How-to S_ON back to stock firmware + ota updates? - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey,
i currently run cm13 on my phone but i really would like to get back to stock. I found a sht-ton of guides but i really dont know where to start. If i run a nand backup (philz) will i be able to receive ota updates? Which firmware do i have to flash? Flash the stock recovery as well? What first? A step by step help would be really appreciated. I am not looking forward to pay 25$ for S_Off and as far as i can tell there is no other way to get S_off.
If you need any infos feel free to ask.
Thank you very much in advance

You usually don't need S-Off to return to stock and OTA.
First thing to do is getting to know your device variant.
Then we'll see what actually that you need.
Post fastboot getvar all result (without serial & imei no.)

Not working at all. After flashing the kernel and the recovery i got an error while relocking which leads to a reboot and a bootloop.
After i unlocked it again and flashed the newest twrp and a cm12.1 rom i tried it again (for some it helped) but i got the same thing again and was stuck at the bootloop once again. Any other way to do this or am i doing something wrong ?
EDIT: The failure is no problem at all. RUU has to be run in the fastboot mode which i can access. Didnt know that but its working now. Can be closed.

I've tried recovery/roms pushed from fastboot and from zip updates and the same thing boot screen for a sec black bootscreen again reboot. Pwr vol+ works but recovery is will not come up, wipe avail but not factory reset choice. I've pushed various recommended recovery and boot images, and they all say success but have zero effect. I'm guessing it's that s-on is on but with out recovery I'm not having any luck, any ideas?

So when you use the PC36IMG to flash a recovery what happens? Any error messages or failures? From what you have here looks like only a stock recovery is installed.
The bootloader should boot scan the file and ask you if you want to upgrade. Does this happen for you?
Sent from my GT-N7105 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Everything acts like it works, blue bar installing from a zip or pushing from fastboot gives "success" but they are not actually being installed as far as I can tell. I'm not sure if it's because it s-on? I got root with the htcdev method but getting s-off for this version is pretty murky the guide from this just mentions downgrading and a link but doesn't give clear what/how to downgrade and if a cust rec won't flash I doubt downgrading will either.. "Fastboot device" sees the phone but "adb device" doesn't, is adb supposed to use the "bootoader driver", even though I tried switching the driver still did not allow adb to see it I've never found a clear explanation of the diff drivers offered?..
What recovery version are you using? I highly recommend the Smelkus recovery for this particular device.
Sent from my HTC M8
Thanks, but I've passed this on to the next over confident ebayer, hope he has more skillz, btw I tried smelkus with no effect, other than getting root I don't think anything else actually did anything I fb flashed at least 6 diff. recovery img's flashed the boot, unzipped the stock image and did "flash all", Zip updated with various recovery imgs of full stock, cyanogen and some 4.0 based installs and while most all them said "success" as far as I can tell nothing actually changed., hopefully they next guy needs it for parts..

I bought an m8 in china, last year. My sister tried an ota update, the phone lock on bot. So i tried to flash many rom but no success, every flash failed on the last step, the " verification signature checking... " with " FAILED (remote: 12 signature verify fail) ".

Since you're S-ON, you will not be able to flash RUUs or firmware below your current ROM version. You can however restore twrp backups of Lollipop ROMs which work fine with your current 6.12 Marshmallow firmware. Otherwise, you can use twrp to flash any custom ROM based on marshmallow & lollipop.
Here's a link to stock marshmallow RUU (6.12.401.4) in zip format, which you should flash from bootloader.

I flash the twrp's recovery. I can access to it but when I try to go to install the zip file, twrp refuse to install it with "Zip file is corrupt". I double check md5 sum and they seems to be correct =( .
I also try to flash it with fastboot, just in case, and no result but with a different error: "(bootloader) zip header checking... FAILED (remote: 32 header error) "

You don't flash RUUs with TWRP, you flash them with fastboot in RUU mode. Which you seemed to know based on your top post, so I'm not sure why you tried to flash with TWRP this time.

You need to relock your bootloader to RUU with s-on.
Command: fastboot oem lock

I'm not sure which way you want to go, but:
1. To flash the RUU zip file:
A. You need to put it at the root of your SD CARD and rename it to 0P6BIMG.zip
B. Turn your phone off, then start it into bootloader.
C. Follow the instructions in RED to flash. You will lose all data as the RUU will format all partitions.
2. To install a custom ROM or restore a twrp-specific backup, use TWRP's install function, or restore function respectively.
Cheers

I'm not sure what RUUs you have tried to flash, but this is the last RUU version for your model (T-Mo Germany)
You can flash it with fastboot commands in RUU mode, or you can flash it via the SD card method.
The SD card method is easiest. Rename the .zip by deleting everything in the name of it except for 0P6BIMG (and .zip of course), put it onto your extSD, and boot to bootloader. The rest is pretty much automatic.
Note that since you are S-On, you will have to relock your bootloader first with either method. The command for that is fastboot oem lock
Good luck!
Very helpful thread. Wanted to ask for help here, but already solved the issue

Bricked HTC M8s impossible to relock bootloader

Hello Guys.
I just bought htc m8s which is bricked. It stuck in boot loader / fastboot mode.
When i want to turn it on, hboot starts and after select recovery phone goes to fastboot.
Boot loader is unlocked and its impossible to relock it.
I allredy tried to flash twrp via fastboot, and flash ruu via sd card. I was using 0PKVIMG_M8_QL_UL_M60_SENSE70_HTC_Europe_2.10.401.1 _Radio_1.0.U20410.1 @ 60201_20.05_018_F_release_479349_combined_signed.z ip
And it finished with an error : "device halted due to large image update fail" due to unlocked bootloader.
I have no idea what to do, will be grateful for any help

I have the same issue of an UNLOCKED bootloader. From other forums it is a required to be in LOCKED mode to flash boot images. The phone is not recognized by USB.
I have tried to use 'Terminal Emulator' with instructions posted here - "forums.androidcentral.com/verizon-galaxy-nexus-rooting-roms-hacks/209313-unroot-relock-my-nexus.html#post2160467"
I could not find param.zip that is needed to be installed on the SD card.
Any help is appreciated to restore this excellent paperweight to its former glory.
