LG G4 hardware limiting the earphones volume! - G4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I tried many sound mods like V4A, Dolby Atmos, Xtrememusic....but none increase really the 3.5mm output volume.
You can get more loudness thanks to V4A+Dolby but still you feel there are 20 even 30% missing volume.
Usually with V4A I boost the db in the end from 0 (normal) to +6db and playback gain control to the max on an HTC it used to boost the volume about +30% which was enormous (never used in real life only for testing), but on the G4 and whatever the kernel I used, these +30% are only there at low to mid volume steps (G4's stock volume steps), once you are at step 7 over 10 it will have the exact same volume as 10 over 10, meaning no gain at all. It will just use the max stock volume on lower volume steps :crying:
It looks like the G4's hardware or snapdragon is limiting the max 3.5mm volume.
I tested with my Sony SBH50 BT and HTC CAR Stereoclip BT modules and the volume gain is about 20% over the max volume (meaning 120%) so V4A and other mods can bypass the max volume on a connected BT from the G4 but not the G4's own 3.5mm output
Do you know any ways to bypass this limitation?
I tried Jetaudio and other apps using Gain option but the sound is bad once +1db over normal

Yep this horror .Bad point for g4.
On G3 exixst one good app but not working on G4 https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.laransoft.volumeG3
Only tiny solution:Flash faux sound supported kernel and install faux app. This app help raise vol minimal.
Sorry for my bad english.

In just tried the Fauxsound as my kernel is Superex, and yes it's better than V4A, at least we clearly gain volume with it, I set it at +2 or +3db because more than that the sound quality is deteriorating.
I even disabled V4A as it was doing some parasites once Fauxsound is boosted.
So I think I can say no for a Fiio E6, I wanted this small boost for the incoming ski days

Yes .No perfect solution yet.I think software restriction.Need professional dev. help!

Wow I found my old good Cowon J3, the volume is way louder than G4, it will be my sports music device instead of G4, the only thing is that BT is only 2.0 so I will only used with wired earphones, and if someone calls me on the G4 I won't know

Placebo....

I really don't understand all your doubts about VA4 and volume sound...
I've installed in several phones and with a good profile effect, the sound is fantastic and I only can listen to music with the volume at 25/30%.
If kernel support audio you also increase sound loundeness wit faux app or simple kernel teak tool like kernel adiutor, sypnase or trickster.

Only Faux app is working with actual G4 kernels.
I tried the new Beats port http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software/mod-htc-beats-audio-beats-xperience-t3281603 and it's pretty good, at last it gives some warmth to the bass

I am on genysis 3.5 with the superxe kernel and v4a definitely works. I would suggest looking at the driver status in v4a and verify that it is set up properly.
If you try v4a again, you might be interested in the convolver Dolby pro logic 2 IRS profile. I think that would give you the volume boost you are looking for.

False.
Following the exact tutorial I posted there is a *very* real difference in max volume when editing the mixer paths. I've repeated it many times on my 5.1 H812 from stock.
The unfortunate problem is the distortion that comes with upping it too much, so the gain is noticeable but you're not able to boost it too high. It's very limited by the hardware. My S3 still sounds a lot better, and it goes louder... bah.

(I found this thread because I was looking for anyone else who may be experimenting, as I'm really not satisfied with the audio output.)

Boy, I sure wish this were an option for the H811 variant. I can't find any kernel that supports fauxsound. This low gain output kills me. I used to have a V10 with the same chipset and that thing would go incredibly loud. This is so disappointing.

I don't think you know exactly what an equalizer is or what it does. An equalizer adjusts the intensities of specific frequency bands independently. For example, it lets you increase the intensity of bass frequencies and lower the treble frequencies if you wish.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equalization
Equalizers are NOT volume knobs.

no one has any ideas to make it louder? i need help please lol
The speaker already gets fuzzy at max volume. It's pointless to try and use software to force it to get louder, it's not a high quality speaker.
I'd be more inclined to take it apart, and replace the speaker with a higher quality one, but that's only if you're really willing to put some effort into things.

where can i get a louder and better speaker that will fit?
I have no idea how loud you want your G2 speakers especially when the speakers are not the best ever. However I believe if you are running a sense rom and you flash the Unity Kernel (In my signature) it supports a 20% audio boost you may try that. They are also currently looking for another way to boost audio so maybe in awhile the audio boost will be greater.

It depends on whether the said equalizer (such as DSP) is actually boosting the frequencies above their "normal" levels, or just allows you to "cut" the various frequencies below their present level.
For anyone on Gingerbread, the app Volume+ allows you to boost actual volume, in addition to an equalizer, and with different profiles for headset, speaker and Bluetooth. The volume increase is not huge, but its definitely helpful. Its a paid app on the Market, but free on the dev's website:

Htc one m8 beat audio or speaker boost?

Hi, i wanted to volume up my m8's speakers, i have Viper rom, and V4A installed, but i noticed that Htc One m7 is better on speakers than M8, because of IntenseBLAST mod provided to m7, is there a way to volume up my speakers? There must be a way, this intense blast mod doesnt work for m8 cuz M8 doesnt have Beats audio, can someone help here?

There is a mixer file you can mess with manually to boost the volume, but it will create noise/distortion so its not worth it.
What mixer? Can U help me a little with it?
So it seems that M7 is louder on speakers than M8? Now im sad I like this phone (M8), the sound on headphones is great, on speakers too, but a little louder would be enough for me, maybe i could volume up the speakers without the distortion, just a little, would U help?
Thanks for fast reply.
Could someone guide me to edit some files responsible for speaker volume and how to edit them? I want to try so much to look how the efects would be.
Thanks so much for Your help.

Turn on Playback Gain Control in V4A and set the effect strength to how loud you want it (Slight, Moderate, or Extreme)
more loud speakers?
i have noticed that, sense roms are not to loud, you can try to install a pure android rom like cyanogenmod, liquidsmooth, carbon rom.
you will notice that the speakers will sound very loud my friend..
honestly i love sense and would like to see a sound mod to gain the perfect loudness on my M8

This only work on headphones, not on speaker, Ofc if U have set minimal loudness 1/15 in your UI and apply the gain in V4A then u will notice volume boost even on speaker, but if ur on Max in UI 15/15 then the volume wont boost. See for yourself i have checked it all already.
Cheers.

Hey, you have to go into the init.d tweaks and in several areas, change a few settings from false to true, and so on. If V4A is installed, it will contradict the pre-installed "Soundboost" software and cause distortion. I think the tweak is to turn LPA decode off., or to false. I'm in the middle of firmware updates otherwise I would post a screenshot or more particular answer. I will update the specifics soon for you.
I'd be grateful for your screenshots.
Thanks a million.

Heya man.
Have a quick look here: http://androidhackz.blogspot.com/2013/12/get-amazing-sound-quality-with.html. It goes in more depth about what I was mentioning actually. Recently when I install the V4A 2.3.3.0.zip and it ask which quality audio drive I want, another window pops up informing me that the Viper4Android app itself can handle the disabling you would need. Perhaps an older version doesn't though. Hope this helps? :good:

Mi Max Sound Problems

How are people dealing with the audio problems on the Mi Max? It is affecting the Global MIUI 7&8 and the China MIUI 8 ROM. Xiaomi has done nothing despite many complaining on the MIUI forums for months. Even the latest ROM has the same problems.
The output through the headphone jack is half the volume it should be. You can easily listen to YouTube at full volume and it's not even loud. Also the sound quality is appalling with quiet vocals and heavy bass even without using the system EQ (which crashes anyway in MIUI 7). There is also a noticeable hissing/static though headphones for a few seconds before and after a system sound plays, but listening to music doesn't have the same problem.
Considering its a standard Qualcomm DAC used in many phones its terrible what Xiaomi has done to mess up the output. My Mediatek powered phone from 2012 sounds so superior and with the Mi Max being a media consumption aimed phone it's a real poor effort.
I believe the phone is taking a low internal DAC output (caused by a bug) and amplifying it hence the distorted sound and low max volume. It's the only thing I'm extremely disappointed with and wondered how others are handling the issue?
By ditching MIUI...!?
Does the Mi Max not have these issues running CM etc?
I'm sure many are currently using MIUI and I won't be ditching it at least until the years warranty is up, also want to see what MIUI 9 is like based on Nougat.

I can confirm the low headphone volume bug exists for some media/music player apps on the miui 8 global rom. However, there's an easy workaround. Open Google play music app and play an audio file in that app. Increase the headphone volume from that app beyond the 'Warning: high volume can damage hearing' volume level. Leave the headphone volume at the highest setting. Close Google play music app. The next time you play audio in your preferred media player (other than Google play music), it should already be fixed. If you don't have Google play music, you can download it from Google Play store.

That wasn't necessary... I am well aware of all things about Mi Max from day one.
And you were asking about CM so...
I thought my new earphones were faulty when I used them in my Mi Max. I was going to give them away but then I read about sound problems on Mi Max. Both my xiaomi phones have poor sound quality, mi4 always had poor quiet sound.
The low volume has been fixed for me on g8
There's some cracking but that's sorted by clean cache in the play music app there's also a equaliser in the app settings
This is a workaround for get high volume during listening to music by using IEM/Headphone. Only work with poweramp v3 alpha build 703/704
(Please Google it for APK. It's free in Poweramp forum)
Install poweramp v3 alpha, go to setting > resampler.
Select resampler type > SoX
Resampler cutoff frequency ratio > 97% ~ 99%
Dither > Improved e-weighted noise shaping (Poweramp indicate it slow but actually it fast enough)
Tap back button and select Hi-Res Output and then turn on Wired headset/aux (it will upsampled lossy format thus higher volume and audio quality improved a little bit. Another thing is make sure the 24-bit Snapdragon DAC is activated during listening session).
WARNING: Lower the volume at 20% or lower before activating Hi-Res output during playback. Trust me you'll thanks me later xD
If you can hear distorted sound at high volume, go to replay gain (RG), set preamp for songs without RG info to -7dB. (Just to make sure the sound is not clipping).
The Mi Max audio quality is pretty good even the DAC is just an integrated DAC.
In the screenshot is DSD128 playback. Working but it was downsampled. As for 24bit/96kHz source, it will upsampled to 192kHz.
Thank you for the replies. I have tried upping to volume in Google Play Music and it did increase the volume in other apps by around 20% so it's a start and thank you for the tip but it's still not really near the quality and loudness it should be for a stock Qualcomm 652 DAC. I will give the V3 Poweramp beta trick a try. I am currently using the Poweramp Pro to listen to music and the Mi Max sounds poor.
Basically Xiaomi need to go through how MIUI is handling audio and overhaul it imo, and hopefully version 9 won't need any of these work arounds because I've never had trouble on other budget phones... or I'm off to another ROM!

If you want more loudness still, louder than what the stock MIUI 8 can give you, I suggest you install music players with a 'pre-amp'. Neutron is one of my favorites among 'audiophile' grade music players (though I like BSPlayer more due to its multimedia capabilities). You can download the trial version of 'Neutron' at Google playstore (or purchase the full version if you are satisfied with the player.) Here are screenshots of Neutron music player where the pre-amp was adjusted (above zero) so as to increase the Mi Max's maximum attainable headphone volume (without buying an external portable headphone amp). Please note that too high a pre-amp setting can cause audio clipping which results to bad sound quality.
As to sound quality, yes the Mi Max headphone sound quality is really poor out of the box (MIUI 8). I have an Audio technica ATH-M50s/LE headphones which I used to listen to FLAC music on my previous Huawei Mate 7 phone. The sound quality was just ethereal. It's like listening to live musicians. I missed the headphone sound quality on my Mate 7 [DTS enabled] using the Audio technica as my headphones and BSPlayer as my preferred player (highlights the Audio Technica's strengths). Anyway, when I changed to the Mi Max, I used the same Audio Technica headphones only to be disappointed. I found out the Mi Max can't quite match the Mate 7's music reproduction [headphone DTS enabled] using the same music player (BSPlayer) or any music player for that matter. Fortunately, the Mi Max comes with headphone settings and a built in equalizer. Did a little experimentation and came up with the following settings that managed to somehow 'resemble' what my previous Mate 7 phone was able to deliver with regard to sound quality. Please note your mileage may vary depending on the quality of the headphones you use and your preferred media or music player:
1. Set Mi sound enhancer to 'ON'. Choose 'Mi headphones'.
2. Set the equalizer as follows:
These settings should improve the Mi Max's sound quality tremendously... Well, at least from my experience --- using the same Audio technica headphones and BSPlayer music player as audio player. I've saved the custom equalizer settings above as 'Mate7' because it reminds me of the sound quality of my previous Mate 7 phone. It's not a perfect match, but at least it comes close. Please note you really need good quality over-the-ear headphones if you want to overcome the Mi Max's 'poor headphone audio' shortcomings. Alternate headphones that I have thoroughly listened to and would also highly recommend are the B&W P7 and Sennheiser Momentums. I would have bought the B&W P7 had I not auditioned the Audio Technica side-by-side it and the Sennheiser Momentums. If you are serious about audio but can't give up the Mi Max for another phone with better audio components, then the recommendations above are about as good as the Mi Max can get.

FYI, the audio quality pretty impressive with IEM (Audio Technica ATH-IM50 and Trinity Audio Engineering Delta). You feel the sound is not quite loud enough because of internal amp suck. Mi Max can't handle high impedance headphone like yours (ATH-M50X). To overcome your problem, you have to pair your Mi Max with portable amp such as fiio e11k.
btw, didnt you noticed your source is clipping too much across low freq??
Actually the 'Neutron' screenshots did not show any headphones attached. The music was played on Mi Max's loudspeakers which can't reproduce low frequency so you can't hear the clipped low frequency sounds. The recording is actually only piano, vocals and cymbals. The low frequency is from instrument feedback (low frequency hum). On my ATH-M50s/LE headphones, that volume level would have been half as much since 100% is already too loud, eliminating the low frequency clipping. I don't need an external amp for my headphones. They're loud enough for me except for some Chesky recordings.
At the end of the day we shouldn't need to do any of these fixes and tweaks to make the sound from the Mi Max reasonable, Xiaomi should fix it but it seems they have very poor customer service when it comes to feedback and bugs. This Qualcomm DAC chipset is in many phones yet they don't have sound quality and loudness issues. I don't expect perfection but the Mi Max out of the box sounds worse than by budget Mediatek powered phone from 4 years ago!
i modded the mixer_paths files to make the sound louder. My roms all include this already. You need to make sure in your build.prop that fluence is enabled by making sure there is a line that says ro.qc.sdk.audio.fluencetype=fluence and make sure the two lines persist.audio.fluence.voicecall and persist.audio.fluence.speaker are set to true. Then flash this in twrp or replace your three mixer paths files in system/etc with the ones in the zip file.

Try out Foobar2000 (available on the Play Store, free & open source) instead of Neutron & you can skip the entire default sound processing with usage of the Open SL sound output & you will find a built in DSP section mostly sufficient. I am against modifying sound picture to much & as much as I sow in GSM Arena review the output sound picture is almost perfect & thick behind iPhone 6s (I plan to buy Max now). Rest is mostly influenced by quality of sound source & used headphones. For more well use dedicated external DAC & Amp.

Would actually rather increase (in small steps) output volume
In <!-- Play Scenario --> section for headphones & speaker if I whose you.
Don't exaggerate with it!
Best regards.
I did the opposite and reduced headphone volume to get rid of the hissing. I had the same problem on the Note 3 Pro, on MIUI 8 and CM13/CM14, so it's down to how the Qualcomm mixers are configured. By reducing gain and turning off companders you're dropping the noise floor. The drawback is that headphone volume is low, so this hack only works well with low impedance IEMs like Xiaomi Pistons.
1. Get rooted, open up all mixer_path_*.xml files in /system/etc.
2. Change HPHL Volume and HPHR Volume to a low value like 2.
3. Change any Comp* Switch values to 0.
4. Change RX HPH Mode to CLS_H_HIFI
5. Reboot and enjoy.
My own solution - Use VLC. Fixes the volume problem well - after you set the Audio Output to ES

Use Foobar2000 instead, VLC is bad when it comes to music.

Sound boost without root?

Hey, I'm finding the volume through headphones a bit low sometimes, depending on the mp3...
I've used Dolby Atmos in the past with other phones, but that required rooting, twrp, flashing.... I wouldn't like to have to do the same with this phone. Is there any app or adjustment I can make to boost the volume a bit? I'm already using Ex Equalizer pro, but I don't hear a substantial difference...
Thanks in advance!

Not a solution - android newbie here.
Signed up to this website to troubleshoot the same issue. I suspect this is a software limitation imposed somewhere in the OS or added on top by the manufacturer, but I consider this a significant con on this phone. I tried listening to music while working out last night and it was just far too low to enjoy, ended up just going with my old iPod instead. I've tried out a few "volume booster" and "EQ" apps but the result as expected is just software based wave scaling that significantly distorts audio without actually increasing output power. If you are interested in audio quality, software EQ is not a solution at all.
I would imagine there would be a system file somewhere that can adjust this but that would likely require root access and whether or not it's in plain readable text is anybody's guess. Unfortunately this is my first Android device so I'm clueless.
I'll try looking for the application posted above.. let's see
update: poweramp isn't free, and from what I'm seeing does nothing that I can't do much better using VLC.
Veering off topic slightly, but is there a solution for users who are willing to root to the device? I'm asking for something that produces higher output voltage from the headphone jack.

Viper4Android can give much better output with certain profiles, but requires root and it's not advisable to root Honor 7X as stock firmware is not released by Honor yet. In most cases one will end up with a bricked phone or a phone without any OTA's
So... Nothing to do? I'd really love more volume but I don't want to root...

You have to search for a music player which can amplify the sound, most have it as a setting called "Gain". Neutron and Poweramp can do this but they are paid.
Sent from my Nexus 5X using XDA Labs

For music download VLC media player (it's free). It's what I went with for now. When you play a song find the menu and bring up the equalizer. At the top of the equalizer is a horizontal bar for volume, you can crank the gain up a bit with that. At 100% it will distort but you can get a nice little boost with it without significantly distorting your music. That's what I'm doing for now. None of the volume boosting apps system-wide have produced any respectable results for me, so for YouTube I'm still stuck with low volume. You can try searching the play store for volume boosters if you don't mind distortion for everything else.
On the other hand, I'm wondering if Bluetooth buds will be able to get me the volume I want. I have a Bluetooth headset but it sounds atrocious for music. Otherwise I'll have to buy a portable amp. Either solution is totally ridiculous IMO.
Honor 7x is a solid phone, even the gimped US model I bought. This is the only problem I've come across with it thus far. I doubt Oreo will fix it, so I'll be waiting until the phone can be reliably rooted.
I'll try VLC and see what I can do with Google play music.
Thanks for your inputs!

[MOD] Increase Max Headphones Volume for custom Oreo Roms

Here is a simple mod that allows you to increase the maximum headphones volume in Oreo custom ROMS for Vince, here's three files:
Original: restore the original max headphones volume in Oreo Custom ROMs
85% Boost (recommended): Increase the max headphones volume to something like the original levels in MIUI, this one doesn't cause distortion or noise.
100% Boost: Increase the max headphones volume to 100% Use at your own risk! May cause distortion, noise, hearing loss or headphones damage.
Requirements:
Unlocked Bootloader
TWRP
Oreo based Custom ROM
Installation:
Dowload the file and flash with TWRP, doesn't need to wipe anything, reboot and test.
Tested on:
Resurrection Remix
Liquid Remix
AEX (AOSP Extended)
Pixel Experience
Havoc OS
Dot OS
Thanks for the great mod. Before I had to max out the volume and it was still not enough. Now I seldom need full volume most of the times i keep it one or two steps lower and thats with the 85% boost.
One question, does it affect bluetooth headphones? Because today I tried a pair of headphones I was considering to buy and they felt nice to me but the loudness was underwhelming. I had changed ROMs so I didnt have the mod installed that time. So will this mod improve that or there isnt a way to increase the volume of those headphones? Because I'll only buy them if I can increase the loudness.

This mod does not affect Bluetooth Headphones because Bluetooth headphones has his own DAC, I'll try to research if its possible to increase the loudness, but I'm pretty sure that its not possible over Bluetooth headphones.
Thanks  worked perfectly in Pixel Experience Rom ? 85% is enough I think

Hello, it worked perfectly for me, I wanted to ask you if you could create a mod that works in the custom roms that is to increase the volume, as well as MIUI, the volume of the speakers

Sorry, I only was able to decrease the volume, I was thinking to just set a higher value, but when I try to increase, the speaker reach a limit and I don't notice a louder volume at all, maybe it's a secure limitation, but I need to do a extensive research. But for now, you can use Viper4Android V15, it's a magisk module, I suggest to enable "speaker optimization" And "eXtra Loud" In speaker tab, and under "master gate" You can set the "Output Gain" To 3dB, also you can use the equalizer optionally. It's not the best solution, especially in max volume, but it's good enough, I think it's safer way to do that without compromise the speaker integrity.
