI-CEC. It allows the TV to send basic navigation commands to the Fire TV over the HDMI connection. No programming is needed. You can verify this is what is happening by disabling HDMI-CEC in the Fire TV's display settings. See here: http://www.aftvnews.com/amazon-fire...able-hdmi-cec-in-new-5-2-4-0-software-update/

Logitech Harmony Hub will not control Fire TV

I have had a Harmony Hub and Fire TV for years and it always worked, until I tried to adjust some custom settings for Delay on Input because sometimes it wouldn't change the input to my Fire TV....after that, Harmony will no longer control the Fire TV with the remote. I have tried deleting the Fire TV device, deleting and recreating the Watch FIreTV activity, nothing works.
It will pair fine in Bluetooth settings on the Fire TV, it just will not control anything.
Any ideas on how I can get this to work again?
FYI, the Amazon Fire TV remote works fine, but I want to go back to using my Harmony Remote for everything.
This just started happening 2 days ago when I made some changes, which I have since reverted back to Defaults in an attempt to fix this issue.
Ok, well nevermind...so this time I opened up the App to see if I could control it that way and it told me that my hub was in pairing mode...even though I had already paired it. This time it paired again and I had access. My only thought is possibly this FireTV may have paired with my other Harmony remote in another part of the house. It all seems to be working fine now.
