WiFi settings corruption on G Pad X8.3. - G Pad 8.3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Recently, I've seen sporadic reports of WiFi settings getting corrupted on non-rooted devices, and I've wondered how that could happen with any kind of regularity. I've also seen that some phones with Android v6.0 have a settings feature to erase the WiFi settings, which I found even more curious. Finally, I also notice that, while previous factory resets allowed Google to restore previously-saved WiFi settings, that doesn't seem to happen any more, at least with my devices.
Well, I think I've found the answer: Put a question mark ("?") in a WiFi password, and you are screwed (unless you are rooted). Deleting the WiFi network data doesn't fix it. Deleting all settings via the settings menu item doesn't fix it.
A factory reset fixes it. I did one on Saturday and restored all my apps, and entered the passwords for two WiFi networks, and all was OK. Added the third WiFi network with a password containing a "?", and voila! If I then switch WiFi networks manually, I get the message "Unfortunately, WiFi has stopped" or "Unfortunately, Settings has stopped." Note that the network switch occurs successfully; it's just that the WiFi component of Settings has apparently crashed (probably when trying to parse and update "wpa_supplicant.conf" or its equivalent on v5.0).
So, I'm in the middle of a 2nd factory reset/restore, and needless to say, I've changed two of my WiFi networks to remove the "?" from their passwords.
Note that this only happens to me on my two LG G Pad X8.3 tablets (running stock v5.0.2). So far, this has not happened my LG G3 (on stock v5.1.1), which accessed the same WiFi networks with the same passwords (now changed).
Unless you are about to factory reset your G Pad (whatever variant you have), I wouldn't recommend trying this, but if you are about to do so, it would be interesting to try this just before you do the reset.

Very interesting! Good to know no matter what.
I've also observed how WIFI hotspots and passwords don't get restored at all anymore. I miss it. I don't know why Google removed that (unless it's OEMs who did - I rarely try CM-based ROMs) and then still left in the erroneous information that WIFI hotspots and passwords will be restored.

Perhaps Google heard of WiFi settings being corrupted, but didn't know the cause. If so, restoring a corrupted settings file after a factory reset, would certainly be a real problem!
Note that there is an app for potentially fixing this ("FXR WiFi fix and rescue"), but it reports "not compatible" in Google Play.

One more thing....

However, after a factory reset, if you restore your settings using the LG Backup built-in feature from a backup with the corruption, you will propagate the corruption onto your newly-reset device. The visible WiFi settings are not restored, but something is corrupted!
It is unknown (at least to me) as to whether restoring uncorrupted settings data from a previous backup, will fix the problem on a corrupted device.

GPRS not connecting??

I have done multiple searches and have not found anything. WIFI works, but gprs will not connect, i've tried disabling proxy and everything. I am currently using schaps 3.60a and the error i get is the answering modem has disconnected to check your connection settings click setting tab. I have not seen this error before. I've flashed multiple 8525's before. I have one working perfectly fine, and this is a second one i followed the exact same steps but gprs will not work no matter what.
I'm suddenly having an identical or almost identical problem on VP3g's ROM. My Wifi connection with PIE works fine and I'm getting push e-mail delivered. But when I try to connect off WiFi as I had always done before, I get the message:
"Cannot connect with the current connection settings. To change your connection settings, tap Settings"
I've checked my settings and they seem correct and the same I always used. I've checked to see that my NoData settings were not inadvertently set wrong, but Media Net is Enabled. I've tried flushing temp files and cookies. I even tried erasing them and then reestablishing them by going online with WiFi. Finally I also tried using Opera.
Nothing works. This is maddening
The only thing strange or different is that I had set HTC Custom for temp files to be on my SD Card and when I now tried to set them on main memory (to see if somehow that might work) I get a series of error messages each time and files remain on SD.
Is it possible for the radio for gprs to be corrupt?? Or it could it be something simple as a registry edit? On the phone it is instantaneous when you try to connect to gprs it kicks back that message right away. So i know for sure gprs/edge is inop. Not sure why though.
Check with your operator
It happens to me once in a while even when the "E" shows up in the display indicating Edge abailability, but reality is that the network is down or highly congested.
chhuong I think you are right and it must be a corrupt registry entry. I know that the visible settings are correct.
It occurred to me that I have been using NODATA to turn off GPRS reception whenever I wanted to use Wifi and perhaps one of the times I set it to be disabled and then enabled it again, it must have been left as disabled even though it "says" that it has been re-enabled. Also I had a problem trying to change the cache from Main to SD, and would keep on getting errors whenever I did, using HTCustom. So probably at some point some registry corruption must have crept in. Unfortunately I've become too lazy to open the registry editor and dive in to find out where it might be.
Anyway, I finally got tired of it not working and used the problem as an excuse to move from VPG's 3.60.1 to 3.60.2. I reflashed this morning and it's been fine ever since. This time I won't use NODATA.
well actually i've tried flashing multiple roms and multiple radios, and nothing, still no gprs? So mine might be an internal fault?? Has anyone ever heard of that happening??
have you tried: start - settings - connections -connections - advanced - select networks - Media Net? Reverse it back to my network when you to use WIFI.
I've got similar problem after reflashing. Try to run Shap's Advanced configuration tool, select Connections tab and click Enable HSDPA. Don't ask me why, but it helped me to solve the problem, even there is no HSDPA available here...
I am having the same problem but i dont think its schaps rom, i think it happened either after i installed the 1.54.10 radio or after i installed the shogun cabs. If a moderator or senior could point us in the right directions, it would be much appreciated.

I tired that many times, but it didnt help, thanks anyways.
FWIW, I was able to clear this up the last time it occurred by going in to Menu > Tools > Options > Memory and clearing the History, deleting files and clearing cookies, then soft reset, and everything was okay.
Try this cab http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=54309&d=1192447925, and if it doesnt work try enabling hspda, and if that doesnt work, try calling your provider and ask them to make sure that your account is enabled for data. I tried all that, then, because i dont have a data plan, but i use pay per usage, i went to ATT's site and added a data plan. Now it works, so i think its disabled on ATT's side. previous phones wifi networks do not transfer to G4 no matter what

hello,
this may be slightly less of a G4 question and more of a Android in general issue (for me) but for now since the G4 is what I am having trouble with I'd really love to get any suggestions or help from folks. First go-round old wifi networks did not transfer over. Here is troubleshooting I've done:
old phone: vzw razr m, unlocked and w/ GPE rom. Have reset it that and have reverted back to stock and reset. in both cases after reset all old wifi networks show up. So they appear to be backed up in the cloud on google's end.
1) Have told old phone to not backup data (warns it will erase data). Then told it to backup...then tried to reset G4 and sync gmail account. none of the old phone's wifi networks port over to the G4.
2) On old phone have set up secondary, brand new gmail account, synced data to it, removed primary gmail account. wifi networks now still in old phone, synced to new account now. reset G4 and use this new account, no wifi networks
3) have tried login and NFC touch and go or whatever.. neither transfers wifi networks
...various permutations, making things are synced, rebooted, reset...fresh on both sides.. I cannot seem to get the damn wifi networks to the G4.
What on earth differently can I do? I am super stumped and all apps that seem to deal with this require root which is not yet avail on my G4. Please help...anyone?
as a last resort sometime later (indeterminate) assuming VZW G4 gets rooted... can I use my titanium backed up access points from the Rarz M and restore them using titanium on the G4?
Thank you!
Coming from the Note 4 I have the same issue. None of my WiFi networks transferred over. Initially I thought it was something I did, so I reset a total of 3 tines in the beginning. WiFi on, WiFi off, and blah blah blah. Nothing worked.
I just dealt with it and moved on. I'm sure you can restore the saved ones once we have root.
I've never had a phone do it with my last 4 phones. Google issue, not G4
Sent from my G4 using your mom
Thanks for the confirmation Dennis. Yeah I had no real thoughts it was uniquely specific to G4 hardware, only possibly something with the system setup/software esp since verizon has their own little setup module it seems. What a kick in the pants. It's super frustrating!
Had the same problem here as well. Glad I am not the only crazy one.
same here too. since no root I just copied the wpa_supplicant.conf file off my old GS5 and keep it stored somewhere i can use a file manager to open and look for the password for a particular wifi that i had saved. annoying but could be worse, especially since some of the networks i had saved, the places wont give out their password anymore.

Returned home from short trip, Wifi connects but does not function

As the title says, I didn't change anything about the phone's configuration when I was out, didn't download any new apps or change any settings that would interfere like this. No one else has changed my home network in my absence.
Nevertheless, most of my apps, such as Instagram, the Play Store, Twitter, Wikipedia, Chrome; almost all their requests time out. There seem to be short windows where data will load, and Instagram appears to load comments and post metadata, but no images. It's basically unusable. Occasionally an exclamation mark will pop up over my Wifi symbol in the notification center. Strangely, I can still reach my Steam and Battle.net authenticators, but the moment I try loading the Steam app, nothing comes up. It's like the device can only handle plaintext over Wifi.
All of the apps work fine over cellular data.
Also, there is a toast that appears whenever I restart my phone that says "Power On" that I've never noticed before. I was rooted using Xposed, the only modules I used were Snapprefs, Xinsta, Physical Button Music Control, and Greenify Experimental Features, all of which I uninstalled. The toast still appears with the latter two disabled. Only other rooted apps I had besides Xposed were Nova Launcher, Greenify, Busybox, and Root Checker Basic, all of which have been removed but Nova.
I am running 6.0.1 with the latest update.
Any ideas? I am still within 15 day warranty so I could theoretically return the phone (which I was contemplating doing anyhow since 10gb of functional storage is a bit too small for me), but would rather not have my hand forced, and eat into my cell data plan.
So far I have tried forgetting the network, wiping cache/dalvik with TWRP, removing the Google VPN, resetting all network settings, and a couple things I can't remember offhand now. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

First, if you want to return your device because the 16gb model doesn't have enough space, go ahead.
If it is mostly because of this WiFi issue, I wouldn't return the device, it is almost certainly the case this is some configuration issue (possibly in concert with some Android bug) which can be resolved.
Is it possible when you came home the device connected to a neighbor's AP and thus you couldn't use data, but it wasn't immediately obvious, so you ended up forgetting your own network and reentering the config, but the key was off by a little, and from that point on, it was just assumed the wifi config was correct?
When you say Google VPN, are you using WiFi Assistant and Project Fi? Have you tried disabling auto-connect fir the WiFi Assistant?
Have you tried using the old Lollipop DHCP client (perhaps your IP address got used by another device and the new Android client doesn't handle that well?) Just grasping at straws.
Have you tried turning on Bluetooth while WiFi is on? Perhaps there is a bug with them working independently of each other in certain situations.

I am 100% positive I am on my own home network and that I used the correct key. I'm not sure what you mean with regards to the rest of the 'config', I have always used the standard wifi configuration, just typed in my key and had it work.

I actually forget what it was called, it was under Settings>Wireless&Networks>More>VPN. There was one entry there with an icon. I forget the name of it, but the icon looked like a stock Google icon and I think it had google in the name. I am on Project Fi, not using any wifi assistant (at least not in Advanced Wi-Fi Settings), but when I tried to toggle that option on just now, something called "VpnDialogs" crashed, so I assume that VPN entry was that. But again, the assistant wasn't on.

I did, when I first googled this was one of the things I found, sadly it did not help.

I don't use Bluetooth, and trying to toggle it off/on from the control center just gives me a repeated "unfortunately, Bluetooth Share has stopped" error message.
I have decided to get the 32GB 5X since I do want more storage, but since I would like to be able to root my phone again and use Xposed, I would still like to hear any other ideas you have for troubleshooting this problem in case it reoccurs.
I reflashed the latest update to see if that would fix it, no dice. When I send the 16GB model back I have to factory reset it anyway, so I suppose I'll know if that does it.
What puzzles me is why I can load text from instagram posts that have been posted while I've been having this problem, but not images. Makes me think that maybe my connection is being super throttled somehow rather than non-functional, but my PC's speeds are normal. Perhaps some internal part is damaged? I do have a case and it hasn't taken any serious tumbles, but it has had one or two small falls from maybe 2 feet high.

It is easy to test if you have some network connection vs none.
In terminal or adb shell
ifconfig wlan0
ping www.google.com
1st command will tell you (among other things) if your wlan picked up an IP address.
2nd command will test whether you can send ping packets over your connection.
I'm sure there are millions of ways of doing the above, I just gave you one example.
Strangely, the solution seems to have come from factory resetting my router. I ruled this out initially because my other old phones were working fine on wifi, my phone is now getting WiFi again.
Now to figure out what the hell this "Power On" toast is about...

I've encountered something similar where the router runs out of NVRAM space because it has recorded too many DHCP clients, it won't hand out new IP addresses, but if you are existing or already have one, it is fine.

restored from full dd-image, settings are still gone

So here's a difficult question and hardly anyone has done what I did...
I wanted to restore my old G3 on my new G3 (both D852 models). I had dd images from my old phone and dd'd them back onto the new phone.
I restored userdata(44), cache(43), System(42), boot(18) and modem(1) of course. Then I booted and everything started quickly. However, the ROM (Fulmics 6.9) settings are totally gone or reset (like the settings menu is back to tab view instead of my preferred list view). Not sure what else might be screwed.
I then also restored sbl1(2) and misc(32), booted again and no change.
What is going on here? Why are the settings gone? Where are they stored? Could it be the fact that it's a different device and IMEI that resets the settings?
I thought settings are in system or data and all these weird partitions like EFS are not used to store any settings that are generally accessible from a ROM? Someone knowledgeable here to educate me, please?
Things are getting really weird. First I found this really weird problem and solution.
But all things are not good as my VPNs are completely greyed out under the "More" page below "Mobile Networks". I haven't found anyone with this problem.
The other problem is that I get the message "Wi-Fi is not available in airplane mode" whenever I want to turn on Wifi with cell signal off. One guy had that issue but no solution.
I also restored the tz partition and got a strange status page after booting up, but no other effects or improvements noted..
figured it out, a whole bunch of environment variable went missing somwhere - wish I knew where they are stored.
For the wifi without airplane mode it is airplane_mode_toggleable_radios that has to be there and that fixed VPN as well for some reason.

A similar thread was made on the subject - link here https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-10+/help/android-10-5g-wifi-dropping-t4037661
For practical intents and purposes it's almost like when the issue happens the phone is not able to resolve a DNS query. I base this on 2 hypothesis - first being that the phone is still connected to the wifi access point and can still access LAN resources. The second being that the phone must either poll the internet (i.e ping a specific address) on a regular basis. If the poll was unsuccessful it flags the connection as "WiFi connected but no internet".
The things you can try are:
update the firmware on your phone (if not already)
factory data reset (read note 1 below)
reset network settings
try a different wireless router (read note 2 and 3 below)
disable private dns (read note 4 below)
If you use tasker create a routine to automate a temporary solution (read note 5)
Notes
The issue maybe a corrupted setting within the phone. I have had similar issues before (not with just this phone) and a factory data reset helped. One thing to take note of is that after the phone had completed it's factory data reset I did not attempt to restore a backup. This is important to keep in mind because any issues that were present (due to corrupted settings) would exist also in the pre-factory data reset backup you made.
With my previous router I had this issue but had since replaced it with a Wifi 6 capable router. After getting the new router I have not had any further issues what so ever. Also make sure your wireless router is up to date on it's firmware. It maybe possible that the wireless router you have is old enough (from when it was released, not from when you bought it) that a replacement might be the only way to resolve the issue.
To help rule out a wireless router issue try using a different one. You can borrow a friend's internet connection for a while, or a public cafe or what ever. Point is you are trying to see if the issue happens again when you are using a totally different wireless access point (by totally different I mean hardware/model and not just renaming the SSID).
I had the issue happen when using private DNS. For what ever reason the issue was with the DNS provider I had choosen. Turning the Private DNS setting off helped resolve the issue. After turning the setting off it may take a bit before the phone recognizes it was turned off, but you can hasten this process by toggling WiFi off and back on.
The Tasker option is one I did and it worked quite well. You may need to adjust the routine to suit your particular needs but it's basically what is at this link here. Best part of this option is that you can have it only activate when your connected to the problematic wifi access point and every X number of minutes (helps ensure that you use it only when needed). The routine (when setup correctly) should run every 10 minutes in where it attempts to access a website and assigns the results to a variable. The variable is then checked to see if it matches a specific result (in this case an error code), and if it does match it will toggle WiFi off and back on (after a brief pause/wait period between toggle off and toggle on) automatically. Granted it sounds like a lot of work, but it's really not that complex. Also I consider this is a temporary solution because you may find that on later firmware updates applied to the phone (or you may end up getting a new wireless router) the issue will have been resolved.
