I just got the AFTV2. I got kodi installed and I want to view multimedia on my qnap nas which is on a smb share. I went to videos->add video source -> browse and selected windows network. I got "error 2: share not available" I then added the smb share manually and I get the same error.
I did a search and from what I gather it should work out of the box. I'm connected over ethernet so its not a network issue. The smb share works fine on my other devices and I haven't changed anything on that end. The only variable right now is the new aftv2.
nevermind it was a typo on the manual entry. It wont automatically find the smb share because of the login/password required.

Has anyone else had any issues connecting to Windows shares?
I've installed XBMC on my Ouya and set it up with a shared DB which it can see without any problems but it cannot reach the files themselves which are on the same server as the DB.
I tired using ES too but that timed out when trying to connect.
Is there something I'm missing, I've tried over wifi and ethernet?

I am having the same problem, I have XBMC installed and it seesm to work fine with youtube, hulu, etc. But I cannot connect to any of my network shares. I have them shared on a Win7 PC, and all PCs in the house can access the share fine, but I cannot even see the network shares on the Ouya. Either by adding network location, or under SMB? I used to have XBMC on an Xbox1 and I was able to set that up fine, using the same method and shares. Not sure what the issue is, I am adding a NAS HD to my Router directly (USB), and setting up shares on it, to see if the XBMC on Ouya CAN see that. If that doesn't work, I may try another version of XBMC, maybe the newest?
I ended up giving up and giving it to my parents to use with a USB hard drive, suits their needs ok but won't be recommending an Ouya to anyone else.
I've had no problem connecting to my network shares... both from XBMC and from CIFSManager...
password protected & permissions

1. turn off password protected file sharing
2. and set folder or drive permissions to Everyone
that should work, it worked for me
Is this possible? Can get it to work instantly with es file Explorer. But not with xbmc. Steps I taken are as follows add network location - protocol windows network smb - server name (ip address) share folder - movies - username and password are also correct. But nothing. What exactly am I doing wrong?
Never mind. Was heading in the complete wrong direction for what I wanted.. Now sorted.

What settings in your d link router did you change? Having a bit of a nightmare with getting my tp link setup. Judt get connection timeout errors
I am able to mount the SMB shared folders in SPMC and Kodi from my netgear R7000 router/128gb flash drive.
I had some issues with access on a Windows PC if I enabled permissions to the usb drive from the router. If I removed all permissions (allow guest mode) then it works. Not sure if this is useful but might be something to try.
I change my router's settings several times and always works smb with kodi. Can you view the router's log file?

In XBMC, are you searching for SMB types or manually adding a SMB?

I've tried both methods. Searching finds me nothing. And when adding manually.. (trying from my mac right this second) I'm getting lock settings?
You need to enter to router config, example 192.168.0.1, and navigate to logs menu.
It depends on your router model.
If you are on a MAC, try this: http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/41541/smbup.
Sets up as a server. You can add folders as shared drives and you get all your metadata. I use it on a wired connection. It's great.
Hi there
I got 3 external hard drives plugged into a Amazon Basic USB 4 Hub, this is then connected to the single USB socket on my home router.
Using Kodi I can access my folders and added all my movies to KODI, streams brilliantly
Question is if I take my AFTV outside of my home network, how do I get KODI to connect to my movies?
I used to use plex and my router is already setup.
Won´t work that easy way. The SAMBA/CIFS or UPnP (DLNA) protocols which are used in most cases by routers for local streaming are designed for a local network not for use via Internet or between networks behind different router NATs.

Install PleXBMC client on the FTV, works for me but I have a NAS running Plex Server.
Look in the settings of your router and see what options it has for sharing what's plugged into it. Mine has an option to allow access from the net for my files, its a netgear. U should just be able to point kodi to whatever URL it makes.
Hi there,
I have the AFTV Gen 2 running latest OS.
I have setup an OpenVPN VPN "Router-on-a-stick" on a "spare" Raspberry Pi I had lying around.
This is successfully using my PIA VPN login credentials to provide a alternative external IP..
I have pointed the FireTv gateway config away from my default router gateway, to my new RPi VPN 'router'.
Both the FireOS and Kodi still continue to work, but there does not seem to be a way to check that the Kodi load is using the correct/new (VPN) external IP address.
Note: I have checked this with my PC and the RPi definitely provides a switched IP.
So how can I check what the external IP address of the FireTV/Kodi setup is?
Many thanks in advance.
Do you have ES File Explorer installed? You can use the web function (in the Favourite tab) to access Google and search for 'What's my IP address' there. Alternatively, I use a simple 'Whats My IP' app to launch and confirm IP address. There are many available to download on Aptoide. When this shows that the correct IP address is working, Kodi always seems to use that web pathway/route.

That's great - thanks. Have used google via ES File explorer and its confirmed the IP is as I hoped.
Excuse my ignorance but how do it get Aptoide - its a android app repository , yes?
Good stuff, glad it worked! Yeah, Aptoide is an Android app repository that works on non-rooted Fire TV (unlike Google Play Store). I'm not sure how others view it but I find it pretty good. The odd app download does come with annoying pop-up adds and, in that case, I undelete app (clean up with CCleaner) and then reinstall from another provider in Aptoide. Here is a link to the What's My IP app I use: http://m.sebastianvelmont.store.apt...git.WhatIsMyIp/7/3090847/What's+my+IP+Address
Make sure you close the app and clear its cache each time, otherwise it sticks to the first IP address it found. There might be better ones that refresh automatically?
To install, I have Aptoide loaded on my Fire TV first (via loading Aptoide apk file from ES Explorer) and then search for app in search bar. Saying that it might be better to find the apk from elsewhere but I like checking Aptoide occasionally on Fire TV to see what apps it recommends to update on my system etc.
I use vlc on my firestick 4k a lot to watch videos on my pc over smb and am looking at ways of optimising the LAN connection between all my devices. I just installed an upgraded network card on my pc which has two ethernet ports and have been wondering if I plugged my firestick into one of the ports after setting that port up to share my Internet connection, would that increase the speed the firestick is able to access smb files?
My firestick is usually connected to LAN with an ethernet cat5 to a three 5g router
Any advice is much appreciated, thanks

To improve network connection
Optimizing the video streaming on Windows 10 PC:
1. Go to Windows Settings -> Apps -> Video Playback
2. Enable I prefer video to play at a lower resolution
Block Amazon services from using networks:
1. Download NoRoot Firewall from Downloader app: https://apkpure.com/noroot-firewall/app.greyshirts.firewall
2. Install NoRoot Firewall and open
3. Go to Apps section and you want to deny any Amazon services from networks (i.e DeviceSoftwareOTA OTA apps)
4. Go back to Home section, press Start and create a VPN connection.
5. Enable ADB and unknown sources in Fire TV settings
6. On your PC, search cmd and run the following commands:
Code:
//Connect ADB using network
adb connect <Fire TV IP>
//Verify the attached devices
adb devices
//Run this command
adb shell pm clear com.amazon.device.software.ota
I actually use Kodi smb connect to my media server and use wireless. I don't get any buffering issues with Kodi. I have a portable hard drive connected to my router to store videos on. What kind of issues are you having?
