Third party themes for stock unrooted LG G4? - G4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

are there such things? I've been doing some searching for a few hours now with no results it seems. I was wondering if anyone here knows of any sites that makes custom LG G4 themes that i can download and install through the LG home themes setting that actually changes the UI's theme? I don't like LG's stock home screen i prefer smarter home screens like Aviate (before yahoo went and screwed it up) or Bento(Scout for those who don't recognize the original name Bento lol) I'd like to know if it's even POSSIBLE to create custom themes for the LG G4 with out requiring Root or a custom rom because the LAST time i tried to root my device it got perma bricked and i had to have it replaced through Sprint claiming it was a software issue and didn't get charged a dime in turn.
Unless the LG G4 has some awesome roms like MIUI or other similar roms with a ton of customization to make it my own, along with said roms giving massive improvements to battery life and performance i'd rather not take the chance of screwing up my replacement device as there doesn't seem to be any quick root method that doesn't require a computer to do it with ODIN and the like. (i miss the old days of simply putting the update zip on your SD card and simply flashing it through stock recovery)
SOOO any thoughts? any suggestions? ANYTHING? ;w;

HTC 3x3 People Widget

Hi
I have just been playing trying to find out if it's possible to replace certain elements of the Android OS with ones from other providers to improve certain aspects.
My main reason for doing this is that my Hero (latest Orange UK 1.5 ROM) has the HTC People Widget which only has the 1x3 option. I'm led to believe that the T-Mobile G2 has a version of the widget that offers other settings (i.e. 3x3).
So the main question is, is it possible to rip the APK from one phone and install it on another?
What I've tried so far leads me to believe the answer is "no".
I've been provided with the apk from a T-Mobile G2
I have a rooted Hero so have booted to the recovery console, deleted the version from my phone (htccontactwidgets.apk and htccontactwidgets.odex) and replaced it with the apk file provided (renamed to htccontactwidgets.apk) then rebooted. Got nothing on this attempt.
My second attempt I used the new apk with the old odex file, this time the widget returned but was still the 1x3 version from my ROM.
Has anybody successfully replaced the 1x3 widget with the improved one from the G2 ROM?

I don't really want to flash the whole phone, I'm happy with it now, i'd just like the enhanced People widget.
I'm guessing it will be standard in the official 2.x ROM.
Your missing out then
modaco 3.1 is exactly the same as the stock HTC rom only about 10x faster. I don't even find it lagging on the keyboard even on the phone keypad. You will have a much more pleasurable experience on modaco 3.1 plus you will have the 3x3 people widget

it has already been released in the official 2.73 hero rom.

u can install the latest one
yea just get a new generic rom, and install it.
Oh ok, so there is a newer "generic" ROM than the one on my Orange-branded hero? Cool, will check that out.
yea, i had the orange branded as well, and i put the newer generic one, it has the 3x3 widget
I've just taken the plunge and installed v3.1 of MCR, glad I did
See i told you that you'd be impressed!

hehehe. welcome to the flashing addiction!!!!
I have been on the XDA and Modaco scene for a very long time as a viewer and have partaken in flashing custom ROMs several times before but I always have the feeling at the bottom of my gut that if things go wrong I'll be devastated. The Hero is quite simply the best phone I've ever owned (I said my N95 as good and was reluctant to upgrade from that until I found the Hero) which is why I didn't want to knacker it up, but the benefits far outweigh the risks as far as Paul's ROMs are concerned.
I've read with interest people saying that the MCR 3.1 ROM is draining their battery, and I too thought this but then noticed in the "Spare Parts" app that an app I'd installed (ShootMe) was taking up a lot of processor time sat in the background, so the next charge should prove it's normally 3rd party apps that drink battery power
On a final note, just have to say I absolutely love the Dropbear SSH server, makes it so much easier to tinker with the phone being able to SSH from a desktop.
I cant say I have had problems with the battery. If anything I'm finding mine is lasting a lot longer than it used to. Charged my hero 3 days ago and its still green now. This is with using wi-fi every now and again. Auto updating rss, e-mails etc and I text a lot. Now this I find unbelievable but its true I have the stock HTC battery too. On the stock HTC F/W I was re-charging every night.

3 days??????with data connection 24/24??? how do you manage that? i only manage 18 hours with mine. of course with data connection always on, calls, im's, mails
The data connection isn't always on. Wifi is on most of the time, but that gets turned off automatically for a while. But y/day 3G was on all day and it still didn't drain much battery.

[Q] Sluggish post-lollipop?

Has anyone noticed their G3 become particularly sluggish after the lollipop update? I've only just got mine so can't really compare before and after, but friends with the same device don't remember it being slow before the update.
With lollipop installed I'm seeing lots of lag bringing up the keyboard and switching between apps.
Curious to see whether this is something people think will be sorted in future updates, or whether the device has always been a bit sluggish.
Cheers!
If you updated to L OTA then you should do a backup using either the phones built in backup tool or LG PC suite, and use the LG flash tool 2014 and the right KDZ for your phone and do a full reflash to clear everything out. OTA updates to whole new versions are known to cause lag and problems, it'd always recommended to do a full flash again when going to a whole new software Level. I might also add, people have said that the LG keyboard and stock launcher causes a lot of lag, you could try using a third party keyboard like SwiftKey or TouchPal and a third party launcher like Nova Launcher and see if that helps.

[Q] Vk810 navbar issue

Hello all. So I just picked up the vk810 a few days ago. Already rooted it, installed xposed and few other root apps, but one issue still remains. I HATE LG's navbar. Why in the world would they put send button instead of the recent apps button?!
Anywho, I installed both g2 xposed and g2 tweak box, both of which apparently work on this device but I still can't change the navbar. I seen that someone else was able to get it to change, so idk what I'm doing wrong. Any help would be great. Someone suggested ultimate dynamic navbar, but it has some annoying issues.
On a side note, I've been scouring the forums, is there any update on 100% working stock android rom for the vk810? Or even any room that's 100%working really...
Thanks!
UDN Pro "Ultimate Dynamic Navigation". I paid for it, it's worth it.
Do you have the G Pad too running LGs interface? I heard some issues with it blocking things and issues with two navbars. Any of those issues with yours?
EDIT: installed UDN pro. It does block full screen things unless you hide it, which makes it a bit of pain to use, but it's still better than stock. Guess I'll stick with this until something better comes along. Crossing my fingers for an AOSP rom soon. Seen something about it back in Nov but haven't seen any updates on anything. Big bummer for us vk810 owners...

Stock rom or lollipop rom?

Right now I'm running cloudy's rom (4.4.2). I have xposed and a few tweaks going on. I'm just a little bored and after playing with my husbands nexus 6 i really like lollipop. Do any of the lollipop roms have major issues? I really like the g3 apps like qslide and quick memo but i might sacrifice those for lollipop lol. What are your views about stock vs lollipop.

t mobile is in testing stage of lollipop for the g3. I suggest to wait a little longer.
Honestly it depends on what you want out of it. I put it on and I got crazy download speaks compared to KK. The downside is the IR blaster, knock code, and quick circle no longer work, and in my experience unless there's a kernel leak or some dev really tries to get it to work, you just have to learn to live without some of those OEM hardware features.
Other than those three things (and the rest of the phone's bloat, although the stock launcher was pretty) I've had no major issues with 5.0.2 (tried both Illusion and AOSPAL.)
My advice is install TWRP if you haven't already and back up the phone. Copy that backup somewhere safe so you always have it just in case you format the wrong thing or delete it on accident. Then flash and try whatever you want, if you hate it download something else and flash that. If you hate that too just restore that backup and all is well. Although I'd do it late at night when you're not expecting any calls.

As far as I can tell, anything CM12 based will support themes, because CM12 supports themes.
Other than that I can't tell you what to try. I'm pretty sure that the G3 will get stock L eventually unless T-Mo just forgets about it in favor of newer phones. You might like that better than CM12 for the features that would then work. Personally I don't run GAPPS and avoid anything proprietary if possible. What I want out of a ROM might not be the same as what you want.
What I'm saying is do your homework on the ROMs, read the threads in the dev section (and on other sites) and see which ROM works for you with all the features you want. That's why I said try multiple ROMs.
I'm using Illusion because I like (mostly) black UI elements because I like to use my phone at night and a black background is easier on the eyes. Other than that I have no good reason for picking that over any other LP ROM.
Anyway, good luck.

Really confused about this phone

I just got this phone today (I live in Thailand if that matters). I have the 64GB version. I have had Sony, Samsung, Motorola phones in the past and that is what I am used to. So first thing:
How do I change the home launcher? I don't see any setting for it in the settings menu. I can open up Themer (which I downloaded) and it will open up but as soon as I go to any other app, it will go back to the original homescreen.
Why is there no app drawer?
Why is the phone asking me to accept terms (which says **** like honor the Chinese constitution) and connect to the internet just to view photos in my album? I can't think of any reason that a photo album would need to connect to the internet unless it's going to upload my photos somewhere which I obviously don't want. So I seemingly cannot even view photos on this phone unless I can download something else to take care of it.
I looked at the rooting section for this phone and it seems that all of them currently have issues. Is there no way to just get plain ole vanilla android on this phone? I have never rooted a phone before and the thought is a bit scary to me because it seems like most of the instructions are written for people who already know how to do that type of thing. I went to the Cyanogenmod website and they didn't have one for this phone. Are there no alternatives? I will gladly pay for something like this. I don't want all this Mi stuff on my phone.
Sorry if I sound... whatever, I am just a bit flustered with all of this. The hardware seems nice but the software is utter ****. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Where did you purchase this Phone? From Chinese website? Does it have Google Playstore? If yes then
1) If you just want to change the Home Launcher then install your desired Launcher from Playstore and goto settings-> Installed Apps-> Defaults and set the Downloaded Launcher from there.
2) The Default Launcher on the phone is MIUI Launcher which doesn't have app drawer like iPhone and some other chinese UI.
3) There is unofficial CyanogenMod and some other custom ROMs but there are some problems with each of them like Video recording not working, if working then Audio not being recorded in them. 3G network issues and so on. The process of flashing a custom rom or rooting is little bit tedious and I'd not suggest you in this stage.
Better is to download a desired launcher from Playstore (if you have it) else sideloading and hiding the apps which you don't want to see.
Also note on official Miui ROM you're able to uninstall a bunch of stock apps too.
I'd recommend read up to unlock boot loader. It's a minor project getting this device where you want it, but the awesome battery life and screen size makes your effort worth the time.
Pls also visit official Miui forums there's a wealth of info there. ? ?

OMG, thank you so much for the home launcher tip. That solved the biggest issue I had. My Xperia Z2 had a home launcher setting in the main settings menu. I never would have guessed to look there. Thank you so much. I switched all the default apps to what I wanted and this is already a million times better. And yes, I bought it from a reputable retailer here in Bangkok so I think it's legit. Had Play store on it and everything.

Thanks, I will look into it. Cheers.
I've had the same feeling since my first Mi phone, the Redmi Note 3G. They make some really great & quality hardware capable of very good performances & end up great value for money if you know your way around. But like you felt MIUI is complete horse arse' output these days. It used to be great around version 4 or even upto 5 but then its been downhill since. My suggestion is unlock, install twrp, then you have 2 options
If you
1. want VoLTE then install sMIUI 8.0.1.0 from xiaomi.eu
2. can get by without VoLTE(either not using it at all or by using it through a MiFi modem which some carriers provide in many places/countries now) then install RR5.7.3(thanks to people like @ajsmsg78) which I found to be the most stable with the least issues so far for everyday use. Please thank the devs.
Not that the other like CM13, Mokee, etc are bad but there are issues here & there which prevent me from using it as a daily driver. I'd suggest you take a nandroid backup of all these when you try them each.
If you need more help, drop me a PM. I can help anytime with an hours notice AFAIK.
CAUTION: Read the unlocking & custom ROM/recovery guides 10-20 times so that you've almost memorised every detail if you are a newbie otherwise, especially for phones which have a non-removable battery, you'll end up regretting something later & end up kicking yourself. DO NOT SKIMP ON READING IT AGAIN & AGAIN OR SKIP STEPS else YOU"LL PAY FOR IT LATER.
To unlock the bootloader, you must ask permission from xiaomi. This takes a few days to process. You can read how to do this on en.miui.com forum. Once you have unlocked the bootloader, things will be much easier.
If the "reputable" dealer in Bangkok is Lazada, then you have probably got a patched ROM from China. You can check this by version number.

chill bro here is the link : en(dot)miui.com/thread-327459-1-(dot)html
replace (dot) with the symbol(.)
a word of advice stemming frm my experience, when u enter the phone number in application be sure to enter the same number which ur going to use in the device, and even after recieving the approval sms u might have to give it a few tries before it actually unlocks,(i had to wait 3 days for the approval sms, after recieving the sms tried for 3 days until it actually unlocked, ur mileage may vary)all the best, hope u get unlocked soon
I Googled "xiaomi mi max Unlock bootloader" and got this within 10 seconds :-
http://en.miui.com/thread-202290-1-1.html
Take care that you are logged into xiaomi account and the phone number as mentioned above, if you use phone number as your user name.
That's the only possible error. My permission from xiaomi took only 4 days. Once you unlock the bootloader, things are very easy. Remember to unpack all the zip files!
It took me 2 weeks to get an unlock code the Redmi Note 3 which uses similar internals to the Mi Max. Once I got unlock permission, I had no problems unlocking the phone using the MiFlash Unlock program in Windows. I've unlocked it a few times when I was switching back and forth between MIUI and CM.
And you're right, MIUI is a donkey's behind when it comes to slowing the phone down and doing weird things in the background. I'd recommend rooting the phone, running OS Monitor to check outbound traffic and installing Afwall to stop MIUI from phoning home. I replaced most of the stock system apps with open source equivalents and I allowed Internet access for only a few apps. Bad enough that Google slurps your data, it's even worse to have eyes in China tracking your every online move too.
