Hello, I bought the elementalx apk from the app store and quickly realised that life isn't that simple and I needed to flash my device with an elementalx kernel.
I run a nexus 7 2013 wifi only tablet, rooted and on 4.3 (JSS15Q). There are lots of different kernel links to choose from and as a noob am unsure if I need to flash a kernel specific to my jellybean operating system.
I also flip between flashing different operating systems quite a bit depending on what I am doing, will the kernel affect this?
Any help gratefully received.
IMO you should update to Marshmallow, do a nandroid backup then flash the elemental kernel, then install the elemental app. As far as i know the app is only for tuning the kernel and doesnt flash it. If you have a pc try using the excellent Nexus Root Toolkit it makes things really easy good luck
I just looked there are no elementalx kernels for 4.3 so you will have to update your nexus

I believe it's ElementalX 1.8 that you need for JSS15Q 4.3;

Also, Bulletproof kernel by Flar2 will work, see this thread;

Hi I am new to rom and kernel flashing, and I am interested in flashing the ElementalX 1.1 kernel on AOKP. I love AOKP, and I am way interested in the swipe-to-wake and double-tap-to-wake features of ElementalX 1.1.
What kinds of things do I need to know about compatibility between kernels and Roms? Can you typically use any kernel with any rom?
Loving the Nexus experience and looking forward to learning more!
They often can but not always.
Android versions need to match.
Usually you can flash any kernel on any ROMs but if its a CM based ROM and you flash a custom kernel then slimport features sometimes don't work or some times you flash a custom kernel then the boot animation gets cut and turns black it doesn't really matter I have done lots of flashing and I would say that every kernel can be a flashed with any ROM without problems I am currently on CM kang and using kernel elemental x and everything runs smooth..hope this help click thankksss
Don't just slap any kernel to your device you might seriously brick it.....learned this lesson when I had an Atrix4G.....

Nexus devices are different then the Atrix4G. You can not seriously brick it by flashing an incompatible kernel. Even having no kernel will not prevent you from accessing the bootloader and recovery.

Well first its not room, its ROM
Second
A ROM is android itself, when you install a ROM, you install a new version of android, and replace the old one, a ROM includes all parts of android
The main part is /system
That is what makes android look like android
/data is where all of the user stuff is stored
A new android installation wipes(erases all data) from both of these
A kernel is different
A kernel is a piece of software that runs underneath android and let's the operating system communicate with all the hardware that's on the phone, with out a kernel, your phone won't boot into anything
Kernels are very specific, you can't install a sense kernel with an aosp ROM, the kernels have to also be compatible with the ROM you want to run as well
Usually(in fact, its rare in the case that it doesn't happen), when you install a rom, you also install the kernel for that ROM, such as a CyanogenMod kernel and a CyanogenMod ROM, but not the other way around
If you ever want to install a custom kernel, install it AFTER you install a ROM, or else when you install the ROM, you will overwrite the custom kernel

Thanks you both for the help.
So which one is the best ROM for my T999?

Up to your preference, I prefer CM10.x, other prefer TW-based ROMs, there is no answer to that question. Look through and pick one, you don't like it, try a different one.
And if you run into terms or other things along the way, search xda for a lousy of definitions. There's a couple of pretty good ones that you may want to bookmark for quick reference. Also read the stickies.

I just got my new 2013 Nexus with the latest KK4.4.4 pre installed.
I normally always flash a custom ROM right away when I get a new device. I've unlocked and rooted right away but is there any real advantage of now flashing something like Cyanogen stable or nightly? I'd appreciate any advice or knowledge of any advances from here.
Thanks

Don't flash Cyanogen because it's not good. But you need to flash something because if stock had any less options, they would number in the negatives.
Paranoid Android is a really good and stable ROM. It doesn't have as much features as Cyanogen, but it has definitely more than Stock. I'm also using ElementalX kernel and it's excellent too. Would surley recommend both...
Right now I'm running CleanRom 4.4.4 + Xposed w/gravity box & Cool Tool (which is an app with xposed functionality not a stand alone module).
So far it's all great and running smooth. Before I used to just run stock rooted with Xposed (and CWM recovery). The benefit of Xposed is that you don't need to flash roms to get the tweaks you want, I'd highly recommend it.

Haven't ran any after market ROMS on the Nexus 5x yet but used to be a CM fan prior to the "shut down". Although I read the devs went to Lineage, just haven't done a whole lot of research on it just yet. By looking through the forums, it looks like my woes are the same as many others. I.e. poor battery life, declining performance, low sound volume ect.
Anyone have a recommendation on a decent ROM and/or MODs to start out with? Any advice would be greatly appreciated so I can get a head start on researching.
My personal suggestion to you would be to stick with the stock rom but use a custom kernel. Often when people are talking about how bad their performance is on their phone it is because their kernel isn't configured correctly.

I will agree with this. I was running the stock ROM with a kernel for a long time, and it was great. I recently wiped everything and switched to Pure Nexus, but that's cuz I wanted to try F2FS.
My daily driver is PixelRom. Stable enough and looks refreshing among all custom roms that I have tried before. Its stock based, easy install all in one with bootloader and vendor, kernel franco for a bit better battery life. Swansong sound mod…

I use stock + greenify + lucky patcher + Xposed. Seems to work ok for me so far batterywise. It's my personal opinion more mods more problems so I try to keep it simple.

By using Xposed, I'm assuming you're running MM?

Oh yeah. MM right out of the box
Pure Z Rom here 7.1.2 stock based with franco kernel
I don't find any custom rom for daily use without problem
Hello everyone. I was just wondering what people were using for a good performance custom rom and kernel. Atm I'm using the stock pie software and NSFW-Kernel 25 custom kernel. The phone keeps freezing on me and rebooting. Not sure if this is because I'm using custom kernel with stock os? Thanks for all the help I've gotten in this forum on my rooting adventure, you all are the best and I appreciate it.
I'm using Pixel Dust ROM with King Kernel flashed. Wiped my phone and clean installed everything, works smoothly and quickly.

I'm also using Pixel Dust ROM with it's own Kernel. I also wipe the phone and clean install everything from start, not using the restore feature. I sync Contacts, Calendar and Tasks between the phone and MS Office 2016 using MyPhoneExplorer (free App). Phone history and texts are not transferred but I keep a copy on the PC through MyPhoneExplorer.
This type of clean install has always given me the best results for performance and a stable phone no matter which custom ROM I try.
The best way to find out is to start flashing ROMs and see which one you like best. What I like or feel is the best will be subjective. Try them all and see what fits you best.
Thanks for all the feedback. I was thinking of trying lineage os, but I don't think v15 is pie and v16 that's based on pie isn't out yet I believe. Also was gonna try the elemental x kernel.
That kernel is good if you are on stock. It can act odd on certain ROMs other than stock.
