Looking for help to resolve screen freeze on Galaxy Note 8.0 - Galaxy Note 8.0 (Tablet) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooti

My wife has a Galaxy Note 8.0 and has noted that recently the screen has been freezing on her.
The symptoms that she showed me was after the screen saver kicked in there was no response to get out of the screen saver. This is the default Android screen saver. It appears in such a state the screen does not sense her finger touch. Her Tablet is setup with a password to unlock in such a case and the screen not registering the finger touch would not allow any password entry. She believes this pin/password setup is not related to the problem.
The only recovery method when this non-responsive / freeze occurs (which is fairly frequent) is to hold down the power button and force a restart.
She has the tablet rooted.
Can anyone provide investigate methods and / or a solution to the problem? Possibly apps to provide log files which may log what the problem could be ? Or other approaches as to try as a fix. We checked her settings and did not notice anything untoward.
Many thanks for any or all for suggestions/help.
.

Ever try the spen to wake it out of screen saver?
You can disable screen saver and reboot, then enable it with no security and see of the tablet wakes and goes into home screen.
Being rooted, you must have installed a developer app or two, or even messed with system files at one time. Rooting usually does not cause problems, what causes them is the root utility or uncertified apps. I only recommend two root utilities, one is saferoot and the other is philz recovery. I have been through a lot of developer roms and utilities, and it was very hard to keep a stable tablet after customizing either factory os or tweaking builds.
If the problem does not clear out after my suggestion then a full wipe with cache format and load stock firmware. If running 4.2.2 do not upgrade ro 4.4.2 and if running 4.4.2 don't downgrade to 4.2.2

My wife currently thinks a 'facebook' app is the culpret
Thanks for the suggestions and I'll keep them in my mind.
My wife went on a large app removal effort, in case one of her apps was causing this problem. Yesterday afternoon she remove 'facebook' app and she has not yet since seen this freeze behaviour. Hence she is thinking the Android facebook app caused the problem . . . although its really too early to say at this time.
She plans to monitor for a re-occurence of the freeze, and if the bad behaviour continues then I'll sit down with her and chat wrt some of your recommendations.

[Q] Widgets not updating on home screen, no root or rom changes.

Hi, On 2 LG optimus G pro phones, the home screen widget items stop updating after some short time.
A phone rotation ( landscape portrait) does re-update the home screen and widgets, but is getting frustrating using that method.
Both phones are stock (AT&T), one has some minor OTA updating done, they are neither rooted nor rom changed. I have no intention at this time of rooting it or changing the rom. Please help with ideas that would work without these changes.
This behaviour has not been any different from a Factory reset , which I did prior to final installs. The issue was present from the first 3rd party widget to the phone having 16 switcher widgets and a few program widgets.
Are there any settings on the phone that would change this home screen from dropping off to sleep ? I am sure it saves battery, and might be the purpose of it, but it does not suit my purposes to have this happen.
I have tried many settings, like keeping core control off , etc. But i have not observed any change in this.
Is there any cheap tricks i can apply to get the home screen to run a refresh?
Is there any apps that could be applied to automate a home screen refresh? Like i am using macrodroid to automate other things, and it knows when i have made a widget switch, some app that would force a screen refresh would be a good workaround at this point.
The behaviour would hardly be noticed by somone using the device as a Phone first, and mostly as a phone. My use of the device is more like a Tablet, watching movies browsing the web and playing music and all.
When placing this question I was presented with many similar questions for other 4+ type phones, none of them were solved only Me-Tooed. Any ideas for workaround or cheap tricking the thing into refreshing would be very interesting to me.
thanks.
Tasker + Greenify would work but you'd have to be rooted in order to use Greenify on system apps. I had the same problem as well. I have tasker set up to hibernate my home screen when turning off the screen and waking it up when the device is unlocked. Adding widgets into that would increase your battery life AND keep the widgets working normally when you unlock the screen.

Interesting, because greenify updated rescent , so it can do its tricks without root (manually). applied the "accessability" trick on 4.1+ devices. If that would somehow work, it just leaves trying to automate it with some very simple method, so far i avoided tasker because it is more akin to programming (takes too long to learn nuances), where my level is more like simple scripting, which I got done in minutes with macrodroid.

[Q] LG G3 - Sprint stock having ISSUES after update

I've had the LG G3 through Sprint since last September. All was fine and great with it with Android 4.4.2. Ever since the 5.0.1 upgrade I've had some pretty consistent issues.
1. Laggy on the home screen - hitting home means maybe 2-3 full seconds of blank screen before the icons populate and the screen returns to the designated home screen as opposed to where it was when I entered an app.
2. It destroys app processing VERY quickly - too aggressively. What is the point of 'multitasking' if I leave a game/app to respond to a text or gchat and use the menu/multitasking menu to get back to that game/app and it restarts it like I hadn't been JUST USING IT.
3. ALL BROWSERS on the phone sometimes ***** to me that they can't connect to a Proxy Server. Really? I'm not set up for proxying ANYWHERE. There's also no config to specify that or to specifically turn it on or off.
4. My LTE/3G sucks now. It will consistently downgrade to 3G or just drop all connections. Turning off/on mobile data or doing restarts only sometimes fixes it. I take the Metra to work (above ground train) and before the upgrade I didn't have these issues. I'm also having this issue RIGHT NOW and I'm on the wifi at work. It won't connect.
5. Smart Cleaning doesn't work. It grinds for a minute and then pops me over to the main screen or to the multitasking screen. WTF?
It also takes a while to restart. And I've done all the System Updates (PRL, profile, firmware etc).
What I have NOT done is a factory reset - I just don't want to go through the hassle of that if I don't have to. Though I'm certainly open to the suggestion if it'll solve problems for me. I'm just not understanding if that would work if there's some underlying software/antenna/connection issues.
PLEASE - suggestions are very welcome! I'm very frustrated with this phone. I wish I'd rooted at 4.4.2 and gone with a custom ROM.
TL;DR version
Having laggy issues - what does a Factory Reset gain me in this circumstance? Will it actually fix these kinds of issues? (see above message)
I was having the same exact issues. I finally bit the dust and did a factory reset and it's running 200% smoother now.

[Q] Phone freezes and is slow after all kinds of troubleshooting

Hello,
I've done lots of searching for answers to my questions here and elsewhere and come up empty-handed, so I apologize if I've missed something and this has been covered already.
My phone occasionally runs smoothly and fast, like it's supposed to. More often -- pretty much every time I need to interact with the phone and across all apps I use -- it freezes when I tap on something, whether it's to open an app or interact with an app that's already running. It will completely freeze up for anywhere from five to 15 seconds before reacting, and it's extremely frustrating at times. Sometimes, the screen will time out before I can enter my PIN to unlock it; sometimes when somebody calls and I tap "answer," the phone doesn't react fast enough to actually answer and I miss the call. As I said, very frustrating. It did this both before the update to Lollipop last week, and after.
Here's what I've tried: Hard reset; restarting; deleting or disabling all the apps (including Blinkfeed) I thought I safely could, usually just one or two at a time. I've run it in safe mode, and the phone works normally that way -- I just can't figure out what's making it freeze up. I've run a CPU monitor program, and haven't seen any huge spikes from any apps; and according to the app manager in settings, I typically have about 1G of RAM free.
I'm very hesitant to root the phone, mostly because this is a warranty replacement for a Verizon M7 I had rooted (and returned to stock), and none of the ROMs I tried with the previous phone worked well -- if at all -- with the security policies I am required to use to log in to my employer's Exchange server. Those policies include data encryption.
I'm running stock Lollipop 5.0.2 and Sense 6.0 on Build number 6.22.605.3, Baseband 1.13.41.1209.
If anybody has ideas for me to try, I'd greatly appreciate it. My upgrade date is late August of this year, but it's getting harder and harder to live with this phone, which I absolutely need for my work.
Thank you very much in advance.
It's been a month now since the Lollipop update. I have read through a few threads about performance issues in general after the update. I am going to assume that your phone too has become a victim of the update. I have NOT updated to Lollipop. Mainly because of my recent root and install of TWRP custom recovery, EX Kernel and ViperROM 7.0.2. If these issues aren't resolved, I will not update. Besides, KitKat is doing great for me. I would suspect certain services not running in safe mode that allow the phone to react normally as opposed to all services running in normal mode. Have you contacted VZN and/or HTC for possible t/sing solutions? I see that you have done what I would've done. After failing I would assume it is because of the Lollipop update

System UI Not Responding

Does anyone else get intermittent freezing where the entire phone becomes unresponsive for like 30 seconds? It's not affecting any specific apps, but it does seem to happen often when I'm pressing the home or back button on the navigation bar. Also happens when pressing send in messaging apps. Sometimes it results in ANR, other times it will unfreeze without giving a crash dialog.
Could it possibly be tied to battery optimization and putting apps in deep sleep? I've had this problem on both my Note 10+ and S20 Ultra. Did not have an issue on my Note 8.
Steps taken to remedy situation (but did not fix the problem):
Factory reset
Clear partition cache
Running phone in safe mode (worked, but did not help with determining exact problem)
Setting battery settings to High Performance
Wiping app caches
Stopped using SwiftKey (but still seeing crashes on Samsung Keyboard and Gboard)
Unchecked "Put unused apps to sleep"
Unchecked "Adaptive Battery" setting
YES. This has been happening to me for 6 months now and its trying me crazy. On my ATT Note 20 Ultra. Even after factory reset it eventually came back. I feel like its a hardware problem to be honest because it seems to happy when the CPU or Memory is overloaded or working hard. For example, 2 times I can make it happen is when I update 10+ apps from the playstore and try to do anything else, or when I first turn on my phone and its launching all the startup apps.
Not sure what to do, maybe get a replacement from Samsung or ATT? Just hate having to format yet again.
On thing that did help is yesterday I bought the cloud version of Samsung Package Disabler (i bought these thing like 4 times over the years but thats another story) and I disabled 50 apps that I dont need to run but I dont like the hassle of uninstalling and then reinstalling and the passwords etc. Anyways it def has lessened the issue. Which again is why I think its a hardware problem. Since I lessened the apps running in the background it has lessened the issue.
Anyways if you have any updates on your end please let me know, thanks!

3 screen off issues

Hi everyone.
I have a note 10 + 256 go exynos from france.
SInce about last update one ui2.5, I have seen 3 issues which I think are related.
- AOD tap to show not working
- Double tap to wake not working
- When I remove the phone from the ear during a call the screen does not light up anymore whereas before yes.
I almost returned the phone in warranty a short time ago because my screen only registered two fingers,a few days later I received an update that fixed this problem.
For these 3 problems I tried 3 things :
- Update touch screen firmware via *#2663#
- Factory reset
- Reflash the stock firmware with odin and frija
I also have another problem a few times a day the screen freezes, I have to lock unlock the screen and it works again..
Do you think it's a software problem or a hardware problem (damaged screen, damaged sensor or other)?
Please help me thanks.
Lol, firmware and/or software; maybe a settings or permissions issue as there are many. Hardware rarely fails unless it receives severe abuse. You can perform some of the builtin hardware tests just to be sure.
Try using the factory load if the apk in question has been updated or wait for an update that fixes it. Be sure to check the Gallaxy Store for updates.
I'm still running on Pie because it's fast, stable and functional. No scope storage that I don't want or need.
Once you get an OS optimized and running well there's little advantage to upgrading many times unless the new OS is really worth it.
Many times it's not... I'm still running W7 too.
You invariably end up with new issues, hunting down all new glitches and worse, since it's new there not many online solutions.
Thank you for your help.
I mentioned the 3 main methods of fix but of course before that I had already tried the basic things like clearing the system cache, checking the permissions of the AOD application as well as deleting this data.
I also checked the sensors with * # 0 * # but I did not find anything problematic
I even tried to flash the november update with odin and frija and I got a soft brick, so I don't even dare to try a downgrade firmware, I don't have the knowledge, I read that I had to keep the same bootloader and I get lost in the different firmwares
Those are all system apks that run in the background.
Is Android System configured correctly?
Try clearing it's data and of course the system cache.
A hard reboot as well.
It's interesting you lost the proximity sensor.
Thanks.
Yes I have cleared the system cache several times, android system too. I even did a hard reset. I think more and more of a hardware problem, because all these functions are linked to the fact that the screen does not wake up by touch when it is turned off.
the proximity sensor still works at least partially because it flashes well during a call and turns off the screen when I put the phone to my ear, but no wake up when I take it off my ear.

If it happened after the firmware update... it's in the firmware or software.
Bad firmware can sometimes blowout a cpu but doubt it damaged the hardware controlling just that one feature of the touchscreen.
If that was the case the touchscreen wouldn't work at all.
Maybe the firmware is ok but got corrupted during the download or flash.
A defective memory module could corrupt the load but again that rarely happens.
So back to the firmware/software/settings...
Maybe someone here has seen this before or has a better idea to sort it out.
Honestly I'm not sure it's exactly after an update.
It's just that it's not functions that I use very often. I don't call a lot of people and most of the time I use very little Aod and double tap2wake.
Usually when I grab my phone to use it I unlock it directly with the fingerprint.
when i mentioned the problem where my screen only recognized two fingers at this time , aod and dt2w were already weird as it only worked on the top half of the screen not on the bottom half ..the update solved the problem for the 2 fingers but not for the fact that aod and dt2w only works on the upper half.
Now for some time aod and dt2w no longer work at all no matter where I touch the screen.
I want to clarify that I use a screen protector with loca glue but that it is from the beginning and that it has never been a problem before.
I know this is a weird problem thanks for your patience
I never use a lock screen or the fingerprint sensor.
There may be a conflict because that... disable and see if that helps.
The screen could goof up the proximity sensor. Probably not but next time it's off, check it out.
No worries; these devices fascinate me.
Hope you sort it out; eventually one usually does

2x post
when i did the factory reset it was the first thing i tried before even resetting a password but it didn't work anyway.
For the screen protector I use the same brand from the beginning and it has never caused me a problem of this kind, but maybe this one is defective ..
I would have to remove it to try but I have lazy to change it again because I had to change it twice in a little while.
Hoping that by dint of applying the loca glue I haven't damaged anything.
Thanks
Nah the glue didn't hurt anything; it's well sealed.
The tap on AOD I never use but I double tap to turn the screen on/off. If I lost that I be witch hunting.
Try increasing the touch sensitivity if you haven't already... and make sure no other apps have accessibility permissions that could conflict. Same for device administrator permissions.
Try it in safe mode as well.
