It was bad on 5.0.1 and it's still bad on 5.1.1. Android System is at the top by a lot (right now around 42%, then Cell Standby 8%, then Screen 7%). I tried multiple fixes (disabling apps, factory resets, uninstalling apps, etc) but they did not work. I would post a picture but I don't know how to (this is my first post)
Did you do a factory reset after you upgraded? I did and 5.1.1 is as smooth as KK4.4

It might be the battery, as well. There have been quite a few people who have had battery issues that ended up being caused by long term battery abuse under 5.01. Frequent quick charging and heat can cause batteries to fail early.
I had the same problem and a factory reset fixed it. I personally think it is an Android bug that causes logical corruption after a certain point. I have had this same problem with other phones before. But, once you factory restore and it overwrites the system files with a fresh image everything it great.

Factory resets especially suck on a non-rooted phone where you have to manually reinstall everything. But sometimes it really is the only option. My wife refuses to do this because of all of the work involved in setting the phone back up, and I've watched all of her phones go to crap over time. Mine all stay good, because of factory resets.
On the good side, it is an opportunity to get rid of apps that you never use. A clean phone is a happy phone.

Yes, but with Samsung backup, google account sync, KIES, etc..it's not that much work, and like you said...a clean phone is a happy phone.
I'm not familiar with any of these. Until now, every phone that I have had has been rooted. I've just used titanium to restore everything after flashing.

Use Kies and do a complete back up of your phone. Do a factory reset but make sure the auto restore options are unchecked in settings before doing the reset. After you do the factory reset and complete the phone setup, hook the phone back up to Kies and do a restore. It will apply all your phone settings, wallpapers, ringtones and apps. Good luck!

Thanks for the information.
After an hour of backing up, it got to 100% and then crashed. When I got back in, there was no backup. Samsung - Everything mostly works.
My battery starts dropping right after I take it off the charger. I charged it this morning, took it off about 8am, and I've barely used it except for 3 phone calls and couple whatsapp messages, its now at 72%, because I literally avoided using it. If I do, its charged to 100 at 8am, and down to 50% by noon, 1pm on regular usage. This sucks.
Yes, I did a factory reset once I got the OTA Lollipop update.

Last night something made my screen turn on and stay on until my battery died. Now if this wasn't strange enough, when I finally got enough charge in it to boot it up, com.android.phone started crashing which means I haven't had service all day. Google calendar has been crashing as well if it helps, but everything else has been fine including wifi. I've restarted my phone several times throughout the day and even reflashed the radios, all to no avail. Does anybody know a fix? I'm running lifeless v12 rooted and unlocked, let me know if you need to know more and I'll gladly provide it.
p.s. ever since this morning my battery percentage has been going up by a couple % every little while before it goes back down. Not sure if it's related in anyway but I'm not really complaining.
Hard reset would be the best option. Then just leave it for like a day to make sure it is working.

Sorry but what is a hard reset in terms of android? Is it just a Factory data reset? Thanks for the response btw.
Well I did the factory reset and that fixed it. I had to do that from recovery though since settings crashed when ever I tried applying the reset.... Thanks again for the help!
Hi everyone,
My S3 would all of a sudden just turn off and I wouldn't be able to turn it back on. I've tried taking the battery out and putting it back in. The phone would turn on by itself, but once it flashes the S3 logo, it would go black and the power button would become unresponsive. Sometimes it would keep vibrating. The only way I was able to keep it on long enough to re-flash/do a hard reset was if I took the battery out and left it overnight. But when I managed to re-flash/hard reset, the problem would come up again after a few hours. I was wondering what might be the cause of this. The first time it happened I was just streaming music, the second time it was just charging. I just got it back from warranty because of a loose power button and this problem was never there before. I was wondering what might be the cause of the problem and how I can go about remedying it. Thanks!
Sounds like the battery is failing. To be sure though, you said you can get it up and running for a few hours, right? That should be enough, but first make a nandroid backup. Then recharge, then do a full wipe and odin flash the stock firmware. (Only do this if you are certain it won't die during the flash.)
Are you on a stock rom now? If so and you're not sure enough to use odin, factory reset, including internal sd, and see if it continues.
If it does go to a Tmobile store and see if they'll let you test with a known good battery.

I did a full wipe and odin flashed it with stock firmware after the first time it happened. I thought I was in the clear, but it happened again couple hours later. I've tried it with my spare battery but it does the same thing, it would turn on by itself, flash the S3 logo, then the screen would go black.
I'd take it to T-Mobile, let them see it happen do their thing, and ask them to note it on your account if they tell you to call support.

Had a problem with phone where talkback enabled itself in pocket. I forced quit it and somehow messed up voice feedback in s-voice. I was on phone with samsung tech for 2 hours trying to figure out what happened. Anyway we did a full backup apps, contacts numbers everything to pc, usingg program kies that samsung provides. After got into recovery wiped the device and reset it. Tech told me never to factory reset from phone only this way. After i did it phone was on 85 per cent charge and ive been using it alot today, now it has 36 per cent left after 26 hours. I had to recharge after 10 hours of use before. I dont know if this just was a fluke, but im definitely getting better battery life now.
hmm, I might have to try that, Im not getting any better battery life it seems, than I did on my 1.5 year old rooted GS4, pretty disappointing so far, so yea i might try a factory reset
Make sure you download the program from www.samsung.com/us/ kies
Once you run it back up everything. Then go into recovery and do the reset from there. Good luck.
Then of course run kies again and restore.

Interesting... Is it possible that after doing the factory reset some of the bloatware didn't get restored? Did you notice any other difference?
So what you're saying is you had processes/apps running that you couldn't shut off and were causing errors, but when you were able to stop them from running by way of factory reset your battery life improved? So in essence, the battery doesn't drain as fast when the phone is not in constant state of arousal...I think my mind was blown
Traqic,
I guess your just trying to be cute..with that comment. I was trying to help some others here that may be having battery issues. I didn't do a factory reset to stop applications from running, the phone, was going wacky on me for no reason hence my decision. Now if you want to talk like an adult i'll entertain your thoughts otherwise do us all a favor and go away.

hey abacus, do you mean go into recovery using the Kies software? thx..
No the kies program is used to fully back ip the device. Itmtakes a smapshot basically of everything you have there provided you select all, music, apps, contacts, messages, notes ect ect. Then when you are fully backed up, you will power down. Then hold the up volume first then the home button down and with a third finger while still doing this you hit power button, its then you will enter recovery and thats where you can wipe the data and then do a restore to factory, omce thats dome, test your device to make sure its working ok, then re attach to your computer, it works better on windows machines, then provided you didnt close kies from previous backup youll see a restore box click off select all takes about 15'min or so and it writes back all your apps messages motes comtacts ect. Hope this clarifiys it for you.
Make sure you let it completely finish before disconnecting because ifmyou disconject in middle, you could, corrupt it. The program is great because as itmprogresses it putsma check mark nextmto each thimg it backsup and restores. Its almost like titatinium backup. All my apps were restored. Dont know if data associated was also, didnt check that.

After you factory reset that way, are the bloatware (ATT apps, facebook and such) still on there? Would be GREAT to get rid of some of these apps that I'll never use.
Unfortunately at&t and rest of bloatware is still there.

Thank for your suggestion. I have one of my own, get a better keyboard or turn off auto correction....or learn how to spell.
Twice this week my alarm didn't go off (luckily I set a backup today) because sometime throughout the night something happened. When I woke up the phone was frozen on the yellow Sprint Spark startup screen. I needed to pull the battery and everything started up fine. I updated to Lollipop about 2 weeks ago which is where I'm guessing the issues stem from.
Is there anything I should try other than restoring to factory and starting over? I'd prefer to not have to wipe everything from my phone but these issues are becoming problematic. I am not rooted.
Thanks.
You answered your own question. You need to try a factory reset. Problems happen when you upgrade to new software without wiping.

Dschachm is correct. Then if you root and install TWRP you can back it up with all of your apps and data. So if there is ever a problem again, just restore and done.
So I ended up doing a factory reset and while the phone certainly started running faster with better battery performance after the reset I'm still having this issue. I would say it occurs 2-3 times a week. It has only occurred overnight which is typically when I charge my phone so I'm pretty sure it is related to being left connected to the charger. The majority of the times I will wake up with a dim yellow Sprint screen and everything else frozen though occasionally the screen will be black with the led notification light red. In both situations the screen will not respond to any button pushes or holds and I need to pull the battery and then everything will start up fine.
Does anybody have any suggestions here on what I should do? I guess I can try and restore one more time and see but I don't really know why it would be different and it is certainly a pain to keep restoring the phone and losing all my settings. I definitely don't want to root now since I believe that voids the warranty and if I can't figure anything out with this I'll certainly be requesting a new phone from Sprint. Before I start dealing with Sprint though I thought I would check here first. Through all my searches on the internet I haven't seen anyone else complaining about this problem.
Thanks.
I've gotten the sprint yellow screen and nothing else.phone doesn't turn on? When I try turn it on after removing batteryou I get the android figure and phone turns off? How can I reboot or start the phone..?and can I save my contacts?
My note 4 randomly freezes and goes to black. It also randomly restarts, gets stuck, and then restarts again. It's very annoying, if I want to check something, I hit the home button and the phone is frozen on the lock screen. Random apps are also crashing but instead if just closing the app my phone's screen just shuts off and I can't get into the phone for at least a minute. I don't know what the problem is and I really don't want to factory reset my phone.
I would pull the battery and take out the SD card (if you have one) and sim card and boot it up and see if that helps.
If u r using de-bloatware app then try restoring all the apps.
Factory reset, don't install anything and see if it continues. Then start installing a couple of apps till it happens again, try to identify the offending
App.
Same here.. Just started happening 2 weeks ago.. I have yet to find the offending app. ****ing ATT and their ****ty note 4 ughhhh
Happening to me too. Even after factory reset, and in Safe mode. I think it is from the June 16, update. I plan on taking it in to the att store and having them flash the new update to the phone. Thinking maybe my over the air update got screwed up somehow.
I put mine on ultimate power saving mode at night to keep it from dying since I forgot my charger. When I woke up, I tried to turn off ultimate power saving mode, but the option was gone. I rebooted and it got stuck at the att boot logo. I took it to the att store and they said I'd have to file a claim on insurance and that they can't fix it.
I cane home and connected it to adb to see if I could back up my files. Without sending a command to it, it wiped itself and factory reset. I lost everything, but since then I have had no issues.
Mine started doing this a couple of weeks ago. Factory reset twice, sd card out. Still doing it. Had to go back to note 3. With sd card and sim card out it seems to work ok on WiFi only.. No stuttering or force closes since?

Mine was doing the same thing. Turns out the battery was taking a crap. New battery and no more issues. For myself at least.
Mine is unusable. It boots into download mode half the time after factory reset. When I get it to boot up it only lasts for 15 minutes then resets again and gets stuck

Try what I did accidently. Connect to your pc. Boot into recovery lode and see if you can connect with adb. Then connect to with adb sideload and let it sit there. Maybe send a few commands and see if it will do like mine. It might get it to unhang. You might lose everything if it restores, but it might do like mine.

Mine mostly ok, albeit chained to at&t FIRMWARE, but I do get an odd eeror: when in a call the phone will make a a keypad tone,as though I'm leaning on the keypad [not], often mid-Bluetooth handsfree calls. It last 2-4 seconds, long enough to interrupt the flow of a call. anyone ?
I have had tons of apps update as of late. I too am experiencing lag, lock ups, black screen. I thought I was alone.
Had a friend's Note 4 do the same only he was on Sprints network. He was not rooted and on MM. I tried a factory reset and it helped for an hour or two then it went back to random rebooting or apps freezing. I tried flashing factory software through ODIN. It was good for an hour then went back to random reboots and apps freezing. I tried another ODIN flash without restoring any of his apps and the same thing happened. I tried changing the battery and that wasn't it, I removed the SD card and that wasn't it either.
He had to take it to Sprint and they ended up just giving him an S7.

I started having this problem just after the update. I tried to switch the battery out and tried to take SD card out. I factory reset it about 3 times now. Nothing has solved it.
I took it into AT&T, and even though I'm not under warranty anymore (had phone for almost 2 years now), they worked with me and ended up giving me a new s7.
I suggest you go talk to AT&T because this is a problem with all AT&T Note 4's. Tell them you want it fixed and talk to the managers and get them to contact the corporate help desk. Don't leave without them fixing it. You paid $900 for this phone.
Gave you a new S7? Or swapped it out on a next contract?

I did not pay a dime. But you have to show them that it freezes and crashes even after they factory reset it
Just left an [email protected] store. He looked at me like I had 3 heads. He had never heard of such. Will call corporate and work my way down.
I did hold a S7 edge.... it was a thing of beauty and speed. No ir though... it's why I like note 4
Works without sim
I've had the exact same issues, (Galaxy Note 4 on AT&T). Tried factory reset, wiping cache, re-flashing with odin, removing SD card, removing apps, multiple batteries, etc.... the only thing that has worked so far is removing the SIM card. It runs flawless without it. Currently using my S3 for calls and text and use the note 4 like a giant iPod touch on wifi only. Hoping this is a software issue AT&T will correct but knowing them..... best bet is probably to wait until August and get the new Note 7.
Why not try the MM update that is out right now, it´s not an OTA but by just renaiming the file to update.zip, putting it in your ds card and applying it through recovery you will have a practically new phone, it´s worth the try.
I´m ruuning it and it´s been great so far, no bugs, no errors.
