Best Roms on Nexus 7? - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

Just got a new Nexus haven't even powered it on yet, and I was curious what Android version has the best Rom support on this device?
Would it be advisable in your opinion to bring it all the way up to marshmallow or would I have more options temporarily staying on lollipop? Or is marshmallow just fraught with problems or anything to that effect? I had some devices in the past that just plain sucked for a while when the new version came out.
Thanks in advance. I did read up on several things but that's not going to compare to the experiences you guys have. I appreciate it.

If u want performance , better battery life and do not care about a higher number in Android version in about tab of system settings and fancy animations here and there, I suggest u go with Android 4.4.4, especially Mahdi 2.9 Final ROM with ElementalX 2.15 kernel and get a LP/MM theme from Play Store that is compatible with CM11 theme engine. Lollipop and Marshmallow are not optimised at all for Nexus 7 2013, they transform it in a 2009 device. But if u want MM or LP , I suggest Dirty Unicorns with stock kernel (Unicorn Blood) which is fantastic or ElementalX/Glitch Kernel.

Pure nexus rom(6.0.1) runs flawlessly on my nexus 7... It went while on wifi 6 days no use and only used 20% of the battery with tapatalk running Gmail and YouTube along with titanium backup running every night...you can run the latest without issue or compromise. Oh running xposed also no issue.

I came here to ask this same question haha.
I'm runnning Screw'd rom for my Nexus 7 and it's been pretty damn great to be honest. Apart from little glitches here and there, it runs flawlessly. (Okay maybe not little glitches, but sometimes I'll turn it on from standby and it won't detect any touch inputs at all, then I have to restart it and it works fine)
Thanks though Admiral, I think I'm going to try out the Pure rom and see how it goes. Also happy that Xposed is running fine. Hell yes!

I'm not sure anymore, I liked Tesla but that project isn't updated anymore for the N7 I believe, CleanROM isn't updated anymore either so I'm still trying to find which is best for me. I'm thinking about sticking to stock with maybe a custom Kernel for overclocking and double-tap to wake.

In the past I preferred Paranoid Android, Pac-Man and Cyanogenmod, how would you say this Mahdi 2.9 ROM compares to those in the way of customization?
I was looking to see what was available in the way of those on 4.4.4 and 5.1.1 the other night. Seems like the last time Paranoid was good was on 4.4.4 and Cyanogenmod seems like it didn't have any stable releases on 5.1.1 from what I can see but nightlys available.
Wondering 4.4.4 has a stable cyanogenmod? I don't mean to be lazy about dealing with nightlys (I have in the past) but I'm Uber busy nowadays. Still I'm a suckered for the customization lol ??? it's a terrible dilemma

U have all the UI customisation that other ROMs have on Mahdi and for me is the best 4.4.4 ROM with ElementalX kernel. Haven't used PA in a very long time so I dunno how the latest release of 4.4.4 is. I have never touched CM on this device because there is no Official CM maintainer for flo/deb and never will and if we get fixes and updates at mercy's will just because Google still supports it and no dev tests anything, I prefer to keep away from it. For example on 5.x.x there was a bug that was fixed after a few months

Cyanogenmod ROM issues/advice

Hi everyone.
I had cyanogenmod 7 installed on HTC desire z for some time.
I decided to try out the unofficial cyanogenmod 9 here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1492461
At first it was great but since then it has become unstable. Programs regularly lock up for a long period when opening them or crash all out.
I cleared the cache partition last week and it improved things but its already back to how bad it was.
I'm considering going back to cyanogenmod 7
Before I go back to cyanogenmod 7 I was wondering if anyone had any advice on how I can solve my issues. I could try a different cyanogenmod 9 ROM or a cyanogenmod 10 ROM but I'm wondering what you think. does anyone have any experience with any of these.
t-mobile g2 on 10.1 cm andromadus vision 12
i am t-mobile g2 on 10.1 cm andromadus vision 12. the performance has been stable but very slow. the fault is the outdated hardware. but CM 10.1 (JB 4.2.1) strikes me as an awesome build. if you want jelly bean, try it. :good:
if you want speed, let me know what you find. i am about to leave this build because the slowness is crippling (causes me to make errors in usage). i don't know where to go, but it seems like aosp is possibly the democratic choice... i continue to seek a recommend. will migrate in coming days. will report back. :fingers-crossed:
these cm people are pious saints. have informed vatican to beautify but was informed that i have no vote since i am dothead. :cyclops: so be it. amen. :silly:
sept 6, '13-
actually, i flashed Gen Y Vision X R3 on the G2. it has been a pretty good experience: slow but stable. i have now bought an htc one. so, i will leave you to try out the Gen Y ROM. really liked it. love this place cho muchy!
My opinion after playing around with a bunch of 4.0+ ROM's yesterday, since the G2 is now my backup phone. You want reliability and responsiveness/speed; stick with Gingerbread 2.3 ROMs (latest CM7 Nightly, ILWT, and etc). You want 4.0+ (as a daily driver) get a new device, which is why I got a Nexus 4 personally. A G2 with 4.0+ doesn't even compare to one running Gingerbread 2.3.
A properly setup CM7 ROM is perfect. KBreezie SD-EXT mod, V6 Supercharger w/ KAK & Multitasking Mod. This setup was running @ 806mhz with about twice as many apps as I was running on the 4.0+ ROMs. Result is it was faster than any 4.0 ROM that were clocked at 1.5ghz, so much so that you would think you were on a new device.

Yeah I was under the impression that moving to CM9 would be faster but in practice I find its a hell of a lot slower than CM7 and its no where near stable. I like the UI improvements that come with the latest android but thats really no big deal, I'd rather have a fast and stable phone.
I'm looking to get a new phone but I like the physical keyboard and no one seems to be doing one like that at the moment. So for now I think I'll stick to cyanogenmod 7
I would too recommend to stick to CM 7.2 for now. After some much flashing of radios (felt dangerois) and a brief flash of a Sense 4.0a rom (to get accelerometers working) I finally have a pretty decent JB setup. The andromadus flinny 10.1 B19 is working quite OK, but CM 7.2 admittedly has more RAM available and is faster, I had it clocked ad 24x->1506 MHz and it was rock solid.
Earlier when I tested the B18 flinny build I suddenly lost my camera. This combined with missing accelerometers had me almost going back to 7.2. Then a friend of mine noted that B19 was out, so I had to try that.
The B18 had some occasional lagging, while B19 is now my choice. I'm willing to take the speed penalty though.
I suggest You try both, and the You decide yourself.
I'm using Flinny Andromadus CM10.1 (JellyBean 4.2.2) and it is working great, no overclocking needed. Phone is fast. I of course wiped my data but pics/vids were still saved. JB is truly an amazing OS... a lot of new widgets and features that I never knew the G2 would ever see... I highly suggest you try it out. You can always back up your data using Clockwork Recovery mode.
You can DL the zip here: http://andromadus.flinny.org/?q=node/34 <-- They have a build as of 4/10/2013 :good:

GNEX I9250 help!

So I am getting a Galaxy Nexus carrier unlocked,I assume it's GSM.(non-verizon)-I9250.It's also quad-band if it matters.
My friend has a Verizon version and I unlocked his boot-loader,installed a 4.4 stock rom, and side loaded some apps.
I've had an android phone before, but haven't used one for over 1 year.
Still pretty confused how I managed to remember some of the stuff.
Assuming I unlock mine(if it isn't already) does anyone have a nice fast rom they've used?
I won't do much on my phone, email, browser, music, etc....
I was looking for MIUI V5 rom, but only found the "toro" version, which I assume is the verizon variant.
I think my phone is "maguro",which has HSPA+.
So can you guys set me up with the best "stock" rom and a MIUI rom aswell?
Don't want to flash a CDMA rom and brick my phone before I use it.....
GSM Galaxy Nexus is maguro. I remember checking last month that MIUI is not on KitKat yet.
As for "stock" ROM you should check out Shiny ROM and if you mean any AOSP-based ROM there are many good ROMs and "best" is subjective.
But in my own opinion, the most stable one right now is SlimKat because it is not affected by the new CM theme engine bug. Many other ROMs based on CM with the new theme engine will crash very often with systemui not working and that is frustrating.

I personally have the XenonHD with the Franco kernel and I can confirm that it is very stable and improves the battery lifetime considerably.
My 2 cents

I'm on ParanoidAndroid version 4.3-BETA4. This one is smooth and stable with an excellent battery life. With BETA6 I experience the crashes jkleo mentions.

Sorry, which kind of crashes happen? In XenonHd sometimes the notification roller freezes and relaunches the whole UI in half a minute. Is this kind of crashes?

Pretty sure my Nexus has screen issues. I can see some distorted lines when I view something white mostly(like google.com)
Happens with other lighter colors too.
Might have to return the phone, since it's bothering me.
Trying some other roms/stock to see if maybe it was the rom.

Looking for recommendations on stable "Slim" style roms

My brother in law wants me to downgrade his phone from 4.4.2, the update messed him up bad. I have previously installed Slimbean on his old Infuse 4g and he loved it. So here I am looking through pages of roms for a phone I don't know a lot about and im lost in all the newest versions trying to find an old one. I realize it does not make a whole lot of sense to most people but due to some of the apps he uses not having been updated he needs to go to 4.3 or lower to have them all work again. So what are your recommendations for the most stable 4.0-4.3 roms?
There are a couple 4.3 Roms just choose and flash. Or if you want aosp flash cm 10.1 or 10.2 not really sure. I've yet to see an app the hasn't worked on kit Kat, from my experience apps runs much smoother and less fc.

Looking for real AOSP 4.4x ROM

Hi Guys,
I'm looking for a stock-like (vanilla) ROM based on Android 4.4x.
I tried some AOSP ROMs, but they were full of bloated 3rd party apps and annoying mods.
Any recommendations?
Thanks!
Have you tried Shiny ?

Not yet, but I'm going to.
Like @crs7 said,Shiny is your best bet. Its like what official stock 4.4 would have been for our device. If you want slightly more features like theme chooser and reordering quick toggles,I'd suggest Paranoid Android.

I tried Paranoid Android (latest stable build), it's really decent, but i was having random graphical lags on my device.
Hmm, running the alpha build. It seems fine for me
I flashed Shiny ROM and that's pretty much what I wanted.
There is a minor graphical lag there-and-there. I guess it appears on all 4.4x ROMs... I can live with it.
I'll give Paranoid Android another try.
I'm going with Paranoid, it seems a lot more stable than Slim. Thanks for the advice.
Shiny would be your way to go if you want to get the most of AOSP and no more. but if you want a bit more features than what AOSP offered, try Paranoid Android 4.44, you will like its balanced stability and usability.

shiny...
its up to date as you can ask for.
make an odin flash able tar ball and that's all there is

So like which ROM do you prefer?

So like I've had this phone for a couple weeks...OK like a few. I gave up my LG K7 which is newer just to use it but that's not the point of this thread. I'm mostly wondering which ROM do you guys prefer? Like I've tried OCT-OS 6 and 7 and Ressurection Remix 7 and at the moment I'm running Slim Rom 6 since it's the fastest so far.
Yes I've read the FAQ saying it's what works best for me but really I want an opinion. Like I'm thinking of going down to Slim Rom running Kitkat but then again do I really wanna go to a out of date version of android?
Anyway what do you guys think?
Slimkat Stable 9 with Quantum KK kernel runs better on my phone than anything else.
It is terribly out of date from a security patch standpoint, but I'm just using this phone as a media player and glorified remote control with a throwaway account so not big deal. Honestly though, as long as you don't browse the underbelly of the internet or sideload a bunch of janky apps your risk is probably fairly low.
I'm running stock ROM with root on Android 4.4.2, I like touch wiz so I stuck with stock.
