can some one please explain how to use remote desktop with windows xp sp2
a step to step guide ( dummies version ) would be highly appreciated..

- Remote tab
- Enable remote desktop check box (check it)
- On firewall, port forward 3389 to the IP address of your XP machine
- Go to http://whatismyip.com and note the IP you are given.
- Try to remote in from your phone with that IP

how to use it over wifi..
my computr has a wifi card
exec is wifi enabled
my computer has internet connection.
no internet connection on my exec.
will it be possible to use remote desktop in this case
please explain

Hmm... I can't get it to work. My Universal says:
Cannot connect. Likely reasons are:
1. Specified computer name or does not exist
2. A network error occurred while estabilishing the connection.
What I've done:
- Enabled the Remote Desktop on my computer.
- Forwarded the 3389 port to remote desktop in Windows's built in firewall. (I don't use any other one)
- Checked what is my IP
- Started the Remote Desktop Mobile on my Universal
- Entered the IP to the computer name
- Entered a username without any password, and domain
P.S.:
My Computer is behind a router. Maybe I need some other tweak?
P.P.S.:
What is the best Remote Desktop application if this one does not works? Maybe I should try another...

You need to set up your router to forward it to your PC. "Port forwarding", I think is the word, should be under Server/Application setup on your router.

Well, I've found some things under my router Remote Management setup.
- Enabled HTTP
- Enabled UPNP
- Enabled PPTP
- Enabled IPSec
I'm quite new in router setup, because I've just get my first router about 1 months ago.
Maybe I'll try to pull out the router, and plug the internet directly to my PC. If it works, than the problem is in my router setup.
I've just realised it if I pull out the cable from the router, I cannot connect my PDa via wifi Saaaad
Now I must play with the router settings

Just a quick question. When switching on the wifi on your universal, which access point does it connect to ? Or you need to setup a adhoc between the pc and universal. Your universal must be on the same ip range as the desktop.
Let me know if this has been done yet.

You also need to be able to ping the XP SP2 machine successfully from your XDA. Try vxUtil to make sure that you can do this.
I do this at home through WiFI and it works well, particularly through the 640x480 screen.

Well, I won't encourage you to mess with the router if you don'tknow what you are doing. As of a router, Remote Management setup -> Enabled HTTP sounds to me like that just opened your router to the outside world, and if they are able to brute force their way into your router, your router is at their mercy.
Anyway, since you said that you used your phone and PC at the same router, you ought to able to do it with the LAN IP address, which should start with 192.168. At your PC, Start -> Run -> "Cmd" -> "ipconfig". That should display your network stuff, look for the 'IP address'. Use this address instead of the one you get from whatismyip.com

I didn't played with the router, because of no-time, but I'll try what you've said. But I know ehat I'm doing, I'm just not experienced about advanced networking. But maybe time will teach me. Or you guys

Well, I want to try remote desktop via internet, not via WiFi. I mean I want to connect to my computer from my work, so I didn't selected ad-hoc connection. BTW thanks for the help

Awwwwwwww maaaan just tried it and it works!!!!!! Now I have another question.
Ok I'm logged in, but the XP user on my PC automatically logging out. My friend doing remote desktop from our work, and when he logs in from the work on a Pc, the PC what is at home, don't logs out, it still the same, and he can use the computer to help his girlfriend.
So if he logs in form work, his gilrfried can see what he is doing.
I hope you guys can understand it, I'm writing a bit messy.
So can I do it form my PDA to PC too? And the anwer is yes, can I get a separate program for this? I think my friend uses a program what is called VNC.
And another question: I know the built-in remote desktop in the best program for this process. What are the most useable programs? I mean: best speed, or more beautiful look.

What do you mean by this? I thought this port has to be associated with "Remote Desktop?

[Q] Map network drive - access with DHD

Question: How to access a network drive with DHD in a specific case (i.e. no Nas)?
Setup of network(drive)
A 300n wlan router is setup and all devices (2 laptops, 2 DHD's) connect to it via Wifi.
The router has an USB port, to which I connected a general external HDD (no network disk, just your average cheap external WD disk).
The router lets me share this external disk within the Wifi network.
On my WIN7 machine it is mapped (map network drive, assign drive letter and put in: \\192.168.1.1\shareddrivename\)
Username and password has been setup as well.
Probably important to realize, it is no Nas, its just the router letting me share this disk.
In win7 I can view and use the drive without a problem.
How can I use it with my Desire HD?I have looked, but ESfile expoler and smb plugin for astro do not give what I need, or I am clueless as how to set it up properly.

Easiest way I've found is to either use the dlna stuff from HTC to share media OR setup an FTP server and use an android FTP client most nas devices should also work via FTP protocols

Pretty much same setup with the phone.
With ES File Explorer go into LAN tab and go Menu -> New -> Server and there you can setup ip address and password and should work just like on your W7.

Well....the problem is, it is just a external hdd shared via the routers' usb port.
It is not a nas and it sits on the routers ip address (192.168.1.1).
Dlna is not then intend.
I just want to be able to use the disk as I can do in WIN7.
With ES file explorer, I can not access it.
Any other thoughts?
Basically, I want to know if it is possible to map a network drive?

I've installed XBMC on my Ouya and set it up with a shared DB which it can see without any problems but it cannot reach the files themselves which are on the same server as the DB.
I tired using ES too but that timed out when trying to connect.
Is there something I'm missing, I've tried over wifi and ethernet?

I am having the same problem, I have XBMC installed and it seesm to work fine with youtube, hulu, etc. But I cannot connect to any of my network shares. I have them shared on a Win7 PC, and all PCs in the house can access the share fine, but I cannot even see the network shares on the Ouya. Either by adding network location, or under SMB? I used to have XBMC on an Xbox1 and I was able to set that up fine, using the same method and shares. Not sure what the issue is, I am adding a NAS HD to my Router directly (USB), and setting up shares on it, to see if the XBMC on Ouya CAN see that. If that doesn't work, I may try another version of XBMC, maybe the newest?

I ended up giving up and giving it to my parents to use with a USB hard drive, suits their needs ok but won't be recommending an Ouya to anyone else.

I've had no problem connecting to my network shares... both from XBMC and from CIFSManager...

1. turn off password protected file sharing
2. and set folder or drive permissions to Everyone
that should work, it worked for me

VPN Client on the Fire TV

Hi,
I'm in France and trying to set up a VPN client on the Fire TV.
The only decent I've found on the store is VPNroot which won't connect and display a "socket address family" error.
I'm using Boxpn service which works great on my desktop/mobiles.
Anyone succeeded in setting a VPN client on the ftv ?

Not yet. I have tried HMA and vyprVPN the apps crash when connecting to a server. You could do what I did and install DD-WRT on your router, granted your router is compatible. It works great for me and a have everything behind that router protected by the VPN

Yes i'm working on the router side too, but still thinks it'd be great to have the client running on the FTV itself.

Yeah, it would be cool to take it anywhere with you and just fire up the VPN app and get all the content without having to worry about carrying a router with you. ill keep looking into it. will update if find anything

I'm afraid, Fire TV OS is not particularly receptive to VPN usage however, if your router supports DD-WRT firmware, it's a good news because DD-WRT has the option of selecting different VPN configurations like: PPTP, L2TP or OpenVPN and Once configured, users on the network don’t need to enter a log in process when they need to activate the VPN. It just starts automatically, so any device connects automatically and easily, giving you all the benefits of using a reliable VPN service.

^^ Macuser just mentioned the tun.ko vpn module got it working. Theres a tun.ko installer by droidvpn in the playstore that some of u guys may want to mess with.

i tried to follow Rose Ab's idea
i found an old router with dd-wrt on it, i now have to networks: one local and one connected via vpn which has the AFTV on it.

Care to share how you configured the two networks? I'm thinking about doing the same thing, but can't find a reliable guide to do so.
I have two routers - both configured with dd-wrt. I find that when I plug my second router (w/vpn) into the first's LAN port, I can never get a connection to pass through. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

actually, i have one router for my "usefull" network wich is configured as a gateway (you can use your internet box too). The other is configured as a vpn connected client, connected on the first, making a network for devices that need to be connected to the USA. I use purevpn and they have good tutorials for tomato or ddwrt and other kind of routers.
I also have a NAS with two ethernet ports... each connected on a different network, so it can be available from the fire tv and my computer

Thanks for clarifying. I think I got it working on my end by configuring the 2nd router to use the first router's IP address as the gateway and local DNS server. Still not my preferred option (waiting for the PIA android app to function by itself), but it will work for now. Cheers.

wouldnt it be better to just load up DDWRT on a router and configure your vpn from there?

The best option avalaible is proxydroid.
Droidvpn is too slow.
Knowing this, if you still prefer using a vpn just let me know.

There is a thread on reddit that explains both using the OpenVPN client directly on FireTV or split-routing setup.

I was able to get a split tunnel up and running on an ASUS RT-N66U router running Merlin Firmware. The VPN in Merlin is basically a port of OpenVPN in the tomato firmware implementation. The first step is to create the VPN tunnel and then you can setup the separate routes. For Private Internet Access (PIA). I used the following instructions to setup the tunnel:

Next I followed the instructions on this page for setting up a separate route for my FireTv. With this configuration my AFTV goes through the VPN tunnel and everything else goes through the normal Wan to my ISP. I followed the following instruction. Look at page 2 of the post for the instructions by WIZIN

This is tailored for ASUS routers, but the idea should not be too difficult to implement on and dd-wrt o tomato firmware.
For me this is a much cleaner solution than running something on the AFTV. It starts up and shuts down with the router, so I don' have worry about restarting it when I reboot on the AFTV or it using CPU and memory on the AFTV.

I have a fire tv and would like to have a backup to connect to the office. I have a Asus N900 which has asuswrt fimrware. How do I setup the client to connect I am getting bad config on mine when trying to connect. IPCP -timeout sending config-requests.

aftv2 - qnap smb share on kodi

I just got the AFTV2. I got kodi installed and I want to view multimedia on my qnap nas which is on a smb share. I went to videos->add video source -> browse and selected windows network. I got "error 2: share not available" I then added the smb share manually and I get the same error.
I did a search and from what I gather it should work out of the box. I'm connected over ethernet so its not a network issue. The smb share works fine on my other devices and I haven't changed anything on that end. The only variable right now is the new aftv2.

nevermind it was a typo on the manual entry. It wont automatically find the smb share because of the login/password required.
