How to check size partition/layout? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Phone T-989D
TWRP 2.8.7
Currently running cm-13.0-20151219-UNOFFICIAL-hercules
So in the process of getting the above CM13 to work, I was doing the virtual partition. Following the instructions, I wasn't able to partition as directed in the instructions -
In TWRP, go to Wipe -> Advanced Wipe -> check Internal Storage -> press on "Repair or Change File System" -> press on "Change File System" -> press on "EXT4", and then swipe to start formatting the internal SD card. This can take up to a minute.
Click to collapse
Pressing on Repair or Change File System gave an invalid location. Apparently this is a known issue? *shrugs*
So I did this -
Used the following PIT file...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal.../mod-partition-internal-memory-t-989-t3051556
Odin returned /w success.
Installed CM13 image from above.
Works.
In the instructions for pit, it showed how to check sizes via the Storage and USB option screen, in his version of android... but CM13, doesn't have it the same menu, it shows Internal Storage only and listed at 5gb.
My question is then, is my virtual partions proper? I don't know how to check each virutal partition... using TWRP I can only confirm the partition ares ext4.
In TWRP it has /data /internal storage /system and the other common ones. How do i check if everything is OK? I don't know what is required to confirm a virtual storage is set properly.
Also, in TWRP can some explain what Format Data does? its not like Windows format is it? I mean you partition a drive, then you have to format it, to use it. Its only like wipe correct? I don't really need to do if it I'm wiping /data /dalvick /cache anyways?
Thank you.

You don't need the PIT file anymore. You need to undo and flash the original PIT back to the device. I believed it is called "unmodified". After you finish undo your device you can follow instruction in the Unofficial CM13 thread to flash the special TWRP recovery update. This one rename partitions so the new rom can be installed. Once you reinstall the rom, the Internal storage will show around 11 GB and not 5 GB
In TWRP, go to Wipe -> Advanced Wipe Then
Select "Data" and click "Repair or Change File System", you should see size around 11,xxx MB
Select "System" and click "Repair or Change File System", you should see about 2,xxx MB
Select "Cache" and click "Repair or Change File System", you should see about 5xx MB

At the very of the first post, long one, you will see
T989_PIT_(Unmodified).zip <-- this is to undo the partition back to its original.

[GUIDE] Flashing Your First HD2 Clockwork Mod Android Rom [For Newbs]

This guide will explain how to install Clockwork Mod on your phone so you can flash CWM Roms, as well as performing other actions.
Clockwork Mod is the traditional way of flashing, updating, backing up and restoring Roms on Android Phones. Many chefs are now only providing Roms in this form so it is best to have it on your phone and know how to use it.
REQUIREMENTS BEFORE STARTING!! IMPORTANT, PLEASE READ THIS!!
1. YOU NEED HARDSPL 2.08 INSTALLED ON YOUR DEVICE TO FLASH MAGLDR
2. YOU NEED A RADIO WHICH SUPPORTS 576 RAM (2.08.50 or later should be fine but the Radio NEEDS to be 2.**.50.**). I recommend the 2.15.50.14 Radio
3. YOU NEED MAGLDR V1.13 ON YOUR DEVICE TO INSTALL CLOCKWORK MOD
THIS GUIDE ASSUMES YOU HAVE ALREADY FLASHED MAGLDR V1.13 ON YOUR PHONE. IF YOU HAVENT THEN PLEASE FOLLOW AND COMPLETE STEP 1 OF *THIS* GUIDE BEFORE CONTINUING WITH CWM.
-------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------
1. FLASH CLOCKWORK MOD TO YOUR DEVICE
NOTE: There are 3 CWM images attached at the bottom of this thread. You only need to install 1 of the images depending on what type of Android Rom you want to flash. The larger the size of the CWM Partition the less space there will be left for programs installed to your phone.
150MB Partition - For lite Roms without Sense such as CM7. Gives most internal space on your phone for apps
250MB Partition - Standard size Roms or squashed Sense Roms
400MB Partition - Full Sense Roms. Hardly any internal space for apps. 512ROM Leo's will need A2SD external partition set up
If you arent sure which size you need then check the first few posts of the Rom you want to flash as it will usually tell you which size partition it needs.
1. Download the CWM Partition you require and extract it to a new folder on your pc
2. Connect your phone to your pc via the USB Cable
3. Restart your phone and HOLD DOWN the 'End Button' (far right) until the Magldr Menu appears
4. Keep pressing the 'Volume Down' button to goto Option 5. USB Flasher and press the 'Call Button' (far left) to select it
*The screen should now say Wait USB...USB*
5. Run DAF.exe (Right Click and Run As Administrator if you have Vista or Windows 7) in the folder you extracted the image to and follow the intructions on your pc to start flashing
6. After flashing the phone will reboot. HOLD DOWN the 'End Button' (far right) until the Magldr Menu appears
To start Clockwork Mod keep pressing the 'Volume Down' button to goto Option 8. AD Recovery and press the 'Call Button' (far left) to select it
NOTE: If the Rom demands a different size CWM then you can download any of the attached sizes, then extract the contents and edit the flash.cfg file with Notepad. Change the sizes on the following lines depending on what you need:
system ya ***M (partition size)
cache ya **M (cache size)
-------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------
2. PARTITION YOUR STORAGE CARD FOR A2SD ROMS (IF REQUIRED)
NOTE1: Setting up a partition on your Storage Card will allow A2SD compatable Roms to automatically install apps to this partition rather than using your phones internal memory. This is useful for people that have alot of apps to install and for people who want to flash a Sense Rom and wont have much internal memory left.
NOTE2: Once you create an A2SD partition on your Storage Card all information will be lost so make sure to backup everything to your pc so it can be copied back after. The accessible space on your Storage Card will be made smaller by the amount of the partition you set up so only make it as big as you need make it huge if you dont have many apps to install)
1. Boot into the Clockwork Mod menu
2. Go down to 'Advanced' and select (by pressing 'Call Button')
3. Select 'Partition SD Card'
4. Select Size of required partition not sure then 1024M is a good size)
5. Make ABSOLUTELY sure you want to continue and then select 0M Swap Size
Your Storage Card will now be partitioned with the size you selected.
ALL DATA ON YOUR STORAGE CARD WILL BE LOST!!
-------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------
3. FLASHING A CWM (CLOCKWORK MOD) ROM
1. Connect your phone to your pc via the USB Cable
2. In the Clockwork Mod main menu select 'wipe data/factory reset' and then 'Yes' on the next screen
3. When the data wipe is complete, select 'install zip from sd card' in the main menu
4. Go down to 'choose zip from sdcard' and select
5. Scroll down to your CWM Rom (which you should have copied to the Root of your Storage Card) and select it
6. Select 'Yes' from the options and wait until you get a message saying 'Install from sdcard complete'
Note: You can repeat steps 3-5 if you have more zips to install such as gps data or screen mods
7. Once finished press the 'Back' button to get to the previous menu screen
8. Select 'reboot system now' to restart your phone and your Android Rom should boot
9. Once Android has booted and you have gone through the setup screens, LONG PRESS the 'End' button and select reboot to reboot your phone to avoid possible FC (Force Close) problems
NOTE: The first boot of your Rom will take alot longer than subsequent boots so leave it and give it time (15 minutes max)
-------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------
4. UPDATING AN EXISTING CWM (CLOCKWORK MOD) ROM
1. Connect your phone to your pc via the USB Cable
2. In the Clockwork Mod main menu select 'install zip from sd card'
3. Go down to 'choose zip from sdcard' and select
4. Scroll down to your CWM Rom update (which you should have copied to the Root of your Storage Card) and select it
5. Select 'Yes' from the options and wait until you get a message saying 'Install from sdcard complete'
6. Once finished press the 'Back' button to get to the previous menu screen
7. Select 'wipe cache partition' and then 'Yes' on the next screen
8. Select 'Advanced', Select 'Wipe Dalvik Cache' and then 'Yes' on the next screen
9. Select 'Fix Permissions' and wait for it to complete
10. Once completed press the 'Back' button and then select 'reboot system now'
11. After the phone boots into Android you will probably get alot of 'Force Close' messages. Pull the battery, plug it back in and press the 'Power' button to boot up and everything should work fine
-------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------
USEFUL INFORMATION
HOW TO ENTER THE CLOCKWORK MOD MENU SCREEN
1. Restart your phone and HOLD DOWN the 'End' button (far right) until the Magldr Menu appears
2. keep pressing the 'Volume Down' button to goto Option 8. AD Recovery and press the 'Call' button (far left) to select it
-------------------------------------------------------
HOW TO COPY FILES TO YOUR PHONE
NOTE: This can be used to copy music or data across to your Storage Card and for copying your CWM Rom (with .zip extension) to the Root of your Card for flashing
1. Connect your phone to your pc via the USB Cable
2. In the Clockwork Mod main menu select 'mounts and storage'
3. Go down to 'mount USB storage' and select
Note: The Storage Card will now appear as a drive on your pc
4. When finished copying files select 'Unmount'
-------------------------------------------------------
HOW TO BACKUP THE CURRENT ROM ON YOUR PHONE
NOTE1: This can be used to make a complete backup of your Rom, installed apps and all settings. You can then try a different Rom and restore your backup at a later date if required.
NOTE2: Multiple backups can be made as they are stored in seperate folders (named by date and time)
1. Connect your phone to your pc via the USB Cable
2. In the Clockwork Mod main menu select 'backup and restore'
3. Select 'backup'
Note: Your entire Rom and all associated data will now be saved to your Storage Card. You can rename this folder at a later date if you wish
-------------------------------------------------------
HOW TO RESTORE A BACKUP TO YOUR PHONE
1. Connect your phone to your pc via the USB Cable
2. In the Clockwork Mod main menu select 'wipe data/factory reset' and then 'Yes' on the next screen
3. When the data wipe is complete, select 'backup and restore' in the main menu
4. Select 'restore'
5. Select the backup folder you wish to restore and then 'Yes' on the next screen
Your entire Rom and all associated data will now be restored from your Storage Card
NOTE: You can also restore parts of the backup by selecting 'Advanced Restore', selecting the backup and then choosing which part of the backup you want to restore (boot, system, data, cache or sd-ext)
-------------------------------------------------------
To SCROLL through the Menu Options use the 'Volume Up' and 'Volume Down' buttons on the left side of the phone
-------------------------------------------------------
To SELECT an Option in Clockwork Mod, press the 'Call' button which is the far left button at the bottom
-------------------------------------------------------
To GO BACK in the Clockwork Mod Menu, press the 'Back' button which is next to the 'End' button at the bottom

i see that u had a hard time putting this together..!!really appreciate u'r work. thanks a lot..!!
Thanks a lot. That's a superb user guide.
I have a question: I have a TMOUS HD2 so I have a 1024MB ROM. Assuming I'm not going to install far too many apps, is there any reason I should consider using a smaller CWM than the 400MB version? Is there any downside/compatibility issue? e.g. what would happen if I install a ROM where the cook says it has been made for a smaller CWM?

Setting a 400MB partition for a Rom that only requires a 150MB partition would have no negative impact on your device or speed. The only negative is that if you flashed a Rom that only needs a smaller partition then you would waste around 250MB of ROM but since you have a 1024LEO and you said you arent going to install much then you would 400MB-500MB of internal space available to install apps so you dont have too much to worry about.
The only reason why you should never install a 400MB partition is if you never plan on trying a Sense Rom. They are the only Roms that require soo much space so it would be pointless to waste the space for no reason.
Hope that answers your question.
Mark.
Wow this guide is godly, thank you so much for this, this guide answered all of my questions..
I have a TMOUS HD2, am currently on 150mb CWM on MIUI and CM7 alternately, if I change the CWM to 400mb version, is that mean that I can flash any ROM including the MIUI, CM7, Sense etc without having to change the CWM?
many TIA

Yes it does (in general) but you are always better off flashing the size recomended by the chef to get the best results.
Mark.
Is there a way to use SD builds with CMW?
What would be the right instructions?
Thank you..

Thanks for making this guide MSkip you make the best guides man.
I am seriosly amazed though by how many people have trouble using CWM to flash ROMs and to backup and restore their ROM. I mean CWM makes it so simply, I even made a guide that includes the break down of MAGLDR and CWM to try to help people out here. I am truly starting to see why members here get so aggrevaited by people though.
Thanks again for the guide and keep up the good work.
what if the chef wants me to install a 170MB CWR system partition???
download the 150mb partition and edit the flash.cfg file with notepad and change system ya 150M to system ya 170M
Here's a question:
Let's say I installed 150MB partition and tried any ROM, but now I want to install a ROM that needs 170 partition. Is it enough just to flash the new partition (from step 4 on...) or I need to start from scratch and install MAGLDR again and then the new partition?
Is it possible to use root this unlock Tmo HTC HD2 ?
thanks alot

You dont need to reinstall Magldr you can just flash a new Partition (via Magldr) and then install your new Rom.

Hi Mark
about that i have a question. I see that some roms need partition sizes different from the ones available in the CWM thread.
Is it easy to edit that partitions to make them match the rom needs???
EDIT: got it. Forget this question.

Sd-ext/Sdext2 partition Backup and Restore from CWM Recovery

Hey guys, I have got a technique to Backup, format and restore your whole sdext2 / Sd-ext partition through Recovery in case you were unable to find a recovery to backup and restore this partition; and as far as I know there is no single recovery out there till date that can directly Backup and restore this partition on Grand. So if you need this please ask here and I will help you out.
Need help.

Can your method be used to backup sdext2 on other mobiles? I have got Micromax Canvas Power A 96 and Lenovo A 7000. Please provide me the necessary steps and information, so that I will give it a try and see if it is successful.
Thank you
Yes you can. This method is only for the android smartphones where the recovery does not support sd-ext/sdext2 backup, format and restore. If your device has an official or unofficial recovery on xda forum that supports sdext2/sd-ext then it can be done directly from the recovery menu options and this method is not required. If not follow the below steps
1. Find a recovery on the web/xda for your specific device that supports any file manager directly through recovery which has an option for terminal/bash command inputs and execution. Even if the recovery does not have a file manager support but has the terminal/bash command facility then that will do. Philz touch/non touch recovery for your specific device should support this. It has aroma file manager with terminal/bash commands support. I hope you know how to install a recovery img/partition on your device
2. Depending upon which app you are using for sdext2/sd-ext partition to handle, you will find a file under init.d directory for mounting this partition. This file contains script commands for mounting this partition. You need to edit this file and find the script command. For example if you are using link2sd on galaxy grand then the script command is mount -t ext4(your partition type) -o rw(permissions set) /dev/block/vold/179.10(this is the allocated partition address for your sdext2/sd-ext partition specific to your device and will be different for different devices) /data/sdext2.
3. If you want to do a full backup then reboot into recovery go to file manager and command prompt and type the mount script for sdext2/sd-ext and press enter.
4. Exit file manager/terminal and from recovery select full backup( boot, recovery, system, data ). This will backup your full device. You can backup .android_secure, data/media and extsdcard depending on your choice but mind it the backup file size will be large and you should have enough space on your extsdcard for it. If .android_secure is empty/not used you need not backup this ( if you don't have apps on extsdcard this will be empty) .
While performing the backup your recovery will display sd-ext partition not found. Could not backup sd-ext. Don't panic when you see this and just ignore it. Your sdext2/sd-ext partition will be backed up.
5. To format and then restore, boot into recovery and go to file manager/terminal and execute the above mount script and go back to recovery. Then format all above mentioned partitions that you have backed up and reboot from recovery back into recovery. You will be prompted for keep/apply root 1. Yes 2. No. Select yes.
6. Once you have rebooted back into recovery, again go to file manager/terminal and execute the above mount script and go back to recovery.
7. Now select full restore and select your backed up file and your device will be restored to exact state at the time you created your backup.
Note: You can also do customized/selected partitions backup and this also applies for format and restore too through philz cwm touch recovery.
I hope I have made this as simple as possible to understand and implement the procedure. If you have any doubts/queries you can get back.
Happy to know that it is possible.

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!! I'm on an LG G3 and I was successful at mounting my sdext2 partition for Link2SD using this method. I had to change a few things, for example, I have no init.d folder, but had to search for "link2sd" and found the file "init-link2sd.sh", which contained two commands, and the one that worked was "mount -t ext2 -o rw /dev/block/mmcblk1p2 /data/sdext2". THANKS AGAIN!!!!!!!!
Glad to know that it worked for you. Hope others are able to use this guide too.

7)Reboot recovery.
8)Install your ROM(don't flash gapps now).
9)Back again to Twrp start screen select "Wipe"-->Advanced wipe-->select/mark "System"-->press "Repair or change file system(notice that size hasn't increased to 1.2GB/2GB)-->Resize file system.
10)Back(though size of partition appears unchanged, its actually increased to 1.2GB)-->Back>select/mark"System"-->Repair or change file system-->Notice size of partition increased.
10)Back to Twrp start screen and flash gapps, that's it.
Reset to default partition:
1)I am also giving link for flashabe script file "Reset to default partition.zip" for restoring default partition sizes.
2)Boot in to Twrp--->Advanced--->File manager--->Browse to the location of file "parted"--->Select "parted"--->Copy File--->/sbin.
3)Now using Twrp File manager browse /sbin--->parted--->select parted--->chmod 755.
4)You can also use "aroma file manager" instead of Twrp file manage for copying "parted" to "/sbin" and changing it's permissions to 755.
5)In Twrp flash "Reset to default partition.zip" and wait for the script to finish execution(recovery will reboot automatically once this process finishes).
6)In Twrp--->Wipe--->Advanced wipe--->Mark in "Dalvik/ART Cache"__"Cache"__"System"__"Data"__"Internal Storage"--->Swipe to wipe.
7)Reboot recovery.
8)that's it you are back to default partition.
PS:
1.Need for "Resizing System partition"(step 9) comes only with CM14.1(haven't tried other CM versions or other custom roms) no need to do that if you are flasing MIUI ROMs(i,e you can skip step 9 if you are flashing MIUI ROMs)
2.If you still need more System space or want to further modify partition table(only if you know what you are doing),you can edit "update-binary" file inside the zip as per your needs.

good work mate
Great tutorial! Have a some questions:
1. After successfully doing this, If I decided to full clean wipe system, data, cache, dalvik cache, internal storage, and format data, the size will be reset? Do I need to do all the steps again?
2. If I decided to go back in default partition size I just flash that to reset all the steps? Or there will be a steps to reset all I've done?
Thank you.

1.You can do all the wiping as usual, size of partition wil stay as it is and won't get reset, but if you're flashing current version of cm14.1 again you need to resize "System" partition before flashing gapps.
2.You additionally need to change "System" partition too to F2FS and than to EXT4(like you do with "Data" partition),in case you're going back to default partition.
I forgot to mention point 2 in OP,I will now add this there

Based upon the scenario, the only concern is the system partition coz newer or update partition is too large. Cache partition is ok because it only use as a temp file partition. The userdata partition is large as internal storage because it shared as the same partition. That is the good thing at xiaomi phones, data partition is large as long as you have space in internal storage.

Guys please help me:
Today morning I reparationed my Redmi 1s as the Op said. it went successful. after using for 5hours I've found an update from CM. So I updated using CM UPDATER APP. after reboot I've lost my Google play store and Google app (after updating to todays CM update using CM UPDATER APP). When I went to see the system partition size, it's size went back to the default 782mb (around 782mb, I don't remember exact size).
I checked whether it is disabled or what in apps. But I can't find there also. I tried Show system apps and reset app preferences, but nothing showed them.
I tried to get them back (play store and Google app) by resizing the partition to 1.2 gb (wipe>advanced wipe> Mark system>change or resize partition>back> checked system partition size whether 1.2gb or not>wipe cache and dalvik cache> reboot to system). But nothing worked.
So please help me in getting them back. Please exclude solution such as factory reset or flash gaggs again.
Is anybody else also facing the same issue or it's just me?:crying::crying::crying:

please give detailed instructions to get back to default partition as i am not anymore able to flash any rom on my device. Sometimes it strucks at patching system image unconditionally and sometimes shows error 7 in twrp. And not even being able flash using adb sideload. Please give detailed instructions to revert back to default partition

1)Detailed instructions for returning back to default partitions are given in op under the sub header "PPS", nothing more to add to it,just follow as it is.
2)I myself havent faced any issues till now iam currently on cm14.1 6-12-2016 version
3)Saw your posts on cm41.1 thread too,so you're on latest twrp
but still facing error 7,If possible post a screenshot of error 7(coz it never happed for me)
4)coming to the issue at hand, could you able to mount cache, system and data partitions. In twrp go to wipe>>advanced wipe>>select "cache">>Repair/change filesystem and see if everything(regarding partition size)is ok there.
Then do same for system and data too and check how are those partitions,if possible post screenshots.
Post your relpy as soon as possible.

[TRICK] Increase your SYSTEM partition to 2.5GB after flashing ROM

Use this for increasing your system partition
https://forum.xda-developers.com/yu...-increase-partition-to-2-5gb-boot-to-t3395240
After successfully increasing your system partition many of them experienced that the system partition is reverted back to old system partition after flashing ROMs
Here are some methods that I have tried to remain 2.5gb system partition after flashing ROMs
Carefully read this methods
Method 1 :
Reboot twrp
Select install
Flash ROM
Go back
Select wipe
Select system
Select Repair or Change File System
Select Repair File System
Swipe
Go back
Select Resize File System
Swipe
Go back
Done ?
Reboot system
If Method 1 doesn't work try Method 2 some ROM doesn't support Method 1
Method 2 :
Reboot twrp
Select install
Flash ROM
Go back
Select Backup
Select System
Swipe to backup system
Go back
Select Wipe
Select system
Swipe to erase system
Go back
Select Restore
Select your system backup
Swipe to Restore system
Go back
Done ?
Reboot system
How to check your system partition size?
Reboot twrp
Select Wipe
Select System
Select Repair or Change File System
Now you can see system size = 2479MB
Done ?
Hit thanks button ? it may encourage me

TWRP Weird folder names and no .zip file

Hey,
I'm new in this kind of stuff but need help as fast as possible. So I tried to root the phone but let me tell you something else. When I enter TWRT (boot into) and try to install the .zip file it shows weird folder names that I can't see on the computer. I have Win10 if this matters and Android 8.0 or 8.0.1. The folders are:
acct
boot
cache
config
cust
data
license
mnt
and it goes like that. The problem is that about 85 or 90% of these folders aren't visible on my computer when I plug in my phone... The System is mounted in TWRP and everything is mounted. I tried wiping all the data. I have unlocked bootloader. Also when I go to some of these folders I see REALLY strange folder names like: 671hnsuh1b%nqjus Or something like. I've found out that it's encrypted but I just want to root the phone and find the .zip file. Also can someone explain me these acct, boot, license, vendor, version and other folders that aren't visible on my PC? Please help. I'm so confused, not clue what's going on...
You need to use the format data option to decrypt the internal storage. Better use SD card or USB OTG to flash the root file. Anyway don't wipe the oeminfo or vendor partition in any case and take a backup of all partition beforehand.

Well, I already used this option. The format data option and it's still the same. Maybe the version of my twrp helps: 3.1.1-1

Strange. What is the android version?Did you had any lock screen set before formatting? Can you please share a screenshot or log during formatting, if you have any. Anyway you can use adb sideload to flash the .zip file.Cheers

My android version is 8.0 so it's oreo. I've also noticed that the 3.1.1-1 version of twrp is the only one from what I tried that I can install the newer versions gave me an error. I had lock screen and it was code not a fingerprint but I wasn't prompt for a code after booting into twrp. Adb sideload seems to fail all the time so I can't do it :/.
The logs from wiping data are:
Updating partition details...
..done
Full SELinux support is present.
MTP Enabled
Starting ADB Sideload feature...
Starting ADB Sideload feature... (And it failed now wipe logs.):
Fomatting Data using mkfs.f2fs...
Done.
You may need to reboot recovery to be able to use /data again.
Updating partition details...
...done
So yea I'm so sad tbh with this... I'll try to install new twrp after the wipe if the wipe didn't help and will tell you if I get an error when I try to boot into NEW twrp.
EDIT: Ye still an error.
Maybe you have a link to the newest working twrp?
Nevermind got it. Downloaded the modded twrp by TEAM MT I guess from here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/honor-8-pro/development/wip-twrp-3-1-1-0-duk-t3625798 Works perfectly and SOLVED!
