SMS & MMS (wifi) Replacement - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note 4

With Hangouts supposedly ending their SMS/MMS capabilities, does anyone have a good alternative that works over wifi? There are times when I'm in an area of no network coverage, but do have access to WiFi.
I understand that Facebook has a good one, but I
don't use FB, so that's not an option. Also, it doesn't matter if the app is paid or not.
In advance, thanks.

Any ideas?

[Q] Texting Over Wi-Fi? Also a Question About Google Hangouts?

Hello everyone!
I was wondering if it is possible to text someone just by using your Wi-Fi. I don't have the best of service, so I often get text messages really late. Is there any app that I can use that will allow me to receive messages over Wi-Fi? I've heard about Google Hangouts before, is it a good replacement to use instead of the stock messaging app? Also, what don't you like about Hangouts? Thanks a lot for your answers!

Verizon Messages works great over wifi. Not a bad messaging app either..........

+1 :good:
The above statement is accurate about Verizon messages, not a bad app either. Hangouts works great for video chatting and phone calls over wifi too but if you are just needing messaging, I would go with Verizon messaging as the other user of hangouts would have to have a gmail account. While I realize most people do, now, have a gmail account I have found many people do not want to message in Hangouts.

MMS over wifi

I recently upgraded from a galaxy s4 to a beautiful galaxy s6 edge but i noticed i lost the mms over wifi capability. Yes i have tried it all turning on wifi calling but no luck it only works if i turn off my wifi and turn on my data. Can anyone help please?
So I was looking into this, and while this post is from April, I figured I would answer since I didn't see a response. I'm sure someone will benefit from it since I've seen the question all over the place (on Google searches)
I found out that T-Mobile doesn't allow 3rd party applications to send MMS over Wi-Fi using Wi-Fi calling. This is because they use Generic Bootstrapping Architecture (GBA). The 3rd party applications don't have these GBA certificates, therefore not allowing them to utilize the MMS features. I've seen some people be able to use Google Hangouts and the stock SMS application to successfully send MMS over Wi-Fi. Other than that, the only fix I've seen in the applications temporarily disable the Wi-Fi to activate the mobile data, and then reactivate Wi-Fi once the MMS has been sent.
I'm sure someone else could clarify more than that, but I hope this helps.

Yeah I use Google messenger, and it works perfectly fine for me over wifi
I use textra and it works great. I've tried my sms which does NOT work, so i think it depends on the app you are using.

MMS problems

Is anyone else having MMS issues? I can never get MMS messages to send. Its rather annoying. I've heard of people adding a custom APN but my button to add an APN is greyed out.
The only thing I can do is toggle airplane mode a few times to get the messages to go through but it doesn't always work
Went to the sprint store today and they were baffled.
I have. New update 5/11 should take care of that. If you clear your cache it will take care of it.
Worked great man. Cleared cache on hangouts and MMS service seemed to do the trick

that's what i did after update picture would not go through and text takes a long time to send
cleared app cache and data
all is right in the world with sms
I have had a similar issue and it was fixed by turning wifi off and the message would send
My APN settings can't be edited. It doesn't let me edit, only create NEW APN's. I have my MSL and still cant change my APN settings. I could use the hotspot on the S6 SM-G925P. I'm currently non-rooted due to the recent 5.1.1 Firmware version update. Thanks.
There has always been an issue with sprint phones + Google Hangouts + MMS. For some reason hangouts will only send and receive MMS over data. If you want to test it connect to wifi, try to send an MMS over hangouts (notice that your data icon in the top bar will show). If you have poor data reception your MMS might not even send and the phone radio can get very hot. Now disable hangouts and use the stock messaging app to send an MMS. Notice that the MMS sends fine over wifi and does not activate your data.
I really love hangouts, but the inability to send and receive MMS over wifi is a deal breaker for me. Turning on data every time I get an MMS is a battery killer for me. I doubt Google/sprint will ever address this issue as it has been going on since hangouts released when I had an S2.

My experience has been the same since S2 also. Read all the MMS threads. Tried all kinds of changes to APNs. Most of the time I was running CM and blamed it for the issues. Finally tried Textra to find no problems with MMS. My conclusion was Hangouts. You can follow this Google thread if you have a couple hours to spend. All breeds of Hangouts users with same problem, with very little response from Google. My hope was for Hangouts to be for Android what imessage is to IOS. No such luck, but still hopeful. Until then, I use Textra with no problems.
I've been attempting to use XHangouts and the APN splicing feature to get Hangouts 4 to send / receive MMS through my carrier number, and no dice. Has anyone gotten this working on the Sprint S6? I'd, in theory, love to be able to use Hangouts for both the new Voice group chatting AND normal MMS functions but it seems like I can either downgrade to Hangouts 3 or deal with using another SMS client for carrier MMS.

MMS problems

Am I the only person experiencing MMS problems? I have always had MMS problems, pictures won't download, MMS won't send. I have been running mostly CM or other custom roms on my S4 for several years. I attributed my problems to the custom roms, maybe APN problems. I have been running stock OE2 for a couple days on my S6, and have already had similar MMS problems. Is this just the way it is on Sprint or do I have a fundamental problem with the app I am using? I have been using Hangouts. Is there something better or is this the best I can expect? All my family members have iPhones and never have any MMS problems. Not going there, but I am pretty feed up with Sprint, android, or Hangups MMS problems.
Hey I was just about to post something about this. I believe the issue is with googles messaging apps (Hangouts or messenger). For some reason both of these apps are determined to use mobile data to send MMs. This often times flat out doesn't work and you end up with MMS messages not coming through. Even when you are connected to wifi it will still try and send the MMS over mobile data.
However if you use the stock samsungs stock messaging app MMS sends MMS over wifi and is much better at sending and receiving over mobile data.
I am not sure why this is happening. Probably something with APNs. If anyone has any suggestions on how to make googles messaging apps work well with MMS let us know !

@balistic2 thanks. I really like Hangouts, but don't like the MMS issue. I am going to switch to stock Samsung for awhile to see if it is any better.
Ya hangouts is great b/c is puts all your gchats and text into one conversation. However when I get an MMS it is awful.

Not if it is a hangouts issue. No problems so far on stock messenger, but too early to tell.
Ya something in Hangouts/Google Messenger doesn't use the correct APNs. To try it yourself get on wifi. Send an MMS with the samsung stock messaging app. Watch to see if your mobile data becomes active. (it shouldn't b/c you are on wifi). Now do the same thing with hangouts/Google Messenger while on wifi. Does your mobile data turn on when trying to send a MMS via a google app?

I highly recommend Textra. Can't recommend it enough actually. It's smooth, pretty, and works with MMS over WiFi. Set it up like this: https://www.dropbox.com/s/9pwu3qth7x6rvxk/Screenshot_2015-07-11-10-50-45.png?dl=0

Thanks. Will give it a try.
Hi
I had the same issues as every one with not being able to send or receive mms.Believe me when i say i tried everything out there to no avail
My solution/problem was a very easy fix (after weeks of trial and error)Go to settings then data usage then turn mobile data on
you should see a graph with your usage. All you do is adjust your data usage to say 9 gig or something high and that is it
What i can gather why this works is because if your data is set at say 2 gig it restricts what can be downloaded ie mms
Good luck i hope this helps
Also try calling: ##update#
This will update your PRL and such, it could help

Google messenger not sending mms with wifi on

H812 on Rogers,
I can't send mms using Google messenger whilst I'm connected to wifi. I can receive no problem however. In order to send I must turn wifi off. Bit of a pain...
Edit: works perfect using stock messaging app.
Anyone else notice this?
Note: I know I can't use wifi to send or receive. That's not an issue.
Some mms apps are not smart enough to switch to cell data to authenticate. See if there is a setting to send via cell
