Hello XDA community,
So I've owned the Note II since it came out basically. I used to ODIN custom recoveries and flash ROMs to it all the time. After the last update (4.4.2), I ODIN my phone back to stock to get the update; which of course included the dreaded KNOX. Afterwards, I just left it be due to the KNOX security and fear of messing up the phone. Long story short, I've been out of the loop for a couple of years and recently I've had the urge to try some of the newer ROMs and what not. More than likely this urge has spawned from the fact that I'll be doing away with my Note II soon, as it's very old and dated. So the fear of messing it up, has some what diminished.
So my question is... Is there anything special that I have to do before attempting to load a custom recovery after the 4.4.2 firmware update? Do I have to downgrade my current stock firmware first? Or is it still the same as it was before 4.4.2, just using ODIN to push the recovery and reboot? Any help is greatly appreciated! :victory:
Even with knox there is a chainfire setup. Trips knox but your out of warranty anyway. Just follow threads for your note 2. Mine is att.

Wow, Thanks for the quick response! Would you mind looking through these instructions right quick, and see if I'm safe to go with this method?
ROOT AT&T GALAXY NOTE 2 AND INSTALL TWRP RECOVERY
1.) Download and extract CF-Auto-Root-t0lteatt-t0lteatt-samsungsghi317.zip to your PC. You’ll get an Odin flash-able file in the .tar.md5 format.
2.) Flash the CF-Auto-Root-t0lteatt-t0lteatt-samsungsghi317.tar.md5 using Odin. You can follow our exclusive guide on flashing firmware using Odin
3.) During the CF Auto-root process, if the device is stuck at bootlogo, remove the battery and boot into recovery mode manually to start the rooting process.
4.) Once the flashing process is finished, reboot the device and open the SuperSU app. If you encounter any KNOX warnings, then follow the instructions given in our KNOX disabling guide
5.) If everything is fine on the rooting end, download the latest Odin flash-able TWRP recovery from the Official TWRP page
6.) The recovery is in the form of .tar package, flash it using the Odin guide
7.) Reboot the device into recovery mode and check if the recovery is installed properly.
That looks like the right one. Been awhile my note is still going. Getting oppo r7s soon. But yes looks correct. Good flashing.

Not sure where I went wrong. I factory reset my phone before I even started. Pushed the ROOT using ODIN 3.10. Everything went fine, the phone rebooted and came back with "SuperSU stopped working" ,"Youtube stopped working", "Maps stopped working." Unable to open any of those apps. I factory reset again, and cleared the cache, but still no luck. Any suggestions for me?

Tried to re-flash SuperSU, but still no luck. However, after all the other apps finished updating - I can use youtube and maps again. yay! lol.
By re-flashing stock, do you mean using ODIN to push a stock firmware back over to the phone? Did the stock 4.4.2 firmware ever leak out after release?
By the way, I really appreciate your advice on all this.
I did a 4.3 stock. Then I flashed DN3. But yeah gapps can be a pain too. Slipped my mind lol.

No, you are just flashing the recovery and a zip file for root. Does not wipe data.

Would it be wise waiting until an OTA update comes? You would think there would be one just for misc bugs, as well as hopefully multi window support.

ota not working
So I just have twrp installed so i could use wifi tether. I just got the OTA last night for the security update. I knew it would fail after the reboot. I went into TWRP selected install, from /cache were the ota was sitting. It appeared to be working but failed at the end.
error message: assert failed getprop ro.secure =1
Is there anyway around this?
So as of right now there is now way to root with the latest OTA installed correct? I just got my Note II yesterday and the OTA came through this morning and I, without thought, accepted and installed it. Is there a way to root or need I wait until a method releases with the latest OTA?

You can root using odin or cf auto root or twrp or cwm etc. No more exonys abuse.

You can still root using any method other than the exynos abuse app. Just flash a custom recovery In odin and then flash a root.zip

No way around that. Easy way to explain, need to reset your binary counter using triangle away. Must be run as many times as you need to get it down to 1, then you must unroot using su preferably so it can cleanly do it. Then you must install the stock recovery then you can update. Hope that helps. I just did all this today, hence that's why I'm posting this late. Took me a while to figure out why it kept failing. Triangle away is a must if you want to do it without installing a rooted rom with update built in.

Hi,
I'm having issues installing CWM Recovery on my Rooted GN2. It's the Canadian variant, SGH-I317M.
It does go through the process of flashing the recovery, but never gets to saying PASS in ODIN. When I try to get into the Recovery, it still has the stock Samsung Recovery. It does, however trip the flash counter.
I'm followiing the instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1988785
This is what I get after flashing in ODIN.
Maybe a bad download? Have you checked to see if it installed? I dont usually recommend this but koush's Rom Manager supports our device now, you can use the app to flash it if your already rooted:thumbup:

I was able to install CWM by following this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=36201055&postcount=54
But I'm starting to think that it may have been my fault the whole time...
While doing the 3 button combo to try to boot into Recovery, I was using Vol-DOWN, instead of Vol-UP. So I was going into download mode. I'm going to try flashing the CWM through ODIN again and see if I was just an idiot the whole time.

I thought of cleanROM but it is pretty stock. I feel if im going to flash any rom i might as well go with something modded and tweaked rather then stock, while keeping most of the note 2 and s-pen features. If i start finding them being a little buggy or draining my battery or anything, ill settle with cleanROM and just flash some custom mods.
i flashed my CWM through MobileODIN. worked like a charm. then i ran into issues with backing up to extSD, which ended up working after i formatted it but i took way longer then onto internal SD.
i know its off topic for this thread..Any suggestions or thoughts on the JEDI X9 and SKYNOTE roms will be great guys. Im all backed up and ready to flash pretty quick here.
I guess you have custom ROM. You must root and rename recovery restore files before you boot to android or stock recovery will be restored.

If you are on 4.1.2, you can flash back to whatever you want. If you're on 4.3 Jellybean, you probably have Knox, and CAN NOT flash down to 4.1.2 via Odin, or you will brick. If you want the 4.4.2 Sprint update, it's out in Tar format, so simply flash it through Odin and root away. It's very very simple. Takes about five minutes. But it DOES trip Knox, just so you know. Good luck.

I roooted it in December. No troubles. I tried several ROMS. I learned from doing and enjoyed "messing around" with the phone. My wife has exact phone and I thought it would be nice to update to the 4.4.2 so we each had identical phones with same ROMs. I unrooted and updated to 4.4.2. I have bad hearing and liked that I could change the Volume by editing the sound file. With the phone unrooted I can't hear too well and I miss the rooted phone. I tried the CF Auto root method and no luck. My question is can I use ODIN to install an older ROM and then root from there? My understanding is that ODIN wipes all and installs what you give it to install. I appreciate all the help.

No, you are on Kitkar boot loader and can not down grade to an older rom through Odin. Rooting is very simple in kitkat. It can be done through philz recovery and play store method, or if you don't want to do any other flashing after root, you can use towelroot.

Hi, guys
For some time didn't visit the site. Now bought T-mo S4 M-919.
Last 3 days running sleep deprived LOL. Trying to install either CWM, CWM-touch, TWIRP.... ANYTHING!!!!
Used Odin 3.07, 1.85, operation completes in 2.03 minutes and yellow square on the top of Odin menu says PASS.
Then again, booting into recovery and getting recovery (3e), stock I assume.
D-loaded all drives, Kies, whatever was suggested in several posts. Read and searched for 3 days, eyes are bleeding already... LOL
Installed custom recoveries on multiple devices HD2, Asus Transformer, dreaded Viewsonic G-tab, HTC Sensation 4g...
Never had such a tough time.
What am I doing wrong? Did anyone else had such a problem?
Any advice is greatly appreciated!!!

Back up all the bloat with titanium.
Make a full nandroid backup of the rom.
Then delete anything you want. If it breaks restore it with titanium. If it really breaks do a full nandroid restore.

Hey guys,
It's been a while.. so long I forgot my actual account password and no longer have access to the email address I used to create it. I've been on iOS for the last... 4-5 years now.
Anyway, I'm finally back now, got a Galaxy Note 3, and I've rooted it, and upgraded to 4.4.2 KitKat. I've tried to install CWM, and Odin says it passed (I've done this like 6 times now, trying different fixes I've found online, and none worked). Every time I try to boot into recovery, I get the following at the top of the screen:
1. RECOVERY BOOTING
2. RECOVERY IS NOT SEANDROID ENFORCING
3. Set Warranty Bit: recovery
After this, the phone reboots, and takes me to the OS, which is different than most people, apparently it won't let them even boot so I suppose I'm lucky.
But if I didn't want a custom Rom on my Note, I wouldn't be here, someone please help.
that's weird, usually that blue 'recovery booting' means you are gonna get there.
a few things just for clarification: are you letting go of all the buttons as soon as you see that screen? and you do have the Tmo Note 3, yeah?
i hope you figure this out... it's gotta be something simple, i would think..
Did you root first using CF auto root?

Yeah, as soon as I see the screen I let go. Then it reboots into the KitKat OS I already had installed.
And yep, T-Mobile Note 3

I used this tutorial to root:
galaxynote3root.com/galaxy-note-3-root/how-to-root-galaxy-note-3/
CF AutoRoot didn't work for me at first, I have it downloaded but couldn't get root access with it.
I have Root Access on KitKat tho, and it's working fine.
What are you using to install the recovery? Odin?

Yeah, tried both Odin v1.85 and v3.09 as administrator.
have you tried TWRP? that's what i'm using, version 2.7.0.0. perhaps you have an outdated version of CWM? you can grab a TWRP Odin file here if you wanna try: http://goo.im/devs/OpenRecovery/hltetmo
just throwing out ideas here... hope you get it figured out.
Philz seems to be the recovery of choice lately. Try it out. Works flawlessly for me.

I thought TOP didn't work on KitKat? I had it initially but it threw the same error so I thought it was the problem and switched to CWM.
Also. After a while these word captchas are horrible. I keep trying to answer them and it refuses to work. I didn't remember xda having them before.
Verify that you gave it the CWM for 4.4.x, not the CWM for 4.3. If it is the wrong version just give it the correct one.

Apparently I had Philz on my computer so I gave it a shot. It gave me the same 3 messages in the beginning but it booted and I got infamous flashed on my phone.
Thanks a lot of all your help guys.

What boxes are checked marked in Odin ? PDA should be checked for installing the recovery.
