I received the update to Hangouts v7. When I opened it, I get a message asking if I want to make Messenger my default SMS app. Is there a benefit to using one over the other? Google seems to be going back and forth on this without explanation between the two.
From what I see, if I use Hangouts, I can view my text messages from a PC but not with Messenger. However, Messenger is slightly easier to use for just sending a text. Am I missing anything?
This sound like something better suited for the Q and A section. No?

I wasn't sure if the discussion of an app belongs in the app section or in the Q&A section. Guess I bet wrong.
I like hangouts as it combines both hangouts messages & SMS messages in one thread. I have several friends where we'll go back and forth using both services depending on where we're at (hangouts on laptops at work, sms when we're away from laptops).
Wrong Section .
definitely wrong section. SMS sent through hangouts wont be visible on your PC unless you're using Google Voice though.
And you can't text using Google Voice using Messenger
I prefer Hangouts as it automatically keeps a copy of my SMS messages in the 'cloud', so when I re-flash monthly for the update and to clean out my Nexus 5x I don't have to worry about backing them up.
I saw a rumour that they're pulling SMS support from Hangouts soon though...
Why?

Are you sure Hangouts backs up messages to the cloud? If so how do you activate cloud backup of sms/mms in Hangouts? There is no option for it that i can find and i have wiped my phone and my texts were never restored automatically.

I have been using this app and wanted to turn everyone else on to it. This app keeps your text messages synced in the cloud and enables you to be able to send and receive text message on your computer. If I send a text from my phone, it still shows up on my computer and vice versa. It is really nice to have my phone on the charger, and while I'm using my computer I can read and respond to my text messages without having to ever go get my phone. And best of all......IT'S FREE. Check it out.

Correct me if I'm wrong (I'm not 100% certain) but isn't Google Voice SMS just a sms scheduling app? This app I posted about actually uses your existing cell phone number and lets you text business as usual from the phone but the texts stay in sync in the cloud, and gives you access to them (send, receive, compose, etc) from the computer.

What I like about this one is that you can use the browser but you don't have to. They also have a windows and a mac app too. I prefer to use the windows app so that I don't have to keep the tab open with that site. Also with the windows app even after a reboot I still get my messages on the computer.

Yeah I saw a few browser based ones. What got my attention about this one is that it actually has a windows app that I could install to my computer. That's cool because when I boot up my computer I'm able to handle my text messages without having to do anything. The only complaint I have about it so far is that there are no audible text message alerts during a call (just like the stock sms app).
Today I've noticed it doesn't sync the existing mms messages. But it will sync mms messages that come in after you install the app.
Google voice does this. I use the chrome extension all the time

Google voice sends text messages via the google voice phone number.
A friend of mine was using MyPhoneExplorer. It is only for Windows, so i didn't try it. But he told me that the app has a notification system integrated, and you can also answer a call through the pc.
is there additional battery drain with this since it is syncing your texts to the cloud?
Thats one reason why i switched from GV to my regular number, the reliance on data to send texts got annoying with low signal and also drained battery
I think voice typing is better
Outbound, the server can send any phone number but I don't know how it can receive without the phone being on.
The messages can be sent out via a phone or browser but the phone is the key in receiving since the number is physically ported through the carriers to your cell.
So your phone receives the messages and uploads it to the server for viewing everywhere.
Neat. Would be cool using on my tablet.

Thanks for letting us know, a friend of mine might find this very useful. They always thought it was cool that I could send and receive SMS messages from my Google Voice Chrome extension (or the web page, obviously) and they'd always get frustrated when they'd forget to use one of the sms to sd backup apps before flashing a new ROM, but I could never convince them to use Google Voice because they didn't want to switch to a new phone number.
Are there be any possible privacy issues with storing your SMS logs on this companies servers?
how to send contact via sms, event the stock sms also can not send this kind of thing, maybe Google is missing some thing, isn't it??
will it restore my messages from the cloud to the phone?

So I've been using GO SMS Pro for almost two months now. Early on I got tired of getting messages within the app as well as through my stock messaging app. I used NoBloat Free to disable the stock MMS.apk and that eliminated the duplicate messages.
However, I had a friend tell me repeatedly that he had sent me a picture message and I wasn't getting them. I could send them without problem, but I couldn't receive them. So I decided to re-enable the stock MMS.apk and it started working again.
Is there anyway to avoid the duplicate messages and still be able to receive MMS? Should I be using a different messaging app? I like the GO SMS more than the stock messaging app.
Just disable notifications in the stock sms app. That's what I do when I use another app.
Sent from my LG-P930 using XDA App
Well I guess that would eliminate the duplicate notifications, but they are still "there". Even after re-enabling the stock messaging app I had 438 messages waiting. I worry this is slowing down the phone because they all build up. If I could receive MMS without the stock messaging app I'd be fine.
Yes, I've noticed every time that i restart my phone it says i have whatever amount of messages from the stock app, but i redirected it so that when i go to view it just goes to go SMS pro
Sent from my LG-P930 using XDA
I guess I could just redirect it to GO SMS. Does anyone know of a better remedy though?
Could I use Titanium Backup to freeze the stock messaging app? Or would I end up with the same result as I did using NoBloat free?
I have the same "problem". when I send one text message .. the receiver will get 2 messages from me . :|
with older go sms I don;t have any problems
Same problem for me. Send 1=sends 2.
Kiiiind of a critical bug for a sms-app.(if it is the app that is)

Me three. 1 = 2 for me.
GO sms Pro, sent message
Samsung Galaxy S2, same problem with 1 message sendt via GO SMS Pro = 2 received messages for the receiver..
Somebody know the solution for this? Is the problem within the GO SMS application?
Same problem for me..
Same with me , 1=2 , GS2. It forced me to switch to another messaging app. And go sms is the best one
Had the same problem. Just update your Go sms pro app to newest version from google play.
You can check out Whats new section. there is "9.Fix send double msg issue in ICS Galaxy SII"

I just got a new Galaxy S3 and installed Go SMS Pro. My problem is slightly different. The person i send the message to doesn't get double messages. But I get double messages from the sender. I just installed this app 5 min ago so i assume i have the latest version. Any ideas out there? Thanks.

Hello everyone!
I was wondering if it is possible to text someone just by using your Wi-Fi. I don't have the best of service, so I often get text messages really late. Is there any app that I can use that will allow me to receive messages over Wi-Fi? I've heard about Google Hangouts before, is it a good replacement to use instead of the stock messaging app? Also, what don't you like about Hangouts? Thanks a lot for your answers!

+1 :good:
The above statement is accurate about Verizon messages, not a bad app either. Hangouts works great for video chatting and phone calls over wifi too but if you are just needing messaging, I would go with Verizon messaging as the other user of hangouts would have to have a gmail account. While I realize most people do, now, have a gmail account I have found many people do not want to message in Hangouts.
I just got the Pixel XL yesterday and still figuring out all of the specifics. When I got the phone the default messaging (sms) app was set to Messenger. I sent a text using Messenger and the person's response came back on Hangouts. I went through all of the settings and made sure that Messenger is set to the default sms app, rebooted the phone, and no matter what I do the only way that I can receive texts is through hangouts. I don't mind hangouts but I wanted to try both and compare them. I am using Google Fi as my carrier, so maybe this has something to do with it? What are you guys using for your default sms app?
Edit: I figured it out. There was another settings buried deeper in the hangouts app that needed to be changed.
Purely out of curiosity though, which SMS app are you using?
Yaata SMS paid version.

Using the stock messaging app for now. Works fine. On the note I used vzw messages plus because I like the desktop app integration. I may go back to that, I dunno.
To Change
If you wan tot change, just go to either Messenger or Hangouts (they are practically identical) and go to Status and change the SMS App to the one you want. I use both, since I need the Hangouts Caller to dial up numbers on Wi-Fi. I don't do this often, but it is there if you signal is really bad. I am using Project Fi.

Same here. There are a few things I really can't understand why Android still aren't able to do, texting from a computer/tablet using native app is one of them

Stock for me at the moment.
I have been having this issue since yesterday morning where as the title describes that hangouts is taking priority over messages. I literally will not receive messages unless hangouts is selected as the default app. I was thinking that this may have been started once I got a bunch of updates through the play store. However, I uninstalled updates and disabled Hangouts attempting to force the problem to stop. This to no avail.
So is anyone else running into issues such as this. Or, does anyone have any advice as to how I could remedy this issue. I know it is quite silly, but I love being able to use GIFs while texting people and hangouts doesn't support googles GIF keyboard for some reason.

This is a tough one. I've been there before but it was a while ago and I found the answer I believe on G+ but let's see if we can get you back on track here. Under settings->apps-hangouts what shows under SMS app? Click it and make sure at the bottom that sms app is showing Messages. Also in the Hangouts app itself go to settings and make sure SMS is disabled. Let's start there.

So yeah I have already done that. Messages will send the message, but the received message will come in through Hangouts. I am going to do a factory reset when I get home (the wifi at my office is terrible). I will see if that makes any difference. I hate to have to resort to that, but I wasn't having this issue prior to the most recent updates.
So I figured out the problem. I am on Project Fi. Within hangouts there is a setting in accounts that takes all calls and SMS through hangouts. Turned that off and now I am good.
