[Q] Would you buy this phone again?

OK, So I'm shopping for a new phone,
I've been enjoying getting my feet wet with a comparatively low end model & am becoming somewhat addicted to constantly tinkering, have managed to compile my own kernel and now feel the need for an upgrade.
This (Desire Z) is currently at the top of my list as it seems to be well supported by the dev community & I really want a qwerty keypad!
So, as users of this phone & knowing what you know now...
Would you buy this phone again?

Well, I love my Z and i think it works fast and the keyboard is amazing. But the problem these days is: Dual core phones are coming out a lot right now, and even the fast processor of the G2 can't compare to that. So, as much as i love my Desire Z, I would wait a while for a Dual Core HTC (like the Pyramid).
But ofcourse: If you REALLY want a phone right now, a Desire Z with an Otterbox Commuter case is my recommendation! (since I personally love the Otterbox case, hehe.)

I hear what you're saying, my thinking right now is that in order to learn more about kernel & ROM development, is that I should be getting something that has a good amount of hacking & dev work behind it already.
The newer phones are less charted waters & I'm not experienced enough to be a pioneer
Will be sure to look at the otterbox case

Yep, that's also true. And indeed, there is alof of development going on for the Desire Z, it's great. And so many awesome roms to choose from as well.

As Hubba88 said, at this point, I'd wait for a dual core like the HTC Pyramid/Sensation. But, I love my G2 and am very happy with the purchase. Great keyboard, capacitive buttons are in the right place, very responsive trackpad. All in all typically great HTC build quality. CyanogenMod support is a huge plus as well for this phone.

If I knew that the z hinge was going to be so ****ty no,I would not buy it again. I'd go for a unibody design instead.

If the keyboard is important to you, as well as the tinkering aspect, then I reckon this is a good phone.
Not sure there has been much talk of dual core's with keyboards? So a real Desire Z upgrade may be some way beyond the next few HTC phones. Even then when they come out it takes time to build the developer base behind it and get rooting sorted etc. I moved a month and a bit ago and reckon there will be nothing to make me desperately want an upgrade for at least a year.
Look how well the desire has done and still does. The DZ has a better processor and more storage on board etc. The overclockability of the chip seems to be something that will extend its lifespan in terms of performance against the newer phones.
Always worth remembering that there is often quite a difference between phones being rumoured, then announced, and then actually on sale and being hacked. Therefore if a desire Z replacement is not yet in the rumours, it will likely be quite a while before its out there in the real world.
So yeah, I think its a good phone, although not perfect.
As I have insurance with my contract I will be OK with any problems with the Hinge - but none so far.

I voted yes but if I were in the market for a phone now I'd wait till the G2x was available and compare side by side. I suspect I'd get that one because it's newer, faster and has a more future proof AT&T compatible radio.

I've been following the Official thread on which phone should I get for some weeks which does talk about the latest & greatest dual core's an awful lot, but, as I said above the support & dev work that has gone into the DZ already is probably the biggest factor for me, it should give me a good base to work/learn from.

I saw in Hubba88's sig that 1.3Ghz is achievable, that seems more than fast enough given the apps that are currently available. I'm thinking it will take a while for any apps to be taking advantage of dual cores...
Re Hinge, well I can cope with that if it becomes an issue, the teardown & repair looks pretty straight forward.

Even 1.9 ghz is achievable . And I haven't had any problems with my hinge, it's pretty sturdy.

If you need a phone now, get the DZ.
If you can wait, wait until the quad core phones come out in 2012.

I love my G2 but I would not buy this phone again. With Swiftkey I find that I never use the hardware keyboard which was the main reason I bought my G2. If I could go back in time I would get a Nexus S or maybe a galaxy s.

Obvious answer is obvious:
Why get the same phone again when it has been 6 months since it first came out, therefore rendering the phone "obsolete", so to speak. If I had half a grand cash in my pocket right now I would wait for the HTC Pyramid (Their Dual Core).

Read back to the comments on DHD forums when that came out. Same with the Sensation. They both had teething issues for some users, and I don't regret getting either. There will always be people with problems, and they will be the most vocal.

OI! Thats my phone, get yourself something else!!!

I recommend iPhones to most people only because most people I know just want something easy to use. Not that Android is easy, but Apple is easier and they can just take it into an Apple Store if something doesn't work. The support system is much better.
HOWEVER, the One X is a much better phone than anything else on the market!

Yes there is reports of minor issues on some of them but its nothing major and will be fixed the only I have is battery life mine dies faster that my gf she got 18 hours out of first charge the difference is I'm a heavy user she isn't

I guess U should. Since U are coming from desire.
But for me, the reason I got one was initially because of the "big" screen. Am using a titan currently and absolutely love the screen minus the lower pixel count. When I got One x, I was quite disappointed actually. I dun quite like the material used and the "bigger" screen. Its the screen ratio that actually turned me off.. The screen is taller but not really much wider than my trusty hd2. So, the "bigger screen is not what I had expected. Speed wise, blazing fast compared to my hd2. But, do I really need blazing? I guess not.. I can bare with a few millisec of waiting time. So, I am kinda disappointed tbh. IMHO.

Anyone had THE argument yet?

Yes, but wait for the battery saving update coming and for some cases in the shops. My camera feels way to exposed to scratches so have ordered a clear back case which is 10 days away. Screen is amazing compared it to s2 and iPhone 4s and they don't even come close.

I'd recommend it, but if you are the kind of user who wants a flawless experience from the start = wait 2 weeks so all the bugs are updated.

My first few hours coming from a DHD I was sceptical because I was so used to the DHD and the Virtuous affinity ROM is amazingly smooth.
After 1 day I am completely loving the one x.
It's holding battery much better than my DHD with the same accounts syncing too.
The camera and screen are actually stunning, not just a turn of phrase. I was jaw dropped streaming HD and filming 1080p.
I actually prefer using my one x with headphones for media than my laptop and TV put together now

I recommend it.

Honestly, no. Not yet.
I would wait to see what HTC do to address the awful battery life and overheating before buying.
If the reviews would have been more realistic, I would have been in a better position to judge.
Feel let down by the main reviewers, but then they did have an update that us mere peasants aren't allowed. Sketchy move from HTC if you ask me, the phone we get is not what was reviewed. Foul.

I can't help wondering why they chose to release an update that fixes a lot ONLY to the press... It makes no sense to me?

Clearly they weren't sure about it's stability/hadn't bug-tested it enough to release to all of their customers.
Should be out soon though

Because they needed to get it to them before the reviews were published, so that they'd reflect what HTC intended the user experience to be like before the handset was released to the public later that week.
Sensible though that strategy is, it sort of comes undone when you don't push that update to the retail handsets in time for them going on general sale. I imagine it was because the 1.27 update was a quick hack to fix the major outstanding issues that would be likely to turn up in reviews, whereas 1.28 would need to be fully tested before being delivered (because having effectively supplied a handset with pre-release software there'd be hell on if the first update didn't work perfectly), but it could still have been handled better.

I`m coming from the DHD and the Sensation XE.
And i`m loving the new bigger screen.
The colors,..The sharpness it`s just a marvel
But again what works for one doesn`t have to work for all.

What phone to get after Desire?

I had HTC Desire for nearly 3 years, and it is a great phone, but I think it is time to upgrade, because:
- it is annoyingly slow with my regular set of programs installed, even on fastest available roms
- it doesn't have kernel 3.0, and because of that JB roms have shortcomings
- a little bit too small screen for GPS navigation
- really crappy camera
- somewhat short battery life
Some time ago I had a chance to look at Galaxy S2 in person and it looked like a perfect phone (at least for 2 minutes I had it in my hands).
Somewhat bigger screen, more internal storage, kernel 3.0.
I use custom roms, so big development community is important for me. I have been spoiled by Desire as it (still) has a large one.
Galaxy S2 would cost me around 170-200 euro to get it.
Should I take that, or look for something else in this price range?
My requirements:
- larger screen (not necessarily much larger)
- android (duh)
- solid build quality
- large development community
- noticeably faster CPU than Desire (Dual+ core would come in handy)
- microUSB
- good/very good camera
- good battery life
- price up to 200 euro (used)
- would be nice if it had FM transmitter (not receiver) but it is not necessary
- it must by BLACK or therebout

I also considered s2 but there's one serious setback to it. Namely, the screen is amoled and without pentile matrix.
What's bad about it you ask? pixels that are frequently used lose color and items that you have on screen for most time are somewhat paler than the rest of the screen, and you can see their shadow for the whole time, ppl reported that with all amoled displays and non pentile of s2 is even more susceptible to that. That happens even to devices 3 months old, depending on how heavily they are used I guess. You can google it to see for yourself, just type galaxy s2 amoled burn in. There are also few good YouTube vids showing that. Items that you usually can see are burned in status bar, soft keys from your most used app, keyboard, alarm icon and "fully charged" sign across the screen as during night charging the phone lights up when battery is full and keeps the screen on until you turn it off or unplug it/on some ROMs at least, stock including/.

Is Desire not affected by that?
Then what else would you suggest?

Only first edition of desire pvt1 I believe had amoled screens, the rest are sporting slcd which is not organic and does not suffer from this burn in effect.

Go for SGS2+. It is newer phone, available almost at the same price as SGS2, probably have warranty and no burn-in effect of any major cosmetic wear.
But I think there is no black variant, but dark blue.
Price is 200-230 EUR.

S2+ makes no sense, is more expensive than regular s2, has same screen with same setbacks and worse gpu, videocoreiv vs Mali 400.
Sensation seems good, but I've got no experience with that phone.

If you want a dev community supporting your device, avoid htc phones. HTC is terribly slow when it comes to releasing updates and sources.

I disagree with you. But again, it is on him to pick something that he likes. We are here to suggest him.
I like HTC Because of Sense,speed (on some new devices) new features big rom list's etc. I dont like samsung bcs every new phone (LG,ZTE,Nokia,Sony, and many more) are copy of Samsung,Same android UI, same phone design i will say. JUST A COPY .
HTC Have some original from begining of production for me that is a great and like i sayed i will suggest you to buy some HTC Model (HTC One X, HTC Sensation.not new but very good, HTC One v (it is not so special but it is very good,speed, and it is very Cheap)
But if you want to buy some other phone mark Yes i will suggest you to but SGSII or SGSIII Mini. Mini have small Display but have great camera great speed great support and what is importatt you can find it for 170/80 Eur

+1 for the sensation, i baught mine used for 100 euro and its like brand new, i got it off a guy cheap coz it was stuck in bootloader lol, i got it home, flashed a ruu then s-off & rooted and it has great dev support, loads of sense roms, 3.5 - 3.6 - 4.1 - 4+ and now waiting for team venom to release sense 5. Also loads of JB - AOSP roms and 4.3 JB roms, really is a great phone with good hardware to handle all roms.

About sensation, the newer roms have working camera/video or is it stuck with that issue like our old desires?
And how do you cope without the trackpad, I tend to write lengthy emails/forum posts and it's a great tool when I want too correct something, yet no other phone has it. does it mean trouble for guys like me?

everything works, and i never really used trackpad on the desire.

I would never buy sensation. Death grip issues and dust under screen glass is way too much for me. Sgs2+ is ftw in my opinion.

What bout One X/S? In ireland they going for bout 175 - 225 euro, good all round phone and fairly solid.

One S would be good bargain, but no official 4.2.2 for him. He is eol already, unfortunately. One X is expensive, like S3.

My friend is selling his One X for 200 euro in mint condition, he dont use it, its just sitting in his drawer. I was gona buy it but i always wanted a sensation lol. If ur interested i could say to him, he has it a while so maybe i can get it cheaper for u. Postage would be round 10 euro. Let me know
P.S - im not dodgy r that, user k3lcior had no gps antenna so i gave him mine from my desire (coz my desire is dead), free of charge, and i posted it to poland.

well if I may make a suggestion, I would say get the Nexus 4
Pros: (according to what you listed)
larger screen and clearer screen
will always have the latest and greatest Android OS since its from Google
I don't remember the build quality on it but I know its at least better than the desire
haven't checked the dev support but since its a bit more open.... should still be better than the desire
very fast 1.5GHz quad-core CPU
microUSB
8MP camera and a 1.3MP front cam
decent 2,100 mAh battery
and most importantly it comes in Black
Cons:
its $300 which about 224 euros (so slightly over budget although sorta worth it)
no FM trasmitter
limited storage and no SD card expansion
so really its an amazing phone, its mainly only brought down by not having an SD card slot but if you find the 8 or 16GB models fine then I'd say go for it.

Best phone available IMHO and I have had them all

This is the only Android phone with the build quality of an iPhone. I couldn't be happier with mine. No sub-models to worry about either, although the MAXX is coming soon if you feel like carrying around a phablet all the time.

if at first you're worried about battery life. do not despair. it gets much better

In no particular order:
- Non replaceable batter and no SD card. Cost for a very good looking device
- Battery can last a day of normal use but you have to be careful and monitor your app usage.
- Unlockable by Rumrunner.
- Nice selection of AOSP roms, but some have issues depending on your usage.
- If you do go the flashing route and pick a AOSP rom make sure to turn on your GPS, open maps and get a lock before rebooting into the recovery. This will make sure you do not have any gps issues after the flash.
- Sounds is very nice when playing audio via the speakers.
- Camera performance is a mixed bag depending on your usage. I find it works great for quick snapshots in low light...where I am most of the time I need to capture a picture.
- Speaking of Camera, if you can check the camera at the store before taking home. Open the app and cover the lens. If it shows purple or red ask for another unit. This appears to be a build quality issue that may be fixable via software. Sprint reports very mixed results from the fix so double check before getting one.
- Verizon has an update to 4.2. We expect a 4.3 update by the end of the month...not sure what month but the end of some month .

I think Verizon is taking a long time to update to 4.3 because they want to patch Rumrunner. Wouldn't be surprised if this is the case.

Only caveat I'd say is we're missing that low power proc that's going to be all the rage in future iterations of Android (the always-on voice commands of the Moto X). If you're alright with that, it's a fine phone.
Oh, and it's missing a softkey. I've gone ahead and rooted my phone, but I have to say, I've felt very little desire to flash a new ROM (which I was doing all the time on my old HTC Droid Incredible). This phone is surprisingly satisfying as is.

I haven't seen a sub model except for the HTC One Mini. I know the One Mini lost some features since it is the smaller version of the HTC one. But one thing is that Sprint's(and I think T-Mobile's) HTC one has FM radio and Verizon/AT&T disabled/removed the fm radio functionality in theirs.
Other than the FM radio, I think everything else is just if you want GSM or CDMA.
There's also a Google Play Edition coming out for the HTC one, but you can root the HTC one now and install a GPE rom.
But I feel 100% that I made the correct choice of choosing between the S4 and the ONE. S4's user interface was too cluttered. HTC one's Sense interface is much smoother and simple. Music is great with the stereo speakers and watching movies/play games is also fun.
Check out your BB store and there might still be one on display that functions. Test it out. I spent 30 mins at BB messing around with it.

A GPE Rom for Verizon from HTC?

You have nothing to worry about if you are purchasing a HTC One, these are absolutely fantastic phones. The only downside to these phones is that they do not have a sd card or removable battery but apart from that I have not had any complaints about the phone. One of the best things about this phone is the build quality, I really do like that the phones are made from a single block of anodized aluminum, in my personal opinion I think the build quality is superior to the iPhone.
HTC Sense is also another reason to go with the HTC One over the S4. While both Touchwiz and Sense have their pros and cons, touchwiz is all about cramming as many features and settings and options into the phone as it possibly can, HTC Sense on the other hand is focused on the user experience and creating a more intuitive UI.
Another benefit to this phone is that development is moving forward rather nicely, granted things could always be better and the Verizon HTC One is by no means one of the leading phones for developers that does not mean we are without fun things to flash, I for one have thoroughly enjoyed my HTC One and I have no doubt in my mind that I will continue to enjoy this phone for years to come, it is that awesome. The Verizon HTC One has only been out for a little over 2 months and we already have 2 different s-off methods and multiple Sense, AOSP and GPE Roms for users to choose from, not to mention it appears that Team Venom will be making an appearance in our development section in the near future. I have not personally used a Venom rom but from what I have heard their roms are in the same league as the CyanogenMod roms, a lot of people here are anxiously awaiting the Venom rom release.

Another benefit of the HTC One is the Dropbox promotion, you get 23 gigs of space for 2 years. In order to get the promotion to work you need to install Newt's NOS rom and follow the instructions in my post - Dropbox 23GB Promotion - Workaround
One of the few complaints I do have is that the kernel source has not been released yet for the Verizon HTC One, there is no doubt that this will eventually be released but when that will happen is anyone guess, it could happen next week or after Christmas.

I do not know if we are getting a Verizon GPE HTC One, however we do have these two roms in the dev section - NOS 1.0.2 m7wlv Google Play Edition - and - Eclipse One Google Play Edition

Still worth buying?

I can finally sign a new contract and my old m7 is about to die (it doesn't really charge anymore). Point is I need a new phone now and I can't wait for the m9 (also will be too pricy) and my carrier doesn't offer Motorola or Nexus Devices. Crappy Samsung is out so the only alternative would be xperia z3 which is a couple of month older. I liked the m7 and I am a general fan of HTC but is it still a better choice then the Sony one?

I think most people here are happy with the phone. Is LG not an option? Not necessarily better but they also make a good phone.

Such a loaded question. I typically wouldn't advise buying a current flagship which will probably be replaced by a new flagship in the next few months (some rumors claim Q1, or even a launch next week). But given your current phone's condition, and budget limitations, I'd still say the M8 is still probably the best phone around.
When it comes down to brass tacks, if I broke my phone today and had to buy a new replacement phone immediately, it would likely be another M8.

Nahh i don't want any plastic phone. The choice really seems to be between m8 and z3.

I would just pick up a used M8 for the time being, and wait for M9 before signing another contract for hardware upgrade.

Agreed.
The M8 is still a great phone - one of the best (if not THE best) front facing speakers, prompt and solid updates thanks to their being a GPE version (Sense updates come relatively quick as well - they are one of the best with pushing updates) and fantastic build quality... Also the following/support on XDA for the M8 is fantastic. There are some great developers working with this device. If rooting and customizing your phone is up your ally, the M8 is one of the best out there.
Lollipop on the GPE edition is great, you won't get a fast stable lollipop release from any other phone unless it is a nexus and other GPE phones. Touchwiz and LG's skins just slow things down and can actually cause issues (Google "chromecast systemui crash" and you will see that stock unrooted samsung and LG phones tend to have issues casting media within certain apps due to the way they code their volume sliders. There is an Xposed patch to get around this. Still lame that is something that occurs with their stock devices when trying to use a Chromecast.) . If you have a regular Sense One m8, the GPE conversion is pretty damn easy if you want more a stock android feel along with quick updates.
VS Sony Xperia Z3 --> Sony has the better specs (more ram, better camera, water proof) BUT OS updates tend to be slower - Still no stock or stable Lollipop available for that device.

I ordered the M8 in gunmetal gray. I don't think I will regret it, this phone will still be up to date for long enough.
