root nexus without using usb cable? - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

hi. i want to root my nexus but the usb port of the device doesn't work anymore after i tripped over the usb cable while it was charging. now the device isn't recognized by windows(and mac too), so i can't connect it to my pc. is there a way to root the device wirelessly?

If you have WIFI, then you can download any number of utilities designed to do this. There's even one that allows you to do adb over wifi.
Google is your friend.

haven't found any app that doesn't require root or one-time usb connection before connecting through wifi. can you provide links to the utilities you're reffering to?

By Googling "root without usb" here are some of the results. Please note that I haven't vetted any of them for malware, etc. So, be careful:

There are literally thousands more results, but I've done my due diligence on this one today.

What exactly was wrong with the great answer to your question in the post above yours? All three links provided you in that post are viable options. You have a unique problem, if you don't want to do any reading, learning, or work to solve it, good luck, your tab isn't going to root itself. Your best option is to just repair the USB port yourself with replacement OEM parts. I've done it myself on a couple devices, not that hard.

none of the links worked. quickdraw86 the couple devices you repaired were n7 2013? bc there's a big chance to crack the back cover.

You can try this link, I think that would work.

Ah. That makes sense. I replaced USB ports on falcon, toro, and n7 2013, yeah. You're right about the back cover, just need to be careful, and, besides that, i didn't care about cracking the cover at that point, my tab was almost unusable without USB port working. EBay has some decent deals on parts, I have a "cadaver" flo at home I can salvage from if need be for repair purposes.

i thought about replacing the usb port, but my n7 is in mint condition and didn't want to crack the back cover. alligator_asl you the man! thanks everyone for your help.

[Q] Phone stopped charging?

My phone just doesn't charge anymore.. I've googled and googled. I found one page where a guy said to push up on the tongue of the port to get it centered, but that didnt help at all. I've tried multiple cords with no luck. So I have two questions. What is better to go to for help. My verizon store? Or talk to them on the phone? And if i do, would i need to return to stock? No wait, 3.. if i do need to return to stock, how would i do that with a dead phone? I posted a question on rootz aswell with no solutions yet, maybe y'all will have some ideas. Thanks ahead!

Had the same problem recently. It's a hardware issue, the only way to fix is to change the board inside the phone than contains the USB port.
And there is unfortunately no way of re-locking the bootloader, since your phone won't get a connection to a computer due to the dead port.
I looked around in an local Android forum and found someone who could fix my phone for a very fair price. The USB board is not expensive, you can get one on ebay for about 10 dollars
Hop this helps.

Thanks for the response, Im chatting with samsung support right now. Do you have the link of the repair guy?

HALP, USB port is borked

My computer can't see my phone via ADB or anything else, and the phone won't charge. I'm positive it's a USB port issues, as I have been able to connect to my phone before, flash ROMS, move files back and forth, etc. I've tried different cables and different USB ports. USB debugging is turned on.
I want to return the phone to stock before I try returning it. Is there a way I can do this without a USB port? Maybe use a stock nandroid or something? (even if I could do this last step, I'm not sure how I'd relock the bootloader)
you could use this to lock the bootloader https://play.google.com/store/apps/...wsMSwyLDEsIm5ldC5zZWd2MTEuYm9vdHVubG9ja2VyIl0. flash a stock rom that you could download from a web browser and you should be good

no problem
Post 3 of my guide has a link to return to stock and locked with no USB access.
If you want to do it without Mobile Odin, there is a (free) way. See here. I've set it up for maguro, but you can easily replace all the maguro images with the toro ones. Then use segv11's BootUnlocker app (linked earlier) to re-lock the bootloader.
Thanks guys, exactly the info I was looking for. I appreciate the speedy replies!
Also, there just seems to be a generalized hardware problem with the Galaxy Nexus' USB port, I myself sent my device in because of it, and they put in a new USB port which helped prevent the problem for a week and I was extremely frustrated when it came back, and of course XDA being the lifesaver Paradise, I learned that if you get a small object like a flat-head jewelry screwdriver and slide it under the tongue of the port and apply small amounts of upward pressure (But not too much, because if it breaks you could void your warranty) to the tongue. Apparently the Nexus' port shorts out when touching the bottom of the phone, I have been good for about a month with no problems. You could try this before warranty.

[Q] Am I screwed?

So I am having an issue with my USB port, it seems loose, and will only charge if the cable is pushed upwards a bit. It is also unable to connect to a computer. My question is, is it possible for me to lock my bootloader without having usb access, or root (root got messed up when I decided to update without attempting to preserve it)? Or gain root without usb? I feel like I'll have to send it in to get repaired/replaced, and from what I've read it will need to be fully stock for that. Thanks
Depends how the usb is broken. May be easily repaired yourself. Any chance you can get a pic up so we can help better?

Been having the same charging problem, can't get adb to recognize the nexus. I've uninstalled/reinstalled the drivers. Doesn't matter if I use another USB. If anyone has another solution I'd love to hear it.
Try cleaning the bottom of the opening with a sharpened toothpick or paperclip with the battery removed. If that doesn't help try gently prying the tongue inside the charging port away from the wall.
This worked for me.

I already have tried 2 other cables, and have had no luck unfortunately. All exhibit the same issue, so it's most likely the port.
At the moment I'm able to charge my phone if I prop the cable on something or use some other method to sort of push the jack upwards slightly, so maybe something is loose?

google it....i'm finding a lot of info about it simply being dirty inside the charging port. makes sense when you think about it. mine's in my pocket all the time, the port doesn't ever get covered and lint/etc builds up. i watched a few youtube videos. one guy used a really small sewing needle. another used a bigger one but filed it down. both said their charger felt loose when they plugged it in and afterwards it would lock like it was brand new. haven't had a chance to see if i've got anything small enough to do this yet but i'm willing to bet that that's my problem, and maybe yours as well. soon as i get around to it i'll post back again. and if you try it, be careful not to damage the connection inside

Help! USB not working, alternate ways to flash stuff.

Hello!
I have a Z1 compact with:
model number: D5503
with android 4.4.4 14.4.A.0.157
Usb port aint working, I have no idea why, I bought the phone from a girl and she didnt know what caused it. I have a feeling that she updated from 4.4.3 and something stopped working. When I try to use the diagnostics app that comes with the phone, it crashes and closes itself. The phone also tells me that there is an update available, 14.5.A.0.270, but it wont let me update it, it says "computer required"... So you see, if I cant use the usb port, how am I supposed to update it with a computer
I managed to root it using KingRoot (damned thing installed me an app that made my vibrator go crazy.. it stopped after I uninstalled it)
Ive been trying to find out ways to install recovery and flash the update, but I cant seem to find a way. I found about flashify and tried to instal NUTs dual recovery but flashify just crashes when I choose "select zip" or even when I try "select image" at the install recovery menu. Any ideas on how to proceed?
Thanks!!
If it still has warranty, you should return it. Without a working USB, you're pretty much screwed, sorry to say...
Can't you install ROM Manager from the Play Store, then install CWM or TWRP recovery, transfer a known working ROM wirelessly to the SD card and flash that?

Ok, didn't check that. Are you sure there is a problem with the USB port on the device? Maybe try changing the USB cable, some are low quality and don't make good contact. Maybe something went wrong during the update and it is just a software problem that can be fixed with a factory reset. If there is no warranty left, you could open up the phone and check for physical damage.
And if all that doesn't work, see reply #1.

I think it is.. I tried to charge it with an official sony cable and nothing happened, although I dunno if the cable is totally compatible because it came with my live with walkman phone. Maybe the jack is messed up. If everything fails I might buy a new one and change it, and see what happens. I did a factory reset but still nothing happened. I found out that theres another flash tool app called Rashr, I dunno if I could update to lollipop with it. For now I should find an .img file of a recovery that works for my device, any ideas?
thanks btw!
If the cable can transfer files and charge your Walkman it should work with your phone too.
You could try this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2620794 but I can't guarantee it will work. Maybe it is better to stick with what you have and not take the risk.

Nope, doomlords recovery wont work with my version but hey! I guess you're right! At least the phone is fully functional, except for the usb thingy. I'll just seize the day haha, thanks!!
How're you going to charge it?
If it still charges you can use it how it is, if not you're screwed.
You can't use the ROM manager stuff on the Sony phones because they don't use a normal recovery like the rest of the Androids. It has it's advantages as it's hard to really brick it but if the USB socket doesn't work you've got nothing to work with.
So find out if it's in warranty, if it is get it fixed. If it isn't you might have to fix it yourself or pay to get it fixed.
Although if it charges you could just use it how it is until you can pick up another phone, probably the Z3 compact if you like this size.
Fortunately the magnetic charging port does work it takes its time to charge tho :/
Maybe I shouldn't tempt you but have you tried this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/son.../stock-d550314-5-0-270customized-ce1-t3115487 with that Rashr app? It includes a recovery and is prerooted.
Ahh of course!
As you can tell I haven't had a Sony phone long, although I use the magnetic dock all the time!
It might be worth asking a few shops for a quote to fix it. I spoke to a guy who fixed phones for a living yesterday, he wouldn't give me many tips but he did let me know that Sony phones were all heat based to pull apart. Said they weren't easy, which is what I'd gathered.
I guess he doesn't want to answer questions as he'd rather do it for me and have me pay him!
Do a factory reset and teardown and clean the phone.

FYI, i recently opened mine with the help of a small travelling hair dryer and some prying tools. It was a 10 minute job. There are lots of videos on YouTube too. You just need some new adhesives or good double-sided sticky tape to put it back together. You will probably lose the waterproof sealing though.

Hair dryers ftw! I do need to open it up, to change the housing because its all girly pink.. Although after a quick look I cant tell the phone seals have already been broken, so someone tried to open it and didnt close it properly. Ive been looking for spare parts online and Ive found some pretty decent ones. Battery cover, frame and stickers. They come from china so I wouldnt risk figuring out if the phone is still waterproof after the "refurbishing".
If you're gonna replace the battery cover, might as well go for the japanese glass version (z1f).

USB Connector Connected / Disconnected

I have had my Note 10+ for about over a week now. Last night I used samsung pay and it started flashing
"Android System USB Connector Connected"
"Android System USB Connector Disconnected"
I have searched online and have tried a few different things.
I can reboot the phone and it will work fine for a few hours and then it starts doing it again. I do not have case on the phone and the USB port is fine. (From what I can see.)
Any Ideas

The C port PCB maybe defective. A couple SM mosfets, caps and resistors on it.
Relatively easy to change out, a $20 part*. Make sure you ID it by the PN# on it. If you get the wrong one you'll lose your mobile connection... so I learned recently
There's at least 2 variants for the 10+ and some parts guys aren't too bright.
Make sure to try at least one known good cable first. A cable failure is more likely.
*always nice to have a spare one handy.

Less questions that don't have any answers.
Larger adaptation means most of the bugs if not worked out are at least well known.
Stock Android are also nearly impossible to crash and burn barring acts of gross stupidity.
Lol, if I want to play with demons I still have W7.
