Can i backup my boot loader before i unlock it? - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Another Android noob here. I'm about to root my HTC One m8 so I can flash CyanogynMod. I want to be able to return everything to stock exactly the way as before so that I can reclaim my warranty. Is this possible? Can I back up the bootloader while in its locked state? After that, I would like to back everything up before rooting my device including radio/modem, IMEI number, ROM, and Kernel. How would I go about doing this? Would anything other than the stock ROM and boot loader be affected after rooting my device?

You can't backup a bootloader to return to LOCKED. But you can return it to LOCKED if you have s-off ($25 by sunshine app).
Depending on what version M8 you have, you can RUU back to stock to restore stock radio, recovery, ROM, kernel, etc. Or stock versions of many of these things can be found on this forum, negating the need to back them up or dump them yourself.
Once you unlock the bootloader and install TWRP custom recovery, you can use TWRP to backup your stock ROM and kernel before rooting (which is highly recommended), which (aside from the unlocked bootloader and stock recovery) are the only things that are affected by rooting.

[Q] OTA after flashing interim CWM

Hi,
first, my former device was a Samsung Galaxy S and i'm quite familiar with flashing ROMs and such on that device. The HTC One X is my first HTC device so i'm new in flashing and HTCs.
I used the method described in the below thread to flash CWM to my HTC One X
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1579797
My question now is this, can i receive OTAs with CWM flashed on my device? It is implied in the thread that i need the stock recovery to do so.
There is a stock recovery image supplied in this thread. Can i flash it to any strock ROM version or do i need the specific one for my ROM version and if so where can i get this version?
In order to flash CWM i had to unlock the bootloader, do i need to revert this for OTAs?
Thanks for your answers.
Hey,
with Clockworkmod flashed, you cant install OTA updates, you have to flash stock recovery and relock your bootloader.
If you have a custom rom, you have to install Stock RUU to recieve and install OTAs.

You need stock rom and stock recovery. If your stock rom is just rooted, that's fine, but if you deleted system apps or modded, it might not work.
To install stock recovery you need to be unlocked, but unless you relocked, you're good to go.
You don't need to relock to install OTA.
To install RUU, you need to be relocked, but you don't need to install the stock recovery.
Edit: Urgh, that was quite a bump from the guy above. But the correction is still useful.

[Q] root with unlocked bootloaders ?

can I root my device with unlocked bootloader ?
with SuperOneClick or UnLock Root ?
With an unlocked bootloader you can put a custom recovery on, and simply flash a pre-rooted ROM. No need to struggle rooting the one you have. If you have already unlocked, then you have done the hardest part!
Just read the instructions here carefully, and always do a nandroid backup immediately after putting your custom recovery on.

If you fancy a good ROM that is close to the stock look like your current one, I'd recommend LeeDroid.

[Q] return to stock_stock rom

Guys,
1- I unlocked my phone and rooted but still I have stock rom. Only thing I rooted phone was take away the bloody apps provided by HTC.
2- Now I was thinking if I can unroot my phone if I flash stock recovery and re lock my boot loader. Problem here may create also the SU app which allows me to be superuser.
Can I uninstall with titanum and follow second point to re-flash stock recovery and re-lock bootloader.
Would it mes sup my phone or no? ( I have read the other posts to return back to stock but non of them is to return to stock from stock rom).
Or do I have to flash again form very begging?
I have the RUU.exe and other nand back up from forum, but I preferred the current ROM without annoying apps.
Reason why I would like to go to stock recovery is about charging issue on recovery and bootloader. I flashed the latest recovery yesterday 5.8.4.0 but it does not charge battery, no red light no nothing. I read in the forum that to some people recovery 5.8.4.0 charge some phones but mine doesn't. Strange!!!
Also is it normal that even I power down the phone through bootloader when I connec to PC it recognize the phone for USB mass storage and even it gives me some info though adb commands, such as serial no etc.
I'm on JB 3.14.70724
Hboot 1.36
CID HTC__044
Thanks for helping me
Edit : what do you want to achieve ? You are on the latest JB hboot and software ! Just describe what you want in a simple sentence
You want stock recovery ? Just flash the stock recovery and you are done.
Simply I want to flash stock recovery, relock bootloader, and delete superSU.
And then ? This doesn't change anything to the look and feel of the rom.
You can flash stock recovery, this make no changes to the rom. You can lock the bootloader, this make no changes to the phone, you can delete SU app....also no changes to the phone ... only thing is that you can't do anything that requires root acces.
Thanks a lot.

[Q] Advice before installing custom ROM

Hi all,
Just moved over to the One X from a Desire HD where I had been running Leedroids custom ROMs.
Am loving the One X, but feel I should get another custom ROM on it to make the most of it. Was think of going with Android Revolution.
Anyway.....
I have forgotten the process involved and have tried unsucessfuly to find a 'how to' from scratch. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
At the moment my software info on the phone is as follows....
Android Version 4.1.1
HTC Sense Version 4+
Software number 3.14.401.31
HTC SDK API level 4.63
HTC Extension version HTCExtension_Sense45_1
Kernel Version
3.10-g9fb8f80
Baseband version 5.1204.162.29
Build number 3.14.401.31 C:128187 release-keys
I want to be sure I am ok to custom ROM and also can I backup what I have now, so I can restore back to stock should I need to send it back.
Its on the 02 network, but its unbranded and I think unlocked?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1809141
Try this out.
Before that , hold power button and volume down button ( dont leave) for about 15 secs until a white screen with small letters shows up.
On the top either unlocked or locked should be written. Only proceed to install rom if you are unlocked.
If you are locked try this tool to unlock first
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1604439
Check your hboot of its unlocked, hold the power button and the volume - button together until you are in the bootloader. It says on the top if its locked or unlocked. If its unlocked you can proceed
Then you need to learn fastboot commands, if you did not learn it already.
With the fastboot commands you have to flash a custom recovery and with that custom recovery you can make a nandroid backup of the stock rom. After that you can install custom roms.
Always keep in mind that you have to flash the boot.img (kernel) separate with fastboot commands to the phone and install the rom.zip from recovery
Cheers. It seems its locked. So, I will get it unlocked by 02 before I carry on.
On the tutorial link, I presume I follow the 'For Users Using Sense 4.1' instuctions?
Mate, SIM unlocking is not the case here. You need to unlock the bootloader.

There is currently no way for us to S-OFF our device. But unlocking the bootloader does a similar thing - it makes us capable of flashing stuff by allowing us to write some partitions that would otherwise be read only.
OK, so I folow the two links that {< r o N o $ provided.
At what point and how do I create a backup of the stock system? Is there a tutorial for that?
Listen:
NAND Backup straight away. (From Pure stock)
Goto HTCDev
Unlock Bootloader
Install SuperSU(this makes root)
Your now unlocked and rooted.
Find custom ROM.
Flash the custom ROM.
Flash the Boot.img
Wipe Cache/Dalvik.
Boot

Eh, how does he do a nandroid backup without unlocking bootloader first??
And why would you root and then install a rooted custom ROM? LOL
More like this:
Goto HTCDev
Unlock Bootloader
Install a custom recovery (CWM or TWRP)
NAND Backup straight away. (From Pure stock)
COPY STOCK BACKUP TO PC
Find custom ROM.
WIPE
Flash the custom ROM.
Flash the Boot.img
Wipe Cache/Dalvik.

Since you made a backup your stock ROM this shouldn't be too difficult. Sadly though unless you obtain S-OFF as far as I know you will not be able to achieve LOCKED again only RELOCKED. This shouldn't be a problem with your warranty but you may want to check.
If you enter TWRP and restore from your backup you will be back to stock and about relocking the bootloader it's simply the command:
After your restore your backup ensure fastboot is desabled in settings and USB debugging is still enabled and then reboot into FASTBOOT.
In fastboot use the command:
fastboot oem lock
That should be it as far as I know. Still take my advice with caution considering I am new to this as well but I am pretty sure considering your backup it's very simple task.
Good luck with returning your phone!
