Hi, I've recently entered the world of modding, and as such, need to back up my phone. I am currently running a Samsung Galaxy S III with only 3 gb of internal memory left, and I'm using Cyanogenmod 12.1. I want to backup my phone to my 64 gb external SD card, but my custom recovery (TWRP) can't find it. Do you guys have any suggestions as to how I can backup to my external SD card? Thanks!
P.S. Does anyone know how to move TWRP to my external SD card? It takes up 4 gb of space on my measly 16 gb of internal storage. Thanks in advance!

any file manager with root access should allow you to move your twrp backups to extSD. es file explorer is my go to , but there are many out there.

Does the phone have the latest version of TWRP installed? Is the card formatted as fat32?
Yes, make sure you're on the most recent TWRP, 2.8.7. At least one of the other 2.8 series of TWRP releases had some issues with external SD cards on my phone.

Considering ib haven't modified the external SD yet, I think it's still exfat. Do I need to modify it to FAT32?

Yes, I'm running 2.8.7.
Sorry, I don't have any cards larger than 32 GB and they are all formatted as fat32. TWRP reads and writes to them with no problem.

There is a spot you can touch towards the bottom of the screen, it's right above the compression and md5sum check boxes. It lets you pick between internal and external storage.

I have looked over and over. And I see articles mentioning how to backup your device before Flashing ROMs. They even show how to do it. One of the articles said it could be done and how to do it. I did it and just like the other ways I tried the backup is stored on the Internal Storage.
I have all this room on my SD card available. My internal storage is almost completely filled with me not being able to store games or any apps for that matter on my SD card. Right now I have about 4GB left for my Internal Storage. After the backup I had 1GB left (I deleted the backup on the Internal Storage).
Is everyone else just storing the backup(s) on your Internal Storage? Your computer? SD Card?

Well you can backup to the internal sd card a d once you made a nandroid you can move the folder "clockworkmod" to your external sd card. And once you need to backup just move it back like a storage kind of thing. Tbh I'm not sure if you can make a backup to your external but I would always save it on your computer if anything happened to your phone

Thanks. I think I am going to go ahead and do it the way you said. Have a good one.
I do it this way but would prefer to backup directly to the sd card.
TWRP can do nandroids on the external sd.

I had to look up what TWRP was. LOL
Anyway, I looked it over, decided to try it and it worked! I now have my device backed up on the SD card instead of my internal memory.
I want to thank you and the other person for the helpful info. Each of you helped point me in the direction I wanted to go. Have a good one.
My cwm automatically backs up to external sd card. I'm pretty sure most versions do this now but can't verify. Also when I flash zips it will look in external unless I choose install zip from internal sd card

Doesnt work with the newest version of cwm. It worked with the 5.5.0.4 one though.

Is your SD card formatted as exFAT ? If so, the kernel I'm using for TWRP doesn't support it, since it's a closed source module
Sorry about that. My suggestion would be to get a separate SD card for backups/restores for now.
Thanks!

Hi everyone!
Today I upgraded from CM 12.1. something to CM 13 and got a kinda weird bug, where google play services kept crashing, so i reflashed the gapps, and got another bug where the starting presentation program (don't remeber the exact name of the program, "guided assistance" or something, the one you get at the beggining explaining how to set up your device) kept crashing, making it impossible for me to continue using the device. Decided to restore factory settings (clicking between a crash and another xD) and everything works fine, except the fact that I can't use my sd card any suggestions? Any other info needed?
Is there a marshmallow rom with a working sd card?
P.s. I just read that is a issue that the developers are aware of, but i can't find anyone complaining about this error (the sd card not working) in the xda CM13 thread
Thanks to all!
MicroSD card support in CM13 ROMs is borked - the only thing you can do is wait it out!

Im on the latest CM nightly and I have no issue with my 64GB sd card. I used the built in format option and I seem to be fine

Does the current CM nightly that you're using support exFAT out of the box? The reason for me asking this is because on the 20151207 nightly, it was still complaining that the 'SD card is corrupted'.
FAT32 support for SD cards is fine on portable storage mode but when formatted as 'internal', people are still reporting problems as well.
I got that message as well but when I formatted I got my full sd card

If that is the case, then what file system is your microSD card using currently?
From what I can tell exFAT. My transfer speed was much faster then when I had to use FAT32. Is there an app that can tell me what format my SD card is?

Soorry if this is a stupid question, but what is the built-in format? Can I use an SDXC card from another Android device (Samsung Tab S) or this a special format option found only in CM-13/Marshmallow devices?

When you put a SD card in the phone on 6.0 it will ask if you want to format it. With 6.0 you can use it as portable storage or internal memory for more room for apps and such. I use portable storage but as of the last nightly I didnt have to format my SD card. CM fixed exFAT support in their latest builds.

Hey can you tell me your SD model? And filesystem? Just plug in your pc and see in the properties settings. Can you tell me your CM build?
Little update, I flashed Cloudy 2.5 and Gabriel kernel, thanks all
I figured out the SD card problem , i couldn't fix it for nothing until i did this.
FOR ANYBODY THAT GETS STUCK AT 20% or any other sd card problem with 6.0 roms
1. Backup all files on SD card (This will delete everything on your sdcard)
2. Install minitool partition wizard on your computer
3. Inset Sd card into PC with and adapter and/or card reader (NOT WITH PHONE)
4. Remove all partitions from SD card with partition wizard (Do not reformat) Be careful to only select the SD card
5. Place SD card into phone
6. Let the phone detect SD card and try to reformat
7. chose either Internal or Portable Storage
8. Enjoy because it works perfectly for me now.
btw. im running a LG G3 D850 ATT
there was a fstab issue with external sdcards, the fix has been merge already though.

If the file is stored on the external SD Card, it can't be found by twrp because sdcards couldn't mount on the z play.
No all is on my internal storage but i have external sdcard like internal storage or shared storage
Make sure you're not using the Chinese version that was released.

If you are using as shared storage your phone will have defaulted the file to the SD card in shared storage most goes to the SD card I had the same problem after getting SD back to swappable all is good

Yes, I think it is an security mechanism, by the same but that's not really a problem or? You can also app move to the internal storage but you can't see them.
