I was rooted. Loved it. Wanted latest update. Thought I could root again. Having trouble. Why cant I just use Odin and go go back to Jelly bean and then re root?
What, exactly, are you having trouble with?

If you are on 4.1.2, you can flash back to whatever you want. If you're on 4.3 Jellybean, you probably have Knox, and CAN NOT flash down to 4.1.2 via Odin, or you will brick. If you want the 4.4.2 Sprint update, it's out in Tar format, so simply flash it through Odin and root away. It's very very simple. Takes about five minutes. But it DOES trip Knox, just so you know. Good luck.

I roooted it in December. No troubles. I tried several ROMS. I learned from doing and enjoyed "messing around" with the phone. My wife has exact phone and I thought it would be nice to update to the 4.4.2 so we each had identical phones with same ROMs. I unrooted and updated to 4.4.2. I have bad hearing and liked that I could change the Volume by editing the sound file. With the phone unrooted I can't hear too well and I miss the rooted phone. I tried the CF Auto root method and no luck. My question is can I use ODIN to install an older ROM and then root from there? My understanding is that ODIN wipes all and installs what you give it to install. I appreciate all the help.

No, you are on Kitkar boot loader and can not down grade to an older rom through Odin. Rooting is very simple in kitkat. It can be done through philz recovery and play store method, or if you don't want to do any other flashing after root, you can use towelroot.

I thank you for your help and information. I downloaded the files and will try it after holiday. I'd hate to not have a phone when we go away. After rooted first thing Ill do is boost my volume. Can not hear too well from my job. I'll let you know how it goes. I am slow witted but love fooling with stuff. When I was rooted I had CM10, then tried CM11. Went back to CM10. When I unrooted I even "soft bricked" phone. I found info on how to "unbrick" I lucked out. Then took each update in an hour till I was up to 4.4.2. Then realized my error unrooting. I appreciate all the help and information form this group and individuals. I like the fact that I can learn something and maybe one day I can help someone else.
If you don't have the volume increase mod, it's here:

Thanks for the information and links. After holiday weekend I'll root again and increase my volume. I thank you and others for all your help. Hope all have a safe and healthy 4th of July!
Thanks from bottom of my heart
I got home from weekend getaway and rooted my phone again. Thanks to you. In case anyone else is reading. I used Odin 3.07 and Philz touch 6.41.6-d2lte.tar.md5. After Odin finished my S3 rebooted and no root. I then ran Odin again but unchecked auto reboot. I then went into recovery and Philz was there. Followed the reboot with root. Then updated SuperSu and it disabled Knox. I will now flash the volume increase. I am very grateful for your help, information and patience!

How common is this I would likevcto flash some roms and all that good stuff. I have been reading about people phones not working after rooting and applying a Rom. Should I be worried ? Should I wait? And if it's all good any methods that worked cleanly for other people ? Thanks in advance

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
I wouldn't say its very common as there are tons of people flashing and we dont hear about half the forum crying about corrupting their imei, thats not to say that its a non issue though. As you can probably see from the numerous threads (main one in the att development). Its advisable to wait, but with any flash you know the risk you are taking.
I was actually holding off till yesterday, ended up just saying eff it and flashed, did the non trip rooting, flashed the latest cwm from the official cwm site. Flashed Aokp, no imei wipe (was scared ****less the whole time though ) Decided i didnt even like the AOKP rom and flashed my carriers stock rom again through odin, So far so good.
However in the future im waiting for a full solution to this imei problem before i root or flash again. :good:
Id say just read the threads, if you understand the risks and want to proceed go ahead. good luck
So you went through all the steps and your fine? Thanks I may wait A week or so the stock Rom is actual nice I just like to try new stuff

i flashed my phone with the original at&t root method (which increased flash counter). since then, i've flashed the stock rom (UCALEM) to get non-modified status, reset the flash counter, and flashed the stock update rom (UCALG1) with no problems so far. i wasn't even aware of the imei issues until poking around the forums the other day. i suppose ignorance really is bliss.

i should add.. i used the stock root injected roms (after the initial flash) from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426
So ish there a chance even if we follow AT&T stuff directly? I've never heard of this happening I've had and flashed a lot of phones and never heard of such a thing should we worry or what I wanna flash but don't won't a brick

i think there's always the chance... but you can reduce that chance significantly if you read up and follow the directions.
My friends has a gs3 he purchased on release day and rooted it. The past week he accepted two ota's which broke his root. So I'm trying to root it for him but here's where the confusion kicks in. On sprints website it actually show these updates are old and not new and there's two more recent ones he never got pushed to him. Right now the phone is on LG2 and won't update any further. What do I need to do to be up to date with root. Should I just look for a way to root this build or try updating it. By the way I haven't seen any root methods for this build which is why I'm asking. Thanks in advance to anyone who responds

The method he used to root it in the first place should work again. Try that.
Then once it's rooted again go to this thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1904099
Download the file "LI3 STOCK WITH AUTO COUNTER RESET" in the first post and flash the file in recovery. That will put the phone to 100%stock, unrooted, on the latest build.
From that point, if he wants to, he can reroot the phone and install the latest TWRP recovery. After that, tell him not to accept any OTA updates. Come back here to the development forum and someone will have the update in flashable form so that root isn't lost.

Yup thats the most easy way of doing it. you say ur not rooted but do you have custom recovery? If so then re rooting before the flash wouldn't be necessary.
It will not wipe data however its recommended that you do. granted it will probably work just fine if it being installed over top of a stock Rom. Then to keep root/recovery just follow the instructions in the post

I'm not sure if he has a custom recovery but I'm assuming if he was able to accept ota's and install them fine he must have stock recovery. I'll have to check and see a lil later as he's at work now.

Sprints update system sucks......As for odin, you select the file you want to flash and click start......pretty stupid proof if you ask me. There is a .tar for the most recent update and the jellybean leak available in the development section.

Yes it is stupid proof but it also makes you have to take an extra step to reset the count. On my phone I just deal with the Odin OC which don't mess with your counts and come rooted then mobile Odin for the rest. Never have to worry about a flash count. You can root without any problems using the Note2 Toolkit by going to the root/unroot section and selecting OPTION 4. This will flash the cwm recovery which is known to work and let you install the root zip file (make sure to install the drivers and test them first though).
I know have a stock kernel from the tmobile variant, have rooted it and adding full support to the toolit now. Should be up and running today some time.
Mark.

Hey guys,
I botched my phone enough that I had no choice but to ODIN back to stock. I have been searching the web and only found that idiotic posting about using ODIN and CF-Autoroot, which doesn't work lol.
Is there an ODIN of stock rooted out there yet? Or can someone pull one and forward it to me?
I have a locked BL btw, or I would already have done a zipped rom.
Second question, if anyone has a working APK of Tunee, cna they zip it email it to me? That's majorly what I am looking for since it's in my TB lol!

God I wish. There are stock images out there but you have to be on an older stock that 4.4.2 already. So i'm in the same boat. Praying a .tar file comes out somewhere and i can get my root back. It's killing me.

That pains me to hear. I'm still trying to remain hopeful some God amongst men can exploit our kernel and give me root at stock 4.4.2.
No upgrade for a while. It's ironic the Note 3's on Verizon can use the towelroot exploit and we can't. :crying:

sadface... :crying: :crying: :crying: :crying:
Hello XDA community,
So I've owned the Note II since it came out basically. I used to ODIN custom recoveries and flash ROMs to it all the time. After the last update (4.4.2), I ODIN my phone back to stock to get the update; which of course included the dreaded KNOX. Afterwards, I just left it be due to the KNOX security and fear of messing up the phone. Long story short, I've been out of the loop for a couple of years and recently I've had the urge to try some of the newer ROMs and what not. More than likely this urge has spawned from the fact that I'll be doing away with my Note II soon, as it's very old and dated. So the fear of messing it up, has some what diminished.
So my question is... Is there anything special that I have to do before attempting to load a custom recovery after the 4.4.2 firmware update? Do I have to downgrade my current stock firmware first? Or is it still the same as it was before 4.4.2, just using ODIN to push the recovery and reboot? Any help is greatly appreciated! :victory:

Wow, Thanks for the quick response! Would you mind looking through these instructions right quick, and see if I'm safe to go with this method?
ROOT AT&T GALAXY NOTE 2 AND INSTALL TWRP RECOVERY
1.) Download and extract CF-Auto-Root-t0lteatt-t0lteatt-samsungsghi317.zip to your PC. You’ll get an Odin flash-able file in the .tar.md5 format.
2.) Flash the CF-Auto-Root-t0lteatt-t0lteatt-samsungsghi317.tar.md5 using Odin. You can follow our exclusive guide on flashing firmware using Odin
3.) During the CF Auto-root process, if the device is stuck at bootlogo, remove the battery and boot into recovery mode manually to start the rooting process.
4.) Once the flashing process is finished, reboot the device and open the SuperSU app. If you encounter any KNOX warnings, then follow the instructions given in our KNOX disabling guide
5.) If everything is fine on the rooting end, download the latest Odin flash-able TWRP recovery from the Official TWRP page
6.) The recovery is in the form of .tar package, flash it using the Odin guide
7.) Reboot the device into recovery mode and check if the recovery is installed properly.

By re-flashing stock, do you mean using ODIN to push a stock firmware back over to the phone? Did the stock 4.4.2 firmware ever leak out after release?
By the way, I really appreciate your advice on all this.

I ended up going about it a different way, but I don't think I would of tried it without you talking me through some of it. Although it's not a lot, I donated to you so you could at least have a beer on me. Thanks brother. KCCO.
Greatly appreciated & good luck with everything. We are all here to help each other.
