this is based on the XZU recovery for locked bootloaders by @Krabappel2548
This thread will stay a dev and discussion thread for further development issues and fixes!

THIS IS INTENDED FOR LOCKED BOOTLOADER DEVICES! But works on Unlocked bootloader too
THIS IS STILL IN DEVELOPMENT STAGE!
DO NOT EXPECT IT TO WORK PROBLEM FREE!
requirements:
rooted Xperia Z1
how to enter recovery:
when you see the Sony bootlogo and when device vibrates/leds light up u can use the entry keys to enter the corresponding recovery
VOLUME UP -> CWM
VOLUME DOWN -> TWRP
what works:
BOTH CWM 6.0.3.6 and TWRP 2.6.3.0 work
you can enter both recoveries and flash small files
what doesnt work:
in this particular version of CWM, adb doesnt work; it will be fixed later.. for debugging use TWRP
Shoudl be fixed:
TWRP and CWM both can destroy /cache and /system when trying to format it. Restoring your phone using an FTF is the only option left if that happens. You can however try to not format but use rm -rf instead in TWRP (TIC BOX!!), which will do for now.

For anyone who does not own a Z1 (like me) and wants to search through the init actions.

Look also L2 Error detected! in 1089 Line. Usb don't work right and i think because we can't write in memory stack stack(0xe4859e70 to 0xe4859eb8) for lock bootloader. Problem it's in arch / arm / mach-msm but i don't find where!

As DooMLoRD's OP somehow does not fire the mention system... repeat for function

Have you checked against my posted recovery in Z Ultra forums? I can remember there was a similar problem on the locked bl recovery, you guys really seem to screw it somehow.
Also can i get a gdrive link to the files? Then I can grab it over my different systems more easy

It was a self-compiled version by @DooMLoRD, with a ramdisk slightly modified to get it to work for the Z1. What did you do to get it to work on the ZU? @krabappel2548 tried and failed there too...
EDIT: Just to be clear: it's not that the recovery does not work, it does, it's the kernel which triggers a reboot after 40 seconds because it seems to be unable to initialize the modem.

the boot hijack scripts, chargemon, are based on the ones for Xperia Z by @[NUT], with the necessary modifications, if any, for Xperia Z1
the ramdisks for the recoveries are using the same CPIO as the ones for unlocked bootloader...
recovery works well on unlocked bootloader with recovery integrated in kernel ramdisk...

Ok i did some first tests!
My own recovery works (see cm boot.img !). But this one does not work when ramdisk-recovery is integrated into your dualboot script!
So it is definetly a problem with the services from the "host" system. The ramdisks which get extracted also work fine when integrated into cm boot.img!
So wild guess here: You try to stop all services from host system but it seems not to work, since you dont really need anything running for recovery, but some of the host services dont want to stop here and waiting for the system to bootup. SOMETHING seems to reboot it then when nothing is happening
Need to see deeper whats happening, its quite a funny problem i think

I came to the same conclusion, but I had to give up as I had no idea what services could have been responsible
It might be the RIL service as it slingshots a lot of the radio/modem functionality... But I'm really not too sure...

Did you find anything useful yet?
I've been wandering around in the files again myself, i've checked the qcom modem init already but i rechecked it, it seems that before chargemon is started, it already initialized a lot of the radio/modem hardware... it seems that at least one service is responsible for the communications layer between the kernel and modem, but I have been unable to determine which one... seeing the 40 second timeout before a reboot occurs it probably accounts for the service needing some time to start up.

Since kernel have initiated the modem, is it possible to write a procedure to set smem_get_entry flag. most likely to assign flag one to it.. New to android development..When i program a micro controller..we will be checking a flag in modem to see if it is initiated.. or sometimes.. i assigns a variable or memory address...so instruction will check that location for status rather than checking modem flag...as it takes more cycles...so i think this may be clearing some flags or memory or variable....

I did not had time yet to continue working but boyhood you guys should be correct. I am just thinking of the easiest way to fix it. Give me some more days please

I've had a chat about it with Dees Troy from TWRP about it, he suggested RIL as a possible culprit, or maybe watchdogd...
I don't have a z1 so I'm unable to test it on my own...

For watchdog to reset an unexpected condition should occur.. for that something else have to go wrong...
and not sure- Radio Interface Layer is it not part of baseband?

Yes, it is: so it's tied in with the modem hardware...

I like the design - but it's horrible slow

Why? I use it as a 3x4-type keyboard keys, I did not have any trouble.
You may not like the keyboard, of course just an alternative to the keyboard used
Xperia Z1s started and I'm trying to use the keyboard. I'll share it if I do not have problems. This is more advanced than the keyboard

Installed and worked perfectly on CarbonRom KK nightly
But there is a problem, Every time i reboot, i get the "Android in Upgrading- Optimizing app" message.
It optimizes my apps and takes a long time (I use ART)
It only optimizes user apps , not system apps
It appears on each reboot.
Luckily I had a nandroid backup.
Retried installing the Z Keyboard again , the appeared again.
Does any one know what the problem is ?

Switched to Dalvic and this fixed the problem.
The 2 files that are being put into "System/Framework" are the cause of this problem.

Yeah I knew switching to dalvik would fix it but art makes too much of a difference on my device, even with dalvik and bionic patches applied art still gives my device a much smoother real world feel. Never ran any benchmarks to compare but real world feel is very noticeable on my n4 YMMV of course. Thanks though

So after updating to marshmallow Sammy actually fixed multitasking. I didn't use or even try these settings on android 6.x.x but they should work, if someone tried and tested them on marshmallow leave a comment (post) please
Hey guys so first I want to say most credits for this tutorial goes to this guy, (so you can view original thread and thank him), I'm only going to share, a bit modified version (with some values taken from Xperia Z3 build.prop), maybe better explained for some people.
So short and to the point, it's a quick fix so your phone can multitask up to around 15 apps without closing any of them(in result also increasing battery life as there's almost no need to reload apps, check video at the end of this post to see it in work). The only thing you need is root and around 15 minutes of time if you've never done anything like that. Oh and arter97 kernel is also very helpfull to keep this working as good as possible as it adds some battery and multitasking improvements as well.
So all you need:
ROOT
Custom Kernel (optional but worth it)
Any file manager that supports root (I'm using Root Browser)
First things first:
Open your root browser and navigate to system/ find and make backup of build.prop file (just copy it somewhere on your internal SD so you can always replace it with default one)
Ok now go back to system/ and open build.prop (Root Browser has built in RB text editor so use it)
First find these 4 lines:

and delete them.

Let me be the first one to say that this works really well. I have tried to open alot of apps that are using quite alot of RAM, and i haven't seen anyone of them reload yet while switching between them after i did this modification to my build.prop file :good:.
So far so good.

im not yet rooted but whenever i am this looks good, can this also be incorporated into a kernel or ROM to save having to manually do this?

Works perfect ?

Changed/added these tweaks to build.prop via PC. Copied it to system/ and rebooted - completely forgot to set the right permission. Was caught in bootloop but luckily I had nandroid backup. Restored system and did it again. Will test it out and report results.
EDIT: Does anyone else receive Security Notice notifications after changing build.prop with the changes provided? It says "Unauthorized actions have been detected". When I click on it, it opens Device Security and says threat found. I can restart the device to undo any unauthorized changes. When I hit restart, it boots into recovery (PhilZ is what I have). It doesn't show any changes. When I reboot, the notification pops up after a couple of mins. How can I deal with it?

Hmm I'm almost sure it's Knox. I'd try using titanium backup to freeze /delete all Knox related apps/services.

@Krokogator it was the SecurityLogAgent giving that notification. I've frozen it with Root Uninstaller and it disappeared. Unfortunataly I can't seem to delete the preinstalled apps that were on my phone. I will try with TB in a moment.

I followed all your instructions but unfortunately it doesn't really seem to work on my end. When I open an app and go back into it, it still reloads it.
I double/triple checked I edited everything and added the lines accordingly.
Using arter kernel.

Krokogator have been using this mod from yesterday night on my edge normal G925F
It's amazing. it really works and keep the app open as i left them in background.
some little times Instagram have been reload but all the other apps opened from where i have left them.
Amazing amazing.

Didn't notice faster or slowet battery drain. I could easily achieve over 7h SOT with this so I'm sure it doesn't affect (in a bad way)

This fix did make things better but is there any way to fix the lag ?? scrolling lag, a little 2s delay here and there... I'm coming from a nexus5, a 2year old phone, and the n5 is much, much smoother than this 5400 geekbench scoring beast ! WTF?!

Yea I have the same, whatsapp emoji scrolling, google play app detail scrolling, pressing hide button in dialer (after closing it from recents), facebook tab scrolling etc is jerky , stuttery blah blah.
How on earth does samsung succeed to lag this hardware, come on sammy engineers...

I sawed on changelog they fixed bugs mentioned in bugs, but maybe its translator fail? Anyway, can someone who understand that site provide a link to latest version? I dont know how to register on that site just because of translator which is horrible

Just try to make call. For me, it works. I'm using Play LTE sim in Poland, so i think you're shouldn't have any problems. Rom works really great, for me.
BUGS:
- Sometimes, when you're trying to launch sms app, it crashes. After few attempts you'll get it.
- At the start, you will get some chinese junk apps, just uninstall it via system app remover app from playstore.
- To get Google Playstore, you need to install it manually. It's simple procedure.
- Equaliser doesn't work, takes crashes when you trying to launch it. But audio works well.
- SIM / cellular working. To get Sim icon, just tap on the icon with mobile reach ~ I'm really don't know how it name properly, forgive me. (You need to launch that app after every reboot).

I have a problem, i can't reach "device id" pass even when i will choose chinese or english language at start up.
What should i do? Also at start up i get a message error about SIM CARD (I have also Play LTE in Poland).

Just try to make call. For me, it works. I'm using Play LTE sim in Poland, so i think you're shouldn't have any problems. Rom works really great, for me.
BUGS:
- Sometimes, when you're trying to launch sms app, it crashes. After few attempts you'll get it.
- At the start, you will get some chinese junk apps, just uninstall it via system app remover app from playstore.
- To get Google Playstore, you need to install it manually. It's simple procedure.
- Equaliser doesn't work, takes crashes when you trying to launch it. But audio works well.
- SIM / cellular working. To get Sim icon, just tap on the icon with mobile reach ~ I'm really don't know how it name properly, forgive me. (You need to launch that app after every reboot).

[Moto G6 Play] Cannot download images from the internet.

Whenever I start downloading images (wallpapers from Google graphic search), it says download started, but the picture is nowhere on the phone. I'm using Lightning Browser.

The storage permissions are different in oreo. If you're downloading it with chrome and you chose SD card, you'll need to look in your SD card storage. Android-->data---> chrome--> files

I'm downloading using Lightning Browser. Maybe the reason lies in that browser?

There is no g6 play forum. It's just a list that you can't access from XDA labs app. And they just redirect here anyways.

That's your internal storage, download folder. Make sure the browser you're using has storage permissions.
And how are you trying to view pictures? Built in file explorer?

I'm checking if the picture is on the phone using gallery.
But browsing thru built in explorer didn't show download folder either.
